12 pointsOur local engine and tractor club held our last show this past weekend. Over the past three years the support from the community has decreased and we had just enough money left for one final show. Attendance was down but those who attended enjoyed a great weekend. This little guy on a Suburban made a couple trips around the fair grounds under the watchful eye of his dad. Fred Flintstone showed up too! Front end and grill from a Massey Harris Pony, S-10 running gear and everything else is made or wood, even the frame. Better call Terminix. Here are a few others from the show.

11 pointsTugged a heavy load into the back barn today. 8 horse powers was all I needed... and a little extra grip might have helped!

9 pointsSo if anyone's been following me you know a pulled a couple of tractors out of the weeds where they have been sitting for decades. It's not 100% finished yet but close. It runs and drives great. A lot of new parts and a little bit of paint and a lot of elbow grease. Looking for a seat for it. Need to detail the frame and axel some more. Let me know what you think.

5 pointsThis morning was measure everything day to see what if anything needed to be done to the block and crank. First the bore: Stock bore dia. is 2.938" with a wear limit of 2.941" I set my micrometer to 2.938" Next I zero my bore gauge using the micrometer so at 2.938" the dial will read 0. This isn't easy to do and taking a pic is even harder Next step in inserting the gauge into the bore at the lower unworn area to confirm the bore is the stock size. The gauge should read 0 (again hard to hold the gauge steady and take a pic but it does measure 0) Now to measure taper the max taper allowed is .003" Each line on the gauge is .0005" You measure the taper 90 deg from the crankshaft which are the thrust sides of the bore. I have 1 line so .0005" of taper so it is in spec. Not to measure out of round. I re-0 the gauge where I measured the taper. Then rotate the gauge 90 degrees. The gauge stayed at 0 indicating I have no out of round. Bore is good so the block needs no machine work besides the valve job. On to the piston: Piston is new It measures 2.9310" across the thrust face. Piston thrust face to bore clearance is.007-.010. I have 2.938" minus 2.931" = .007" so it's in spec. Now the crankshaft. Stock crankshaft measures 1.1811" I measure 1.1870= .0059" difference. I'm chalking that up to an old micrometer and my not so steady hands. I measure no out of round on the crank either. I''m going to check the rod clearance with plastigage Lay a strip of the plasitgage across the journal. Install rod and torque to 200 inch lbs. (17 ft. lbs.) Remove rod and measure how much the plastigage has crushed. Spec is .001-.002. I'm just about dab smack in the middle at .0015" Looks like I'm all set with the block and rotating assembly. This block will go to the machine shop for a valve job. Next step is tearing down the parts motor to see if I can use the cam and governor parts out of that.

5 pointsHoward… I was born with just one “working” kidney. Did not find this out until a a high school football injury. Kidneys are valuable!! I know you will be just fine. Get better and get back to life as you know it. Prayers for you and the donors family.

5 pointsDrilled a hole to run the battery cables on the 1257 through, reused a rubber ring off the Toro 117 that alone made the purchase worth it .

5 pointsI started out planning to mow the right o way around the farm and some woods trails. I got about a 1/4 mile from the house and the deck drive belt came off. I loosened the mule drive andreached under to put the belt back on the center pulley and it was gone. I found the pulley in the grass to the left of the tractor. Lucky it didn't go the other way into the beans. The spindle had dropped downnand the blade was dragging, so I had to find some ramps to get it high enough to get the spindle out for the ride home. When I took the deck off, the bolt and washers were still laying on top of the deck. While I had the deck off, I removed the other two spindles and greased the bearings. These do not have zerks. Back to mowing after the 2 hour delay.

4 pointsAdd a permanent bathroom (as much as a Johnny seat on a bucket and a shower curtain wall) and a permanent bed, it can be titled as a motor home.

4 pointsRe-laid a patch of block paving this morning. It had settled a bit since I had to disturb it a few years ago to fix a drain. This afternoon took a ride down the very overgrown bridleway. Sears in low second and shears in hand, to deal with the shoulder high nettles and brambles that the Sears didn't flatten.

4 pointsTook the pan off the parts motor and it's in really good shape. It has the 1 piece cam! But the governor arm is broke on this one to. Think I'm going to try to find the parts needed and keep this motor intact. I think with a couple of odds and ends I can make a serviceable long block out of it. Found this in the pan. 1 piece cam: This is what I need. Governor shaft X 2!

4 pointsDoesn't us AL .... many a Kohler that sat for years has started right up for us. My 753 sat for at least 6 years but fired right up with minor love. Buddy Dan's @Achto 753 prolly sat for 10 years or better and we had her singing inside of an hour... topless and all! May be I so bold as to suggest a quick carb cleaning, fuel lines & filter. Also go easy on the sniffing salts, they can wash cylinder walls of oil. Switch to choke cleaner if she is stubborn.

3 pointsI picked this up yesterday from a R/S member. It was stored in a garage since 1990 till this year. Family had to clean out the estate. So I got lucky on this. A short video of what it looks like. You will see the bolts are all original. Will post pick about the seat. It needs some lite TLC and a good cleaning. This will be a summer tractor only. I hope you enjoy the Vid. 7-14_2021_post_copy.MP4

3 pointsA quality set of points should last a lifetime if they are coupled to a good quality condenser. Though it has no moving parts the condenser does the hard work of saving your points from being damaged.
-
3 pointsI do love those tecs. The 516 has its deck again, cleaned and sharpened. The central arbor can use new bearings - a little rough. It can wait the season, though. She mowed the deep stuff wonderfully and the throttle stayed locked at 3500. Can't say enough good things about these old machines. They take some lovin' but it is always worth it.
-
3 pointsLooks like you are on the right track. Get a pack of fine grit sandpaper up to 3000 grit. Work your way up to 3000 by wet sanding 400, 600, 800, 1000, etc. As long as the paint is thick enough, you will end up with a pretty good finish. Then rub it out with compound and polish. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DTGP1QT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

3 pointsWell since I have the flywheel off of the 500 Special to get new coil, points, and condenser. I thought I would do some more painting. The engine was not original and had nice paint on it but it was gray. Not anymore. I'm not going to paint the whole engine as the blower housing covers most of it. I will be painting the wheels when they come back from getting new tires mounted. I wanted to paint the wheels beforehand but didn't have time.

2 pointsTransmission filled with 80w-140. Shift lever in. Drive and brake drum on transmission. We rolled it outside so The Paint Department could do a quick overall spray to cover the tractor as a whole. Painted over the nuts and bolts, areas where things were touched or scratched during assembly, etc. She put the tie rods on but they need adjustment or replacing. It's towed OUT something fierce. I'll pick up some 3/8 fine rod and get some together. Added the seat pan and seat...

2 pointsEasily my favorite snake. Black Rat snakes grow to be very good size and with gentle handling are very docile. Problem is everyone mistakes their little ones for copperheads as their coloring can be similar.

2 pointsFirst things first. Before you buy anything you need to find out what has happened. Disconnect and cap the fuel line, remove the choke and throttle cables and unhook all wires going to the engine. Now remove the four bolts that attach the block to the oil pan and take a close look. You can remove the two bolts that retain the connecting rod (if they aren't already broken) and remove the cylinder head. Now you can take a closer look at the crankshaft and cylinder. DON"T BUY ANYTHING until you KNOW what you need!
-
2 pointsAbsolutely agreed! I would even go so far as to say that shop time is part of the fun.

2 pointsUPDATE ON HOWARD.... I received a message from Kevin, Howard's son early this morning. Howard's surgery was cancelled. The doctors ran more tests this morning and found out that Howard has a touch of bronchitis. Howard was given an antibiotic for his bronchitis. He is on an antibiotic and was sent home. The medical team has rescheduled his surgery for August 2, 2021. I called and spoke to Howard himself and he is in great spirits and informed me that he is glad that they are postphoning the surgery until his touch of bronchitis clears up. Howard has not started dialysis and will not start dialysis because of the wonderful individual that stepped forward to donate one of their kidneys, so Howard has a chance to continue living a normal life. Please continue to light up this forum for Howard, Howard's family, for the Donor, and the Donor's family. Howard's son will let the donor and their family know of the love and prayers that are being sent to them by all of us. God's love is unending and he is amazing.
