First post here. Had to join just to give a big thank you to everyone on this forum that answers questions so well. Bought a 1993 314-h with all the attachments. Was running smoothly for 6 months, then started draining the battery. Eventually I started disconnecting the neg terminal when I put it away. Then it wouldn't start. Smoke coming from the wires ... Turn the key... nothing. I started researching and found this site. WOW! Tons of info, ideas and diagrams. Long story short, the ignition switch had rusted/shorted and melted a pin off. The starter solenoid was bad, fuel filter was clogged and the fuse connectors were corroded horribly. I got new parts based on wire diagrams and the manual I got from here, replaced it all by following advice from here, and adjusted the carb from instructions on here. It runs smoothly now, and all credit to the people on this forum! THANK YOU!

I haven't been seeing ads for hemorroid creme so sitting here on this ice pack must not have gotten to the airwaves. I'm kinda offline anyway - data phone is the company's. In Wheel Horse news, the lousy COVID has finally moved on so I hit the garage in 90% humidity and got the transport system just about attached. Only need to get that running assembly stripped and painted and she's finally ready for testing - and to be put away for the season. I do like that Sunrise Red...

I understand both sides of the discussion on this thread. I love repowering these tractors as well. It is a challenge, and has great rewards when you make them work. I also understand the desire to preserve these tractors as they were originally built, as there will never be any of them except what we have now, and more dissapear every day. I personally think it more important to find the best way that works for you to continue enjoying these tractors. If that is meticulous restoration to the tiniest of details, that is great. If it is to keep them doing what they were built for as long as possible by any means, that works too. Try as I might, not one tractor I have is all original. I don't even have one that was restored to original specs. Some have come close, but none were perfect. I simply do not have access to such machines here. But I can put my own twist on them and possibly even make the rare improvement. They do after all belong to me, so I will enjoy them the way I want to. I think that is the best part of having them.

I recently bought a bunch of metal at an estate sale but my metal rack did not have enough tubes to organize it so I added some tubes and some uprights at the bottom for small sheet goods. Metal loaded onto rack.

Someone made a comment on one of my threads and it made me realize I never quite introduced myself on here. So my name is Ben I also go by BDM garage on YouTube and Ben’s vintage tractors everywhere else. If your in new England chances are you have seen some of my posts on marketplace and or Craigslist as I buy and sell wheel horse and other vintage garden tractors and parts and pieces. I’ve currently got about 55 tractors 20 of which are my personal collection and the rest are inventory. I’m a huge fan of repower and custom machines but I also love a good all original machine too. I’m big into pulling tractors and off-road racing tractors. I’ll attach a few pictures of some of my favorite machines I own.

So I picked up a new project today. I know almost nothing about this tractor, except that it is small, and red. Most of the ID tags are painted over, faded, damaged, or otherwise illegible. I have figured out it is a Speedex S-17, with optional electric start, and apparently a 2-speed transmission, and a plow. My boy likes tractors, likes to play with tractors, and has been asking me to teach him to paint, and he wants to drop a blade with me when the snow hits. He also is a few years yet from really growing into the 800 Special that he has claimed as his own, so when I saw this sitting along the road for $100, I figured I couldn't go too wrong. It's a mess now, but we are going to restore it together.

Now, if you two can hold the camper up a little longer, I'll slide this axle out, grease the bearings and slide it back in a jiffy.

We use the pink RV/marine antifreeze where I work to winterize some potable water military systems we build. We don’t use a lot, but enough that we usually buy it a drum or two at a time. I called one of the manufacturers who makes this stuff the other day to get a barrel sent to us…no luck. As it turns out, there is a market shortage of propylene glycol which is the primary constituent of this stuff. He said they usually buy “millions of gallons” of it for their manufacturing but have been placed on an allotment of only a few thousand gallons a month. Anyway, he said that basically what is out on store shelves is all there is this season. if you need a gallon or two to winterize your RV, don’t wait. Don’t hoard it either, of course as that would be selfish and stupid…you only need what you need and then only in the winter. I bought enough at Menards to get us through November and they had a ton of it, but there’s a chance restocking won’t be quick this season. Taking us through spring is our purchasing agent’s problem now. Steve

Buying a replacement kit takes all the fun out of repower. I checked Small Engine Warehouse back when I repowered my C-120. They listed that they didn't have a replacement for it. I put a 16 HP Vanguard in there. Then later a !8 HP Vanguard. there is no extra room it takes it all. My advice is to buy and engine complete with key switch in the engine and a 1 1/8" PTO shaft. I didn't get the 1 1/8" shaft as I had already solved the problem on the 16 Vanguard. The Vanguard are smaller then Kohler or Honda I checked all the dimensions before buying the Vanguard. The 27 Vanguard is a big block engine compared to the 18 and 23 Don't know how that will fit on a 520.

It is more of an issue of directional force applied to the engine crankshaft than how well an attachment functions. The manual PTO pushes towards the flywheel of the engine to engage the attachment which can observed when you push the PTO lever forward. This requires the usage of bearings (ball bearing and thrust bearings) that can handle the longitudinal load which many Kohler Command engines do not have but all K-Series and Magnum single cylinder engines do. An electric clutch doesn't apply that type of load to the crankshaft/bearings which allows plain bearings to be used; it applies loads to the crankshaft just like the transmission clutch does, aka 90 degrees from the shaft. Unless that engine came from a Wheel Horse or an application that requires longitudinal loads, it may not last long. We just don't want anyone here to ruin a good engine from it being used in the incorrect application.

Ok so the worst thing about restoration of a tractor has to be painting rims! Been a bit but made a little progress tonight. Sneak peak at the new skins!

This combo caught my interest on my way home tonight. It intrigued me so much that I had to stop & take a picture of it. One sweet example of a mid 60's Chevy van and the painted to match Scamp camper is certainly icing on the cake.

Been doing a lot of litter picking lately, keeping the area tidy. I broke a pair of litter tongs so decided to have a bash at making one. Its turned into a bit of an epic build to be honest. The next step will be hydraulic power lol.

@ebinmaine: Did you catch the dryer lint story I told along those lines at the M&G? I saw a sign “DRYER VENT CLEANING” not too far up the road from there Sunday. Maybe it’s a hint!

Maybe weak. It's tuff to hand crank it and see what I have for spark exactly. It looked good thru an inline tester. The impulse you mentioned if that's the click I hear, that seems to work fine to me, but not 100% sure. I just bought 2 new plugs and will check again later when I get home. I went on a search locally for another mag but haven't found one yet. I'm not giving up yet , I guess

I agree I’d never buy a kid to repower a tractor. I have repowered well over 100 machines in the decade I’ve been collecting. I love repowering and making tractors custom and 1 of a kind. Also love the look of the vanny in that c120!

I think it's a '65 My guess would be the 194 c.i. straight six. I believe there was also a 4 cylinder available IIRC but that might have been earlier. There was also a 230 c.i. option. I had a '66 for a while, back in the day. 3 speed on the column.

Yes but the cost of the parts would be more than what I paid for the Honda. If someone wants to give me the money to fix the onan or even buy the whole tractor I’d be fine with that but since nobody will do that I’m just gonna engine swap it. I don’t really care about the rarity I just want to use it as a worker. Plus there are many more better examples of 520-8s out there.

I removed the gas tank from the engine and used the one supplied with the tractor. Removed the air cleaner and replaced it with a smaller set up. Also removed the muffler and made my own pipe. All of this was done to avoid cutting any sheet metal on the tractor. The bolt pattern to mount the predator to the frame should be a direct fit. Other alteration may be the belt guard, the belt guard will be needed in to stop the belt while the clutch is pushed in. A pic of my Suburban 400 "Rat Rod" with a Predator engine.
