Digging through a lot of picture lately and come across one I haven't seen for awhile and thought I would share. It's a Case VAC next to a 54 Chevy truck. Thats my Dad sitting on the fender with his Brother on the other side along with my Grandpa and Great Grandpa. I have a VAC and hope I can recreate a four generation pic on of these days when I get it done. Wish I owned a 54 or 55 first edition Chevy too!! Randy

This is my first Scrap Metal motocycle. I always enjoy a title that draws my attention to an interesting article. I hope this one doesn't disappoint. Finding a use for my scrap metal, my "chopper" was fun to build and a challenge. A hobby in itself, examples can be found on google images and for sale on many market sites. Now I wander a little off topic. I display my "chopper" on the garage wall along with license plates, hub caps and photos. Some photos are of the first funny cars circa the 1960s at Thompson Drag Strip near Cleveland. At that track the Faronni Bros. won a record 208mph but fame went to Don Garlits who earlier broke the 200mph barrier elsewhere.Today my 73 Camaro I bought new would be worth a fortune, had I kept it. Today, some pick up trucks start at $70k, my 74 GMC had a sticker price of around $4500. I grew up on Wheel Horses and here I am on my first one after leaving the nest in the 1970s

After spending so much time making the front axle I really didnt want to cut it. But, for the greater good I did. Ugh!. Some drilling and tapping and the first side will be done.

Geez, I would never park next to Bear. His fine machines stand above all. Next to his, my wheel stander would be invisible, all eyes would be on his. But this is not to discouage anyone, I enjoy the hobby. Instead, I pay homage to all the owners and their great tractors here on RedSquare

My son preorder this table last year about this time. Well with COVID and all things slowed down things took longer tha it should’ve but he’s finally up and running. He had to teach himself autodesk fusion 360 (things have changed since I used to use auto cad 12 ) but learned more with each project. Some of you may have seen them on a different thread. Working on the next sign . . Will be looking for feed back or tips or tricks with anyone familiar with 360 . I know he can use pdx files too ?

I agree, of the some 80-100 tractors/small engines I have owned I cannot recall a single one that had to have at least a little choke when cold, In fact many ... most? need a bit of ..... finesse? with the choke, you know, close one eye, cross your fingers, raise one leg, etc, etc. My kids could never start an engine because they didnt know Pops ... ritual!

Depending on what type of bits they are and how they are used I keep them in many different ways and places. I have literarily several hundreds of different type bits. For small bits up to 1/2” it’s always best to have some type of an index case. Masonry bits are kept in hammer drill box except for spare stock. Hole saws are usually in their own box since they are always needed outside of shop. Here are some of the ways they are stored here.

Most of my work is done at the bench, and any drill bit up to 3/16” is used mostly for pilot or clearance holes to drive screws. My go to tool all the time is a vintage push drill. It is compact and extremely efficient. Bits are stored right in it and are quickly removed and replaced. Bits 1/16” and smaller are also much sturdier than a regular twist version. it’s a relatively unknown tool that can still be cheaply obtained found thrown into piles of hardware and bits at many flea markets.

Well I have to say I’m really enjoying my Milwaukee M12 tools. I just bought a M12 3/8 Fuel impact and couldn’t be happier. This thing is awesome! Next is a M12 3/8 fuel ratchet provided my wife doesn’t throw me out! Seriously these tools are making air tools prehistoric. Makes working on the Horses a bit more enjoyable!😉

No fancy drills here: I do know some people here, that take a thick wood board, and drill a hole for every size they have, they hanged then up next to the drill press Like This:

I find it's best to just buy one of each and as many attachment as you can find!

Spent some time yesterday organizing the basement workshop to make it more ergonomically friendly. We had brought the big drill press in from the outdoor workshop a few weeks ago. I moved most all the contents of the desk top to places that are more practical and within reach of their usage. I. E. Drills with the drill. Nuts and bolts consolidated. Paint to the corner where it's better stored. Also moved the electric wall around a little.

The brakes on a are on the transmission and will apply the greatest amount of stopping force to the tire with the least traction. The differential will be your friend while going around a corner but become your nemesis when stopping in less than ideal conditions. Many of us have been pushed down a hill by a loaded trailer. My opinion for the best tractor for snow removal, rototilling, mowing and moving reasonable loads would be a 312-8. The are plentiful, dependable and darn near bulletproof. If you can find a package deal that has most of what you are looking for you can save a lot of time and money.

Get you a drill index for up to 1/2" , here's one loaded https://www.harborfreight.com/high-speed-steel-drill-bit-set-with-index-115-pc-61620.html, plus for the price with bits you can use those for sharpening practice. Now above 1/2" they stay in the bit drawer of the tool box and if they came in a plastic tube they stay in those... While in the machine shop my mentor would drill a hole in the tap set box and keep his tap drill with the correct set wouldn't have to check the chart and look for it.

What ever works...works. It's easy to go overboard on such things. I almost didnt make any chain guards. You get looking around on line long enough you will find alot of interesting stuff....even stuff not so interesting

The steering shaft is held in place by that lock collar below the bushing. Remove the set screw in the collar and start spraying penetrant in the hole. Take a dremel or a drill with a wire brush and clean the steering shaft, collar, etc above and below the bushing. With the shaft clean tap that lock collar down a little, up a little, repeat. You may need to cut a piece of wood to block the steering shaft up from the floor to get a firm tap/ hit on the collar. But don't pound it or you could accidently break the steering gear. Your a step ahead of me as, I never go my steering wheel off. The metal steering bushing had egged/wallowed the hole out where it goes through the sheetmetal. I cleaned it all up shinny and scratched it with coarse sand paper. Then I used the JB Weld dough in a stick and glued it in place with a nice thick fillet of the dough. it's still holding about 5 years later. To repair that steering bushing since you have the wheel off, some on here have bought a flanged ball bearing off ebay, and bolted to the sheetmetal , then lock it to the steering shaft. Hopefully someone, who has done that will jump in here with a flange bearing part number. You could also get a brass or steel flanged bushing from those gray Hillman draws at you local hardware store. You also could replace the plastic bushings on those two other shafts with brass bushings. I restored a 312-8 for my son when he bought his first house. He loves it. Vinylguys patriotic Decals really look good on it.

Yes you need a Wheel Horse with a mid-mount grader blade, that would be perfect to grade your track.

Those are actually a little easier since most are 1/2” shanks. I use lots of removable sliding trays to maximize wasted space in drawers.

If you're planning in using a tiller, an 8 speed works much better than a hydro. Just a heads up...

I'll second the Milwaukee tools. I happen to have the M18 tools. 1/2 in hammer drill, 3/8 impact drill, SDS hammer drill, grinder, sawzall, hackzall, 16 gauge pin nailer, 6 1/2 circular saw, and a bunch of batteries. Cordless is the way to go, not having to worry about power or air close by is a huge plus. Batteries even hold up well even in the coldest weather.

I like the ideas you're throwing out there quite a bit but are you seriously stating that you could potentially have too much light?? Silly. That's just silly. When folks 6 towns over are calling then maybe........
