8 pointsWe just finished up a special order for a customer with a D-series that was in desperate need of a PTO clutch assembly, I think it turned out pretty good.
-
8 pointsA buddy gave me this. The electric clutch wiring had been caught on something and ripped off, but the two red wires were enough for him to not know what to do. The horizontal Kohler Command 16 for free is worth the price of admission!

8 pointsI think it is safe to say we all like variety. No one here wants to see the same tractor over and over again. We like to see how others not only restore and modify, but how they use their machines. There are many degrees of both, modifications and uses. This site helps us to share all of it. The customs, the bone stock originals, the pullers, off roaders and in my case the just cruise it up and down the street because I have no other use for one. I dont live near woods or on a farm, I am not the best mechanic, but I do love coming on here to learn and to live vicariously through others adventures. Maybe someday I will plow a piece of land, maybe someday I will do some " off roading" heck, maybe someday I will actually even mow my yard with one. When that day comes I will have a better understanding as to what and how to do it. Thanks to everyone who shares their adventures to all of us here. I think we all just want everyone to be safe when they are doing it... what ever " it" is.

7 pointsYour right it wasn't the beet juice lol it was some yellow bio degrading stuff hey it was free with purchase of tractor so. I know from older tractors I ran that didn't have tires filled to having to go fill the tires I was taking a free fill ha. The foam does give a tad bit them tractor mowers we have have a ton of weight for when the booms are out all the way they don't flip non foam filled would burst. After 15 years of running the front right tire finally gave out was running on just the foam but they were like airplane landing gear tires lol here's a photo I found few years ago sure they are on this forum found it pretty sweet with steel wheels

7 pointsSitting in a field rotting away and/or going to the scrap yard has ruined 10,000 times more nice Horses than pullers and offroaders combined could ever do. Early in this addiction I would sometimes buy a Horse that was half missing, blown up, rotted out, etc... but could not bring myself to part them out, thinking 'thats one more Wheel Horse gone forever'. Then one day I realized that parting out that one Horse is giving new life to 5 or 6 others. If these things weren't built so dang tough and sexy as they are, folks wouldn't waste the time fixing them up, restoring them, modifying them, using them as intended......or sometimes not as intended. To each his own, right? I love em all. We all do.

7 pointsSpent some time over the weekend powder coating deck parts, thought I would coat the spindles to see if I can stop the corrosion. I have a feeling I'm going to end up making spindles out of steel instead of paying $75 for new ones or half that for more corroded ones. Had to lay out the parts to see what I'm missing, looks to be one lock washer and the "Special washers" that go above the blade. Ordered a new set of plastic washers/bushings to go under the spring tensioner. Trying to decide if I should do a full restore on the deck or wait until winter.

6 pointsI finished my 701 about a month ago. I decided to go with 6-12 Firestone Regency's on the rear of my tractor and 4.80-8 Firestone Turf Guides on the front. I choose the Turf Guides for the front because they were close to the original tread pattern. Here is a pic of my recently restored 701. A link to M.E. Millers selection of garden tractor tires. https://www.millertire.com/categories/lawn-garden-tires/ Many of us run DeeStone tri ribs on the front. Yes they are imported but lets face it, a US name on the side does not mean that they were made here. The DeeStones look good and are reasonably priced. Available at many different vendor's Amazon, Ebay, etc. A pic of my 1076 with DeeStones on the front. Carlisle 6-12 ags are excellent as well. The bar treads are at a different angle than the FireStones. A pic of my McLean with Carlisle 6-12's on the rear.

6 pointsBeen up at the farm where I help out one day a week. Did some fencing in one field, hung a gate at another and repaired some in one more. Best part of the day was when we got back to the farm in the afternoon. They've been using my 12' x 6' twin axle trailer for one or two jobs. They knew I wanted to sell it and surprised me with fat envelope full of cash.

6 pointsThank you EB, and if anyone needs some help on how to pack 9 tractors into the back of a pick-up truck, or rebuild an engine, or part numbers for not only Wheel Horse but other brands, or whats the best way to plant your wallet during plow days. Or the best place for a nap during " The Big Show". All lifes journeys are shared here. Not just tractor related. We share our pets, homes , family, jobs. We share what we eat, what we plant in the ground, how we move the ground and what we used to do it. All that information can be past along here. What you do with the information is up to the individual.
-
6 pointsTherein lies another good combination. Every single one of us is better at doing some things than other things, maybe even having a specialty in one or two particular things. I've always been fairly decent at making most machines do what they were designed to do in a smooth efficient manner. I do reasonably well at maintenance and repair. But to make one really shine and have a top shelf appearance? Well I don't think it takes very long for most people to figure out that's where your specialty lies.
-
6 pointsWow. That's tough to imagine. At 70, I have a son, a son in law, and 3 grand sons. I am hoping most of mine will find a home as they all have an interest in things mechanical
-
6 pointsI'm to the point in my life, that if I buy something, then I have to sell something else. I have all the toys I care to try to take care of. Some of my stuff I have had for 50 years. I have owned a '71 El Camino since I bought it new, A 1947 Chevrolet sedan delivery I bought in 1972 and a host of other stuff. I had to sell a few things such as a 1971 Chevelle with 28K miles to a 16 year old no less. My philosophy is if I can't keep my stuff stored inside then I can't keep it. I tell folks that "I have had the El Camino longer than I have had the wife and kids". I also joke and say about the Delivery, "Two more payments and this baby is mine!" I, like a lot of you, become "attached" to stuff. but realize that at some time in the future I am going to have to pare down--not looking forward to that time. My dad was dying of cancer. He came out to his shop where we were piling his tools on a flat bed trailer preparing for an auction. His eyes watered up, then he said, "You don't realize how much I have used these tools and what they have meant to me and you all treat them like junk."

5 pointsMc Master will sell you a pack. That way you can forget where they are when you need another one!

5 pointsI have one gate panel complete, need to skin the second. I chopped a leaf spring in ha lf as a support for the pneumatic wheel and tire.

5 pointsWorking prepping for the Big Show, bringing two tractors for sale. Photos to come. 1996 314H, three owner barn find, with only 93 original hours. 42 RD deck and Plow. 1973 No Name 10 - restored, No deck 1986 Snow Thrower - all there, like new Update: This 314-H actually has 97 hours on it, I was off by four. Both are being cleaned and serviced.
-
5 pointsAnd the people on here are as varied as the tractors, from all walks of life, varied backgrounds,interests,experiences..and all here sharing a bit of our time and lives and having fun together enjoying this hobby!(MORE THAN A HOBBY!!)
-
5 pointsWith all due respect I disagree wholeheartedly. Without variety things would be much less interesting. Neither this website or the world of machinery in general is 100% strictly about returning something to stock 100% of the time. Each of us has our preferences and appreciations. Take a look at the customs from @Bear G, or @wallfish, just two name two extremely fine examples. Keep it safe. Keep it clean. And keep posting things that have been modified.

5 pointsJim Kemp’s mufflers are really nice. I added a heat shield to mine and run it pretty close to the hood.

4 pointsIn keeping up with the deception, cut the stick shift stick off and welded it to the motion control lever. When the plate is installed and a small “boot” made, it should look like a manual

4 pointsI used Carlisle 6x12s on mine and I made my duel adapters if you need some PM me I can make you some

4 pointsI cleaned the outside of the tranny by soaking it in kerosene and using a scraper and brush to get the hard, crusty grease and dirt off. It was caked on about 1/4" thick in places. By looking at what is visible behind the zerks, I'm thinking that the previous owner or servicing dealer put regular lithium grease in. It's yellow. In the process of cleaning around the recessed axle bearings, I used brake cleaner, not thinking that it would run into the bearings and remove some of the lube. Now the bearings sound dry. Since the bearings get their lubrication from the inside (Bentonite grease) I want to force more in to fill the bearings. Since posting, I have found a 32 ounce container of Tecumseh/Peerless Bentonite grease out in Shiller Park, Illinois. $30 delivered, but at least I know I'm putting the right stuff back in.

4 pointsI have two more running. The Commando 800 was crudely fitted with a front mount and extension bars which were just 2x4 The tank on the front is a HFT 15 gallon ATV sprayer. I added a spray bat 6 feet that c0vers 8 feet. It was working just fine and then quit. The generator was working , but the rectifier was shot. One of the herd made a donation and all is fine. BTW, the battery for this tractor came on another tractor i bought last year and the sticker on it is from 2013 !! One of the Black Hoods is up and serviced with a worn idler pulley linkage replaced The pulley was almost worn through the linkage, so we went through it , the auto trans, and the engine for a rewire and it starts right up. Gonna be a backup tractor so my wife can help me mow. She already pulled me home with the sprayer failing at the farthest point of the property. The battery quit firing the spark at 5 volts. It's pobably not a bad idea for everyone with these older tractors to take the side shield off and examine the idler linkage. on occasion. The 300-500 newer series wear out as well with a plastic bushing through the sheel metal needing replacement or an upgrade to brass

4 pointsAny of you who want your round hoods to enjoy a nice retired life in Florida, I have plenty of room, no cost to you .

4 pointsWhen my Dad was forced to break up his shop, I organized a family "tool draft". After a lottery to determine the order (how else could you rank children and grandchildren?), first children and then grandchildren got to pick one tool each. We went around until pretty much everything was gone. There were even "trades" of picks, like sports drafts (I'll pick the table saw for you if you pick the belt/disk sander for me...). A couple of items which we knew were very important to someone in particular were tacitly understood to be "off limits" to picks until that person's turn. Like yours, my Dad was very sad to see the shop broken up but he told me he took solace that every tool went to someone in the family who wanted it and would use it. It was huge effort for me to catalog and organize everything (two solid weekends) and persuade everyone that this was a fair way to do but I look back with satisfaction that it turned out well and with no hard feelings. In fact, during the process we had some laughs and tears at some of the surprising choices--some grandchildren asking "what the heck is that used for" while others recounted Dad showing them how to use a particular tool and so that was their pick.

4 pointsI agree ! When I freshened up my 1994 520H, I debated whether to powder coat the wheels gloss white or back to a more original silver... I chose white for 2 reasons... 1. White looks better ( my opinion ) 2. It's my tractor ( fact ) Hey this is still the USA...
-
4 pointsMessage sent and received. Think i'll stick to posting the originals and nicely restored ones from here on out.

4 pointsI've only sold one so far. I sold it to a neighbor that just moved in. I couldn't let him buy something from Home Depot. He worked as a mechanic at one point in his life, so I'm sure he'll take good care of it. If he needs any help with it, I'm just up the street and always happy to help. Bill

3 pointsNot a whole lot to show other than a pile of parts accumulated. Oh and a 2nd 701 I found. Whoops. Thanks again guys for the pics and tips. Anything to help lessen the amount of time it takes scouring the web is extremely helpful. No budget here really. Just trying to get this thing back to where it will outlast my kids.

3 pointsI no there is a Setupmenu if you press more as five sec. The menu key. than it blinks for 5 sec. a value after the 5 sec. Next value is shown. to choose one value wait until it is displayed, press the menu key until it blinks 2 times, than this value is choosen. Connection the spark wire isn‘t really connected into the system, it is just a kind of Antenna to recieve the signalstrenght better. originally it is stuck from down to top and back to down. I found that the blank wire can contact the Tractors Surface what makes dubious things because of vibrations. So even on blank metal a short can happen. ( maybe your problem?) So i reroute the original wire on it’s mountpoint from top to down to top than pass thru the Hood ( double insulated with heat shrink tube) and along the Throttle wire in front to the Sparkplug and turn it 5x arround the Sparkwire. The reading is accurate and after each start i see the same Values. Checked it against a contactless rpm gauge for Motorcycles i have also. The Value fits after right Setup depending if your engine has points or not, or if you have a magneto you must sometimes choose 2 stroke engine to get right values. Don’t hit the Reset button except on service, that will immediately reset all counters. to switch between displaying of service interval or rpm gauge and hours push short the menu key with a fingertip. To go in Setup menu hit and hold (press) the menu key longer than 3 sec. ( on mine i must press it longer than 5 sec.) than you are in the Setup menu identificated by a flashing cl1in the display. The Setup Menu it begins with cyl. Setting cl1 = 1 cylindre - 5 sec flash if no key is pressed it switches over to the next item cl2 = 2 cylindre - 5 sec flash. If no key is pressed it switches over to the next item cl3 = 3 cylindre - 5 sec flash. If no key is pressed it switches over to the next item st2 = 2 stroke engine - 5 sec flash. If no key is pressed it switches over to the next item st4 = 4 stroke engine - 5 sec flash. If no key is pressed it Jumps out of the Setup routine. reset to display display shows now rpm 0000 and hr 0 if a Value is choosen, the system goes automagically to next setting wait until all your points are marked, than press and hold the menukey for at least again 6-7 sec display switch back to main with the choosen settings. setuproutine is done successfully - It needs a little time for the first setup, but it rocks. Edit- ah i found the Pict of my Tacho / RPM gauge ( left side of the Steering wheel)

3 pointsIndeed, off roading mowers got me into Wheel Horses. couple months later I have already saved 3 Wheel horses from rusting away/ junkyard. 4th one coming this week. All are restored to running/mowing condition. I don't have any WH for off roading at the moment, but have some AG, I can trow on, when I go to the forest. I love Horses so much, I treat them like they are made out of sugar..

3 pointsWas at a Classic Car Cruise-In a few weeks ago...overheard two guys talking...one telling the other he would never be able to sell his classic piece of USA made history for what he had in it. The other fellow said " Me neither, but I don't do it because I want to get my money back. I do it for the joy of restoring it, and because I love old cars" When I freshened up my 520H, I did it as best as I could (not perfect by no means), the way I liked it, and IT WAS FUN !

3 points@WHX24 last year traded me a 701 engine and my kid got his 401 after I farmed her out for some child labor dissing his garden. Still not sure how she ended up with it! What he didn’t know (nor did we) at the time, is the Clinton engine on it was original. No need to kick himself too hard though, she loves that thing. We had it out last night for the first time since September-ish... and with old gas it still fired on the third pull! No smoke, just good times!
