7 pointsGot the steering wheel fixed last Friday and took it for a lap around the farm. Found out the bushing on the column was worn out,, I couldn't tell with steering wheel so loose. Tore in to it last night and just finished it. Flange bearings don't work on the 520 as there isn't a place to bolt them like on the 312. I do have a Wheel Horse parts supply, so I had to find something that would work. Didn't want to bother my machinist friends. as both helped me last week. I came up with a plan and use a 6203 R12 bearing that would not fit with out some modification, Took a while but I got it. Also cleaned up the dash wire brushed and painted the bolts along with the new steering wheel adapter. Here is the pictures from last week Today

6 pointsFound this 520-8 today for $300.00. PO says it last was running 10-12 years ago. Needs a lot of TLC to get it up and running but it will make a great summer project. As you can see I have already started the tear down. The PO says the hours on the clock are correct but who knows?

6 pointsYou ever buy a 10 pack of something on Amazon, but you only need 2 of them so you end up having 8 leftover in your toolbox for YEARS? That was my story with these #15 o-rings but I found a use for 6 of them today. I pulled them over the deck lift handle on the 312-8 that I use for mowing, and they fit right in the little concentric slots on the grip. Now that they're raised you get a nice grip on the handle, it basically makes finger grooves which is kind of nice.

5 pointsHi You will find it much easier to steer with the tri ribs. I originally tried the eight inch ones, then ten inch, but I kept getting punctures from thorns, etc, from the hedges around the paddocks. I now have ten inch “AG” tyres on the front, ride is harsher compared to turf tyres, but control is better. I think, the larger diameter the better, especially in muddy conditions. But you would need to convert to trailer type hubs to use larger than eight inch wheels. There are quite a few posts relating to converting. Converting to trailer hubs also gives you access to a much greater selection of wheels in the correct widths for the narrower tyres. Mentioning “Horse Poo”, last year we used some from one of our heaps, which has stood for about 2/3 years, and is the consistency of peat, to plant some potatoes as an experiment. We ended up with foliage growing over six feet tall. (Too much nitrogen feeding the greenery). But we had some huge potatoes as well! Doug. p.s. You may find that with the tri ribs, you could use a bit of extra weight on the front of your tractor, especially if you have a heavy-ish implement on the back, or you’re towing/pulling something heavy or ground engaging! p.p.s. It’s getting embarrassing, but I’ll post this photo that I keep posting to show the ten inch ag tyres on my machine. The other pic shows one of the paddocks in March this year.

4 pointsThanks for the advice and wisdom everyone!! I regret not being around my papa enough to soak up his brain.. but i have alot of memories and will be keeping this Wheel Horse in the family.. I brought her home today after having some work done... Still missing headlights and original seat.. Also someone painted the engine black, hard to believe that my papa would of did that. Also I found these implements near me, I am going to check them out this week..

4 pointsIs it @cschannuth that has a nice Briggs twin?? My 78 that was my dad‘s has the Briggs twin in it. It’s mowed and pushed snow in very hilly conditions for its entire life. He bought it when it was a year old from our neighbor who was aggravated that he broke the seat pan on it. Dad bought it from him and immediately put a steel pan on it and it’s been that way ever since.

4 pointsKev check your filter for application. Preference for me is suction, 25 micron. I think this offers the pump / valve unit the most protection from a rusty tank contamination. When I build my own tank extra care can be taken to keep clean. The last one was a 2x4 tubing tower. used a diesel fuel rinse out. I have done those both ways, no real wrong way. Sometimes room is the biggest issue. If using in a return application, using a pump intake strainer is a good idea. I like the 1" ones from MMC. Welded a 1 inch pipe bushing to the tank and the filter screws into the bushing extending into the tank. I think they are around 125 micron?? looks like there are various ones 30,60,100 Some other fuel for thought, most of those filters have have an internal bypass. I would say that one you have is sufficient size and will be good for years. Is this off the table or next? Since you got that tube bender and such.

3 points@pullstart The brazing was a bust and I was basically unsuccessful building up the shafts to my satisfaction with the welder too. Maybe good enough for some, but not for me. So I came up with alternate plan for the front bracket pins. I could not justify almost $20 each for those pins! Sooooo, I hit the box store for some 1/2" metal tube with 1/16 wall thickness which means 3/8" ID and a 3/8" carriage bolt fits snugly inside. A 4-1/2" carriage bolt is a perfect size, some 3/8" flat washers and Nyloc nuts. I think I spent about $10 on everything. (I already had some of the hardware). The picture below is missing one of the flat washers that goes under the nut. The tubing is cut just slightly longer than the roller. I had to grind off part of the square on the carriage bolt to get the washer to slip over and the whole thing tighten up so it doesn't flop around in the bracket. That small ring is a piece of the tubing and serves to center the nut end of the carriage bolt in the 1/2" hole in the bracket. It's a little tricky to get the thing together, you have to slip the flat washers in place while holding the roller and push the bolt through. Kinda need three hands. So that takes care of the worn front pins. On to the rear shaft with the two rollers on the 1/2" bar: As I said, I wasn't happy with building them up with the welder and the brazing didn't really work out either, so out came the Sawzall and grinder. I took Pullstart's suggestion to heart. Cut the worn bar out, ground down the welds, and drilled out the remaining piece of the original rod. THEN... I grabbed a piece of 1/2" steel rod, and made a 'lathe' by clamping my 1/2" drill into my vice and cut e-clip slots in the rod with a hacksaw as the rod was turning. Worked PERFECTLY! The bar is 16" long and the e-clip slots are 1/8" from the end on the original. I left a little extra on the end. The OD on the inside of the slots is 0.405 for a 1/2" e-clip. Ready to weld the new bar in! I should have done this BEFORE I repainted the shaft! It was still rather soft when I was working on it. I actually didn't plan on going this far with it. Nothing another coat of paint won't fix! I'm SUPER happy the way this is turning out! That main 3/4" shaft has a slight bend in it. I may leave it be cuz I can't think of a good way to straighten it and it's not really that bad. One idea I had was jacking the car and setting it on wood blocks under the tire and lowering the car on it. Yeah, I think not... I never noticed it when it was installed on the deck but judging by the other damage to the deck it's clear that a previous owner rammed the deck into something quite solid while backing up at a good clip. Almost there!

Picked it up because I'm pretty sure the scraper blade will fit my 1994 520H ( with some slight modifications to the scraper blade as far as attaching it to the hydraulic lift arm ). I got it for a grand total of $ FR.EE !

3 pointsWell I brought home another wheel horse, a c161twin automatic. I really bought the tiller and got a solid 42” rear discharge deck and the tractor in the deal. I really don’t know what to do with it. It isn’t running but I think is been sitting in a barn for a very long time. Had a mouse infestation in the air cleaner. Came with the house a young couple bought. I don’t know much about black hoods but the fender pan and hood are fiberglass.

3 pointsI got the screw out and it looked fine but when we tried to tighten it up it broke off. My father-in-law was going to remake it with his lathe from the remaining bolt. Thank you all for the help! You guys are so helpful. What kinds of maintenance should I be doing to avoid things like this in the future? Are there pictures of certain parts of the tractor that I should take to help you identify potential problem areas? Attached is a picture of my youngest "driving" the tractor in low gear - he was thrilled. Loves the "broom broom."

3 pointsJust find a nice piece of stainless tube slightly larger and longer than whats on there, slip it over existing pipe and clamp it. Stainless exhaust pipe is quite thin so doesn’t weigh too much and is usually not too expensive. Doug.

3 pointsDepends on the Worker Dave, i have my Valves on right side and be fine with them. btw Kev. Put the Filter in the return line never in the high pressure line, because if you set the system under a higher pressure with a higher Load or a stall on the cylindres the whole pressure otherwise stay‘s on your filter and filtercase. While the filters housing itself is not that thick, it can maybe blast by higher loads or even on hydraulic stall. ( reach endpoints of the cylindres) That‘s the way some Hydraulic guy‘s teaches me to do. great Work you did on this Loader.

3 pointsThe English monarchy is a mysterious entity, full of rules, traditions and custom that must seem strange to everyone. Philip played a huge part in making sure the monarchy was up to date and relevant despite all the years of history and tradition tying it up. He worked damn hard to do this and gave up so much to support the Queen through her reign. What the future holds for this family and its place in our modern world is up for debate. With Harry dishing the dirt and people saying the Queen should quit and pass the crown direct to William it is becoming a bit of a circus. I truly hope that the Queen reigns until her death and that Charles inherits the throne for however long he has before his son takes over the family firm. This is the way it should be , not some popularity contest like on TV. As Monty Python once said "You don't vote for Kings" Just my ten penneth

3 pointsBit of a bummer evening, the glow in the dark filament came in the wrong size, the glow in the dark paint was a brick. Trying to reconstitute the paint with solvent, and put in for a return on the filament. But I did get some painting started on an order and a few spacers will be done by morning for a test fit.

3 pointsI can state with absolute certainty that it is a rare man able to be consort to a Queen with the grace and devotion to duty he has shown. Worth noting, that he was not even a citizen of the UK until just before he married Elizabeth yet he gave his all to the country. Especially inspirational to me is that he regularly made mistakes, owned them, and then carried on as best he could.

2 pointsWhen I wired Cinnamon Horse C160 I put a maxi fuse in the battery cable and a 25 in the main ignition switch feed wire. Ran for 6 or 8 months fine. Plowing snow one NIGHT in the @#$&)+$. Road it died dead dead nothing dead died. Damn. Pushed it about 10 feet to the driveway and tossed a new fuse in.... no trouble since........

2 pointsI was able to prep the sheet metal today. First a little mud work to take care of some imperfections. After finishing the mud work all of the sheet metal received a coat of self etching primer, 3 coats of gray urethane primer, and a mist coat of black primer to use as a guide coat. Tomorrow's plans consist of scrubbing the black guide coat off with 400grit sand paper and laying down some nice red paint.

2 pointsI would consider welding reinforcement plates with bushings on the frame, then use a slightly longer shoulder bolt for a pivot. Just about all of the wear in that hole went up. You could use the bottom of the hole to locate the new repair components. I do not own, and haver never worked on an XI, so this is just a suggestion.
