13 pointsI packed the big shoes and some critter feed on the 520 and plowed my way to the woods. Hiked the rest of the way. The new 6" snow with a coating of ice and 2 more inches of snow made a great surface to use the big shoes. Never broke thru the ice crust. Filled some some bird feeders. Headed home.

9 pointsThose are pretty high end snow blowers. Probably cost an arm and a leg. steve

7 pointsMy little 8HP C-85 has been my main goto for pushing snow for years. I was so happy to mount my first ever 48" blade and eager to push the first snow until I found that it really wouldn't push much snow. So chains! And then it would push some snow but I lost some steering. Filled the tires and pushed heavier snow but lost more steering. Added rear weights and could now for the first time hear most of the 8 horses getting into it, but steering really sucked! Then I added roller chains! OMG! First time ever now I can push the snow banks back with an angled plow! Unbelievable! Thank you @wallfish!!! I don't know if you came up with this idea or just passed it on but WoW! What an idea that I don't think I would have ever come up with! I should have done it long ago but it was just recently that I finally got around to adding the rear weights and could really push but still no steering against an angled load. Great idea John! I think another category or FAQ with top shelf ideas like this would be incredibly handy for all Wheel Horse AND all GT owners, especially newbies! Sidenote: Both of mine fell off within the first few minutes when aired as the picture shoes. I should have taken another picture... Got to have more air pressure to form a recessed area to retain the roller chain. I fitted them as tightly as I could empty then aired up to 25 PSI. Not enough for mine. This time I watched the tire depression the chain was causing as I aired and stopped when it was noticeable. 50 PSI! I released air down to 40. Old hard tires! New ones might not need that much and I've heard success stories at 25 PSI. I was going to grind a shallow recess into the tread if this didn't work at 40 PSI but I just ran it through a torture test and they are both on. Thank You!

7 pointsI’ve got my Dad’s 20+ year old toro paddle wheel single stage 2 stroke... always starts, loud, smokes, rattles like hell, paddles never stop... Use it for big storm touch up or just to annoy the neighbors... Ain’t lost any fingers or toes yet... I call it the “Al Gore Ralph Nader Snowerator” LOVE IT!!! Am I in danger...?

7 pointsDid y'all know coffee is hot enough to burn you too? Also toasters shouldn't be used in the bath tub
-
6 pointsThis is a joke right!? The bath tub is my favorite place for making toast!
-
6 pointsYears ago a owners manual for your car would have instructions on changing a tire or setting the spark plugs gap. Now it tells you "Don't drink the battery acid"
-
6 pointsMy wife would laugh at me if I did that. Of course my feeders are 5 feet from my house!
-
6 pointsI prefer to lube the spiral gear with dry graphite powder. I have had good luck with it.

5 pointsThe chopsticks idea was my mother’s which we used on a 1054 Wheel Horse transmission rebuilt! It worked great! You can put a dab of peanut butter on the end of chopstick and push it in detention hole. Then push down the shift rail. Breaking the chopstick is no problem!

5 pointsMovement is a win in my opinion. You learned a ton along with several others of us so not one second of what you did was wasted. It also kept you busy for a while. Might not exactly be a high-speed ball of fire but I think you done all right.

5 pointsAcross the street and uphill from us there is a farm that was in operation from somewhere in the mid-1800s until the 1950s or 60s. It's about 40 acres or so now. Lots of stone walls around and in the middle of what used to be one of the pastures which is basically a side Hill, there is a house sized pile of boulders that we've taken quite a few rocks from to make our own walls. That very venture is what caused us to find our first Wheelhorse tractor. The current owners are wonderful people and we've traded favors back and forth a few times over the years. Couple years ago Trina let them borrow our wood splitter. Our idea of payment was to make sure it was full of gas when they returned it. Their idea of payment was to give us a half cord of wood. This chunk of wood came from that land so it's literally a part of our local history.

5 pointsThese types of posts do actually break the rules, but don't worry no one is getting kicked off the forum. When a member posts a classified ad in the general forum area, we generally lock that ad, and ask them to please use the classified section as that is where classified ads belong. But the classifieds are for member equipment only and we do not allow ads from other sites. "The classifieds are for MEMBER equipment only. Please do not post links to ad's or auctions which are hosted on other sites. Any such postings will be deleted". This is where it's against RedSquare rules. There are many reasons why, and some of them were discussed above. I realize some members disagree with not allowing ads from other sites. Two other reasons are, I personally do not want this forum littered with links or ads to items which don't belong to our members. Imagine coming here and seeing ad over ad for machines, parts etc scattered throughout the pages. Finally, and it's happened, the owner of the machine may not want his listing on the forum and open for discussion on RedSquare. We generally don't mind if the post is in response to a question, such as "Anyone know of a D180 with loader for sale" A valid response would be, yes I saw one on FaceBook Marketplace here: (insert more description). Other places where things are usually acceptable is when you've noticed a great deal or special run by a storefront. "Harbor freight has mower tire changer tools on-sale until July 3rd for $19.95, check it out link". Hope this makes sense and helps.

5 pointsIf you ask Red Green, any idea with duct tape is a good idea!
-
5 pointsOff the printer this morning with my painting practice head...need to adjust the pivot a mm or 2, and reinforce the tail a bit.
-
4 pointsNo, not a green tractor. Cleaning out some old college drawers I found this. The NEW green calculator.......no wires, no batteries, no chargers, no fossil fuels. It does require an operator with two hands and a brain.

4 pointsI remember a old snowblower story. Every morning at work, 9am sharp, we conducted a planning meeting. All the department heads and the Safety Director included. One of the things discussed was the accidents (if any) from the previous 24 hours. The Safety guy started with this every meeting. If you had and accident in your area a mitigation explanation was requested. The Safety Guy would bust our balls picking apart our plans. One morning we were getting ready and the Safety guy came in and had his arm in a sling, gaze bandages and elastic wrapped hand. The GM said let's start with safety, and one of the department heads ask about the hand. The GM turned to him (safety guy) and said why don't you share your story? He said this happened at home, GM said I know. He went on about trying to clear the chute on his running snow blower and just about lost two fingers. Boy did he take the heat about that accident. Lots of "what are you going to do about it" questions! Justice was served!

4 pointsYep, mine also. But I used this to reduce the cost of the drive-in movies. Two full fares in the front seat and 2-3 freebies in the trunk.

4 pointsI use 3 in 1 garage door lube, spays on wet and drys leaving a nice lube film. Like Red Hot I use that s##t on everything!

4 pointsThis was the old worker a couple year back, 40 pounds of wheel weight. Chains will mark the concrete, but by the time summer came, the marks were gone.

4 pointsYears ago gramps had the Bosch starter on the Electro 12 rebuilt, in his line of work he could do anything pertaining to it. It looks different from the normal K series starter. The ends were bored out and he fitted needle bearings on the starter shaft. He claimed it would free wheel better and didn't give so many false starts in the cold. Yearly he would scrape a graphite bar over the Bendix spline. The ring gear had been painted in some sort of marine graphite paint. It always turned very quiet compared to most K engines. The stuff has held up for years. The gears show next to no wear. But anyway, another vote for graphite.
-
4 pointsThis practice can lead to starter damage. It would surprise you to know how minor of a tap-tap can knock the outer magnets loose in the starter motor.
-
4 pointsSince you got it Why not. I have cleaned the drive area with brake cleaner and used powdered graphite with success.

4 pointsWent back to September of 2018 to get this one. Freshly restored Pony tractor horse. Boy, this house was every kind of ugly and then some.... Here's what the back looks like now but from a different angle. And here's Cinnamon Horse with a big big plow.

4 pointsI went way out of my way (about 40 miles) one time, a LONG time ago to help a fellow human out. He thanked me profusely, offered to pay, I said no, we parted with a handshake. When I got home I saw his jacket in the back seat. I only knew him as "Scott". No ID at all in the jacket, but there was a wad of cash, about $150 bucks. There was no way I was gonna ever find him again to give his cash back and I wondered if he did it intentionally. Another time I picked up a hitch hiker in Ohio, drove him all the way to NJ, dropped him at the train station in Edison. He said his name was "Dick". This was around 1971-1972 or so (maybe even earlier) Other than 'small talk' about him being in a band and what not, I didn't know who he was. Later that year I found out when I went to a J Geils Band concert... there he was on stage. None other than the "Magic Dick":

4 pointsFrankly, to me this thing is a great success with, as Dennis pointed out, the usual discoveries of a prototype. Period. Contrast this endeavor with one where a lot of ideas get down on paper but nothing gets built and so no one ever knows if any of the ideas would have worked out or why they didn't work! It's prompted me to think about other ways to put 18hp through independent hydro transmissions and made me do the math on universal joints used in unexpected ways. I doubt I would have thought much about the transmission of power as a limiting factor, that's for sure. Thank you, sir, for inviting us all to come along for the ride.

4 pointsBack in 1974 pocket calculators were getting popular but pricey. I bought one at the China Fleet Club Hong Kong with a couple other things. The very nice Chinese sales clerk whipped out her abacus to figure the total...Did it faster than you could on the calculator..
-
4 pointsGears should never be changed while the tractor is in motion. Here is a cut from my 8-speed owners manual
-
4 pointsMy C-141 has separate pedals also . It is a little hard to get used to, specially when my other 12 tractors have only one pedal for the clutch/brake.

4 pointsThese are often WAY more trouble than they are worth. Everyone wants to strut their knowledge and sometimes when an unknowing person places an ad on Craigslist or locally, a do-gooder who is TOO far away feels obligated to contact the seller "helping" them and educating them on what they "really" have. Years ago, a moderator here was striking a deal on buying 2 seniors. They came to an agreement to purchase, but a "do gooder" from THIS site, stepped in and educated the seller what they had. The do-gooder had NO way to get these, nor even want them. Their only intention was to show off their knowledge to the seller. Bottom line, the moderator was only able to purchase one of those tractors as the seller instantly jacked the price for both basically screwing the moderator out of the purchase. There are also countless other examples where there was SUCH a great deal, and a member was in contact to purchase, but someone else comes in with cash first and swipes the machine away. What happens in all of these scenario's is people want, and expect RedSquare admins and moderators to flag people, ban them, report them or some other disciplinary action. Maybe you've done it too, you see an ad for someone saying "for sale old wheel horse wagon $50 obo, must pick up Washington State". Maybe you're not interested in the 4 wheel wagon or it's too far away, but you are tempted to send a note "Hey, wanted to let you know, that wagon is a collectable and you can get $400 for that". Meanwhile our member from Washington was on their way to pick it up, and the gentlemen's agreement is no longer honored. On the opposite spectrum, there have been posts here saying "check out this POS the idiot is looking for $7000 saying it's a collectible". Well, here too this has happened and the seller a member here, not really appreciating the publicity given to his sale. Finally, when posted in the forums, these ads stick around FAR longer than the sale does. The original re-poster never ever comes back to say, hey this was sold, because they have no idea if it was, and it stays out there for ever. This is of no benefit to the members here and cleaning it up falls on the moderators. I appreciate the desire to help folks out, but remember "no good deed goes unpunished".

4 pointsOK, I removed the bandage this morning. I was quite pleased with the results. The wax paper peeled off with no problem. There was one small lump where the JB had squeezed out from under the rubber pressure pad. This was easily sanded off. I was surprised how flexible the JB . I don't think that will be a problem especially in this area where there is no flexing or stretching of the vinyl. It may not work in the middle of a seat. The rubber pad actually left it's pattern thru the wax paper into the epoxy. The WD-40 really seemed to restore the life to the vinyl.

4 pointsI let my 4 mechanics and body shop guys 'apprentice across enemy lines' all the time, and encourage them to learn as much as they can, inside and outside their normal skill set. Instead of worrying about them taking over, I hope one day they do and then fire me, so I can go do something I enjoy like I once did here

4 pointsEric. Thsts a very profound and heart warming post right there. So easy to take life for granted and not be thankful for all the wonderful things we have. A friend was asking me about how much pension I draw and if I could manage not taking another job etc. She was trying to plan for her husbands retirement in a couple of years. I reminded her of our good friend Steve who had been planning his own retirement in a similar way when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I know he would rather be here and penniless than where he is now. Its good to have plans and think of the future, but not at the expense of today. Take time to enjoy every day, not just slave towards a future that might not come. We don't have tons of cash in the bank, but we live in a lovely house, have a loving relationship and enjoy something every day, whether that's coffee together or a walk with the dogs. I don't need anything more than I have so I don't sweat about it. Mick

4 pointsAnd acute eyesight! Was taking in an exhibit of old calculating equipment at the London Technology Museum a few years back when a teacher brought in a bunch of high school kids. There was a 3-foot long slide rule mounted on the wall and I suggested the teacher show the students how it worked. She had no idea and asked if I could. So I did some simple multiplication and division and it had the square scale so we did roots. Several of the kids clicked right away on how the physical tool was an expression of abstract ideas. Hope I planted a couple of seeds that day.

3 pointsI have a side walk right next to a state highway. If we get 6" of snow there is at least 12" on the side walk. A foot then there's 2 feet. Gotta use the blower. I also like the sound of the Kohler whilst looking at the rooster tail!

3 pointsThis true - but mainly links. But, it seems like the reason why we don't allow links to ads, auctions, etc. would apply here. Giving too much information can lead to someone swooping in and "stealing" the item when another member has arrangements in place to buy it. Personally I would rather not see these things on RS, it reeks of getting around a rule in place, and I would rather see it avoided here. Though not technically against the rules, why push the envelope? Just my 2 cents here.

3 pointsIf you put a rubber edge underneath it would just bring more rocks up for your blower to digest. 98% of what I clear is gravel rock or grass. Keep the blower set somewhat high then go back wit a plow to clean up.
