I changed a spark plug, then took a morning stroll today...

Me an' the ol' Cinnamon Horse C160 had some fun movin' heavy stuff around. Went out to the forest and got a good load of fire 🔥 wood🪓. When me n' horsie got back the old ball n chain was pulling in the yard with another "Honda Fit load" of cee-ment blocks for the patio project. For anyone needing a Bear and BBT status update... Here's the running "herd" as it stands. Near to far on the right: Cinnamon Horse C160. Trina's Pigpen 867. My 1970 Charger hydro. Off to the left is Trina's Pony 657. Future projects in order: Trina's Military Tribute tractor. Colossus big boy tractor. 1968 Raider 10. 1974 C160 with Tecumseh engine. Couple days ago I started building a wicked rugged trailer hitch for whatever horse it lands on. I'll likely build 2 or more similar hitches for Cinnamon Horse and the Charger hydro etc..... Put the 312 to work again on the baseball field. Clover/grass mix was very thick and wet. We've had like 2 weeks of rain here and this hasn't been cut since last time I did 3-4 weeks ago. It was a great test for the 12hp kohler and 42" deck and I was pleasantly surprised. I had the height of cut at 2nd lowest setting and did high range 2 gear the whole time and she never missed a beat! Very impressed! Before during...had to stop a couple times to get baseballs that were left by the previous team. Too thick and high to see them. I'm glad I did though before hitting one all done

I got it running! I drove it 4 feet! There’s a noise when I press the clutch in, but I’ll figure that out tomorrow.

Hey guys- It's been difficult to keep up with what shows are happening and which have canceled for this year. I did get a notification about the Wheel Horse show on Facebook messenger but I don't check it often enough to stay on top of it. Emailing show information is the best way so that it gets filed correctly into the publishing folders. At any rate, I will post it to the magazine's Facebook page immediately and I apologize that it wasn't in the Road Trips section of L&GT. As far as content goes, our dedicated writer, Matt Castagno, has done an excellent job with stories and photos for L&GT in the past. For him as well as for us, getting stories last year with the shows canceled due to COVID was challenging. During that time we relied on our subscribers to send in articles and photos about their tractors and collections. We welcome articles and stories and if it is short and sweet, that is way okay! In the past, I've had to pass on some stories due to the fact that the photos and scans were low resolution, but this year I have discovered a way to boost the quality of photos and scans. The printing company we use demands high resolution photos, otherwise the pictures are "fuzzy" and appear pixelated. Lawn & Garden Tractor Magazine is YOUR magazine. It is about you, the collector. We want to promote your shows and your collections, and we need your help in order for that to happen. We are a small, family owned and operated business. We work day jobs just like you, we are raising families and taking care of elderly parents and trying to squeeze the most out of every day. We too are struggling like many other publications and small businesses but we continue because we need a publication for this hobby that brings the collectors together. If the magazine is not your cup of tea, I get that and there's no hard feelings. If you do subscribe, we appreciate it more than you know. The bottom line is that we want to promote a fun and enriching hobby for all. I hope this explanation helps a little bit. I was out yesterday due to a death in the family so I did not hop on to respond. Brandon talked with me about this thread and it bothered me all night. Yes, the Wheel Horse show is my favorite show. The people are just top notch and the event takes a lot of time and effort, and they really roll out the red carpet for their guests. I wish I could be there every year! But Brandon works full time, and my husband works full time and that leaves me to travel alone, 12+ hours to the show and that is a lot for just me. Enjoy the show! took half another day... these snapshots of my video recording show the excitement of the fruit of my labor. I can’t tell how many pulls I yanked on that rope in 30 hours, but it was a lot!

I’ve got spark, I’ve got fuel, I’ve got a tiny puff out the muffler. It must be a points gap thing. I’ll play with the points some more and hear it run soon! But not tonight.

I think it would be great if Cecil could see one more testament to his work- from all those years ago. As simple as the design is, it still says quite a bit about what the Ponds built, and just how much quality was built into these machines! You certainly will not find a smart phone or likely even automobile that will so easily spring back to life 70 years from now!

Here it is... @oldiron613 Rob I might need some help identifying anything I don’t point out... but the bellhousing and clutch are not lever steer normal, I don’t think many frames were bent either. I was told most of the lever steer tie rods were just a flat bar with bolts/pins, so maybe with all the added touches, this might be the last lever steer built in 1947? The engine has been swapped, so the build date is challenging to pin down... but it is what it is and it’s home for good! Once again, many thanks to @Bow_Extreme for the lead on the Senior in the first place, then passing “dibs” on to me on this one! 1947, Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers. I’m not much a fan of baseball, but I’m a fan of his story. I’m thinking I’ll call this one “Jackie”

I was cleaning out the work trailer after the kitchen installers filled it up. Found these in the onion bin that was painted shut. They are all about the same age

Just installed my new hitch on my 876 I got off eBay I had to remove the slot hitch but the pin was easy no tools required except snap ring pliers because of rebuilding the differential recently Now I can swap balls easily May take longer to get there but I can save gas on long trips Watch out for the stops though

Trying to make the bracket that go from the hood stand to the plastic dash on a 701 a picture of it and the measurements of the bracket any help on this thanks it been a three year project it was in bad shape and missing parts when i bought it but I'm almost done with it still looking for parts for the motor but it runs for right now this has been the heards one to find parts for pard to my other wheel horse tractor i have thanks for the help y'all have help me on this 701 wheel horse so far i can see the light at the end of the tanal on this project

Nothing exciting happening with my horses today. I just took the 1075 out for a short drive. Glad I picked this one up. Still looking for an engine for its little brother.... the 875.

Yes sir- 2:54, 10:07, 10:48. Studabaker didnt get me going through the ditch, which was/is my favorite type of riding. Super technical, low speed crawling is a blast and a lot safer and cleaner. I do have a couple other vids on file, but pretty sure the ice can't get much thinner here for me.

Thanks! Yes, it’s old Ford Model A / V8 stuff. These lever steers were the first 50 tractors that Cecil and Elmer Pond built as independent business men. The Pond tractor legacy is what we all know as Wheel Horse today.

I enjoy the tree felling. The sectioning up. (Chainsaw work). Moving the splitter from one tree felled area to the next. Trina and her Mom do all the splitting and stacking. Pulling the loaded trailer up out the forest. Now I've got the Mackissic chipper I'm finding that to be quite entertaining as well. Something very nice about turning a 5 foot tall pile o brush to a 1 foot tall area of chips.

Unloaded my new toy this afternoon. A little more than 200 miles round trip and over state lines.

I'm happy to help and I hope to make to to the big show in 2022. Matt Nace has been working on restoring a Wheel Horse 500 Special for me and I want to bring it back home again to Indiana.

The 520H is a good tractor. I personally like the Onan engines, even though some will say stay away from them. Make sure you listen for any valve train noise like a tic tic sound. I bought one that was running and still ran good. It had a tic sound and after I got it, I found out it was a loose valve seat. That tractor had 1300 hours on it and it was not really well cared for. So, I fixed it with another block that I found that was like new. So, you need to watch out for things like that, but overall, they are good. If you get it, make sure to blow out the cooling fins on the motor after each mowing with compressed air and when grass begins to collect on the flywheel screen when you are mowing, be sure to brush it off. If you maintain these engines and keep them cool, they will run a long time. Another thing that I have done to all of my Onans, (four now) is slot the belt guard on the rear cylinder to help with cooling and air flow. You will also want to make sure the grommet is around the oil filter for optimum cooling. It may not hurt to do a compression check of the engine if the seller is okay with it. I purchased a used Onan engine once that I heard run and it ran great. When I was ready to do the transplant onto another Wheel Horse, I did a compression check to see the condition of the motor before I put it on. Guess what? It was only running on one cylinder because it had a broken rod. The pieces were all laying in the oil pan and it ran great with no vibration or knocking. I was fooled. So, there are many things that can happen. The working hour meter on this tractor was showing 900 hours. I am not telling you this because I want to scare you away, just telling you what happened to me. Compression on my good running Onans is around 120 psi on each cylinder. I do have one with unknown hours that is down to about 90 psi on each bank and it still runs good. As far as the tractor goes, the 520 is rock solid and tough. I use mine year around (one 520H, one 520HC, one 416-8, and one D-160) with mower decks, snow blades, snow blowers, tillers, and front end loaders. The newest 520 I have is 30 years old and it never misses a beat. The parts support is through Toro and most things are still available. However, there are many parts suppliers here Wheelhorsepartsandmore.com and Onanparts.com that carry many things you may need. It it were me, and I were in the market for another garden tractor, I would buy another 520H or HC. Good luck on your decision. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I killed my 16 Vanguard because I broke the corner engine mount off. I was mowing next to a fence and fell off a bank around 4 ft. high. I had it welded back on but they did get all the cracks, it always seeped oil. I ran it another 12 years it opened up a crack and dumped the oil. I put a 18 Vanguard on it in 2010 only trouble I have had was the rectifier went out, had the same problem with the 16. I took the replacement off the 16 and put it on the 18. The torque on the 18 is 29 ft. # and the torque on my 20 Onan is 31.4 ft. # I think the only difference is that heavy cast iron flywheel on the Onan. The Vanguard need to be raised 7/8" to match a single cylinder Kohler. I raised the 18 with a 3/8" plate and to 1/2 bars. There is no chance of twisting that 3/8" plate. I would have used a thicker plate but I had the 3/8".

Pictures! As requested ... Used the tiller and the belly blade to remove a lawn of weeds this weekend, and then laid sod.

The V-twins sound great! but less torquey then the opposed.They are the number one choice for mower racers. and often get build. Also often used on mud-boats So I think they are pretty good. Have been looking for a horizontal shaft but no luck. I can find a vertical shaft for $600 used.

Time to build about 745 more boxes. Apparently you live in the high demand bird real estate market! Downy woodpecker stopped by yesterday.

A visit to a great little garden centre we know this morning, resulted in this. The plants in the pipe are the type that you put in hanging baskets that hand down.. Eventually the tyres will have similar to cover them. This afternoon neighbour across the green brought her walk behind mower over. She'd managed to knock the front axle off. Only held on by two springs. Took me two hours to work out where they fitted and how things went back together. That'll be a bag of doughnuts coming my way.
