Trina and her mom spent some time moving wood yesterday while I was at work. Apparently in between loads the mama decided it was a good day to build a miniature snowman. These other pictures are a teaser for something I'll post later today...

After I picked up the kids Alex went straight to the garage. He knew that the starter generator parts showed up before he left for the weekend at his moms. So with the help of my friend kyle the 3 of us tackled new bearings and brushes. We struggled getting the bearing off the end with the brushes but finally did. When Alex reinstalled it he started it up and it’s super quiet just the way it should be. Which is perfect cause now we can hear that one sound that I’m sure we all love. A Kohler k series running like a champ. Tomorrow he’s going to drop the plow Off 1077 (old Smokey) and put it on the commando (Archie). I was hoping we were done with snow for the year but I guess not more coming Friday and he’s home to plow.

A little progress report. The crank shaft is out to the machinist to get turned down to .010" under size on the crank pin. I have just about every thing that will fit in the blast cabinet done. With all these nice clean parts I just had to spray a little paint. The starter/gen was pretty noisy so that got opened up for a rebuild. The bearing on the rear of the gen was stuck on the shaft. I don't have a fancy bearing puller so I cut a 3/4" slot in a chunk of iron and tapped a coupled of holes to make my own puller. The commutator was in pretty good shape so it only required a quick clean up with Scotchbrite. Cleaned the grooves out & polished up the shafts. Rotor ready to go. Put it all back together, hooked up some power & gave a test spin. Test turned out good, time to shoot a little paint. This part is done.

The other side may have been so lacking grease it is far from overfull. it also could have hard dried grease keeping anything from flowing out. This side doesn't look like a terrible thing. Since it has been setting a few years, just a basic disassemble, cleaning and fresh grease might be a good baseline to start from.

We need to all start posting what we didn't get finished today. "Here" or what we planed to do to day and didn't get to and general bull ___ topics. It will fit right in with EB's build and help EB with more page numbers.

My latest MP find. Last summer some old guy with a stiff neck jacknifed a boat trailer and broke my tail light. I was too cheap to pay $150 for a new one, so I taped it up and searched MP for a used one. This week, one showed up 3 mile from home for $20.

So the winch arrived. Nice thick cable, wiring I am not the biggest fan so will probably change out the cables with thicker ones. With insolation they are 0.19" the 4.8 grade hardware will be trown a out and replaced by 8.8 grade at least. The winch is 10cm (3.8") high so that gives me just enough room for hood hinges. I am going to paint the winch in red as well. And I went with 50A connectors, they aren't as bulky, But yet I believe they are going to be able to do most if not all of the temporarily accessories I plan on running. Like lights on a trailer, etc.

Got these super snazzy weights from @Mows4three via a buddy of his. The BBT met him in Portsmouth NH this morning to get them and a garden plow. As you can see they measure 14-3/8" OD. Weight is 55 lbs each. They'll be great on the rear wheels. Likely I'll install Cub 25 lb weights on the 12" front to match these.

Thanks for the compliment! On our craigslist, we can set an alert when new searches come up under a certain name, So every Wheel Horse that comes up, I get a notification and if the price is right, I jump on it. I don't have a girlfriend, I don't smoke nor am I a party animal so all the money I keep on the side goes into the tractors! And how can you say no to a black hood in need of some love? @SylvanLakeWH

This is not a pict from mine, mine is laying on a trailer. But its the same type and it appears in same condition just to show you how it will look finally. I was thinkering a long time arround a own Carlift because of the both fixed posts and the space they need Thinkering to have maybe a flexible Car lift or a fixed one, both have their pros and cons A mobile carlifter i can move arround and ain‘t loose that space, but where to put if unused.... at least 500 kilo for a mobile platform ain‘t be that slim and easy to handle. At the end of the Day the fixed post lifter will be the smallest pain i believe. But the final decision was at least very urgently while i get it for free, completely unexpected for me because i was on the Way to fix it the electrical Side. The owner turned it out with a new one and told me - take it or leave it one week time to pickup. Since there was not any discussion further about the posts or not. but before i will install it or even use it first time, i change all safety related parts, no matter how good they appears. I ain‘t be interested in to catch up to 3 Tons with my head some day. Mounting sets will come next week, than i got all material to bring it back again to an Active status. The spindles are in great shape, the lift nuts and the safety nuts on both sides are in nearly new conditions. They just sat so between 5 or7 years outside, nobody knows exactly. The situation how i got it was confuse enough, because i just told then what i would change. Than they decide to get another one, but they have allready the expensivest Parts organized. - However, i be a thankfully new owner and spent the rest of Money for the few parts are missing. best is the spindles are that thick greased, no rust can attack the spindles itself. But last and not least, service and maybe work on the Wheelhorse can be done in a human friendly height.

Well folks. This oughta be fun. @JCM Jim and I took a trip upta Port Clyde Maine last fall to pick up 4 tractors. Ole Jimbo's been very helpful to me n BBT on several occasions and never considers a return of any kind. 2 of the tractors are 1986 417As. Him being a connoisseur of the vintage a 417A has been a "bucket list" ride for Jim. I mentioned this to Trina and she was already planning to restore one for Jim before I even finished the sentence. Seriously. She and I tossed the idea back n forth for a bit and I brought it up to Jim. We've agreed to split the work amongst the 3 of us with The Paint Department doing her magic, me rebuilding the wiring and mechanical things. Jim's gonna be the local 1986 WH expert and help out with everything. This will be a great learning experience for the BBT on how to do fine smooth paint work. ALL hints and advice are requested and appreciated. Here's how we found them in the garage. Loaded up and running 🎶 Today I took some time to move Jim's tractor into the basement workshop and the parts tractor to the outdoor workshop. And just for a little more fun... Here's that tractor being "assist-primed".

Got tagged from behind at a stop light a few years back by a girl in a small car, she was texting. Reese Hitch made quite an impression on her hood. Hood had moved back a few inches and broke her windshield. She wanted us to pull forward so we could pull off the road at the intersection, told her I wouldn't because the hitch was through the hood and going to pull it off her car. About the time the police got there she backed up and sure enough her hood was still attached to our hitch. The policeman had a sledge hammer in his trunk and used it to get the hood free. Damage to our SUV was minimal, her little car was probably totaled.

I saw a guy at home Depot walk right into his hitch ball. As he getting ready to put wood in the back of his truck. I gotta good laugh out of it. Looked like it hurt.

@WHX?? cut off pants leg ? thats where I screwed up , always just jammed it in my pocket, just trying to keep greasy . pete

That would only make me mad for a little while but I would sure as hell make sure she was held accountable on a police report. Never know if there's multiple claims against her... Cost quite a bit to repaint something in full and do it correctly. Doesn't matter to me if it's a brand spanking new Ferrari or an old junk truck.

Far as I'm concerned that's a police report

Now now... Mustn't be hasty... See Post 1480 for historical perspective... Edit: Added text of Post 1480 for those unable to search that far back into the archives of this thread: ———- “Just some perspective to keep @ebinmaine’s honor in tact… According to multiple innerweb resources it took 12 years to complete the Original Colossus of Rhodes… (on the web so it must be true…) Post 1 of this thread was August 31, 2019. So really, when August 31, 2031 rolls around, we should get nervous… I mean, even with BBT, we can’t expect this beast - what will become the 8th Wonder of the world - to take less time than the original can we…? “ ———-

He bought it that way, There was a carb problem, which could be true as carb are impossible to find for these twins. I will try and get the KT17 back running and put it where she belongs!

I've had three: the first bought years back for $100 with the Onan parts in a cardboard box. It was repowered for a while with a Vanguard twin. Best Eaton transmission I've seen. Picked up a 520-8 that had sat in a field for decades. Paint peeled off, everything rusted, flat rotted tires, no engine. Tranny full of water. Unfortunately a parts machine. Quite the shame... Bought a third two years ago. Engine was great, tranny was serviceable, but on its way out. Used it for a while but the hills at my new property sped up the demise of the tranny. So, now I have a cobbled together 520-H that is a combination of the better parts of the bunch rolled into one. It isn't pretty, but runs well with a strong transmission. It may get a refresh at some point but for now it's a solid worker. It's pictured below in all it's pink glory. And several other tractors have inherited swept axles and other components where needed. It's a shame to cannibalize, but nothing could be done otherwise.

1300 mile round trip, and this statement has changed. Well, I have an Xi machine too from just across the big city…

I try to keep the builds treads, simple, strait forward, but still going into detail. And some nonsense ain't a bad thing, for people following along, it makes it easier to swallow. Anyway, today I got a deal on a C175 8speed. Going to pick it up next week. EDIT: make that tomorrow Oh and the winch arrived for the C141D build

Completely normal. Pump grease in till new grease appears at the top and bottom to flush out the dirt. It is best to jack up the tractor by the frame when greasing so that grease will get into the wear areas. Some models have seals at the wheel bearings and tie rod ends, so care must be taken to not push those seals out. A roll of paper towels is your friend.

Agreed. I like the idea of a check valve. I'll probably try one too. But so far, the primer bulb is great on everything I have with a fuel tank under the fender. Just how much longer my batteries last is reason enough to use one. Both solutions offer the same result: everyone likes a 40-50 year old engine that fires on the first revolution.

If you have a wire feed welder you can use some blind welds to put that back together. Drill 8mm holes through the old spot welds on the inner piece. Clamp the parts together and weld through the holes that you drilled. I use this method quite frequently.

Smart man, whether you have a tractor hobby or not. I've always thought my tractor hobby was better than many hobbies. Can it get expensive? Sure, but I can choose how much time and money i place against it. The same can't be said for golf or even fishing these days. Club dues, gotta buy and maintain a boat... Many more examples, but if I need to slow down on tractor spending, they will still be in the barn when I come back!
