20 pointsSooooooo... For the third time now, Trina and I were chosen to be honored with a tractor. This one has a great sentimental value to the PO. It's another C160... I'll get pics later today. It's rough around the edges but has great potential. I've been searching for an engine as some of you know. A Horse popped up. I contacted the guy. Sent him a bit of info on who I am and what we've done with our Herd. We talked a bit. He had a snowblower. And a mowing deck. Plastic wheel weights. And a tractor... A tractor that's special to him. His Dad had the tractor ... Then he had it. Been 20, 25+ years between the two. He's had a LOT of mixed feelings about letting it go and had decided NOT to sell... Then we talked. He decided after talking with me n Trina we'd be the right people to own it... And keep it... Fix it up and - very importantly - USE it.... We agreed to keep in touch and I'd send him progress pics. Wheelhorse folk... Are amazing.

14 pointsReally Eric?? You can wander around in the woods and share with us a dozen snapshots of moss growing on the north side of a tree and then you make a post like this and not a single picture. …. CONGRATS on the new ride !!

8 pointsI filed the points and pulled one out of @953 nut’s playbook (swapped out the weak battery for a known good one) and we have fire!

8 points@ebinmaine glad for you and Trina , often think about who would get my stuff , and the care / interest that goes along with it . just had a friend of mine let me know , he is giving me his his horse , knowing my interest and level of care . did not tell my wife , she has been quietly after me to downsize a lot of my interests . life goes on , pete

8 pointsA little strange belt routing, but it worked I drove it on the trailer.

7 pointsI'm guessing with this snow that was about a foot deep it threw it a good 30' It's a 42" SS tall shoot. And it's mounted on the '73 16 Auto.

6 pointsI'm going to be in the minority on this one. Engine started banging. Not good . There is no local machine shop you can trust. No mention on what you use the tractor for. Is it your primary mower that needs to be fixed right away? Do you have a decent shop, tools and the ability to do your own work? After checking the obvious stuff like the carb screws, spark plug still in the head, noise roughness turning over by hand ect, I would find another 12-14 HP Kohler from another horse. They are pretty plentiful and a couple of hours to change out. Get your machine back up and running. Then at your leisure you can look deeper into what happened. A bang is usually more than a cheapo ring and gasket kit. You need to find a machine shop. You may be shipping a block and crank a ways away. It will take time. You may find out you need a crank that aren't all that plentiful anymore. Get the tractor running if you really need it then go from there. Same thing with transmissions..Get it back moving. Worse thing is you end up with a rebuilt spare that odds are you will need in a year or so.

6 pointsMy buddy called me and told me I had just bought a Wheel Horse tractor and some Allis Chalmers accessories for $150.00-come get them!! Dragged it on the trailer, got it home, cleaned the gas tank and carb and installed the battery from my jet ski and drove it off the trailer. Bought for a parts tractor, but was too nice to part our so I use it to move trailers around. How do you like the front hub cover??

6 pointsI also agree. My point is that pulling the head (also true for the oil pan) is an easy peek without dismantling the engine entirely. You may find something with minimal intrusion, or you may not. It's just an easy way to see inside that requires only a gasket if you don't find anything. My example was obviously one of many possibilities- I rebuilt a carb many years ago, and almost used stainless screws on the plates. I'm so glad I didn't, because I'm sure that a SS screw would have destroyed both the head and piston. The brass one just flattened out and didn't damage anything other than a perfectly good pair of shorts. It was my first rebuild, so of course my "listening" was over-sensitized for a while beforehand. I'm happy to say that engine still runs like a champ now 20+ years later.
-
6 pointsThe cost involved in an engine rebuild will probably be the same as buying a "GOOD" used replacement engine that may develop problems in a year or two. I think of a rebuild as an investment rather than an expense.

5 pointsRecently added some fresh waste cooking oil onto the driveway and this fellow will be disappointed as the oil has already soaked in. Some of you may recall the cooking oil once cured is like asphalt, good for erosion control on our very steep drive.

5 pointsYou have to drill out the spot welds and split the pulley. Weelhorsepartsandmore has them pretty cheap https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/product-category/pulley-idlers/
-
5 pointsto the Mona. The lift lever should be full forward while mowing. The deck mowing height should be adjusted by the two wheels on the rear of the deck. The deck should only be locked in the up position for transport without the PTO engaged.

5 pointsWith all the safety junk added over the years, I often wonder why the ignition wire was never run through a seat switch? All hour meters would be accurate, and millions of batteries would have been saved on top of burnt ignition parts. ...Now that I read what I typed- it makes sense why they didn't do it...
-
5 pointsAs a non-expert just trying to keep my Wheel Horses running forever, I think this is where I would start. It's very simple to pull the air filter off and take a look at the carb for missing screws. You'll be looking directly at the choke shaft/plate, and you might also be able to poke something small at the throttle plate to see if it's obviously loose. I might also try to very gently rotate the engine by hand, clockwise facing the flywheel screen, listening and feeling for anything unusual, and stopping immediately if it doesn't sound or feel right. And then probably pull the head -- it's an easy place to look for anything obviously wrong with the piston, valves, combustion chamber... Agreed.

5 pointsGood story and glad it worked out that way. I find I'm fond of wheel horses with the pride and thought that went into them. Knowing their pricing new I don't think anyone bought one in the day that didn't plan to respect the machine and take care of it. Keeping that going is a respectable endeavor and why the saves are important and this forum is a great contributor to that. When the time does come to move on or stable it for the last time I think it would be best to let a rig go when you have some say in who it goes to if it means something to you. Like in this case. Otherwise you wait too long and something happens and your rig is sold at a yard sale or to a person who will only see it as a mower to use until it breaks down then scrap it and find another. Anyways... We do need pics! I'll assume you're giving it the spa treatment of a thorough cleaning and oil rub down...

5 pointsThis is on the C-160 I picked up last week. Fleabay Universal Voltage Regulator/Rectifier Relocation Kit { Part # WTF-101 } With wiring harness. Free Shipping. Not "odd" but these Wally World lights were on the C-81 I picked up a while ago, one of my pet peeves, brought home quite a few with "lighting kits". I'd have a very well lit trash can if I wired it. Lol.

5 pointsI just rebuilt a 301. Total for bore job was 80 bucks crank and valves were good. Total job cost 300 I put all new bearings etc in. Lots of good videos or there on rebuilds. Glad I did it runs great.
-
5 pointsYour 310 will spin up a 42” deck just fine. Make sure you get the “mule drive” when you pick the deck. It’s the piece on my tractor mounted up front below the hood. Gets the mower deck drive belt from the PTO on your engine to the center drive pulley in the deck.

5 pointsI once bought an 857 and found a Howard on it.... other than that, maybe some speaker wire.
-
5 pointsThank you! It seemed so strange they were on the inside, never saw that before. Learn new things everyday I guess. I ran the tiller already and was really impressed. I found a decent looking deck off a 414-8 that's 42", that should work right? Hopefully I'm not missing any brackets. Picking up the deck tommorow. I canceled a brand new john deere s240 mower and decided to buy this instead. Don't regret it a bit.

4 pointsI have to agree that purchases like this are touching. The sentimental value just can't be quantified. Great story! That being said, I feel the need to point out that this EXCEEDS THE FAIR AMOUNT OF C-160 TRACTORS for one household!!!! Congratulations, I bleepin guess!

4 points@rig854 as you know its all about the density of the snow , your set up and cut looks just about right for , fun plowing , you just love the result you are having , like you could do that all day ! my area typically is right on the edge , for blowing / plowing , so just have to try it out for best result . when its good ,I often back cut the road out front , with zero traffic flow on it , thats good stuff , also wear a reflective vest , for road plowing , pete

3 pointsWell Tony I'm gonna tell ya' jus' how that pin got bent ....... Ya' see there was this guy who had a Briggs and Stratton powered Wheel Horse and the engine jus' wouldn't start but but but he knew a guy who had a Tecumseh powered Wheel Horse (ya' know folks the kind of engine that only takes 1 pull to start!) and they get an idea. Let's hook the hitch of the Tecumseh powered Wheel Horse to the recoil start of the Briggs and Stratton and give it a quick pull. Now ya' see folks that hitch pin in the picture DID COME OFF A TECUMSEH POWERED WHEEL HORSE ..... Oh and what happened to the Briggs and Stratton powered Wheel Horse ya' ask? Well it seems that the recycle guy up in Connecticut had to come by the house twice that week ..... once for the Briggs and Stratton powered Wheel Horse and the second time for the crankshaft out of the Briggs and Stratton! 3 pointsSounds like the rod inside the lift lever is rusted and sticking. When you pull the lever back the button should snap up to hold the lift lever in place. Maybe remove the rubber cap from the button and grab the shaft with a Vise Grip and see if it will pull up. If it will then work it up & down a few time to get it to move properly. Some lube will help the situation as well.

3 pointsYou know, sometimes you start a thread and you really just have no idea where it's going to go. Some really cool pics here. Thanks for sharing. Like that binky!!

3 pointsYou might need to get a little more aggressive cleaning. Try running some 400 to 600 grit paper through the points, then dollar bill them.
-
3 pointsIf the coil was not hot to the touch when you noticed the issue, then chances are that the points were open and zero damage occurred. if the coil was hot to the touch then it may be fried as well as the points.

3 pointsOldie but goodie: The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter. They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge. Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away. It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat. Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.
