9 pointsI would not put a Fram filter even on my EX wife's car.... They used to be made here right in RI until they were bought out in the 1980'5 - one of the first companies to leave and go to Mexico for production - they should make vacuum cleaners instead - their filters Su*k!

8 pointsI have read that black engine paint transfers heat better than other colors. My mother always told me that if I am not in the sun, black clothes are cooler because they transfer heat away from your body, but in the sun, white is cooler because it reflects the sun. I never successfully argued with my mother.

6 pointshaving carried this for years in my shirt pocket , https://www.amazon.com/Super-Lube-51010-Oil/dp/B000BXOGHY/ref=asc_df_B000BXOGHY/?t it makes for no excuses to get at a stiff throttle linkage , cable movement points , any rusty linkage areas . used it in control boards , with sticking switches , almost no end to its uses . make it work free and easy , greasy pete

6 pointsGood to know. Never actually put the Fram on. I’ll bring it back to the store and get a Napa filter.
-
6 pointsSame here. It's a secret super power they have. All we can do is endure it.

5 pointsSo used to be really active on the forum many years ago. Life gets busy, etc but a few weeks back I was talking to a former co-worker who around 8 years ago I sold a GT14 to and asked what he ever did with it. Essentially it just sat in the back of his barn collecting dust. I asked if he wanted to sell it back and he said sure. I've wished I had kept the tractor after I sold it so it was pretty cool to see it again. It was pretty dirty when I originally bought it from Kelly Hollister but it was straight and relatively complete and un-molested for its age. I remember it had transmission issues when I got it. The acceleration springs were completely destroyed. If memory serves right, I used a set of springs from a bronco 14 roller I had picked up cheap but when driving it around the other day, it still feels weak in reverse. Going to have to dig in to that. Anyway, the engine fired right up and runs well and as stated it moves forward well and I parked it against a log and the rear tires would spin when trying to go forward so thats all good. My plan is to tune it up and add a front and mid attach-a-matic so I can use the decks from newer tractors and make this my all around yard machine. Its a nice (re)addition to the stable alongside my 953 and 1054A. A few questions for those who know more than me on this machine. it runs ATF, should I do a total flush even if the fluid looks good or can I just top it off? I picked up a FRAM PH16 filter as that cross referenced for the WH one but it seems like everyone uses WIX or NAPA, should I ditch the FRAM filter? Anyone have a nice set of acceleration springs laying around they want to sell? I see wheelhorse parts and more have a set for $32 so thats not bad if thats the route I have to go. Justin

4 pointsThe upper range of a high low is the same gearing as a three or four speed. You'll get two benefits out of changing from a 3-speed to a 6-speed transmission. One is that the axles are a little beefier but quite frankly that has never been proven to make much difference to me. The other is that the 6 speeds have Limited Slip Differential. Low range really won't do anything for you unless you are backing slowly or using implements like a tiller.

4 pointsThanks everyone I finally figured it out The frame on mine does have a notch on both ends. If I had sprayed penetrating oil on the bendix I wouldnt have had to take starter off good learning though

4 pointsI built myself a table. A rather stout table. It's made from a 1 3/4" solid core wood door, covered with FRP, and measures 32" by 72". It has castors, and the center post also has rollers on the bottom of it's foot. I can hang the table on my wall brackets, screw in the support posts, and it at work bench height. When not in use, everything fold up underneath, and it folds down flat against the wall. I also built a wood storage rack. I have been working hard on getting my limited space more organized and useful. The rack is suspended from the ceiling, and is operated by a winch. I had a winch in my garage already, and I could have used it for this, but then I got to thinking about what I could do with a second winch. More on that later.

3 pointsjust picked up a 6 speed for my 857 i’m excited to bolt it up me and @danweikert21 will keep you guys updated

3 pointsThanks for all the birthday wishes. I've had a great day so far. I'm up in the mountains of Garrett County, MD taking the grandsons snow boarding and tubing.
-
3 pointsNothing wrong with ATF if everything else is good. When I had to take mine apart to replace an axle I drained the filter and changed it over to 10 W 30, drove it around a few minutes and ran the lift up and down then changed the filter and oil again to be sure I'd flushed it well. I can't tell the difference but 10 W 30 is les expensive. For $ 32.00 I would do away with the used springs and buy a new set from @wheelhorseman . One more vote for ditch the Fram and go with the NAPA 1410.
-
3 pointsI made some progress on the hitch. I was able to check all the clearances so I could get measurements for the lifting arms.

3 pointsIf it has the aluminum end plates it would be another good reason not to subject it to shock loads.
-
3 pointsThat transmission is either a #5060 or a #5071...depending on the differential end plates. 10 pinion Limited Slip.

3 points2 quarts. Least expensive 80 or 90 weight you can find. Three or four speed capacity is 1.5 quarts but I put two in mine when I refill.
-
3 pointsI've heard the same thing. When I researched it, it was due to something called something like "emmitance" . I guess if black absorbs heat better, it must also give it up better. Grosvater used to paint the steam radiators in the house black... never asked why, but I think I know now.
-
3 pointsI'm not sure why some do not paint the cooling fins. Cast iron will rust so deep that cracks can form due to the depth of pitting. Also, the engines were painted at the factory. None of my Kohlers have heat issues with the head painted with high temp paint. Paint provides a smooth surface as well so debris is less likely to stick on the fins. I typically paint the cooling fins and muffler with gloss stove black. The rest of the engine can use regular paint with no problems. Even in NC heat, I've never had issues with overheating. You are far more likely to overheat due to running the engine at low RPMs than with painted fins. I've also never experienced break through rust with high temp black paint, and I don't use primer on the fins.

3 pointsWe are getting older, but as we do, the years seem like months, months weeks, weeks days, and so on. When I woke this morning, I was happy when I realized that I hadn't missed the Big Show.

3 pointsI burned a bunch of $4 and $4.25 gas today driving back to our primary location. Got to check the property and clear out the PO box. We drove our 2019 Cherokee with a 4 cyl engine. It managed a bit over 29 mpg. Quick calculations told me that our 2015 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi would have burned about $55 more in gas at its usual 20mpg. Also located carb for my C195 and got a check sent out. Should show up soon. The high school robotics team I am mentoring left today for their first competition in Oklahoma. I'll be able to watch them compete on line. For that matter, you folks can watch, too. PM me if you are interested, and I'll send you information.

2 pointsAll solenoids will have two big posts. Some have one small post some two. Hard to tell if you solenoid is original (guessing not.) One small terminal feed power to trigger the solenoid. the second one may be a ground or maybe a bypass of a ballast resister ((some older car types especially Fords), Look closely one small terminal should show a + the other may have no mark or an "I". No mark make sure it is grounded and "I" leave it unconnected....

2 pointsInteresting thing to look at Ifix but yeah a PIA to work on. Some day I have to get on this one and going to be an interesting one to open up the gear box, An Amigo There was another brand that one had to switch pullies for high/low range. I thought is was Panzer?

2 pointsNever mind Bob's birthday, where can I get one of these? Seriously Bob, Happy Birthday, and enjoy the heck out of it! We're not still getting older, are we?

2 pointsShow us! I'm working on an old car been sitting in my garage for 20 years. Hasn't started yet but the amount of sunflower seeds that shot out the tailpipe when I cranked it was pretty comical!
