10 pointsWell woke the herd up from their winter slumber. Got to take off the blower, do all maintenance, then puttem to work! Meet the herd from blower back His, Dads, Hers, and Mr. Cool. Decided those were appropriate names since the the one with the blower is mine. Next is Dads since this one was my dads and now is semi-retired, Hers was bought for the Mrs. and Mr Cool since when this model came out, I thought is was a cool tractor that Wheel Horse came out with. 8 pointsI may soon be the next keeper of this ‘64 GMC 7000. It’s got a 6-71 Detroit Diesel and a 5 speed + hi-low (not twin stick though). I have a buddy who purchased a farm and this is taking up space. He’s got a couple 2-3 jobs that need doing and he said if I help him out on a few things I can have it. @Achto @WHX?? not a terrible deal, huh? @ebinmaine I might need some big rig shifting lessons, this has a throw of the shifter about as long as my wingspan! As much as I love the sound of the Screamin’ Jimmys, I’m considering pulling the bus drivetrain for a bit more modern system. Who knows.

6 pointsI got and added the suspension to the 416 seat and I gotta say it's a much better ride! I know they don't belong there per say but there are no other holes in the seat pan to mount them like they should be but instead of guessing and drilling I improvised and they work good there. Something really special followed me home today a 520-8 with electric lift! I made the 5 hour trip to NY to pick it up didn't get it dirt cheap but he also threw in a free snow blade with it also!

5 pointsHave had a chance to test it out and I am very pleased with the performance. Mounting the ball to the left of the bracket allows me the see the coupling when I line up to connect.

5 pointsNot sure about Michigan licensing laws. In Wisconsin a truck of that size can be registered quarterly. Some farmers choose this option so that they don't pay registration while the truck is sitting during the off season.

5 pointsA truck for a little sweat sounds like a great deal to me. There are usually 2 ways to shift with a split rear end. 1st with the rear split in low, stay in 1st and shift the rear to high, drop the rear to low as you go into 2nd, bring the rear back into high, etc. Or run through the gears in low, shift the rear end to high & start over. Once you get used to driving with out using the clutch to shift you may just find your self driving every standard transmission that way. At least that is the way I now drive them.

4 pointsI use my 702 for mowing, not a large lawn, takes about 20 minutes. Last year, I noticed a sluggish turn of the starter/generator. I knew the battery replacement was long over due, so I replaced it last fall. The tractor still ran and started, but I could still see some smoking coming from around the key switch. It has set all winter, as I use the 857 for moving snow. I am ready now to tackle the issue. I pulled up the wiring diagram, but I have the conversion of the HY-2 which moves the wires around the switch. The HY-2 put a sheet metal thingy on the side of the tower, out of the way of the canister that stores the hydraulic fluid' I do not have the key with a starter button. Not a big deal. I have what is there and it works. I am going to check wires and replace them (12 gage)??...and 6 gage where the diagram shows. I may have to open the starter/generator and see how the brushes look and the magnets. I kind of think some grounds are bad. There are a lot of 702's out there. My plan is to take lots of pictures and document this process. I could also use a little help.

4 pointsMade the tower for the toplink and the upper pivot. Also found a helium tank for party balloons and repurposed it. This will become the hydraulic tank. Bought a breather cap and welded it on. I'll wait with welding the rest of the fittings on until I get the pump in place. I've ordered two 3/4" weld on fittings for the feed and return lines. I'm hoping those are big enough? That's all for now.

4 pointsYah you would have to go knocking on grower's doors and asking. They run into a bind with a break down and have to move grain you would be their ace. Would help $$ if you could license it as a farm truck. You got some tillable acres now maybe you can sneak under farm laws?

4 pointsI always "upsize " cables when I can. Here's why: I had a 84 Honda Goldwing. These are known for hard starting when hot. I had to get push started by my riding buddies a couple of times. Embarrassing! I bought a brand new 450 CCA battery, new starter and all new 6 ga. cables. All OEM. It improved things but I still had starting issues when hot. Took the cables off an had a set of 4 ga. cables made up to match the length and ends. Put those on and it felt like the starter was going to flip the bike over it cranked so fast. hot or cold.

The big question regarding the future of the current drivetrain is, “what would you use it to do?” If you plan to use it regularly on major highways, the modern drivetrain would probably be the way to go. However, if the current drivetrain is in decent to good shape and you are going to use it in a more “local” context, I’d say leave it as the General created it. Eric’s first post in this thread a couple of years ago, set the tone for the big rigs and I love post #46 with the multiple YouTube Screamin’ Jimmy’s—classic! I can’t wait to see what you decide…

4 pointsYou drive that Ole BEAST a bit ....and you'll leave it right alone. Nothing compares to rakin' through gears in an old skool rig. Modern stuff is certainly easier to move.... But got no style. Shifting by double clutch or no clutch on a non synchronized transmission is a good skill to have. You'd pick it up pretty quick. Awesome truck!!

4 pointsIt can be done but there's more to it than a simple piece of metal being inserted. The drive belt and all the brake/clutch/hydro linkage will likely need to be modified. I have a 7" spacer in my Colossus tractor but that's hardly a stock build so not worth considering as an example for your own usage.

3 pointsPicked up this 1054 yesterday off a friend and member here of Red Square, Russ, or as he is known by his screen name SALTYWRIGHT. She runs and drives, little stumble in the carb which should be an easy fix. Original oil bath air cleaner is on and functioning! Newer tri-ribs up front and old (maybe original?) rear AG’s. Has a dual battery setup from back when it had a diesel power plant, but the original Kohler 10 is back in it so I may go back to a single battery setup. PTO parts are off it but I have most of them in a box. Will access what I have and don’t before the WH Show, anything I need should be there for sale. No big plans for it, maybe a couple subtle changes to make it “mine” so to speak. Obligatory pictures….

3 pointsHoly Starter Switch Batman !!! I started this thread yesterday, come down here this morning and I see all this OUTSTANDING information. Got an 80 degree day today. I was going to pull out the 702 and take some pictures, now I have to pull it out. Thanks guys. I do not have the push button start on this horse. I have a feeling the HY-2 was added after the horse was bought. I wonder if the Dealer may have re-wired it at that point.

3 pointsYah and his name is @Achto. And they are nice ones and end with a four letter word starting with F. for you, maybe even Tuna. I'm sure he would make some for ya but not Squonky.... Dave Brown @new2horses has the replacement 70 amp switch if you don't want to go back to the OEM heavy start switch. Better yet if you can make it till Portage show bring her up and we'll rewire it there. Give us something to do other than drink.... My 70 amp switch smokes abit too but only when the SG locks up due to a non-acr cam. Hosen says letter smoke!

3 pointsFella I used to work for said they're 2 kinds of diesels. One you drive like you own it. The other you drive like you stole it. A lot of the older 2 stroke diesel engines are the latter. Idle to redline, shift. Repeat.

3 pointsI did a fair amount of work for NASA in my shop. Every tapped hole in anything had to have Heli-Coil type of inserts. If it is good enough to go to the moon, it will be good enough for your tractor.
