5 pointsHi, I'm John and I'm new to Wheelhorse tractors. I do not own one YET. A buddy of mine just gave me an old mower with a snow blade on the front to use to keep my rc track smooth and push snow on the few occasions with get a big snow here. He told me it was red and the name started with a T but he couldn't remember exactly. After a google search I figured it had to be either a Troy-Bilt or a Toro Wheelhorse. Well it turned out to be a Troy-Bilt Pony with a blade on the front and no deck. Should work great for what I need after a little carb work and a couple belts. And it was FREE! SCORE! But it got me thinking, a real garden tractor would be real handy around here. I don't have 10 grand laying around to buy a new one and these old Wheelhorses look really cool. Now to figure out which model and hunt one down. I'll post a new thread soon with questions and all I intend to use it for.

5 pointsGreat looking tractor!! It kind of looks like that amp meter was added on. Normally a factory one would mount flush into the dash stand. I'm not sure if mine had an amp meter from the factory but it did have one when I purchased it. I choose to get rid of the amp meter and replace it with a volt meter. I really like my Raider 12, it makes a great plow mule. I prefer having the old style stirrups over the newer running board foot rests so I did switch them out on mine.

3 pointsEverybody has their favorites, i guess, so put yours down and why you like them. some of it is personality, and that can get in the way of knowledge. The top guys that I know of are Steve, Taryl, Doublewide6, Mick's mowers,Bruces garage, Mustie1, and a few others i may have forgotten. These are not necessarily my favorites, but maybe you guys can say which are your favorites and why. What i find important considerations are , in no particular order of importance, are camera work [so you can see and understand what is happening] sound quality, variety [showing the same stuff over and over] brevity [ in some cases] editing [using the speed it up function so we need not see tightening 16 bolts]. lighting [ so we can see, period] Now i am gonna mention one guy in particular and that is Donnyboy. He was on a chat with Steve's small engine saloon, and I always thought he was a bit serious, but did know his equipment. There is a good reason that he is serious as he has to stay very close to home all the time because his wife has a serious health condition that requires he do so. Even though he knew of her condition before their marriage, I am thinking that he is going to be one guy that i subscribe to and hit that like button on a consistent basis just to help his revenue stream. Maybe you might wish wish to do the same.

3 pointsHey guys, I need advice on how to continue on a refurbishing a 1991, 312-h, model 5112KE01 for my grandson. I have a 1989, 414-8 that I restored and this is my first experience with a hydro and a tractor that is in much worse shape then mine was. I need some help. My grandson brought his first house and as a gift, I told him I would buy him any tractor he wanted at his local big box store such as JD, Husky, Craftsman etc. He said what he really wanted was a wheel horse like mine! He really likes that old iron. Great! So I went shopping for a WH and unfortunately, a lot of them are really beat and abused. I found this 312-h in decent shape, 750 hours? if meter works, and will strip it down and refurbish the tractor like new or better. My grandson is in the air national guard reserve and will deploy to the middle east next month for his third tour of combat duty. I plan on getting the tractor ready for him when he returns three months later. Working in my garage, and its cold in upstate NY, I can't paint until warmer weather, but want to do all the mechanical's now. Although we are separated by 500 miles, this refurbished tractor should last him long after I am gone. Its a good keepsake and passes the love of Wheel Horse Tractors to another generation. I changed the engine and transmission oil, new filters for air and trans, new choke cable and fixed assorted wiring issues. The engine does not smoke, starts right up, and the transmission, hydro, and engine do not leak oil, and all operate as should. At this point, I feel comfortable that the engine and hydro are good and can proceed with the mechanicals. The PO or PO's did a lot of half ass repairs or quick stuff, so going thru making everything correct. I am stuck on a few things and need your help. 1. How do you remove the choke cable from the console? My 414-8 had a plastic tab that just pulled off, I cant do that with this. Please see pictures. 2. I removed the front steering components, the ball joints and tie rods are shot. Many good posts from Members on upgrading with after market parts. Shout out to ebinmaine about drilling out the egg shape 3/8" hole to 7/16". This will clean up a lot of steering slop. Removed the front axle and the Pin and Plate is broken. Will replace. See picture. 3. The PO, or multiple PO's , hacked up the wiring and with help from peter lena, 953 nut, and handy Don, I got the electrical system back in working order, except for the idiot lights. 4. Trying to improve the terrible sloppy steering it has. Please refer to the picture of the flanged bearing on the lower steering shaft, how do you replace this? Is it pressed on the shaft? How do you remove the lower steering shaft? 5. I have a problem removing the sheet metal tower. I have no experience in removing the lift lever or the motion control lever. Without removing these two levers, I can't remove the sheet metal console? see picture. How do I proceed? 5. I removed the steering wheel, but I don't understand how to get the steering column out of the console. The bearing for the upper steering shaft is very loose and needs replacement. How do I proceed? see picture. 6. The linkage for the motion control lever is really sloppy. I cleaned up and adjusted the rods and the cam plate, so its much better, but there seems to be excessive play in the rod ends. See picture. Are these 1/4 x28 rod ends? Any thing I should look out for? 7. There is a handle on the shift cover plate, that when pulled back and up, disengages the transmission when cold starting. This rattles excessively. Replacement for idler pulley and spring needed? 8. How to remove the PTO clutch lever? I can see a cotter pin but don't have access to remove it? The trunnion was rusted solid on the PTO clutch rod and the PTO plate would not move. Freed both but need to remove the PTO clutch lever due to excessive play in the housing. I know this is a long list, but only I can only work on the 312-h on weekends, so much to do in a short time. And I know I will be back with more questions. I greatly appreciate any help! Thanks, David

3 pointsI was able to partially disassemble it, but I'm no artist. I would like to find a Wheel Horse Logo decal, about 1" square. I contacted Terry, but he doesn't seem to have anything.

3 pointsAm picking up a new horse hauler tomorrow if everything checks out. I absolutely hate towing my 4x6 trailer with my brand new jetta, i baby everything and even though it handles it no problem i just hate pulling more than 300 lbs with it being a 6 speed manual with almost no miles on it. So im headed southbound 65 miles in the flatbed to pick up a 96 ram 3500 4x4 with only 87k miles. My last v10 is still strong at 550k according to the current owner, i let it go with a bad clutch at 275k. I think this one should be able to handle at least 1 tractor in the bed 😂

3 pointsTo my knowledge there are no hard rubber tires to fit your application. You could have your front tires filled with foam. They would never go flat plus it would add weight for better traction.
-
3 pointsThe best I can think up is something along the lines of a Waterloo Bronco. Size wise.. Still some differences though. I'll check my old Wendells book after work, unless someone comes up with anything else. Right down to the forked tie rod ends facing straight out over the front.
-
3 pointsThat flat front framework is nothing like a Gibson, Pond, Speedex.. Sorta reminds me of a Doylestown Atomic Babe.. as crazy as that name sounds. But it looks much too big, and I think they were English. I've never seen anything quite that big.. I seem to remember an Ottawa that had tall wheels, but those were twin Wisocnsin's, not a single.

3 pointsIn 1990 the 520-8 did not have the chrome hubcaps, chrome air cleaner cover, muffler guard & dipstick tube. Also no tach, vacuum gauge or hydraulic temp light . This is according to the bulletin # 060789.

3 points@Oldskool it looks great. Are you first try a testdrive or a Paintjob? think i would prefer the Testdrive before some Paint will be on this built. But however, i also be Curious about the Colorscheme you choosen.

3 pointsMade up some brackets to hold some red marker lights and wired them up to the light switch so they are on with the headlights. Was going to change my rear reflectors but the lights i ordered were too small to use the rivet holes so went to plan B.. The one on the battery should give a cool red glow under the hood without being directly visible. Both will add to the visibly of the tractor at night which was the goal and no change to anything from the factory (wiring/drilling)

3 pointsYes it should work fine. Small engines really don't need a lot of current. You say you are replacing an original solenoid. Are the wires original too? Old wires will drop voltage and drive cranking amps up. Replace them too.
