16 pointsJust gonna throw some pictures on here to tease everybody a little bit : we made a road trip today (13 hours total ) to purchase a large tractor / parts collection. Several containers full of NOS and used parts .Won't have time to get into any detailed photos or descriptions for a day or two but there's one tractor here in the bunch that will stand out from all the rest....stay tuned We also go back tomorrow for one more full trailer load!

9 pointsThe height of your particular truck is what's going to make the difference for the best ramps. A small S-10 tailgate height is much lower than a lifted Ford 4x4 1 ton. The higher the tailgate - the longer you want the ramps. Arch ramps will help with clearance for the transition from the ramps to the truck bed. Something like this? https://www.titanramps.com/vehicle-ramps/atv-ramps/10-ft-pair-folding-arch-ramps/311420.html?adpos=&scid=scplp311420&sc_intid=311420&adlclid=51c0835a25121b00dd5fe058185db9fe&msclkid=51c0835a25121b00dd5fe058185db9fe&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=SC Shopping - NB - Desktop - Prospecting&utm_term=4580977767649705&utm_content=SC Shopping - NB - Desktop A small 4x8 trailer which is probably about the same size as a full size truck bed can be stored vertically easier than a big trailer. Like using some block and tackle on a tree or wall if the gate/ramp can fold inside of the trailer bed.

9 pointsWheel horse 1276 1966 K301-ST model #401 / #800 the 1276 was only made for one year , the year after was the model 1277 —proud to proudly say all work is my own I never hired anyone to do any work on it not a dime or bolt I found a way to do it myself

8 pointsThis is the crown jewel from our latest buyout : It's dusty, it's dirty, but it's brand new ! Just enjoy the pictures as it sits in its as found condition. I will post follow ups in the future when it gets properly cleaned and detailed !
-
8 pointsYou need the arch ramps if you need to transport a tractor with a deck. Walk don't ride the tractor on and off. Strap the ramps to the truck so they don't slide off the tailgate. I had some steel ramps that were great but they weighed a ton. Sold them and got aluminum.

6 pointsWe did good this weekend! Me and Jacob got full pulls, we ended up 4th for Jacob and 6th for me out of 18. Still not bad! All the cub guys are starting to ask alot of questions about wheel horses! We only got beat by the big money pullers! received_843141793337911.mp4 received_843141793337911.mp4 received_442039641290385.mp4 received_442039641290385.mp4 received_2605436416257872.mp4

6 pointsThe one drawback with wood ramps are if they get wet you have no traction.
-
6 pointsOr, as I do, remove the tailgate and reinstall it when done. DEFINETLY strap the ramps either way.

6 pointsSo sorry to hear this; met him when we attended our first Wheel Horse show in 2019, my dad and I got to speak with him quite a bit at the last couple shows ,seemed like an all around nice guy and very knowledgeable.
-
5 pointsLet see some photos of wheel horse pulling tractors all cleaned up and shiny .

5 pointsSeems from all I've read and heard about Jay he'd be prone to wanting the lot of us to remember him in a happy way. My paternal grandfather was like that. I'd be the same. A favorite poem of my grampa... Miss me but let me go. Great words of wisdom.
-
5 pointsThis is a great loss of a great guy and a real Wheel Horse fan. I met Jay several years ago and I immediately had respect for him just from the way he looked at you and then spoke . This year at the show I was able to visit with him and we had a very good conversation. I will also miss the posts and the way he approached them on the Red Square Wheel Horse Forum. My condolences to his family and his Red Square buddies.

5 pointsSo I got itchin to see if it actually moves so I slapped what’s done together. I ratchet strapped a block of wood to the trans and put the steel seat pan on it. It goes pretty good. Not super fast, maybe 12-14mph.

5 pointsThis is the wood pile left by the excavator. Plenty of firewood 🪵 for next year. We've been working on cutting in to the pile to get it sorted out. Here's our new driveway the excavator guy did without me even asking. THAT'S customer service. Some views of the new area. This wall. Is AWESOME. ALL the rocks came out of the excavated area. Video as viewed from the base of the rock wall.

5 pointsI highly recommend removing the tailgate. I have a couple of Ramparts ramp top kits that I bolted onto 2"x12" pressure treated planks, they've worked well for me for many years, heavy but very handy. When I had a pickup, I would find a gentle slope on my property, sit the ramps on top of the open tailgate, pinned into holes drilled into the tailgate, but not strapped. And then I would drive my tractor onto the ramp and into the bed of the truck. Yeah, I know. You haven't lived until you've done something like this and had one of your tailgate cables snap halfway up the ramp and drop you and one side of your tractor down even just a few inches, hoping you don't slide off the ramps, or the other cable breaks, or something you haven't thought of, all in just a couple of seconds. It could have been much worse. A couple of things about those tailgate cables... They're probably not rated to handle the weight of one of these tractors. And even if they are, if they're covered with a protective rubber sheath or tubing of some sort like mine were, there's a good chance you're not going to notice that one or both of your cables is rusted out until it's too late. Just take off the tailgate, and pin or strap the ramps down.

5 pointsThanks to @953 nut, I added some yard art to the flower bed that will eventually have some kind of plants in it . After the concrete sets up I will remove the bricks under the wheels and add some more dirt to the bed. Saved some wheels that were rusted around the valve stem holes. Found a good use for yellow paint

5 pointsRest In Peace 'Apples. I had so much fun with him over the last five years and I only saw him at the BS. Wished i could find the pic where I photo shopped horse doo doo in the bucket of his FEL. I always enjoyed his pics of the wild life that was in his yard. Prayers for you and your family. 🙏 He had a horn on this tractor that winnied. Kids and us alike got such a kick out of it. Here's another one with his partner in crime right behind.

4 pointsRylee and I had a nice trip to town today, about an 8 mile round trip. The parade was fun and the tractors got lots of thumbs ups!

4 pointsI found this on him too. https://www.cremationofpa.com/obituary/Jay-Myers#tributewall Evidently his family is still working on an obit. I plan on planting a tree in my yard for him and of course it will be fertilized in a manner I'm sure he would approve of.

4 pointsStarted wire wheeling, sanding, priming and painting with regal red rusto on some of the snowblower parts from the blower I picked up yesterday.
-
4 pointsYour very lucky to find one with the original front tires, the 10 hp Kohler is unique to this model also because of the large engine block and shallow oil pan needed to fit the short Wheel Horse fame. This Wheel Horse model was manufactured only a short time in 1965 although there is a discrepancy in the months it was produced. Good Find ! Wild Bill in Richmond VA

4 pointsI think it’s a huge mistake…here’s my reasons. You don’t seem like your ready for a complex machine such as a 520. It has much more wiring and electronic parts than say a C-120 8 speed. I say that because you already have a 520 and some electronic part quit and you’ve just given up and are simply searching out another 520 rather than deal with the one you have. There’s two things you should do. 1/ Figure out what ya need to do to get YOUR 520 running first. 2/ Pick a simpler machine to be your next one (if you absolutely have to have a second machine) such as what I mentioned above. Get a nice simple C series like from the 73-77 years. A dozen guys here have said “fix what ya got first” and have offered advise, but it seems like none of it has sunk in. Tell me your a kid without out telling me your a kid . Of course, just my opinion and I fully expect you to dismiss all that I said.

3 pointsYa' know RJ-58's are hard to find way out west as most of the early Wheel Horse products were sold in Minnesota, Wisconsen, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and up into the New England states BUT yes, many Wheel Horses did find their way all over the United States and Canada. I had heard tales of a Wheel Horse dealer in the almond orchard area of Lodi, California that had a RJ-58. During a trip to San Francisco to Las Angelis I drove to Lodi to see for myself and low and behold the was an old Wheel Horse dealership in that town and they did have a RJ-58 in the show room along with a model 701 and big D-series out back. I talked to the owner for quite a while, and he let me dig through his parts department. Yes, my luggage on the trip home was a lot heavier. Found many HY-2 kit parts and N.O.S. steering parts for my RJ-58. A real nice person as him and his wife even took me out to lunch at In-n-Out burger. I will post pictures of my RJ-58 when it finished being restored. Wild Bill in Richmond VA

3 pointsAlways back the garden tractor up your ramps. If you are going forward and traction is lost and the tires are spinning as the tractor slips down the ramp it will do a backflip once traction is regained. If I am loading into a pick-up bed I try to find a hill I can back up to to reduce the angle of the ramps.

3 pointsTodays tractors that wouldn't fit yesterday: they all are in running conditioned, but need serviced, batteries, etc....
-
3 pointsThese are the recommended hydro filters for all Wheel Horse tractors. Wix 51410 = Napa 1410. ATF will not damage your transmission. If it had ATF in it, I would use it again.
-
3 pointsMost generator engines have a tapered PTO shaft. This is done because most alternators only have a bearing on the end not connected to the engine. You can purchase a taper to keyed adaptor on Ebay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/132083677591 They are also available in 1 1/8" keyed shaft.
-
3 pointsWell, if my years in IT taught me anything relevant to this it's that if you leave that lower guard off that belt will never jump again. The principal being "The sooner you put it together, the sooner you have to take it back apart" and the corresponding real world application being that if you never bother to finish putting it together it somehow stays fixed.

3 pointsMy goal was to make a Super C-161-8. I've always loved the look and simplicity of the 78-79 C-Series, but liked some of the features on the newer models. My intent was to make it look like factory. Except from adding two additional holes in the frame for the gear reduction housing (normally has 2), everything was just a bolt on. I intended to do a full-scale restoration on it once I broke the engine in, but I kind of like it the way it is. I have 2 other Super C-161-8 Speeds that I have plans to restore.....so I may just keep this one the way it is. I also have a factory electric lift, but I just don't think I want to put it on this tractor. I've owned some really nice Wheel Horses over the years, but this is easily my favorite. Not sure what other photos you would like, but here is a few I took before it started raining. Here is where the parts are from: 78-79 C-81 (Perfectly straight Sheet Metal) 16hp Kohler with solid oil pan (like better than the shaker plate) that I had richmondred01 rebuild this spring. 416-8 Frame & 8 Speed 96-97 314 (Brake & Clutch pedals, steering wheel 520-H (gear reduction steering, front axle, tires/rims/, bell crank, which avoids hitting the gear reduction steering, gas tank w/ gauge)

3 pointsI've been using these: https://www.reesetowpower.com/product/7452700_loading-ramp-arched For several years. Well Under $200 shipped to my door. Lightweight. Good traction. Comes with a movable fastening strap. Highly recommend.

3 pointsVolume will effect the speed and a lot depends on cylinder size. When that piston moves in a cylinder you need to fill the space vacated by said piston. 5 GPM is pretty much correct. My loader is home built. I have a .5 cu.in. pump on my Power King loader. I do not have the exact specs but a same sized and branded pump on e bay is rated at 2610 psi and 4.43 GPM @ 2000 RPM. The stock pump for my tractor was a 6.15 GPM 1250 PSI @ 3300 RPM. My pulleys are a 3" on the 14HP Kohler engine and 4" on the pump. the loader frame is 3/16" box tubing so it's quite heavy. I can pick up the empty bucket at idle. And this boulder was no problem.

3 pointsAdding all my “uncommon” parts/attachments to it. Seat back, seat pad, square seat, front and rear weights, and a grader blade. Would like to find some hl5 head lights down the road.

3 pointsAs to checking the ignition module the service manual provides guidance page 47. problem is the test is one of eliminating other things then assuming the module needs replacement.

3 points@TonyToro Jr. and I worked on his new pulling tractor. Got the engine installed and some figuring out what needs to be where today. Tomorrow we will get it mostly finished up. He worked hard today. I guess he can take a little break…😂👍

3 pointsThat's just the kind of guy he was @Horse Newbie. We had to invite him to camp for victuals, Dan's pulled pork and smoked Mac n cheese... I told him to keep eatin i would tell him when he was full. ' Course he had to drag Madge along but it was all good. Camp dinner I'll never forget. He loved to give us the business about he only lived 15 from the show! I just noticed @Darrenw85 the pic on his trading card is the one with the apples in the bucket. That card I have and will go up on the honor wall in the shop.

3 pointsI got a real kick out of the ‘92 Geo Metro! It’s taken him about 10 years to make things fit!
-
2 pointsWhat size is the pulley on the K-181? Using my stock pulley on my K-181 equipped 502, I run a stock belt.
-
2 pointsSomeone went to town on the trans. Probably made it bigger to add real bearings as the originals were just bronze bushings and most likely worn. If it works like it is then why fix it if it ain't broke. The front spindles are home made to accept those trailer hubs. It started out as a 1960 400 or 550
