I been enjoying every minute on this. Gathering parts cleaned from the front pin to the rear hitch. She is not perfect but. This had three colors on it with a clear coat gone bad on the top sides of the engine. Now it is two because of the P/O painted the outside parts a darker color may be burgundy? Things like this consume me = time. But I have a lot of that. This is my third 1257 I have always like these very much. IT IS THE START UP. I hope you enjoy the picks.

It’s been a while since Stormy the 1056 ran! A charger on the battery and some fresh gas and he fired right up! Little Max’ and I tossed a 36” RD on and touched up some deer trails. She was a great help!

This is the crown jewel from our latest buyout : It's dusty, it's dirty, but it's brand new ! Just enjoy the pictures as it sits in its as found condition. I will post follow ups in the future when it gets properly cleaned and detailed !

My goal was to make a Super C-161-8. I've always loved the look and simplicity of the 78-79 C-Series, but liked some of the features on the newer models. My intent was to make it look like factory. Except from adding two additional holes in the frame for the gear reduction housing (normally has 2), everything was just a bolt on. I intended to do a full-scale restoration on it once I broke the engine in, but I kind of like it the way it is. I have 2 other Super C-161-8 Speeds that I have plans to restore.....so I may just keep this one the way it is. I also have a factory electric lift, but I just don't think I want to put it on this tractor. I've owned some really nice Wheel Horses over the years, but this is easily my favorite. Not sure what other photos you would like, but here is a few I took before it started raining. Here is where the parts are from: 78-79 C-81 (Perfectly straight Sheet Metal) 16hp Kohler with solid oil pan (like better than the shaker plate) that I had richmondred01 rebuild this spring. 416-8 Frame & 8 Speed 96-97 314 (Brake & Clutch pedals, steering wheel 520-H (gear reduction steering, front axle, tires/rims/, bell crank, which avoids hitting the gear reduction steering, gas tank w/ gauge)

Okay so the painted up one is my valentines gift a few years back! The other one, we are 2nd owner! The woman is the grown up lady that little girl being pulled by her dad! We have the original purchase slip….

Finalized the smothing of the deck belt cover, found and fixed some rot on the bottom of the deck, and finally got a coat of primer on the deck and related parts. Hoping by mid week I’ll be able to top coat, and with even more good fortune be able to start reassembly next weekend.

This is a great loss of a great guy and a real Wheel Horse fan. I met Jay several years ago and I immediately had respect for him just from the way he looked at you and then spoke . This year at the show I was able to visit with him and we had a very good conversation. I will also miss the posts and the way he approached them on the Red Square Wheel Horse Forum. My condolences to his family and his Red Square buddies.

The RJ-35 frame in 1955 and 1957 was made out of a single piece of channel iron, in the 1956 the frame was pressed steel. It was found after sand blasting the channel iron frame on my 1957 RJ-35 the manufactures name is impregnated in the channel. Wild Bill in Richmond VA

@Matt Polk unless you've got really trustworthy info on that setup and trust your own level of self-education on hydraulics, I agree heartily with @wallfish--get an expert. They'll have the right test equipment and will tell you very quickly if anything is incorrectly plumbed. A good one will gladly answer your questions and may give you a useful lesson in maintaining your new toy!

The stator on your engine is basically a long continuous wire wound around a series of iron cores. You will need a good ohm meter to test the stator windings. The total resistance between your two AC leads should read 0.1 to 0.2 ohms for the long continuous wire. If there is no reading then one of the wires leading to the stator could be broken, don't buy a new stator yet. Now test the two wires from the stator to ground, there should be no continuity to ground on either one. If either (or both) wirers read continuity to ground then remove the flywheel shroud and inspect the two wires for abrasion or rodent damage. Hope this helps

I'm not a fan of folding ramps, but that seems to be the most common on the market these days. I have an aluminum set that don't fold, and they are rated for 750lbs. They are very light, and work well. The pic below isn't on a truck bed of course, but they are useful in alot of places. I drove 200 miles one way to get them several years ago. Now that I know how well they work, I'd drive 1000 miles for a set of these! And I agree wholeheartedly with previous comments: whatever ramp you use, do NOT drive your tractor onto the bed. Walk beside it. Very few of us can bench press 500lbs. A tractor can flip off the ramps faster than you can get off the tractor.

Ya' know RJ-58's are hard to find way out west as most of the early Wheel Horse products were sold in Minnesota, Wisconsen, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and up into the New England states BUT yes, many Wheel Horses did find their way all over the United States and Canada. I had heard tales of a Wheel Horse dealer in the almond orchard area of Lodi, California that had a RJ-58. During a trip to San Francisco to Las Angelis I drove to Lodi to see for myself and low and behold the was an old Wheel Horse dealership in that town and they did have a RJ-58 in the show room along with a model 701 and big D-series out back. I talked to the owner for quite a while, and he let me dig through his parts department. Yes, my luggage on the trip home was a lot heavier. Found many HY-2 kit parts and N.O.S. steering parts for my RJ-58. A real nice person as him and his wife even took me out to lunch at In-n-Out burger. For those of you who might not want to do an e tank, don't have a good enough charger, or a good place to have a tank cooking, you can de-rust and strip paint with an office trash can and white vinegar. Plus your garage will smell like an Eye-Talin restaurant! I have this wheel I want to strip and paint. Not too bad a shape but bad enough I want to clean it up. This picture is how it looked after it soaked for 4 days. 4 gallons of white vinegar in my electrolysis /office circular file can. Put the wheel in Tuesday and pulled it out today. 5 minutes with the pressure washer

Not removing but just holding duck's bills shut. Keeps the noise down.

Always back the garden tractor up your ramps. If you are going forward and traction is lost and the tires are spinning as the tractor slips down the ramp it will do a backflip once traction is regained. If I am loading into a pick-up bed I try to find a hill I can back up to to reduce the angle of the ramps.

Do those notches at the sides close when you squeeze the handles. If they do, then I agree with formariz that they were used for fencing. The notches would cut the wire.

@dclarke worked with a lot of structural steel / stainless , just the inherent no twisting on that , makes for a very rugged unit , like it , make them bombproof , pete

Had a set of coveralls in HS and removed the trans on my 61 Falcon and got gear oil on them. Scent stayed on them until I wore them out enough (many years) to be able to use them anymore. Gotta love coveralls. As soon as you get them on you have to pee! Friend of mine was doing some welding one night with coveralls on. When he got done he smelled something burning. He went crazy looking for it as he wanted to go in for the night and didn't want to burn his shop down. finally as he was running around, I saw a puff of smoke from the cuff on his foot!

Mike I think the gen engine (orange in pictures) has the big pan The AS style pan WH used on shaker mounts has the same depth (in a small area) and uses some rod as the big base pans...) There are some shallow pans that need shorter dipper...

Only this worse is overheated burnt gear oil. We blew up a couple sets of rear end gears back in my short track stock car daze - guess who got to pull them apart and clean out the axle tubes...??

Didn't do much other than plug in the battery maintainer...but loved having all the critters snoozing together in the shade

Since your pump has been replaced It was probably done so to correct the problem you're having. Another one most likely won't fix it Sounds like an issue with the control valve to me. Something is stuck letting enough fluid to slowly raise it and not releasing ( changing direction) to lower it.

HEY, did we go to the same school? LOL If you have a tractor supply store near you, buy'm both. Use the one that fits the best and take the other one back later (when ya break something else and need a part.)

We have been repairing the deck for the past couple of weeks and just finished yesterday. There are a pair of Carolina wrens that built a nest at the corner of the deck in a large flower pot that is on a stand. We carefully moved the pot as needed and gave the birds frequent breaks so they could feed the babies, this variety pairs for life and shares the parenting duties. This morning the wife gives me bad news saying that the babies were at the other end of the deck and were dead. She swept them off the deck but I had to investigate and found two tiny hatchlings, not our wrens. I suppose that some black bird or other bad actor kicked them out of a nest high in a tree. I looked in the flower pot and found the babies safe but the hole was kind of smashed shut. Either something was bothering them or the parents deliberately close the door when they are away.

The two shooters showed last night. No daytime pics yet. Soon time to hang some stands.
