14 pointsHere's something different. This is an unintended project that fell in my lap as I wanted the Roof Palamino but that was sold out from under me. Still, these Roof 60 tractors are very cool machines and somewhat rare. It's worth putting the time in on it. I've been pecking away just a little at a time and looking forward just to the point it can driven. These were made as high end commercial mowers and most were sold to municipalities and places like that. They use a 60" mower deck that's built like a tank. Here's the tractor The Ross steering box bearings were toast but found a rebuild kit on epay. The race surfaces aren't great either but the advice from the experts over on Roof Riders said to clean them up and it should be fine. Had to cut the tube and shaft just to get it apart. The box is back together with the new parts and the steering shaft welded back together but still waiting on the new metal tube to arrive to finish it. Removed the Onan B48 (from the first pic) which was on it and loaded on a big Kohler K532 20 HP which is more of a correct engine for these. Man those engines are HEAVY! Just about blew a nut getting it on there. LoL. I'll cut a hole in the debris screen once the drive shaft adapter ic completely sorted out. It was missing the engine adapter to connect the drive shaft. These were made specifically for the single speed roof 60 one at a time so unobtainable. Found some adapters for the engine on epay to make something fit and work. Luckily the a Jacobson shaft is long enough to reach the drive shaft so that made it fairly easy. The adapter shaft is 1 1/8" and the hole in the end of the drive shaft is 1" so I had to spin down about 1/2" of the shaft end to fit inside the hole. I barely know how to use that lathe but was able to do this. Still need to make sure it's lined up perfect and then weld it together. That's as far as I got so far.

9 pointsWow! Thank you all so much. I am impressed to say the least. I'm gonna try to get this thing tore apart by the weekend. I'll let you all know what I find and if I can't figure it out. Just thought I would share my find on the back side of the belt cover. Grandpa signed his name for someone to find. He passed away in 72. 10 years before I was born.

9 points@Shawn P Welcome. The 701 is a very collectible hard to find horse. It is the first WH with the engine in the front. We love it when we hear of horses staying in the family. when these trannys pop out of 3rd gear. The cluster gear and 3rd gear teeth are typically worn round on the edge. This is a common old age problem caused by people shifting before coming to a complete stop. These are not synchronized transmissions. One of our vendors (just google) Wheelhorse Parts and More has bearings gaskets and seals and new 2 and 3rd gears. Also in the Vendor Section you will find A-z tractor who has lots of WH used parts. The same cluster gear and 2,3rd gear were used for many many years. In the Instructional Section you will find a video on overhauling you transmission by our Transmission Guru Stevasarus. To overhaul your transmission you will first have to accomplish 2 of the 3 Wheelhorse rites of passage 1 Removing the typically frozen rear hitch pin. Typ lots of penetrating oil. Then if needed, Since your going into the transmission using heat (torch rosebud) will be ok. 2 Removing wheel hubs. If your axle seals have been leaking it just might help them come off. Gain lots of penetrating oil over several days. The cast hubs are fragile and easily broken using a standard 3 legged puller. You a bearing splitter to go behind the hub flange and puller. Search for Hub Puller on here and you will find several good homemade ones. Lots of friendly help here so don’t be shy about asking questions

7 pointsI'm new to the horses. A fee weeks ago I inherited a family heirloom. A 61' 701. Originally owned by my grandfather. Passed on to my uncle then to me. Took me a couple evenings to get it running correctly but it is driveable. This forum has been very helpful so far so I decided to join. My uncle explained that he had always had trouble with it slipping out of 3rd gear under load. So I decided to take it up the hill in the back yard tonight and try it out. Sure enough chugging up the hill it popped out of gear and down the hill I went backwards. Thankfully no crash. He had tried to fix it years ago but had no luck and ended up creating a leak in the transmission upon putting it back together. Any idea on what to look for when I get this thing apart? Also I'm guessing gaskets for this are not available..... Anyone know thickness of the gasket between the two halves? Last question where to find axle seals? Thanks in advance for your time.

7 pointsI had all the tractors out of the shed today, to do some rearranging. I thought it was a good time for a photo op. I put this in "other brands" forum, because they are all not Wheel Horses, But I think they all look good. They are not all shined up and pretty, but they still look OK from a distance. All My tractors are in storage now, except the 125, which in pieces, spread over my garage and house. I am waiting on the media blaster, and the machine shop. I have often heard about farmers rolling tractors. I always wondered how they did that. I found out today. I put Casper on his side, just on that small side hill.

6 pointsFinally!!! A small engine manufacturer that puts the oil in at the factory so that you don't have to. This is a true statement that I got from someone when I asked if they had checked their oil. "Oil? Don't they put that in at the factory?" What can you say to someone like that?
-
5 pointsI had all the tractors out of the shed today, rearranging things, to make more room. This is a 1962 Lawn Boy Loafer. You probably won't see many of these around. It was Lawn Boys first, and failed attempt at a rider. After this, they went to a more conventional tractor design. But this thing is a lot of fun. You can remove the mower deck, and attach sulky wheels. Then you can simply pull a cart, or even plow snow. Although I wouldn't recommend over 18 to 20" of snow. I mowed most of my side yard with it, but after running out of gas the second time, I switched to a tractor. If I ever get caught up on tractors, this will get completely rebuilt. When I got it, both motors were froze. I was afraid they had been straight gassed, but they were simply stuck. Everything inside is new, and they both run like a champ.

5 pointsGreat looking 701 !! As stated 3rd gear is known for going out from people trying to shift on the fly. These gears are no longer available from the factory but luckily Lowell has taken it upon himself to reproduce them. Here is a link for you. https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/product/3523-3rd-gear/ Here is a link to his transmission kits. This kit includes all the basic gaskets, seals and bearings required to rebuild your transmission. https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/product/base-kit-1-for-manual-transmission/ The #1533 differential carrier bearings are not included in the basic kit as they are not usually an issue. If you find that these bearings are bad on your tranny, here is a link to the basic kit with the 1533's included. Note: 1533 bearings are only available thanks to Lowell choosing to reproduce them. https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/product/kit-1-with-2-1533-bearings-for-manual-transmission/

5 pointsThese have been around a few years. Makes me think back to those 1960's Toro Whirlwind mowers, with a Teccy engine. They had a dome on one side of the block with a push button. You never were supposed to check the oil. Every time you would use the mower, push the button in. Gravity would fill the oil right to the top of the original plug. Just top up the cup every so often.. because every Teccy mower engine burnt oil.. They've been pushing this junk for a few years now, I remember seeing it on a Bolens push mower at Lowes a few years back. I, of course, own the original 'never change the oil' lawn mower.. In my day, we called it a LAWN-BOY.. I never get power mowers in for repairs anymore. It's not even worth the hourly rate to try and look at one. I've not had a carb clean order in some time.. They show up with spun rods and or a vented block almost every time.. I well remember doing both the oil AND the trans grease yearly on old Toro's..

4 pointsRipped down about 500 pounds of English Ivy from the garage walls. Hate that stuff! Fired up Big Bertha the 18 HP (Briggs Twin) 4000 PSI pressure washer and burned about 2 gallons of fuel pressure washing all the tendrils off. Took most of several layers of paint off. Went to the box store for some masonry paint... was going to pay $26 a gallon (need 2 gallons) but I took a quick look at the 'mistake' rack and serendipity struck me in the face! There on the rack for NINE BUCKS EACH were TWO gallons of durn near the same color I had picked out of the exact same masonry paint I was gonna buy! Now I have an extra $30 burning a hole in my pocket! It's SAM ADAMS TIME! Need to do a little patching on the stucco, but should be ready to paint by the weekend. Hope the weather holds up!

4 pointsStarted today with the great gas hunt that is happening on the east coast . Only waited 3 minutes ,the local WAWA was selling 93 octane for the same price of 87 octane ( they were out ) {2.859 USD } per gallon. Up from 2.769 last week. Then off to the cigarette store for smokes and Lotto tickets and scratchers. Then to big blue box store to buy weed eater . Picked up a Kobal cordless for $159.00 plus tax. Got home and realized I forgot to stop at local shop to ask if the want to tackle POS El Camino A/C unit. Checked it yesterday clutch not working, getting power. Hope it is not compressor. SWMBO was happy about high test gas at regular price. Then she won $27.00 on scratchers which I paid $14.00 , not sure how it became her money but it always does. Put weed eater together , worked on replacing ceiling light in shed , finished that , battery fully charged , trimmed everything . Now sitting on my butt drinking cup of coffee thinking about how I can pull @squonk 's chain before day is over.

4 pointsJust booked a room at the not so Super 8 My baby boy is driving me to the big show to see what the Wheel Horse thing is all about. Will be setting up Thursday morning in the same place as usual. Looking forward to seeing everyone. Even Squonk Last minute decision so unfortunately I don't have anything special for all the support members this year

4 pointsAnd this one has some videos. This is very close to yours...I explain the difference. BTW, I'm betting your cluster gear is just fine. It is the 2nd / 3rd fork gear you want to replace if shims don't work. It is the inside of the gear that you need to look at...when in 3rd gear that fork gear sits on top of the input gear, it does not inter change with the cluster gear when in 3rd gear. It inter-changes with the pinion gear under the cluster gear in 3rd.

4 pointsThe fiberglass hoods really held up well. It's a shame WH didn't use the same material for the rear fenders on the B/C-XX5 and D250 tractors instead of that cheap ABS plastic. And, unlike the steel ones, the FRP hoods don't rust under the paint. The FRP hood on the C-161-Twin was a time-crunch rush required to fit the Briggs twin cylinder engine rather than the self-destructing KT17's that had been planned in the abandoned C-171. Who knows why they went with a unique headlamp assembly, but I'd be willing to bet it was a mistake made when dimensioning the drawings or something. It was out of character for WH to not use carryover parts, especially on a limited run tractor. Steve

4 pointsThe nice thing about the 3d printer, is it can be printed as needed. I don't have to carry a stock or anything so I can do one off or custom items easily. So that one piece only one person needs...no problem!

4 pointsLOL! That's pretty much what I did to fund my WH. I got a Troy Bilt pony riding mower from a coworker who mentioned he wanted to throw it away but hadn't got around to it and already had a new mower. I told him I'd come by and get it and he said go ahead. Fixed about 20 things on it but got it going really good, put about $100 in it. Used it for a couple years. Then the right deal on a WH finally came a long. Bought the WH and then sold the TB. Considering both sales I'm only out of pocket about $50 for the WH. Good deal and well worth the time in my book. Looking to do it again...

4 pointsOriginal receipt from 1/18/95 $4123 for the 416h and $700 for the deck. Pretty cool. Im gonna spend at least a few weeks reading thru all these papers 😂

3 pointsFew mini steps forward. Firstly i welded the Swing plates together. Check the swing Angle neutral 30 deg to right side... - that‘s ok i believe. Inbetween the Swingplates cooling down ( dang they where hot, move without gloves is a real goofy idea..) i tried to play a little blacksmith with the induction heater. Therefore i use a 20x5 mm Flat steel and heat it up with the inductor and after 30 sec it begins to glow dark and after 72 sec the steel was bright red glow and can be bend it with just hands and less force. That‘s really nice, i love it. than i try to ben both at the same spot to get a feeling how exact i can work with the inductor. It works exact and quicker than i believed, same accuracy like a flame. - pretty Cool - At least i fabricated few Distance bolts.
-
3 pointsNice family ride you’ve got there! As for the hitch pin, if it’s seized up... heat and spin what you can get a pipe wrench on, don’t try to hit it with a hammer or punch to drive it through. What the hammer does is mushroom that shaft out and make it even harder to remove.
-
3 pointsI don't have enough experience with any other brand to answer that. Trina and I aren't collectors. We have our tractors to work. It's just a simple matter of practicality for us. Wheelhorse tractors are reliable, tough, easy to build and maintain. Parts availability is excellent. For a working tractor there just is not another one that we would buy....
-
3 pointsThat has to be left in tact for sure. @stevasaurus has some great Youtube videos on rebuilding transmissions. This transmission is the same as yours.
-
3 pointscx As your aware the tubing is an odd size. When I rebuilt the Ross box on my Cade 180 I used tubing from kids round trampoline legs. It fits almost perfectly, just a little emery work on the outside and it tapped right in.

3 pointsThere we go..just a general idea, overall construction the same as the others. Can easily be customized if someone wanted with logo etc., but otherwise should print well.

3 pointsThe company I worked for manufactured road sweepers, amongst other equipment. An option was an hydraulically driven pressure washer pump, (all systems, drive, auxiliary services, were all hydraulic). Operators were always instructed, 🤔during training, “NOT” to pressure wash the engine whilst it was running???🤔
-
3 pointsGot a newer lawn boy from the neighbor says it won't run. Fresh gas and two pulls, it ran fine. I figure his teenage son didn't want to trim the banks that day. Went to change the oil and voila!..... not a drain plug in sight! Na Da! and it did not even have one of those fancy stickers. Tipped it on it's side carb and tank fill up, oil fill tube down. Actually worked better and I could take the blade off for a touch up while draining. Great design! I figure the manufactures figure the life of that engine lines up with the rest of the mower and how much folks cut grass today. I have been running it for a few years, at least one tank of fuel a week and it seems fine. Watch, the rod will throw tomorrow!
-
3 pointsI can 3d print a replacement version just like i did for the common lenses. Lenses can be kept clear, frosted, or even tinted and swap out easy.
-
3 pointsOk, the back hoe build is very cool, no doubt. @elcamino/wheelhorse wants to see the new drill press, again I'm in on that. Now for some really important stuff. I want to see a picture of the still that you will be using to turn this... into Tequila!!!
-
3 pointsThanks @ebinmaine Eric you sent me to Belgium for holiday‘s but actual it is not possible for me to do that .... 😎😂 i like to built my own Backhoe... btw @Wheel Horse 3D did anybody inform you, i do that ? 😂😂😂
-
3 pointsIf you can't find the correct belt by WH part number, you might have to go with an aftermarket. The double bevel is just a BBxxx (whatever the length is)- which I apologize for not remembering. Some might call blasphemy for my saying so, but an aftermarket is better than a non working mower. It won't last as long as OEM, but it will work for months or more.
-
3 pointsYou need to keep both It never hurts to have a backup. Winter time you can have both blower and plow at the ready. If one should go down, the other is right there.
-
3 pointsThank you all for the birthday wishes, they really do mean a lot to me. I am so fortunate to have the privilege to be able to run this place for you all. While I got no seat time, I got family time and it was great!
