20 pointsA friend came by last Saturday and said that he found something that belongs to one of the tractors that I bought from him a couple years ago.!
-
11 pointsBack in my younger days I was out on surgery and sitting home doing nothing. I decided to visit a member (who doesn't post much) in PA an pick up a couple of custom parts and tour his collection. He was grateful for the visit as he's kinda in the boonies. One of his tractors had the lighter and I mentioned mine was missing from the Skonkmobile. He says I'll make you one. We go into his shop and grabs a lighter element body new in a package. Grabs a hunk of steel and fires up the lathe!

9 pointsThere is probably a capacitor in the counter somewhere that is still powering it. Might be a feature to prevent the count from being lost when the battery is removed.

7 pointsPraying you all don't get it bad. Just remember if you use a generator, wire it correctly so there is no backfeed, protect those lineman that are working very hard in bad conditions to get you back on line. Also the fumes from those generators, we all know what it can do. Stay safe and try to be patient with those lineworkers, I have been there and they are working very hard and many of them won't have power at home either.Stay safe and work together. 7 pointsDidn’t do anything with the tractors today, but I wrapped up a ‘restored’ Wheel Horse lantern to go along with the patina one. Not really tractor related but figured you guys might dig it.

6 pointsWe've been having a really cold few days and the ground is well frozen. So today I returned to a tree I'd felled about 3 weeks ago. The ground was soft and rough, making it a bit dodgy working the day I felled it. Plus I only just managed to drive the Sears and loaded trailer out. Today was ideal so off I went and set too. I got a nice load on the trailer and was just about to cut up some more, when the chainsaw stopped. After 13 years work it decided to lose compression. Back home I decided to go buy another saw while the dead on was investigated. If it's fixable having two saws will be handy. Also I want to get as much of the wood out of the field before it thaws again. That's my excuse anyway. Hoping to get it all cut up and home tomorrow. just to prove to certain people, you know who you are, who complain when no photo's, here's some. Sears and Saxon. I think I need a hair cut. Carol came out to lend a hand. In reality she just wanted a photo' to send her sister in Wales.

6 pointsMayonnaise Randy !! Holding that gorgeous lighter really makes your fingers look like you have been stabing them with and ice pick. I suggest getting a manicure and some Vaseline Intensive Care immediately. Winter can be the worst months for hands. Might want to use some J B Weld on those finger nails also. BTW...nice lighter.

6 points@ebinmaine @WVHillbilly520H @roadapples @JAinVA @RandyLittrell Thanks for the insights and suggestions. The front spindles on the hub side are deeply grooved but the axle spindle is in very good shape. The 6" tires need replacement, so its best to upgrade to 8" wheels and tires. This tractor rebuild is a gift to my grandson and I want everything in excellent working order. No short cuts, no junk. It will not have a FEL. So, what does it cost to change over to 8" wheels from 6" wheels? To replace the long spindles with new short spindles, used 8" wheels and new bearings is $196. To replace with used front short spindles, used rims and new bearings is $155. To replace with a used 520h axle and related steering components and used 8" wheels is over $350. I belong to Northern Tool club and they offer free shipping, discounts on list price and have a $20 discount on orders over $100. The price of new trailer hubs and 1" spindles delivered is $98. Add another $43 for new wheels delivered so for $141, I can get all new trailer hubs, new spindles, tapered bearings , heavier components, warranty, and no grinding of rusty parts. I understand the need for buying used parts, but sometimes, new and improved components can be far cheaper and better built. I plan on welding gussets to the existing spindles to improve strength. My two cents! @peter lena Thanks to @ebinmaine about scrub radius and @RandyLittrell and @JAinVA about bearing issues and wheel offset. I will purchase wheels with zero offset rather than negative offset. This is a great forum for the exchange of ideas, information and practices. Many thanks to all!😊

6 pointsHere in UK , wheelhorses go back to RJ58s although there are not many here . I have owned a few early round hood models RJ58 suburban 701 854 704 I managed to find this little guy a few years ago ,it came with deck and front and rear plough

5 pointsBe cheaper faster to make one. it is nothing special. Cereal box or some gasket paper
-
5 pointsYes there is a gasket there Craig. Bigger question is did the screws get ingested by the engine?

5 pointsThe other day I mentioned that I thought my plow needed a better lift mechanism. So yesterday I commenced to making one. It's not very sophisticated, and it aint purdy, but t works. Switch on the dash raises and lowers plow. Micro switches limit travel up and down. Goes up and down in about a second. If I can ever find the switch I want, I have another plan, but apparently it is a very elusive switch. In line with keeping it Red Green compliant, I cut off the cardboard tube some, filled it with ice melting salt, and taped the caps on with duct tape. When (and if) my new hood ever gets here from Lincoln, this will all have to be revamped. But that might wait a while. Now. I don't have anything to do again.

5 pointsOne other fun fact about top fuel drag cars. The engine only makes about 900 revolutions under load before it is rebuilt again. This includes the burn out to get the tires warm.
-
5 pointsSecond power outage in two days so worked the tractor instead of the database. Bad transformer up the road. I had a bear of a time moving the wires around for clean appearance and staying away from hot parts. Not knowing the original design is no help. Added the fuel line and a new filter. Used the old fashioned siphon method to prime it through the filter and swallowed no gas. All good so far. She fired and kept running after just a couple of squirts of cleaner so the pump is good. I had to adjust the idle and idle mix and she's just perfect. No hunting any more - must have been those eBay gaskets - I had sorted the intake and carb. The 48" deck went on and we tooled around the yard, engine screaming. She's a keeper and the 516 is pretty simple. May restore her before the 520 but that big H is aching for a strip down and the bench is sitting empty. I'll get pics on here and maybe a video, I promise.

4 pointsEven though I'm on disability, my friend Kevin who I worked with for 20+ years has his own glass company and calls my now and then to help him with 2 man sets or older stuff. We put glass in a 79 Ford today that I thought you guys might like. The guys has another one just like it outside that's a crew cab and some other pretty cool toys in his shop. He had some good looking Bulldogs too.

4 pointsAll staged for her sister. I had to lift it out of the trailer for her and place it on her arms. Can't wait to tell her sister when we can get down to Wales.
-
4 pointsOK, I made a video but I'm too embarrassed to post it. Hey, not my style. I can post a couple of pics, though, to fulfill my promise! Very early P216 - no oil filter and the heavier rings... The only thing I don't like about the Onan is that the governor setting can only be too responsive or not responsive enough. I use the former so it jumps and then settles. I guess it's just not a Kohler.

4 pointsWe keep getting a little more accumulation every day here...things started freezing up Sunday, and with next Friday being the first day above freezing in the forecast it doesn’t look like relief is in sight for a while. Stay safe over there. Ice storms can be nasty, we went through one about 4 years ago that was the worst I remember around here. On a side note, though it causes problems and wreaks havoc on the roads and power grids, it does make a beautiful sight when you walk outside. Took this picture of the old Case this morning before heading to work

4 pointsFunny story about frozen locks... I took my wife to an indoor shooting range in December one year. Super cold out. New truck (new to me). We had a backpack full of pistols and ammo. Both of us are licensed to concealed carry and this was early in our licensed days. We left the range after our allotted time, still with plenty of ammo. Frozen door locks and the fob battery died. We ended up walking across a very busy street, to a Meier store, got a new fob battery and some lock de-icer. Ammo bouncing all brassy in my pack. Completely legal we were, but such a funny feeling carrying that much fire power through the store! By the time we got back to the truck, the sun came out and the keys were able to unlock the doors!

3 pointsI know a guy was helping my friend with setting up and area for a prefabbed pavilion. My friend has a 520 with a FEL on it and the helper commented at the beginning of the job "glorified wheel barrow." Oh....I told him they will do some work and are handy. I stopped by later and there he was in the seat grading and leveling the area! Original plan was to use walk behind tiller and rake. I had to ask what are you doing? He said hey this thing is not to bad! I just laughed. I know if the ground is not hard and I can get a toe hold in the ground, I have dug up the ground. I have a friend that has a track hoe and excavation company that does any serious stuff. Having spent most of my career maintaining mining equipment. I have found most of the failures are operator induced. Like jerking on a winch rope. Undersized for the job type of things, or lifting to much. I am guilty too. I had a 416-8 on the forks and came around the building, bounced and kinked the bucket. I guess know what the jobs are you like doing before you build might be the best advice. (and of course there is the budget)
-
3 pointsFunny how such a simple thing brings so much joy! Believe it or not, I’ve only ever used a cigarette lighter in a vehicle to check if it was hot enough to singe my fingerprints off... or try to light paper on fire!
-
3 pointsI hope the pictures will post. Here are a few of the tractor in question. And it DOES look like it is a 701. And a different friend that has seen it says it has two belts on the starter/generator!

3 pointsSTEEL, 1/4" fuel line size , good opportunity to also replace the tank shut off valve , that way in addition to use that as your drainage point , you can totally replace any possible points of issue at the same time . personally like the FUEL RATED clear line , I also enhanced the routing and mounting points for chafe/ binding areas. when you replace the tank valve , use silicone grease on the valve to grommet area for easier installation , that valve is cheap , about $ 6 , on line . also installed a facet style pump on mine , in the front of engine area , no noise , no issues. good idea with any issue you have is to do a complete job , if you don't ,chances are some related spot will also fail . lots of related fittings are rated 1/4" x 5/16" as fuel line can expand . pete

3 pointsGet some roller chain on those front tires... you’ll have all kinds of steering traction for that snow plow!
-
3 pointsGo to the thrift store and buy a measuring cup, better than lumps on your head when the wife finds out you used hers! @twodogs Sounds like you have been doing the right things to keep up with maintenance. I have replaced the old fuel pumps with electric pumps mounted lower than the fuel tank and eliminated hard starting problems. All fuel pumps are much better at pushing liquids up hill than they are at developing a vacuum on a half empty fuel line.
