12 pointsIt is so heavily made, much better than the ones for sale new. All cast iron transaxle. Heavy angle iron frame. Just so well built. Real glass headlights. Is the 520 the last of the wheel horse line with a cast iron transaxle? I see now why you folks like these

12 pointsWell didn’t actually work on a WheelHorse but this York rake is going on a C-145. It was rust frozen. @TonyToro Jr. and I worked everything loose then oiled and greased it up. It will be doing work shortly.

7 pointsJust wanted to share, picked up an 875 yesterday from up north in Washington yesterday. PO had it for about 15 years as his dedicated mower. Seems mostly original. I’m new to WHs and have a question about this one: I haven’t engaged the mower just yet (took the belt off from engine to the mule drive pulley to help get the engine started) but is there a way to ‘lock’ the right-side pedal so the mower stops spinning (rather than continually holding the pedal down)? thanks!

7 pointsHey everyone. I am new to this forum and a new owner of a ‘91 Wheelhorse 520-H. I am also a Jeep guy so am no stranger to turning my own wrenches. Looking forward to learning from everyone here as I restore as well as use this fine little tractor.

7 pointsPut the 22 lb ham in to oven at 5AM Peeled and sliced 10 lb of Idahos for cheesy scallopes and 5 lb of yams for candied spuds. Last count....28 coming for Easter dinner at noon. The ham is smelling good, tables set, and spuds ready. Part of our celebration always includes many games...egg hunts, scavanger hunts, egg tossing, jelly bean jar guesses, and hat decorating contest. Some of the Ladies spend weeks designing and decorating hats. I took a 5 minute break and finished mine. @Stormin you were right, I had to add a few more tables.

6 pointsYesterday I got back to playing welding and fabrication for a day. I bought a cheap universal trailer hitch off eBay years ago and also got another one on a tractor purchase along the line. The weld beads were usable but had very poor penetration and lacked strength. I cut/ground the welds off and rebuilt one of those hitches. Last year I made a fair attempt at another welding project. I wanted to build my own Super Heavy Duty trailer hitch for a Horse that would happily hold the Boat Winch Crane I have mostly done. I did fairly well but being new to welding and fabrication I tacked it up ON the jig (a 60s vintage 3 speed transmission) but removed it to finish welding. When done I found the legs that bolt to the transmission were both twisted. One just slightly, still usable. The other was pretty severe. I had asked @Pullstart for his thoughts... Well I took his advice on this and left the sucker clamped right to the transahmashion during the WHOLE welding process. Today I spent an hour or so cutting apart the twisted portion. (one leg). I left one side welded a little so it would stay together while I could manipulate it as needed. I tried some 6011 rod. It's ok but a serious Pain in the @$$. I can burn that stuff just enough to get a repair done if I needed. Tried some 5/32 7014. Too thick/too hot. Tried some 3/32 7014. NIIIIICE. So off I went arcing for a little while. Wasn't happy with some of the beads I'd make so I grind em out and re-weld. I still have 2 beads and some finish work (grinding) to do on the main beams then I'll add the lower supports that goes down to the cross pin. Pics later....

6 pointsI've met @nylyon Karl, @stevebo and @Sparky Mike in person. Spoken to @stevasaurus by phone. All wonderful people. As I understand the history, This was born as a Wheelhorse forum. Redsquare in it's current form... To me.... Is an everything forum. This is the only social media I use, and the only one I have any intention of using. As I write this, https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/forum/7-non-tractor-related-discussion/ has over 10,000 threads with 157,855 posts. Near as I can figure that makes Redsquare a partial "Non-Wheelhorse" site as well. I've posted many threads with questions and statements on subjects (within the rules) all across the spectrum. I've gotten some incredibly good and generously shared answers and advice. I can only speak/write for myself here.... Please do keep posting your "ain't a Horse" stuff. You do some fine work and I find it interesting. Signed, The Large Bear. Hiram Maine. 🐻 🤠

5 pointsI had to get back on this project. It needs a thread of it's own. Bill finished his, and mine has been about half-done for months. I had previously tested it, and it cuts great with excellent clipping dispersal. I haven't planned to use it with my 520-H, but I did test it on that machine with great results. One great advantage was that there are no clippings that get into the Onan at the flywheel. Anyway, the caster setup worked fine, but was just too big for use with anything that has a standard front axle, and even on the 520 it was a pain to get it on and off the tractor. So I'm going back to 'normal' gage wheels, but not using the adjustment quadrant like a standard WH deck. As it is right now, I'll have 6 possible cut heights using hitch pin placement to set it, and they go up to almost 4 inches at the highest setting. I've also dropped the carrier down closer to the deck in the hopes of making installation and removal easier. The first pics below are from the original design and testing. The pics without casters are the new wheel design. I'll be testing it this week and then painting afterward. I still have to add scalp wheels too.

5 pointsSo this seems to be moving along at the snail speed of Colossus (Sorry Eric, couldn't help it! LoL) And the only thing I'm a master of is baiting. It's a lot slower going than things were 10 years ago. Had some time to fiddle around on this Friday afternoon, some yesterday and some today. Mocked up a little bit on the front end suspension by making brackets and such to see how it would look then realized something will need to be done about the steering geometry to avoid bump steering or at least minimize it. If the tie rod ends aren't positioned correctly it will bump steer on it's own as each axle moves up and down. Pretty sure it's figured out how to proceed with that and made some parts but it definitely consumed some time instead of getting more parts stuck on there. I realize the purists might jump on this for cutting those axles but I probably have 5 or 6 and picked the worst two to use. There's always a bunch down at the big show if you need one. I was going to use other type axles but needed these to be short as possible so the front isn't wider than the back. Those coil overs are kind of tall for this build as shorter ones would probably look better to scale but these were already in stock from a long ago purchase. .

5 pointsWent for a nice hike this morning/early afternoon. I rested a bit when we came home while BBT went into standard puttering mode. After I set a bit I filled my larger chainsaw with gas and oil and commenced to slicing up some firewood.

5 pointsHappy Easter everyone! Iowa weather!!! Sunny one day snowing the next! IMG_0654.MOV

5 pointsBeen a minute but I swapped the mower deck back over from the 416 onto the D160 and pulled the 42" RD our of hiding and ordered a load of parts for it to get it back into shape to mow with. I was never crazy about how the 48" cut under the 416 seemed like it could have turned a little faster to cut better. It definitely turns faster under the D160 and mows cleaner. I also ordered a set of seat springs and bumpers for the 416 because it apparently never came with them judging by the lack of wear marks on the fender pan and it's a rough ride without them. Now to give them a bath and wax for the mowing season.

4 pointsGot a show coming up next Saturday...just a one day show 100 miles from home...probably won't take a tractor for just one day...but planning on taking all our engines...so we got them all out for a run...this is the first time all 4 Maytags have been out together. The poor old 1946 Model 72 didn't want to start. We got the LB out too...wanted to teach Tasha how to start it before the show. Cranked and cussed at it for 15 minutes before I realized I didn't open the fuel valve on the mixer opened her up and she ran with one quick flip of the flywheel

4 pointsHere's a pic of the hitch I built last year and repaired yesterday. Still not happy with the top weld on the right so I'll grind/reweld later. Lower braces will be added later. I've considered adding a piece to the top as well. Maybe a bent sheet of 1/8" thick by 6" wide or whatever... slid between the transmission and seat pan... Don't know yet.

4 pointsI have that same exact rake, found it in the scrap metal pile at the dump. It was like brand new, the tines had about a half inch of paint worn off of them. It really works well. I still can’t believe someone would throw that out 🤔

4 pointsYou will find a lot of us have more then just one, one for mowing, one for snow removal, one for hauling stuff, one for plowing dirt, one cause you just wanted another one, one for ............... fill in the blank. They grow on you. The more you work with them, the more you like them. Same with the people here. The more you read and follow the topics on Red Square the more you will begin to see that we are all like minded in our love for these machines. Do yourself a favor and join. With a membership you can post as many photos as you want. You will also get many many many years of experience that may or may not be helpful come time you need it. As a matter of fact we will all give you our opinion weather you need or ask for it anyways !!! I speak for all of us when I say " You got a picture of your Wheel Horse "? We love pictures !!!!
-
4 pointsI'm already kinda thinking I might need another one, one for mowing and one for blowing snow. 😁
-
4 pointsYou think you are happy now, just wait and see how excited you get when you buy your SECOND one !!! Welcome to the club !!

4 pointsA common 1/4" roll pin about an inch long will do the trick for you. Tap it in to the hole leaving about a 1/4" sticking out. That small peddle should pivot. Here is how it should look in the disengaged position. When you step on the small peddle it should lift up over the roll pin to engage the PTO. When you step on the large peddle the small one should snap down behind the roll pin to hold it in the disengaged position.

4 pointsWoke up the FEL from its winter nap and turned over the compost piles. Tried to move and turn another pile but the ground was too wet and the tires were digging more than the loader. Half a dozen bricks in my ruts gave the rear weight box clearance so I could get out. Changed the belt on the snowblower tractor 520H. Took about four tries and I think I figured out what the PO did and corrected it. That's a story for another thread. Maybe later today in the implements and attachments section
-
4 pointsSounds like the roll pin might be missing from just inside the foot rest. The little lever on the pedal should catch on the pin holding the deck disengaged. See if there is a hole thru the footrest bar where a roll pin should be. Get us a close up of the pedal area or Maybe one of the fellas has got a pic of how it should be. We should get this fixed as a real safety hazzard in the day before safety switches. Sure is a nice looking survivor. In case you didn't know it a 875 is a desirable tractor for us hardcore collectors. First year for a hydro or "wheelamatic".
-
4 pointsThe deck 'shell' is stamped out for several models with various lift mechanisms and drive pulley setups...some for vertical shaft engine tractors (1st 3 pics) , some for horizontal shaft (last 2).
-
4 pointsThe deck cutting height should actually be fixed by the position of the two rear wheels on the deck. The deck should not be hanging from the lift mechanism while mowing. With the mower deck installed, the lift lever is full down for mowing and full up up for transport. Download this file and follow the deck cutting height and deck leveling instructions. The mid position knob #40 is used to adjust the working height of a snowblower, tiller, or mid mount grader blade.

4 pointsHusband just had to mow already!!! Lol… said there was spots that was tall and looked bad…. Pretty sure it was just an excuse…! Lol… he loves the photo shoots in front of the flag!! Wind was blowing flag perfectly! Happy Easter weekend everyone! Remember the reason for the season!

3 pointsThis is my second 74 B-80 this year. So that is why the title. Someone did a bad paint job on it but passable for a worker. Also, the transmission is little funky but working it out. I enjoy this Hobie very much but done for a while = Yard work now. Still have the commando to finish up. I was happy that the original muffler was in good shape. Do not see many of these 74`s with that muffler. Hope you enjoy the picks Happy Easter.

3 pointsAnd 27-30 is enough to have for when friends and family stop by for a ride!

3 pointsBack tracking to yesterday. The guys from work showed up and gave us a hand swamping the road to the new campsite. 375ft long x 18ft wide. Today, getting some parts painted for the little racey mower.

3 pointsGreat machine! Keep that back cylinder clean and it’ll run a very long powerful time! The 520Xi was produced after the 520H and 520-8 series, that also had a cast UniDrive and a truck like stamped frame. No MTD garbage stamping… thick and TALL!
-
3 pointsHappy Easter y’all! @ebinmaine, I’m looking forward to seeing those welding pictures! Good bad and ugly, the best ways to learn are through failure. @Handy Don, a good friend of mine once said he has a goal to fail at least once a day AND learn from it!
-
3 pointsThanks! But I do give most credit to Erv Troyer who got it going for Dave Mercer the previous owner. See post 14. He and Dave were very helpful early on with history and direction… I’ve been blessed to be putting the finishing touches on their great efforts…

3 pointsHouse was built in 1984. My sons house that had it was built in 1980. I use a pump sprayer and mist it wet and carefully remove with s putty nice. I try not to get to to wet so as it to soak the Sheetrock paper under it to much.
