16 pointsHi guys, and Thank You for all the Prayers and Well Wishes. I had Covid-19 back in October and November last year. I had it pretty bad for a few weeks, short of breath, joint aches, choking cough, some fever, no apatite and sooo tired. I slept for days. I lost 25 pounds and could not taste or smell anything. When it was over I became what they call a "long hauler". I still had the shortness of breath, lack of taste and smell, and still ached in the joints. I could do things, but not for long. No head ache or fever, just blah. I started going to doctors to see if they could help me. I finally found an Ear, Nose & Throat Dr., we did a bunch of tests (including a CT Scan). Found the polyps and signs of some infection. The surgery was sure more then I thought it was going to be. I think my doctor knew, as he said, "We will see what we find and go from there." Well after 4 hours of surgery, he kept me over night for observation. The nurses were absolutely fantastic, they were having a tough day also. My 1st nurse must have sat with me for more then a 1/2 hour as we just talked with each other. That was nice as I could not get comfortable so as to sleep. Up all night and nothing but coffee. Well, I'm back home and I can definitely breath better. Still a ways to go, but this was a huge step in the right direction. BTW, Chris and I have both had our 2nd Moderna shots last Friday...probably why I am so sore. Anyway, it was soo nice to get back on Red Square and then find this thread. You guys humble me and really know how to make someone feel better. THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!! Please get the vaccination and practice social distancing and masks...be smart I would not wish what I have gone through on anybody. It is extremely painful.

12 pointsBeen awhile fellas, life is nuts right now, but the stable report as follows: Hoss continues to do his work flawlessly and looks pretty doing it Lil booger 655 got a new mower deck wheel and is holding down yard duty at home beautifully. Lawn Duty 1277 got the K341 swap late last fall- it is taking care of the acre at the weekend place and throws grass about 4 miles- day and night compared to the hurting 12hp. Ol Smoky 701 is on garden disc duty and continues to give random issues but promised me he will hang in there til he can be torn down and redone correctly. The B-1 bomber got new bumpers and ammo can toolbox rack, a complete ignition overhaul from A to Z, a later model fuel tank under the rear to carry extra fuel, and a new set of bearings and seals in the trans. It continues to hit the trails, creek beds, rock crawls and hill climbs on a regular basis and has suffered ZERO mechanical issues. A true testament to just how dang tough these machines were built! Looking SO forward to putting some faces with names next month- I am BIG SHOW BOUND, baby!!!

8 pointsGeneration gap, yesterday Danny said he was looking for a shear, told him I knew of one that may be available as the owner had retired from the scrap business. Owner was trying to do a private sale and his phone number was on the fence, using google maps discovered the property has sold and the new owners are using the property as an impound lot. Should know later today if the shear is available. Speaking with Danny on the phone this morning, he's thinking hydraulic, these kids just don't get it. The scrap yards first used these mechanical shears back in the late 40's and early 50's, one yard in Vancouver I contacted this morning have two their still using on a daily basis. For your entertainment the Wheel Horse operating a mechanical shear, the one I'm after is much larger.

7 pointsI agree Joe, the origonal WH design with one set screw on a woodruff key was economical and not too bad . But IMO there are much better designs. The second set screw that was added later helped, but beileve a square key the full length of the hub bore is a much better design.. With the full length keyway all ready in the hub for the woodruff, the cost to mill a full length keyway in the axle could not have been much more that the woodruff slot and may have actually been less expensive because a standard end mill would be used rather than an expensive flycutter.

7 pointsSome law‘s have to be checked for their senses again i.m.h.o. Personally i see no senseful reason, why a burglar or a thief should be protected, there is no reasonable reason for anyone to break into someone else's property.

6 pointsI will agree that a wedge bolt would hold the hub on and be a permanent fix but a standard through bolt will egg the hole out over time because nothing is tight or wedged together. Even with a brand new hub and a brand new axle. If you measure with a micrometer you will find that it is impossible to put a 1" shaft in a 1" hole. Either the shaft has to be slightly under sized or the hole has to be slightly over sized. For an example .001" difference between the hole and the shaft would be considered a press fit . Any slip fit will have more clearance, over time this clearance will grow unless the 2 parts are crimped together some how. Be that a wedge pin, set screw, or use of a roll pin to wedge the trough hole tight. I believe that if you decide to drill a through hole for the hub and you don't have the tools to create a hole for a wedge pin, you would be better off to use a heavy roll pin instead of a bolt.

5 pointsNope, no tractors. But I came home with this and had enough left from a Franklin to buy lunch. HB 1500lb ATV lift I added 4X4 blocks Hand cart with cast wheels w/ zerks. Swivel casters for my sons rolling gazebo hot tub cover.....In the design stage. Bimini top for the crabbing boat. Bucket of joist hangers for the gazebo and my new tractor shed. Oh, I noticed the hub/axle lock on this tractor while I had it up on the lift. Another option for those bar key,hub,axle problems.

5 pointsI generally double setscrew on all my girls that are going to see heavy work. The thing with our hubs is they are usually going to brown weld on and they never come loose. Since we preach anti seize on them now they don't brown weld. I find that the set screws loosen on hubs that have been off & anti seized so regular checking of them is required. Ever notice hubs problems worst on axle seals that were leaking? Ed nailed it on full length.

5 pointsAs always interested in mechanical stuff but not seeing to many pin on applications. Mostly keyed. I looked at the side pin application and it can be interesting. Found this pick that kind of explains why. When I think about the WH issue with hubs. I just think the designers wanted a strong set up that was economical to produce / assemble, and long lasting. Thinking mission accomplished. 20 or more years of life....not to bad.

5 pointsIf we are talking about a worn out hub that is no longer a good sliding fit to the axle, I agree, no bolting or new key would work. A to Z does sell new two piece conical compression hubs that will compress down to fit a undersize axle. But, with a good fitting hub and axle I believe a properly installed body bolt or a taper pin in a reamed hole with the parts assembled is a stronger connection than a woodruff key. This hub/axle connection is probably the weakest link in the Wheel Horse drive train and I do believe there are better ways to make a stronger connection . Here is an example. After using the standard thru the center pinning of large butteryly valve discs to 2-6" shafts for 30 years, we discovered we could double the shear area of the pin and double the strength of the connection by simply moving the pin to the edge of the shaft.

5 pointsYeah, I have cut several shafts and rejoined them with rigid shaft couplings. I would not recommend a Lovejoy or any flexible coupling. This shaft is only supported by a bearing at each end and requires a rigid shaft in between. A flexible coupling would be used to connect two shafts that are supported by two bearings each. I am concerned this arrangement will cause excess wear in the lower bearing block and possibly binding due to misalignment. 3/4" rigid shaft couplings can be bought for $10-$15 dollars. I typically weld to the lower half and bolt thru the upper half for easy disassembly.

4 pointsThursday Apr. 29. That was record time ! I added a couple of pieces so it was 11. $140. I am not a body and fender man, but I am going to attempt a little bondo work on the fender pan, and dash tower. The pieces come back perfectly clean, and ready for paint, after w wipe down with paint thinner.

3 pointsI mostly retreated a picture from the 1961 dealer sales flyer I have that shows a lineup of optional accessories. the accessories are the suburban fender and tool box option, tombstone weight, stepped foot rests, and seat hinge. I have not seen another seat hinge like this besides the one I own. The sign I show in my pic is also the hard to find circa 1961 plastic sales and service sign that is also pictured in the same paperwork.

3 pointsI’m having an issue with my 1971 commando 800 she’s daily driver but inspected well the issue I’m having is when I put my right foot on the floor board and have pressure just sitting then it make this metal vibration noise but when I get off the tractor and I lift the floor board up there no noise I think it’s the pulley for the transmission hitting the cover but I’m not sure how to resolve it thank you everyone!

3 pointsYeah, the 520 uses automotive-style ones. Kind of overkill on a typical garden tractor, but the 520 is all about overkill... But good for use with an FEL, or just hanging the weight of the 2-stage snowthrower off the front end. Upgrades not needed that way.

3 pointsYou could use one that has a little shorter float travel. It won't be completely accurate but will look the part. I have also used a cap without the gauge on it, just gotta remember to look down the hole to see if you have enough gas to get the job done.

Thats kinda a deal breaker for you tho. Still we can help walk you through it with the help of The Dino's vids. All bearings and seals if needed can be had here. Reproduction Tractor Parts, Medford, MN (wheelhorsepartsandmore.com) Lowell's a straight shooter ... most of the time but lookout for his missus she can be a fist full! BTW Thank you for becoming a supporter this means pics can be endless on your end and that will help us help you. I have a new handle for you... gonna call you Beef..... as in beef wellington! For inspiration I restoed this one and another just like it that was worse.

3 pointsI really dislike it when people through bolt the hub to the axle. The motorcycle lift works great for working 's. I built this to gain an extra height on my lift. It only sticks out past the frame rails by 1/2" on each side. This allows the whole tractor to be assembled while it is on the lift. The tabs on top fit inside the frame so that the tractor can't slide off side to side. The tabs on the bottom keep it from sliding off from the lift.

3 pointsHonestly. That carb needs a couple days soak in Berrymans, and put through a sonic cleaner. You will never get it clean with a can of carb spray, and Q-tips. I would actually put on a China carb, rather than use that, as it is. Just my opinion. Gasket Partstree 271030-S $4.83
