After seeing what Cas did with one of these and with Cas' help and instruction, I also have (actually 2) of these boxes that I wanted to bring back to life. I inherited these from my Grandfather, who was a big truck mechanic in Chicago. That is why they look so oily and dirty. Here are some before pictures... I took off the lid, front clasp and the one handle, and started cleaning the lid 1st. On the main box, the wood was splitting where the wood screws hold the one side of the hinges. You could look in the screw holes and see light on the other side. I mixed some oak sawdust with Elmer's glue and filled the holes and cracks. Then I managed to back with some strips of wood and and a bunch of clamps to squeeze it together. This is the lid (just cleaned) used paint thinner and a green scrubby. Then looked at the bottom and all of the nails holding that in were rusted and the wood was all cracked and broke. Pulled out the bottom. I had some old, ruff sawn pine, so I cut the pieces, glued it together and then cut the rabbet on the table saw. It fits great, but I have not screwed it in yet...still a couple of thing to do, but the tool box is cleaned and finished with 3 coats of 1 part Boiled Linseed Oil and 2 parts Paint Thinner. I need to find a couple of antique looking handles yet. Thanks Cas. edit...I just want to give credit where credit is due. Here is the thread that was the inspiration for this. I consider myself a "rough carpenter"...Cas is a "Master Furniture Carpenter"...big difference !!!

As you all should be aware, our supporter program is responsible for paying all the bills keeping RedSquare up,and running. If it were not for the generous individuals RedSquare would not exist, and that is a simple fact! Every once in a while, I try to do something exclusive for our supporters, and the timing was perfect. Those of you who follow Eston’s page on Facebook, knows that he creates some remarkable 1:25 scale models of tractors, many are Wheel Horse. He just finished a run of 100 C-160’s which sold out in 4 hours. I was able to get 2, one for me and number 93 to be given away to a lucky supporter. Details will be posted in the supporter exclusive section.

I hooked up the empty pontoon trailer and drove to our Mo. location to get those projects moving again. I learned some things along the way: 1) The trailer safety chains work just fine at 70mph. 2) The empty Paddle King pontoon trailer tows surprisingly well using only the safety chains. 3) The trailer relatively little damage while being towed at 70 mph using only the safety chains. 4) The surrounding drivers become very attentive when they notice an empty Paddle King pontoon trailer being towed with only the safety chains at 70 mph. 5) I need to make it a habit to check the nut on the hitch latch lever for proper tightness before driving away. 7) I need to put a tool box with basic tools in the truck. Fortunately, shortly after I pulled off on the shoulder, an Indiana Highway Helper sponsored by Geico showed up with wrenches, crimp pliers and crimp splices to put everything back together to get me back on the road. As I was driving off, I realized I missed a chance to mess with the Highway Helper guy. I should have asked him if he had noticed a pontoon along the side of the road a ways back.

This year's project of building an entire new garden area from scratch has been going very well. We had 10 yds of loam delivered a few weeks ago. We've been moving it several hundred feet with Trina's 867 hauling her 1976/77 Ohio Steel 10 cubic foot trailer and my '74 C160-8 Cinnamon Horse with a 17 cubic foot trailer. We load them a little more than 1/2 full so they're easier to hand dump. There's maybe 1/4 of the initial pile left. Here's a few pics and a video. Please do feel free to share your own pics/videos of your own grader doing it's thing.

Great job on the restore Steve. Box has incredibly beautiful quarter sawn white or live oak. If you want them I have the proper handles for it. Your choice of which pair or both since you have two boxes. Top pair is cast iron. Bottom pair are steel. I do have more of bottom pair. You may want to build a till for the inside. Looks like it had one. Those boxes obviously have a special meaning for you. Fill them with tools specially if they are from your grandfather and pass them on to the next generation. It’s a great feeling when one is able to instill what one loves and one’s knowledge in others. There can be no greater thank you.

Generac 3000 Watt generator on homemade frame. Generator mounts to frame with a single pin and 1 bolt. Easy hook up. Frame has wheels to roll unit around when off. Sigle bolt applies belt tension. Comes with belt also. This is my favorite implement to display at shows. $350.00 SOLD!!!

Well I guess this is the beginning of an addiction without end Having only owned 1 Wheel Horse tractor these last 26 years and coming here and lusting after the vast array of various models throughout this fine site it is was only natural for me to expand my horizons 😃 A very good & long time friend of mine in P.A. knew of my NEED and brought me down this intact and virtually undisturbed 854. Save for a paint touch up here and there it's interestingly original and solid as a rock! What a great candidate to bring back to life😃 I initially was just going to start disassembly without attempting to see if she will start after many years of hibernation but my curiosity has got the best of me (whose doesn't?) and I have to see if she in fact will do so. I will no doubt be asking questions of you 854 specialist here from time to time so bear with me as I learn about this fantastic little big machine. Dave

Pretty much finished up the power dump cart, installed the rear tail lights with some amber side markers. Only thing left I have to do on it is mount the jack on the neck and make a couple quick disconnect battery cables that will run to a quick disconnect at the hitch on my 314-8 and have some decals being made to put on the sides, but she's 95% complete and tested and works! Also want to build a removable bench seat for rides and a new tailgate but that's next project after fixing 314 axle seal and new idler pully and belt.

Never heard of or tried Goop Jeff. I do have a 4 drawer high filing cabinet made out of Mahogany that I started refinishing some years ago. At that time, I used some kind of paint remover, that you lather on, let work for a time and wipe off. Kind of messy, but the drawers still look like new. That stuff is a lot of work. Cas, I had a feeling you might either have or know where to find handles. How about 2 of the bottom ones?? I think if I tried the cast iron ones, I'd want to fill the chest with Pieces of Eight, Pearls and Jewels.

Told someone, no names, that showing that 520 was evil cause even though I just bought this 417 I bow need to sell it ! I have to make room for my new to me 520H !! I now have to drive 12 hrs round trip to go get it --- I AM CRAZY !!!!!!! of course will keep the grader and wheel weights that I just bought for the 416.

Nice work from EB and BBT. Here is mine: Not a typical mid-mount, but it has some wheels behind it so.. My setup doesn't have the weight, that you would have when mounted under a tractor, sure makes it a bit harder to level nicely. Also the handle is behind me, which is hard to reach. DSC_0633_Trim.mp4

Could be air locked between the bleeder and the injectors. Try cracking all the lines where they go into the injectors and bleed the fuel to that point.

We just picked up two attachments. One is a Brinley disk harrow and the other one is a Wheel Horse single bottom plow. ( or that’s what the guy told us) If anyone has any tips or tricks for the wheel horse bottom plow for a manual for it it would help a lot. Also, the adjuster on the bottom plow is not moving right now so if anyone has a trick to get it free it would help. Both things will be going on a 312-8 and I don’t really know how the bottom plow hooks up so if anyone has any pictures or anything with it being hooked up it would help. We were just going to get the disk harrow but the kind guy let us take it for free! I’ll be using them both to till up the garden along with my C-145 with a rototiller.

A couple GT14 things @953 nut …. I’m super happy to have a dedicated 3 point tiller tractor with a very low hour rebuilt engine and some bling of a @19richie66 tank! The roll of duct tape needs changing, but it’s comfy and will be a great worker once I take care of a few little things!

One can use a variety of things to clean wood objects. The purpose of object and of cleaning is important. Essentially the idea when cleaning a wood object is to remove the grime and the dirt loosely adhered to it without changing the character of the wood underneath it ,and very importantly without adding anything else to it. Speaking specifically about Goop the following is true. It is a paste with waxes or oils and colorant in it. It will imbed itself in pores and leave all those ingredients which will definitely alter woods character and may detrimental to many additional finishes one may want to use on it. It will be hard to clean it off the wood without rinsing it which obviously one does not want to do. Paint thinner or mineral spirits is a tried and true method of doing it. It will leave nothing behind and it evaporates fast and totally. It will not raise wood’s grain. While wet it will give you a very good idea on how wood will look if one wants to oil it. It will loosen and remove most imbedded dirt without altering patina if used properly. What it does not remove is probably best left alone. After all if what one wants is a new look then sanding is in order.

There's a couple of members in Virginia who rebuild these Kohlers on a regular basis, at a reasonable cost and from what I understand very high quality. I wouldn't hesitate to start a serious conversation with either of them if I wanted a new engine: @richmondred01 @oldredrider ---------------- Edit: I should have added... There's a ton of other guys on this forum who are fully capable of rebuilding these engines (I am not one of them ). I didn't mean to exclude anyone.

@SPINJIM That is exactly what I am worried about...ie...my wife or kids not knowing what something is worth, not necessarily for money, but for sentimental value. Not getting the chance to be able to save something dear to you is sad. It becomes more important to let others, you love, as we get older know what your wishes are. It's happening more and more. We collect all these things, and then we pass...can't take it with you. Bargains at estate sales or pass it on to those that may appreciate it. That becomes the mission. My advice...don't collect stamps...no body cares. Want to see my wine collection??? Now you are talking.

I will have some 1 inch dogpoint set screws with lock nuts for sale at the Big Show. These longer set screws make it much easier to get on and off your shifter on your manual transmissions on your Wheel Horse tractors. $2 at the Big Show just look or ask for Lane Ralph.

I have lived in this house since 1988. Power has gone out for like a total of about 5 hours. ( I know tempting fate) It comes out for the Steam Pageant for 3 days. Collecting dust. It's just time and I can use the cash.

That wasn't a option when I picked up my lombardini, that thing was nice and greasy, weighing around 180lbs. That would have left a nice mark on those leather seats haha. I have a 14hp, the engine is tall, I need a 4" hood lift to have enough room for the diesel monster
  38. 3 points
You "need" both. 😀 They really do have different performance characteristics. Thanks man! There's a BUNCH of organic material mixed in with the dirt the excavator laid out. That was the existing soil from where it lies. There were some smaller trees in there, branches, and a nice layer of tall thick grass. Should be an excellent plant growth mix.

Got done this evening as planned. Re tamp entire floor, double check for sharp rocks etc, lay down a layers of 10mil ?? Black plastic that overlap in the center abt 4 layers thick (rotated rectangles the length of the pool diameter),pool noodles, and retired carpeting from the basement, some of which was stored out in the shop and is none too clean but will do fine for this!..tomorrow the pretty layer...the liner itself.

Awesome stuff EB! It would have been great to bury some dead and down logs u def all that dirt, to feed the soil.

So this is the fix I had laying around. A customer of mine did me a solid, welding it up I just wished he welded the inside edge instead of the outside but I cannot complain. Just need to drill mounting holes.

Steve - what did you apply the linseed oil and thinner mix with? If you used a cloth, I hope you did not crumple it up and throw it in the trash. That mixture in a crumpled up rag will self ignite under some conditions.

I've read about cleaning up old wooden objects with "GOOP" hand cleaner. I haven't tried it myself, but keeping it in mind if the need ever arises. You guys ever try this, or even recommend it? Does it work?

Wonder if i could sneak even a small one under Dug's FEL subframe and utilize the old hydraulic deck lift??? While the end loader can do most of the dragging and grading, there are times where a mid mount especially if ya could lower one end a bit more than the other would be the shiznizzle for finishing up!
