Been looking for something to set out with my yard art tractor and today I found it ( actually my wife found it) No… it doesn’t generate electricity

Ed I have a couple of logging chains and some leather give me the go ahead and I rig up something that we can hook Skunky into . You provide the buggy whip . !/8 horse power tractor with a @squonk in front.

Skip the gas, diesel and electric motors and go totally green.

the sky's the limit! I see two Kohler 8hp engines. One to run the hydro, the other to provide belt driven power to the snow cone / margarita maker! It is time to get a little practical.

Fired up the 875 today. Hasn't been started or driven since the last time I used it this winter to plow some snow. Remember this tractor was purchased as a parts machine. It had a blown engine and @squonkpicked up a replacement engine for me at last years Big Show. Thanks to who ever sold it to Mike and thank you Mike for selling it to me. It runs great and it saved this tractor from being disassembled. I also tried to take Jeffrey for a ride in the back of the 1075 and trailer. He kept jumping out to bite the tires. His loss.

You don't need the bolts unless you have the later model tractors 300, 400. 500 and maybe the Black Hoods not sure about them. The C-series needs good rubber stops between the hinge. I used some of the large 5/8" diameter tubeless valve stims cut them off about 1/2" above the sealing groove and pulled the brass stem out. Did that about 25 years back and they are still working. I had some extra 5/8" valve stims that I don't use any more.

The Eaton 6 hydro was used in the '70s 800 series. A totally different frame mounting system.

Thanks for sharing your story. To potentially brighten up your day.. i'm 'only' 35 years young and I can appreciate machines like Wheel Horse, but also other examples of (agricultural) engineering very much. Maybe i'm old fashioned but I would rather teach my kids how to drive a tractor or other motorized vehicle or teach them how to fix stuff than to teach them how to play *insert random game* on their iPad or computer.. On the other hand, i'm not going to force anything on them. They should grow up how they are and not like a mini-me. So I hope they take over my interests (and maybe my stuff) but that's up to them.

So a quick side project to make a wardrobe door holder for one of the cabins. Stops the doors flying open when the ship rolls. The lady who's cabin it is in is also a farmer on a small island in Shetland so the sheep was a personal touch.

Basically finished. The chart is one that was actually in use and even has our pencilled in course lines and hand written notes It's also the guys home port. Looks a lot better in the flesh, will give it to him tomorrow.

That may work Jimmy, but I need power year round. Guess I could adopt the Squonk. Another dependent would really help my income tax. Wonder how much a Squonk eats.

Lots of excellent suggestions. Maybe combine them? A pedal start gas engine which starts a fair sized diesel which is powering a generator which charges the batteries which sends the juice to an electric motor which turns the hydro transmission.... AND the margarita production machine.

You bring up an important point. I'm using a cloth belt like an 8-speed Drive belt. @Oldskool Mike reminded me that mowers use rubber belts. I'm thinking now that maybe this application should be a rubber belt... NOT a cloth sided belt??

The pulleys are not always the same thickness that's why I like to align the centers and not the edge.

Hard saying what a dealer would do to make a sale. At some point in it’s life (late 70’s?) this RS-83 Ride Away Senior was traded in for new and repainted to “today’s new” scheme.

We just have the lamp up on the bridge to look at the chart. I also left a trail of bread crumbs behind us - you just follow the line of seagulls back home!

Any idea while the PO disconnect the fuel pump? When the gas level in the tank is at the carb level you have no gravity to feed gas to the carb. Those metal pumps can be disassembled and gently cleaned. Rebuild kits are available from "Then and Now Automotive".. google their name. Electric fuel pumps are also a simple option.

Forget the Electric, thankfully this isn't Tesla! You want dependability to make several laps of the Fairgrounds. Looks like a gear transmission back there. Put a good old K series in it and up the pulley size to increase speed a little. You can put a nice two person bench seat on that platform, maybe even enough room for a sleeping bag. Strap some 5 gallom buckets on the back and have a mobile Jethro Clampitt sales mobile.

First time getting it dirty since restore. Grading the driveway and getting covered in dust. Love the decals from @vinylguy. The bottom picture is from the day I brought it home.

Here to watch the show. I say a diesel engine, running a a generator, that runs a 10hp 240v electric motor. Or use what ever you have laying around in 5gal pails.

Real pillars of the community. Or would that be pillagers?
  27. 4 points
If you go electric you are going to need a long drop cord to get around the Fairgrounds.

Well, since I sold my show rider at the Steam-o-Rama last week, I'm trying to get a ride running for the Big Show. I found enough junque to put a roller together. Now I need a motor or engine. Electric or gas, front or rear mount? All ideas considered.

Sure are....You guys are full of it....... ehum ideas. Maybe I should clarify how this buggy will be used. I won't be needing speed or a parachute to get it stopped. Remember 55 years ago, I got to drive the Old Reliable on the street before Dave Strickler and Bill Jenkins took over. This will be a Side by Side two seater with a small stake body for cruising shows. Who knows, If it is comfortable enough, Mrs K may join me . It will also be my transporter to my deer stand, so it may have a bow rack and a winch to load venison. OK, keep em coming.

Another bit of FYI when I first bought my C160 Automatic I was working on this old house a guy was building up--I was doing Heat and Air and Electrical on it but I worked a lot of jobs from place to place for this guy.--when he said he needed to find someone to mow his yard/weed patch really it was waste high in most places. I was not in the business to do that but I told him I would cut it for $100.00 while I was over there and try out my C160 he said ok--So the next day I showed up with it and the fight was on--I think I mowed it 2 times and Maybe a bit of it more than that in some places--it was sure a big weed patch. But the wheel horse C160 did a great job--like I said these are real tough tractors. Good Luck

Likely bypassed without understanding the implications or options for repair. Not long ago I rebuilt one of these with a jungle-sourced diaphragm and new gasket and it's doing fine. I did have to gently flatten the faces on the two halves of the pump body as there were a couple of high spots that would have led to leakage. Depending on age, the two one-way valves might be peened in or removable. They can be gently cleaned in place so I'd skip removing unless necessary. The "then and now" kit includes new valves, if you need them.

Right. Great idea. So if you follow the chart does the ship also travel in a circle?? Doesn't matter. The bread crumbs routine never fails.

That's actually an Eaton 6 hydro. They have some interesting features including a plunger type tow /drive valve that makes for easy no load engine starting when in the tow position and a positive parking brake.

You made me think of that climate convention in Scotland and that hotel the officials were staying in that had to bring in diesel generators to charge all the green electric busses lolz.

Gave my VStrom an oil/filter change today. It’s been exactly 2 years since it’s last oil change. Only put 800 miles on it in those 2 years Eleven year old bike with under 8000 miles.

@Retierd Wrencher thanks , always been a stickler for detail function , so when I encountered a trouble spot , would just plan a correction .realize that this breaks with original set up , but it does not have to be radical to make it work reliably . very often my wiring detail improvements are hiding in plane site , big difference is chronic problem is gone , isn't what you want ? big 3 for me is , wire grounding , routing . mechanical function and ease of use. plow , and mower deck ease of operation . have to be fed up with original detail lacking , setup . went step by step , and corrected and improved as I went . eliminate rust and sloppy linkage end points , firm up and lubrication , makes things work seamlessly . every time I engage my mower deck set up , I marvel at how easily it works , and its very quiet too . this is only me , have my original c-85 , 40 years , experiment , improve , pete

Quick update, running the 42" rear discharge deck for the first time and the clutch is handling with ease even in tall grass. Will examine the 60" side discharge in more detail later. Thanks for all the advice everyone, you guys know your stuff and think of everything 👍🏻

Well for all of you contemplating this thread, I will share my journey with you. The first thing to remember is that none of your children really want anything that you have. Yes, there are exceptions, but in general your heirloom furniture, gold rimmed china, and wheel horse tractor collections are not something the younger generation wants. So, when I decided to move to Florida, I made the decision to sell it off. Some items went to RS members, others were sold on CL. A neighbor bought a 416H and one bought a lawn roller. A few CL buyers were enthusiasts and I gave them all my spare parts. The last to go was my restored C141, aka "The Baby". I would have liked to take it to FL but no room to keep it and nothing for it to do. That was probably a mistake as I think back with fond memories of the restoration process and letting the grandkids drive it around. Time waits for no one. Things have changed in "the Wheel Horse World" Parts and equipment are harder to find, more costly, and are just not in as good condition. RS members that I used to follow on the forums are disappearing. The older generation who really appreciates these fine machines are departing. I bought my first horse in 1979 and in 2011 I discovered RS. For the next 7 years I accumulated 5 tractors, multiple decks, snow plows, a bucket loader, a dethatcher, a trailer, a lawn roller, cast iron wheel weights, suitcase weights, and multiple spare parts. It was a great time in my life, but it was time to move on. I check into RS from time to time just to reminisce. The memories are great and I am thankful for those members I met (virtually) along the way. Cheers to all of you Don
