Hello, I'm Joe. I picked up my first Wheelhorse today! Woot! I own a small engine repair shop and have been looking for a resto project for sometime. Not going to lie, a Wheelhorse was not my first pick. I was looking for a Copar Panzer or Pennsylvania Panzer, but kept coming up empty. I enjoy anything old and rusty. Found this 605 with original H60. It has been modified a little. Someone prior added a different throttle lever as well as added an electric start. Excited to be here and learn!!

This weekend we went to the Will County Threshermen's 60th Annual Antique Tractor & Steam Engine Show. While it rained most of the morning, the sun did come out in the afternoon and we were able to look at some cool antique tractors and equipment. There was even one WH representing. It did dry out enough in the afternoon that they were able to shell some corn. IMG_1619.mp4

I have traveled around the Sun for 3/4th of a century but just now learned something. I was watching some birds on my deck and noticed that they had their mouths hanging open, so I looked it up. Birds have no sweat glands so they pant like dogs to cool their innards.

This is the first of the new LED lights for the mighty Conrad Weiser Marching Band 310-8. In another post I outlined the conversion of AC to DC, and now I have regulated 12VDC and 5VDC to run my LED lighting. $2.99 halogen marker light from Rural King is now a high-powered LED fixture that is drawing only tiny amps and making big lights.

Thanks for the welcome!! Appreciate it everyone! Got to digging a little. Points are fried. Carb is actually in pretty good condition. It's in the bath now.

The use of what gear to use depends on the work being applied to the tractor. When tillers and snow blowers really came into use by Wheel Horses, they had to have a Speed Reduction kit installed on the unit to make them work correctly. The kit used a twin idler pulley set up, a 7-inch transmission drive pulley which needed a longer drive belt and a special belt guard for the larger drive pulley. My 654 has the Speed Reduction kit and is really slow but it would pull the front tires up in the air every time going down a tractor pull track! Wild Bill in Richmond VA

There was a squirrel laying on the bird bath rim, half in, half out. when he got one side cooled, he turned and sat the other way. The birds were not amused. I have an old oil burner nozzle in the end of an old piece of garden hose that puts out a fine mist. Zip tied to a fence. Birds love it ! Particularly the hummingbirds. They sit on the fence and the mist bathes them...

Hello Kate, I have been receiving your magazine since sometime around the start of it. I always filed them away after I was done reading them. After all these years I had a stack, a very tall stack! I often wondered what I was going to do with all of them? That answer came two years ago at the Wheel Horse show. I was lucky enough to meet a young boy who was carrying some tires around. He had a huge smile on his face and told me that these were the tires he was looking for! His knowledge of Wheel Horses and tractors in general was nothing less than impressive. I asked him and his mother if they get your magazine, and they said no they don’t. After talking with this kid for a while about things adult men talk about, you know like Power Stroke diesels! I quickly realized what I wanted to do with my stack of magazines! His mother was kind enough to give me their address after I told her I had something I wanted to give to her son. So I sent him my stack of magazines and a large metal Power Stroke Diesel sign that I had.( I later found out that he put it up in his room!) Kate, I wanted to let you know that your magazines have brought happiness three times. Once when I received them, a second time when I sent them out and a third time when they were received by this young man!! For this I say “Thank you!” I have your number and once I get my rear in gear I’ll be in touch with my Wheel Horse story. P.S Here’s a good cover shot of my herd of horses! 😂😂😀

A very important thing in the shop that is not thought of often enough are sharp pencils . They are essential in about every single task and their sharpness is critical if accuracy is to be achieved. There are many ways of achieving that but none more efficient and consistently accurate than a proper pencil sharpener. Nothing fancy is needed. The simple vintage ones are always the best readily available and inexpensive. My favorite of all of them is the Dixon Enduro No. 20. Because of its swiveling container it can be mounted in any position, container also being easily removed for emptying. However it’s best feature is it’s ability to automatically except any diameter pencil and automatically stopping cutting when pencil is done.

Spent this week with the Family in Delaware. Warm and dry, but a nice ocean breeze. Crabbing was excellent and the beer was cold.

Hello again. I found a very cool one today. At least it is cool to me because I have never put my eyes on a wheel horse tractor like this one before but, I am new to the roster. This is a C160 and is hydrostatic drive with a hydraulic valve body on the side for lifting and lowering deck which is currently not on the tractor for the photo shoot obviously. Are these tractors common amongst those who know what normal is? Thank you

My retired engineer neighbor wanted to build a "Taj Mahal" fence along out property line which meant removing 8 mull berry bushes that I was happy to see go. but cents they were mine it was my problem. But I lucked out. His son was on vacation in Florida so his business vehicle was being stored at his dads. A tow truck. We used the wheel lift and a chain an in 2 hours had them all ripped out of the ground.

Well the lilac bush/tree and hedge had to come out. The lilac wasn't to much of a problem, but the hedge was something else. Got them cut back after extracting the old fence running through them and the existing post. That was 2ft into the ground and took some pulling out. The hedge had one trunk about 8" diameter. Cut all the branches off and cut the trunk down to about a foot. That had roots going everywhere and quite thick. Started to dig/chop that out and SWMBO, taking pity on me, called number 3 grandson to come over. With his help and the Sears, we got it out. Didn't half put up a fight though. After cutting through all the roots we could see/find with a felling axe, we attached a rope between stump and the Sears. On the first attempt all that happened was it's ag tyres dug two nice ruts in the verge and the front end went about 3ft off the ground. That was exciting. No photo I'm afraid. Carol was in charge of the camera and panicked a bit. Some photo's below.

Another fun fact about the Renault 4-cylinder engine is that even though we call it an industrial engine (for generators, forklifts and marine) it was used by Renault in the 1970's Alpine sports car and could be built to produce 125 HP. Wild Bill in Richmond VA

Garage sharpener. I use mainly Sharpies and pens. I still have Wheel Horse pencils from Glen I got at the show years ago. I even have an old school masking tape dispenser!

Use my low range in high grass- backing up hills and blowing snow - once you find the gear/speed that keeps the auger full I watch the shoot thinking how nice it is compared to shoveling

I don’t know. 50 years and not full yet? Seems to me you are not sharpening your pencil often enough. What seems to be the problem?

I moved in to my house in 88. There is a pencil sharpener in the kitchen and one in the garage. I have emptied the kitchen one but the garage one has a clear bin and there was shavings in it. I knew the guy who had lived there died in the 70's. I said I wouldn't dump it out until it's too full to accept any more shavings. It's still going. Pics to follow. Kitchen unit.

Hi - My name is Kate Goelzhauser and I am the Managing Editor of a little magazine called Lawn & Garden Tractor Magazine. It's a small, home-based business in southern Indiana. It's been in publication since 2006. It features all brands of lawn and garden tractors and equipment. We had excellent representation of Wheel Horse machinery until Covid hit. Since it shut down shows, our writers didn't have a good source to get photos and stories. I've tried to lasso in a few writers, but there has not been much response. This site is overflowing with stories, so my goal is to track some down, reach out to owners with some good quality photos, and start running Wheel Horse articles again. If you have a story about your tractor, your collection, a technical tip, a how-to article....anything.... please reach out to me here or at Kate@LagtMag.com. If you have something on this site, tag me or send me the link to your story. In anything that is published, you and Red Square will both be recognized and we will send you three free issues with that article as well. Thanks so much!

Looks like that Tecumseh H60 may be from a snow blower. Starter is 110 Volt, not 12 volt. Block should be the same, but you might want to change the starter motor; or stay with the 110 volt plug-in if you get tired of the pull start. I did that with a WH Lawn Ranger. WELCOME TO RED SQUARE.

It is feasible, but It might be better to convert the Charger to a front mule drive.

You need the belt guard on to slacken the belt so it will slip. Lets see a pic of it.

Wife came out to look at it, she likes it. She said if this goes good then she wants a purple mega horse for herself....I have the perfect engine for that but I'll keep you guys in suspense. Lol.

As Mike, I have a Boston Hand crank pencil sharpener that was Dad's, perhaps older than that. Still works well, once I cleaned the two tapered cutters. Seems that ONE of us 3 kids got the bright idea that it would work well to sharpen crayons about 60 years ago - NOT!!!

The factory cut a way Unidrive transmissions were training tools for Wheel Horse school. The early 6 speed Unidrive cut a way transmission were point of sale displays used by Wheel Horse dealerships. Here's a picture of an early cut a way, you tell this by the extended oil fill pipe that allowed the extra oil needed for 6 speed. The cut a way case was found in a dealership in Indiana ...... minus all the gears that were sold out of it.. I put some old gears and differential in the unit to make it a working display. Notice it should have the 10-pinion differential not the 8-piniopn I installed. Wild Bill in Richmond VA

Your Wheel Horse model D-250 has a Renault industrial gas engine rated at 19.5 HP but the true horse power rating is 28 HP. Replacement parts are still available but the brass gear in the transmission is generally only found in Germany, where the transmission was manufactured. Wild Bill in Richmond VA

Off to collect this today, need a larger entrance area for winter - currently come directly into the kitchen, which is too small as it is. Won't get it built for a while, but it's free and I couldn't bare to leave it Road trip to Ayr and back.

Just to explain that picture because it is cropped out and…. I hope this does not offend anyone but 😁…… you can see a chain hooked to the back of the tractor and a sign in the background because…. Somehow I had a green tractor (not to mention any brand names) in my garage that I decided to sell since my garage is filling up with Red Tractors and the John ….. I mean the green tractor wouldn’t start and had to pull it back to the shop. 😂

I'm also in Southern Indiana, and now have 3 machines. All of my tractors were... what most people would consider junk. My L-157 started out as a rust-bucket... but now sports a 51 horsepower fully custom built Duromax engine. I have an 800 Special which was completely restored... and powered with a 25 horsepower fully custom built Tillotson 9,000 RPM beast... I have a complete build sheet here: And lastly, my 416-8 which I literally just "finished" today... engine completely rebuilt, all new wiring, completely rebuilt tractor. I got this tractor for free from @davem1111... and the build thread is here: You can reach out to me at any time. Don
