21 pointsI happened to see this jewel sitting out by the road...Surprise, surprise! I stopped and had a look see and chatted with the owner for a bit and doing my very best not to let him know I had only been looking for an original condition 78-79 C-161 hydro with the hydraulic lift and sleeve hitch for 10 years or more. I thanked the the gentleman for his time and said I would think it ovr, took his phone number and continued to head home. I jumped onto east 101, a 4-lane limited access highway in Manchester NH and quickly accelerated to 75+ to keep from getting mowed over by traffic and I noticed these strange lights gaining on me fast in the rear view (My other half doesn't believe me). When I looked again this little yard tractor was about 5 feet from my rear bumper with a bright blue flame shooting out of the red-hot muffler glowing in the front grill, I sped up to 85+ and it hung with me for the entire one-hour drive home. When I parked in my driveway, the beast pulled up to my side door and began revving its power plant and crackling loudly. It acted hungry, so being the humanitarian type, I fed it some high-octane food and she settled down beside the storage (hoarding) building and went to sleep. I decided to take it nder my wing and get 'er back on solid footing with some counseling, a warm bed and made a doctors appointment for the following day to have it checked over. No one believes this mysterious encounter, but it happened, and I have the a picture or two for evidence! The doctor gave it a good checkup and gave me a couple of scripts and let him know the following week on her condition. Doc said it was in great shape internally but needed a good bat and maybe some skin cream. The Machine, named "tag-a-long" runs as new and the only issue is a rear axle seal weeping and tired engine mounts. Not sure if I feel like giving it some skin cream yet, would you? Or should I leave it in its current clothes? It has been stored inside a garage since new and everything is well greased and lubed. It also came with a decent 42" RD mower that is fairly solid. So, without further convincing, here are the picture s that I entered into evidence. wh2-Edit-Edit.tif

8 pointsLike your story. I bought a C-145 years ago from a friend. When he bought it he loaded it up on his trailer and drove the 60 miles home. When he got out of the truck the tractor was running! ( He forgot to turn it off! )

6 pointsMy 856 " Forsaken " project is nearing completion. Mounted new 6-12 tires on the back set of wheels and put tubes in all 4. Painted the wheels. The original wheels desinergrated from sitting outside in the dirt for many years. Engine is running need to finish wiring the head lights and changing the fluid in the tranny.

6 pointsI can see that up on blocks in the yard in front of the house trailer in about 5 years!

6 pointsAs someone who loves modifying dang near everything- I really don't want to say this. ...However, If you modify any small air cooled engine to operate over 3600 RPM- it's best to start with a bare performance block and build up with high performance components. Otherwise you own a bomb that requires a hammer to start it. There is no if. It will fail catastrophically, and you might hurt yourself or someone else when it happens.

4 pointsThanks for reminding me. I haven't figured out your tractor storage bill yet. I'm cutting your shipping charge by a third as there will be other tractors on the trailer! Hehe

4 pointsAround here the evening news will have a forecast that bears no resemblance to the morning forecast. The "European Model" doesn't concur with the "international Model" neither of which are what we actually see. My personal forecast is Fun will be had by all!

4 pointsChances are likely for rain, from what I’ve learned. And a whole bunch of fun, no matter what! Don’t worry Sylvia, there’s room in the truck for your purchases and a couple extra shirts… As for curds… I gotta keep my bearings greased and my cheeks squeaky!

4 pointsAwesome Stuff Bill! We have about 2 miles of property line now, that’s the furthest we’ve gone around here yet.. with them driving. Otherwise, one of our Horses originated in NC as far as I know. It has gone to the Big Show, and as far north and west as Portage, WI or nearby @WHX?? plow day too. Got a handful in MD last fall too. Lots of road miles they’ve traveled! My little buddy niece has traveled the furthest at one time with me I bet. She’s been known to cruise for up to two hours of driving at a time… even if her eyes are closed!

3 pointsIt's very important that when a guy is working on a horse that he drink from his RedSquare cup courtesy of @19richie66. It's just water for now since it's about a million degrees outside today, but you can put in the adult beverage of your choice! Wish me luck on the steering wheel! Gotta try and get it off so I can replace the destroyed dash.

3 pointsYa know, for a large part, they're substantially the same machines with different engines. (within the same time frame at least...) For example, I could pull the 17 hp engine from my c175 and install a 14 hp kohler and it would be a c145. Many many parts are interchangeable. Many of the answers you get are going to be personal opinion

3 pointsPainted up a matching trailer for my better half so she can use it around the yard and tow kids around with FlowahPowah. Snapped this photo right before the sky's started pouring buckets and trees breaking from wind around my house, lost power for a few hours so sat around in the shop and watched the storm.

3 pointsIf your bench allows it an idea that was first mentioned here by @Rob J. of mounting vise at a 45 degree corner is probably one of the best ideas for overall work. Great flexibility that way for long stuff that will not block up front of bench when clamped on vise. As he mentions it also gives you ability to rotate the work while in the vise . It allows you to work from many different angles as opposed to a standard corner forward mount. I have one mounted in a similar way also at a height convenient for the work I do on it. For me rotating the work on this vise horizontally is not as important as rotating it vertically or at any angle between the two.

3 pointsI have a couple 1" hubs that were bad, if someone wants them to make a hub puller or have them brooched. I'll bring them along.

3 pointsIs this the Honda swap tractor Dave? It could be the centerline of the crank isn’t perfectly in the right spot, requiring some tweaks to the belt specs?
-
3 pointsI found the bolt head backed out so I tightened it until I felt some resistance. Seems to work just fine now! Thanks for all the help! Now to grease it all up and mow.

3 pointsLets not throw more parts at it until we know what the issue is. 1 - Is your seat switch working properly? 2 - Is your PTO switch working properly? Either one of these switches will kill power to the ignition if they are not working properly. 3 -Was there a rectifier on the tractor before you changed the coil? I'm going to guess that you have power at the red wire on the key switch because you can crank the engine over. Disconnect the wire from the "+" side off the coil and isolate it, so that you don't chance burning up the coil. ( For these tests you will have to probe all of the connectors from the back to check for power. If you unplug them you will not have power ) Following the diagram. 1 - With the key switch "ON", do you have power from the yellow wire on the switch to the PTO switch? (leave the key switch on & continue to the next steps) 2 - With the PTO switch in the "OFF" position, do you have power at the orange wire? 3 - With the PTO switch in the "ON" position do you have power at the brown wire? 4 - Do you now have power at the brown wire on the seat switch? 5 - Push the seat switch down. Do you now have power at the yellow wire on the seat switch? 6 - The orange wire from the PTO & the yellow wire from the seat switch go to the 9 pin connector for the engine. Are you getting power in and out of the 9 pin connector where these wires go? 7 - Do you now have power at the yellow for the "+" side of the coil? Run through all of the above checks to find out why you are not getting power to the coil.

2 pointsThat is good to hear, I briefly had a Yanmar L100. It was definitly louder then any of my kohler's. I mostly don't wear earmuffs, but when that engine ran, I immediately put them muffs on. Had the stock muffler and everything.

2 pointssunscreen Thanks Mike, knew I was forgetting something. Forecast looks good so far, we always have weather for the Big Show. Just don't know what kind of weather till it happens.

2 pointsThank you, @Handy Don! This is some great advice that I will use when I dive back into this. I did take the girl out for her maiden voyage mowing yesterday. I was apprehensive and had some honestly low expectations (more for the deck than the tractor). The plan was to just do 1/2 the back field (just over a quarter acre) and evaluate. She did fantastic, such that she ended up mowing a full 1.25 acres before being put to bed for the night. Better yet, the wife finally got to drive her for the first time and she was all grins - she actually mowed the last half acre she enjoyed it so much (much better and more fun than the JD we had been renting).

2 pointsYes it is on a horse. Been on there since 2016 with no issues. I did not use any relief coils, but did leave some slack in the bends. I've seen copper used on many farm tractors that have been in service since before I was even thought of.
