Betting it was the seat that did it in.

The owner of Novella's scrap yard in Danbury Ct [203-743-5275] called me about this tractor. It seems to be in good shape the engine is free turns over with pull rope. Must have been taken care of the deck looks nice no exterior rust. The big selling point is it has a branded John Deere seat. Good luck if you end up with it.

So my go-to flashlights are nothing special, just something so I can see on my way to start the generator. Hardware store quality is fine by me. But…if it’s old flashlights…then yes I have a weird addiction. I suspect I was bit by the flashlight bug back in the Boy Scouts. Always had to have one camping back then. All: While I had the frame stripped of all hardware on the 502 I am building, I addressed the localized wear issue on the 1/2 inch diameter pivot shaft where both ends go thru the frame. The plan is to machine the frame to accept 2 flanged sintered bronze bushings with a longer contact length on the shaft. The original had a poor L to D (Length to Diameter) ratio of about .5 to 1, (and a less than desirable steel on steel design) the 3/4" long bushing gives it 1.5 to 1. I am not a fan of using a pistol drill to drill and ream the enlarged holes; I wanted to add a shallow .090 deep counterbore to capture the bushing and leave about .015 of the flange sticking out after fly cutting, so off to the milling machine. Some folks may criticize machining a sintered bushing that it closes off the pores - got an issue - go grab a tissue!! I intend to remove about .040 from the backside of the cast iron lever at assembly. Notice in the first picture that there was no contact at the inside of the welded lever - the holes thru the frame plate are oversized - only the holes in the frame rails did the locating. Generally just be prepared to be in a Wheel Horse wonderland! I call it my annual pilgrimage! I attended the second or third show and have only missed three since then. Dang kids graduating high school, I asked if they could just video it and that didn’t go over well 😂 Then I had to go to a friends wedding one of those years. I can’t wait to see everyone in June 👍🏻

My 418-C had been stored under a tarp, about half the paint stayed on the tarp. A bit of paint and a new set of decals from @Vinylguy were a big improvement.

I haven't been since 2008, but if anything it's probably gotten better. Family friendly, very relaxed fun. Bring a pop up shade. Some bring 10x10 style canopies to set up inside the track. It gets pretty hot! Some folks camp on the grounds. Some stay in hotels overnight nearby. Tends to be more than a half hour drive daily for that. More red tractors than anywhere else you'll find!

Yesterday 70 and Sunny, today 16 and 6 inches of snow, gotta love it..... March in Pa.!

Got around 6-8" of the stuff here but the horses stayed put because its going to be 40 tomorrow and 60s for the week. My sights are set on warm days and green grass!

Thanks much for the Birthday wishes and the laughs. Spent most of my day doing the body work on my 867, slinging mud & making dust. Parts finally came in for the engine on this tractor today as well, Happy Birthday me! Heading out the door with the wife now to go to a FFA Alumni banquet/pig roast. Smoked pig & a few drinks sounds like a great way to end out my Birthday. Thanks again!!

Got the backside and underneath of the side panels and footboard’s sanded and primed… painted the underside of the Work Horse seat pan with Rustoleum Smoke Gray… getting closer to riding !

I tend to not collect or buy any plastic flashlights unless they have something cool about them. These are a few of my plastic and Bakelite ones. The Schlitz lite speaks for itself as far as coolness goes. Plastic military flashlights do somewhat interest me. The short gray one uses one D cell and has a pin to clip it to yourself. I believe it’s to assist a search crew looking for you. We all (old guys anyway) remember the free loooong flashlight that Radio Shack gave out every Christmas? I think it was a ploy to get your address and phone number ! The yellow one that is on was given to me by Russ @SALTYWRIGHT and that’s what makes that one special to me.

Today i went to A to Z tractors and was very happy to get my shifting issue fixed I’ve posted on the forum before asking how to fix it and so while I was there today Lincoln took a look and fixed me right up. I guess my engine puly was off center and that was causing problems. I also got new foot rests that I’ve wanted for a long time. I also helped 857lover who is my buddy get his new trans swap finished.

I hear you. My neighbor ran that scrap yard for years. His shop is filled with working equipment from there. This 16 Automatic came from there it did not run when I brought it home exhaust valve was burnt and the carb bowl had a whole in it from rot. Runs great now. The sheet metal is perfect other than the rust.

Happy Happy Dan! Took him out for fish fry last nite and @Vinylguy and I got him a set of game changer cornhole bags. Joel our Simplecity buddy got him a blind hole bearing puller set. You won't be able to sell out of your trailer in the "infield" ( horse shoe shaped) area. You will have to find a spot out in the perimeter.

Bring extra cash, lots of good deals on just about everything WH. I always make a list of needs and say I am holding to it.......has not worked out to good. Watch or participate in the Big Show Buy Sell Trade thread if you are looking to sell or want something specific. Take lots of Pics, it goes fast.

Bathrooms and showers on grounds. Local church serves food including homemade pies. Admission and parking are free. Basically flea market for wheel horse tractors and parts only. You'll have a great time. Ask who belongs to Red Square....

New beefed up steering thru the dash with dry sleeve bearing and thrust washers and thrust bearing at the collar. Ready for assembly. Thanks to Eric Friedrichsen as his post on the dry bearing help here. I decided to put the bearing under the lip and notched the nut for the circuit board.

Although The Flasher may be a perfect fit after divulging "weird addictions" and "boy scouts"! LoL

Does it work on spouses and grandkids too??

If you decide to do duallys, here’s an idea that is totally adjustable to different offsets… they worked great… 12” pvc pipe.

This one will get a good cleaning, general maintenance. I have the screen and tins for it. It will get some new skins front and rear, paint the wheels. Everything works on it. Might do the bearing upgrade for the upper steering shaft and pull the flywheel just to check the magnets and stator. Other than that, I hope to just use it.

I've been a long time member and supporter and yet I've haven't made it to a Big Show😔... yet. I'm planning on a trip from Erie area this year. I have lodging booked/figured out already. I've seen enough pics and read a bunch of posts on what goes on there, but was wondering about some details. I gather that I have to buy a $10 membership to Wheel Horse Collectors to sell some of my parts etc, but is there an admission charge/parking? Is there concession stand or something? Porta potty? I would be pulling a 5x10 open utility trailer and my vehicle. Maybe my 417 and various parts. Do people park and set up? Is it sorta like a flea market? I'm planning on going this year and really looking forward to it! It depends on my work schedule, but it should be ok.

Took the plow blade off the C 6.5 predator swap (I’m an optimist)… and arranged the garage for the wheel horses as it should be - sans Mrs. Sylvan’s car - for the High Holy Tractor Season…

I just drilled mine out with a 5/8" bit. That looks nice, but it can be done with less equipment. Used 1/2" ID 5/8" OD oilite bushings. Mine was knocking when the clutch was pushed in.

I think they may not realize that once upon a time, things were built to last and could actually be repaired. They’ve probably grown accustomed to cheap unfixable consumer junk that can only be tossed once broken - it’s all they may know. I have enormous respect for those members who are teaching the youngsters about repair, maintenance and restoration. Keeping this old stuff going may be the best we have to work with in the foreseeable future if things go askew. Plowed out this heavy snow with the ‘73 no name 8 this morning. Almost 50 years old and still ran like a champ!

Check the front axle pivot and spindles by jacking it up, let the axle swing. Check for excessive play - if so, machining & bushings may be needed - this really tightens up the steering. Check for play in the tie rods - if they are shot, there are vendors that sell adjustable length ones with stud style Heim joints to allow you to dial in correct toe-in. Or make your own as I did. Ditto if you use a plow blade - adding Heim joints to the ends of the angling rod IS the way to go. Bill

@kpinnc It's all about this Manual and the Table of Contents. Section I is about the 3 piece transmissions #5003 & #5010, brake drum is on the mushroom gear. Section II is about the 2 piece, 3 Speeds & the Heavy Duty transmissions...key point...the brake drum is located on the 10/44 tooth Mushroom gear. Section III is about the 6 Speeds. All 6 Speed transmissions were 10 pinion Limited Slip from the factory and...key point...brake drum is on the 11/44 Mushroom gear. Yes, there was a Service Bulletin that was about getting rid of the 10 pinion differential and replacing it with an 8 pinion differential. Now here is the difference... Section IV is about the 4 Speeds...key point...brake drum is on the Cluster Gear Shaft. Section V is about the 8 Speeds...key point...brake drum is on the cluster Gear Shaft. The 8 Speed transmissions can be a 4 pinion differential with 1" axles. (110996) They can be an 8 pinion differential with 1 1/8" axles. (5091) They can also be a 10 pinion Limited Slip differential with 1 1/8" axles. (5073) ALL SECTION V 8 SPEEDS HAVE THE BRAKE DRUM ON THE CLUSTER GEAR SHAFT.

Here on Long Island, New York home heating oil is now well over 5 bucks a gallon. I can’t imagine filling my 1000 gallon tank now. Two weeks ago I got 200 gallons @ 3.85 a gallon. I’ve never been more happy about having a good wood stove.

The show is advertised as Friday thru Sunday, but most vendors and flea marketers set up and do their swapping on Thursday. Friday is parade day and Red Square member picture. Most clear out Saturday afternoon after the Raffle. Looking forward to meet you. Look for a trailer full of 5 gallon buckets.

I have had several machines come in with the wrong plug and it is hard to believe that would make a difference but is has proven so. I use the Champion or Autolite equivalent. These two plugs will fit but are different reach and heat range. Another thing about heat range is the amount of exposed electrode up inside the plug. That will causes the ignition variation. Can look the same on the outside but.....much difference.

...and if not a shrink, definitely the wife says that!
