13 pointsMet Don @Handy Donand his Grandson Samuel today. Got him a transaxle drive pulley for his 854, a 48" snowplow, weights and chains for his sons 310-8 , and some 36" gear drive decks so he can build one to put on the 854. He plans on being at the big show... Tony

5 pointsThe "special ingredients" that made Wheel Horse red, are no longer available. Lead paint was used back in the 50's, 60's and early 70's. So even if the original formula was found, it couldn't be duplicated. The other thing is that with every model year, the paint changed a little due to different paint companies providing the coatings. So, find a color that you like, paint your horse, and that's Wheel Horse red.

4 pointsWell I made some progress today. Rear wheels are off and set in the parts pile. Hubs are soaking with old school Liquid Wrench spray penetrant. Can you peoples believe the hitch pin actually came right out?? A little penetrating oil. A little tapping back n forth. Voila ! Me n' this gas tank had a little talk. It wasn't particularly willing to let go of the valve. @JCM gave me some advice and I figured it out. Thanks Jim!! Some yutz installed the old valve on TOP of the fuel tank holding shelf. The valve was jammed up in between the tank and the shelf completely inoperable. This left a fair upward bow in the bottom of the tank. I got it levered out and cleaned the tank interior and exterior with a handful of 3/8 lock washers and soap and water. I made a gasket for the cap and drilled 2 small holes near the middle for air ventilation. After cleanup I found that this tank has a cast number on it. I assume it's the build date.

4 pointsBefore I get too deep into the magneto, maybe I should check the points. Two years of sitting can do wonders to the surface of points. Will report back tomorrow.

4 pointscompleted the tear down one side was dry the other side still had some oil

3 pointsTurns out after having drained the transmission overnight there was probably less than a quart in this 8-speed. I cleaned off the bottom a little bit and installed a magnetic drain plug. I cleaned off the engine oil drain tube. Tightened up the tube and loosened up the end cap. Drained the engine oil. That was as black as can be. Level was about right. While cleaning that off I discovered that one of the base plate bolts is nearly falling out. Engine oil capacity Tecumseh OHV 160 is verified on the dipstick at 1.5 qts. Filled it with Kinetix HD 30. Got the seat pan taken off so I can have better access to the transmission, brake setup. Those of you who have been to my house will recognize the number on the bottom. I did not put that there. I found that to be a VERY interesting coincidence. Definitely at least two bent rods on this tractor somehow. The one that goes to the brake shoe and the one that is the clutch are both curved and contacting each other. Also found out why someone may have removed the clutch safety switch. Note the bracket that holds it is bent completely down. I wondered about this until I started messing with the clutch linkage and discovered that the pedal actually goes down PAST the point of flat. Haven't the foggiest why that would be.... Not only does this tractor have the very rare flexible steering wheel option but also the multi-piece shifter boot option.

3 pointsGood idea, I figured you had already done that. Section 8 of the Kohler manual in our manuals section is sort of vague as far as resistance values or methods of testing a mag. The question of testing a Magneto has come up on Red Square from time to time so I did a bit of surfing and the simplest explanation I have found was on a site devoted to those Green tractors (sorry about that) I have a NOS magneto coil and a couple of used ones on the shelf and will let you know if my results are the same. The resistance of the secondary should be around 8k to 10k ohms. The resistance of the primary should be around 1.0 ohm. You need a good digital meter to tell the difference between a shorted primary and a good primary. If it really is shorted (unlikely) check the wiring harness where it enters the stator plate and under the clamp for a pinched or bare wire. Both the primary and secondary coils surround an iron core and are grounded through the core to the stator plate. While the points are closed the rotating flywheel magnets induce a voltage and current flow through the primary coil which is made up of a few hundred turns of heavy wire. This current flow creates a magnetic field. When the points open the current flow stops and the field collapses through the secondary coil which is made up of thousands of turns of fine wire. This collapsing magnetic field creates a very high voltage in the secondary due to transformer action and the high voltage arcs across the electrodes in the spark plug. The resistance of the primary is measured between ground (engine, or stator plate if the stator is dismounted) and the wire from the points and condenser. Resistance of the secondary is measured between ground and the spark plug connector at the end of the plug wire

3 pointsI am in the process of building a custom lowered WH tractor based on early 1960's sheet metal. The engineering & design phase is complete and starting the fabrication phase. The power will be provided by an altered 25HP Kohler Command with a Comet CVT clutch. The CVT driver pulley will be mounted on the engine crankshaft and the CVT driven pulley will be mounted on a jack shaft under the battery. A V-belt driver pulley will also be mounted to the jack shaft with the driven pulley mounted on the input shaft of an 8-speed transaxle. The calculated max. CVT ratio is 0.53:1 with a 1:1 V-belt ratio. FYI, a "cast iron" V-belt pulley needs to be balanced at speeds >5000 Ft/Min and max. speed is 6500 Ft/Min. The max. speed of a "steel" pulley is 10,000 Ft/Min. If you spin them faster, you run the risk of a pulley exploding.

3 pointsBeautiful C-160. I've "rescued" 2 of them now. Definitely one of my all time favorites, BEAUTY & the BEAST, I love the old long block Kohlers.

3 pointsAnother "interesting" item on this tractor, not sure if it's true or not but sure would be cool if it was...

3 pointsToday, I replaced the axle seal & idler pulley along with put a new drive belt on my 314-8. After that I finished up running quick disconnect battery cables to the rear hitch.
-
3 pointsI considered that myself, but this is how the service bulletin suggested as the fix. Today I repaired a loose steering arm with the same process. Put a newer pepper pot muffler on and that takes care of the things that needed attention. Then gave it a MMO rubdown, really improved the appearance. I replaced the seat with the style that was originally on it. Now just have to paint the wheels.
-
3 pointsAhhh! the venerable C160! Gotta rank in the top 5? Horses -- and throw in an Auto and that moves it up another notch or 2 (at least on my list!) @pfrederi suggestion is a good un, that motion control can be a bit finiky.

3 pointsThanks Eric for that and all your help. I’m in debt to you for all the info you have provided. Red Square is damn lucky to have guys like you and many others as well. Thanks to you all!!!

3 pointsI use mine with a 42 SD on a c-141. works well for walking path maintenance and getting under low hanging stuff. Turning radius however matches the Queen Mary

2 pointsI purchased this tractor from Bob Ellison. First of all I want to thank Bob for giving me this opportunity. After picking it up on Tuesday I knew it truly was one of his kids. Just know I will take tremendously good care of it. The machine itself looks to be in very good mechanically order. A few little knick knacks, nothing major to complete it. Gas line from tank to fuel pump leaks a bit and it sometimes slips out of neutral and surges usually in reverse. Any ideas with that will be greatly appreciated. Over all I’m tickled pink. I do plan on swapping the seat out with a WH seat of that era. Also putting a proper hitch on it to pull my chipper and trailers around.

2 pointsSeems to me, there is another dump truck style tractor project going in southern Michigan. Last time I visited, I think I saw it on the third shelf up in the magic barn. It was started not long after a large tractor project in Maine. Both projects are currently in about the same state of progress.

-
2 pointsI hear you're donating all of yours! Seriously. I think last year there was a project in progress for a dump truck type tractor for a future show raffle tractor. Perhaps it's done!

2 pointsThis thread is getting dangerously close to being shut down. And this might just do it. Everyone knows the reason why gas is through the roof, but they are afraid to say it. I will. And if you want to shut me down, go ahead. In January of 2021, gas was at an average price of $2.39. The US was energy independent and we were a net exporter of crude oil. A couple of executive orders brought it all to a halt. If you can't figure it out, I'm sorry, you are just blind.
