Just spoke to Howard. He sounds great, says he feels great. All went well. Can only lay around for a few weeks while muscle heals around kidney. He'll be back... Few words about the donor. He called Howard about hub caps he listed on Facebook. Found out they lived close so he stopped by to pick them up. When he learned about Howard's situation he offered to donate. Let that sink in... The day two great guys met....

Had a wheel horse given to me it was sitting for about 10 years in a shed need to know what year and model it is and what fluid goes in the transmission looks to be in good shape the numbers I found are 17241 618706 and it has wheel horse wrote on the tires

I am working on a pair of 701 cast foot rests. These were pretty rusty. Placed them in a container with Evaporust, used wire wheel and Dremel on the 3/4 foot rods and placed K &W Knock’er Loose Penetrate (Napa) on rods and set screws. Used my impact drill to remove one of the set crews and lock nuts - it came right out. One saved. I am going to have to have my welder together weld the lock nut on the other foot rest to get the remains of the set screw out. The foot rod remains should be able to come out after using my K & W.

I think his nipple is already ovaled! Slice the nipple from the inside with a sawzall. Simple and quick. Collapse the nipple and it comes right out.

Those two trucks , Walters on the left, International on the right, were built to specifically for V plow. The front wing tower is mounted and tilted more rearward for clearance for the big V plows.

Wow.... you mean to tell us a guy Howard didn't know came came to buy some hubcaps and he ended up with one of his kidneys!?!?!? ....let that sink in is right!!!!! I agree with the above comments. HP is not a problem for towing. Traction for pulling and stopping is the limiting factor. Every WH I have owned (8-20 HP) will spin the wheels under a dead pull. I think 10 HP would be fine for tilling as 100% of the 10HP would be used by the tiller. The tiller actually moves the tractor forward. Mowing with a 42"er in heavy long grass would be taxing a 10 HP. It would work, but You would probably need to mow in a very low gear that may not be acceptable.

The fruit tree blossoms were all lost in the late frost, but the blackberries and veggies are doing well in the heat. I just have to do some watering.

Nothing wrong with that! I understand completely. I could probably sell my tractors and pay cash for a second zero turn, and I have sold some over the years. That being said, I just can't let some of them go. They are too capable and easy to work on. I have wanted ONE since I was a kid. I guess I went overboard...

The Charger has a Sundstrand that would have exited the factory with Dexron Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). At some point that may have been changed over to 10 W 30motor oil. Remove the dipstick from the transmission and use a white paper towel to see what color the fluid is. If it is pink you have ATF and if it is amber it is 10 W 30. If it is ATF buy some Valvoline Mercon which is a direct replacement for Dexron.. @adsm08 If it helps, my son lives a few mile North of Dover just off rt 74. If you decide to get them repaired and could deliver to Dover, I could transport from there to the repair shop in Springvale.

Update on Howard....from Kevin Howard was doing great his BP, blood levels, and diabetic numbers were stable and great yesterday. But sometime between last night and today, Howard’s blood levels came back and the doctors did not like what they saw so they did some more testing and come to find out there is some internal bleeding going on. The doctors stated that it can stop all on its own or if the bleeding continues they will have to go back in and stop the bleeding. Howard and his family are asking for prayers and thoughts that the internal bleeding will stop on its own and that he will not require another surgery to fix this. Kevin appreciates all of your thoughts and prayers and wants you all to know how much this wheel horse family means to him and his family! Lowell and I know who the donor is and we have been asked by Howard’s family and the donor’s family not to release that information as they want to keep the donor’s name and identity anonymous. Just know that the donor is a caring, compassionate and selfless individual who loves to help his fellow man and this world needs more of these people!

I was able to pick up a complete and really nice 855 at a sale. I’ve never really been able to get used to my charger 12 as a snowplow tractor so I thought I would use this with my small snow plow. Everything is there and everything works and it’s the smoothest, quietest K Kohler I’ve ever had. As soon as I switch a few things from the charger to this tractor i’ll probably sell the charger and the mower deck from this tractor. I think it’s really going to clean up nicely. The Charger 12

Yeah, that's reasonable advice. In general, I want to minimize the number of engines I need to maintain. The wheel horse does it all, and that's what I like, even if it's sub-optimal in some use-cases. Since my primary is out of commission, I need a 2ndary that can do the same. Also, during the last 35 years, I've only ever mowed with a wheel horse. So, I'll admit I'm influenced to some degree by sentimentality rather than pure pragmatism

Galvanized would not be suggested for an exhaust application. I know many have used it, (myself included ) but galvanized metal emits a poisonous gas when it is heated. For this reason it should not be used for exhaust pipe.

This is the ABSOLUTLY THE best/quickest/easiest etc etc I take one of the angle grinder with a cut off wheel and slice the nipple leaving about 1/4" inch and using a jig/sabre/sawzall saw carefully slice the nipple just touching the threads (I do this in 2 places 180°) With a punch hit the 1/4" 'stick out' and itll collapse - some times it'll just fall out!

Wheel Horse tractors were not designed to have stack mufflers. I personally would not have one due to low hanging branches. But if you insist on having one, make a bracket to hold it upright and to support the weight. The cast iron exhaust outlet on Kohler engines is not designed for stacks without some sort of brace. Just my for the day.

I believe that all the linkage has to be in place before the roll pin is installed. PITA I know. Start your roll pin in the pivot arm, get your linkages on and slide the arm on to the shaft. Use a small drill bit or punch from the side opposite of where you started the roll pin and get the roll pin hole lined up. Should be able to drive the pin in at that point.

I have to agree. I bought 3.5 acres, and my WH machines all got a workout. They happily trudged through it, but took entirely too long to do the job. When I bought a zero turn, it mowed in less than 1/3 of the time. I'm not hating on our beloved tractors. They are all around exceptional machines that can do many jobs well. Unfortunately, if I had much over an acre or so to mow I wouldn't buy any garden tractor to do it. The only reason a zero turn is better for mowing is because it is optimized for that one job and not much else. My tractors "back up" my zero turn, but otherwise now stick to other duties. If you have no other choice- and are using the tractor primarily to mow with, a hydro is the best choice. More HP is always a plus when mowing as well, as you can mow at much higher speed while maintaining quality of cut.

agree with above comments for 2.5 acres of cutting - 12hp is on the low end and 10 will be a tad lower - larger twin is better suited ... but can get the job done with 10 I cut around 2.5 - 3 acres ... much better and faster with 416-H compared to 312-8 ... 30-60 minutes faster ... ? .. (toward 60 when I need to make multiple passes with 312) ... and use the same amount of fuel - one complete tank (if I'm efficient - sometimes will run out at end ; need to refuel 312 if made multiple passes)

Great question that I have asked myself for years. Having owned a 312-8 with a 42'' SD deck for 32 years since new and recently refurbed a 310-8 of the same vintage with the same size deck I can honestly say I see no difference in the two for mowing. Yes a twin Kohler would be my choice with your acreage to mow especially if it is tall on a consistent basis. That being said towing a trailer should not matter. I also have a tiller that I picked up 8 years ago but have not yet tried it out but I doubt you would have any issues with an 8 speed transmission.

If grass is high a 10hp may labor some with a 42" deck. Don't think you'll notice much difference with the trailer. If you want a tiller and the price is right I'd probably go for it...
