9 pointsHello everyone. I inherited this 704 and have started to restore it. I have been lurking a lot on the forum but I got it running the other day. So far I have changed crankcase oil, gear oil. Cleaned combustion chamber. Filed down the exhaust valve, adjusted the points, cleaned the carb and changed the spark plug. New gaskets everywhere too. Im not sure if that made any difference or if it was just the spark plug that got it running. As accessories I have a mower 36 in mower 5-2362 Unknown harrow Unknown plow Unknown snow plow Just wanted to share. Best regards, Robin.

4 pointsShould work. If too long cut a bit off the tube. Too short and will not lift high enough add 3/4" SAE flat washers to the flag before it is inserted into the tube. When this lift system was introduced they would not lift high enough. A service bulletin said to add the 3/4" SAE flat washers and each 1/8" washer would change the height 1/2". That should hold true for all of them. Garry

4 pointsRemember the good old days when we could hot-wire and break into anything. No power windows or door locks and we could out think anything the stupid vehicle through at us?

4 pointsHe probably booked a room with a view of the Landscaper's Shed so he could see the wall full of yank-start weed trimmers!!

4 pointsI'm feeling warm and fuzzy with all this black hood love, my favorite vintage for sure. A C-165 is pretty much top of my list right now for wanted tractors, kind of leaning towards trying to find an 8-speed as all my others are hydro so it would be nice to change it up. That's a good looking machine ya got there, it will make a fine addition to your fleet.

4 pointsI have used mine for 5 years and totally agree with Bob. Mine came on a 312H auction tractor and I was sceptical, but I thought I'll try them before replacing them with steel. I had become accustomed to only plowing my steep paved drive downhill and dead heading back up through the grass as the 2 link Vee Bar chains would not climb up the bare drive without spinning. Steel on bare asphalt has no traction. With the rubber chains, I could easily plow down with a full blade and plow up with a half blade. They work well on a paved drive on loose snow and are better than steel on a drive that has been scraped bare. I see no difference in ride between 4 link rubber and 4 link steel. During this last 12" heavy snow, I used the 312 w/ rubber chains to push is way up out of my basement garage where it is stored. This is on a grass surface. the 312H did not spin while pushing the 54" blade uphill through the 12" heavy snow. It did run out of power and bogged down the engine. I still use the 2 link Vee Bar steel on the 520H for the stone roads and grassy trails. It us unstoppable and never runs out of power. PS Craig, you have seen the areas I plow, you be the judge.

4 pointsCraig @AMC RULES, I'm glad to see that "Steve on a Stick" is social distancing and wearing his mask! PS, nice tool box!

4 pointsI've used 2 link steel chains for years But didn't want to on the long asphalt at this house. Last winter was the first test but wasn't a good one because we really didn't have much snow. A couple weeks ago I was clearing new paths through two sections of woods and I was very impressed with the traction. I was pushing stumps and quite a bit of dirt. Personally I don't see where they are as rough riding as steel. If I run down the paved drive I don't feel them as much as did with 4 link steel. 2 link steel are not as choppy as 4 link I guess because they ride from link to link. I was hard sell but I feel the rubber are well worth the expense and a must have if you want to protect the payment.

3 pointsI added some supports to my rear suitcase weight bracket today. Until now all the weight was hanging from the receiver hitch. When I built the subframe I drilled a pair of holes at the rear in prep for this and just never got around to it. I bent up some 3/16 x 1 1/2” flat bar. I put a jack under the weight rack to lift it up when drilling the holes in the braces and the rack. In my mind that would maximize the amount of weight the braces/subframe would support and minimize the amount of weight on the hitch. It seemed to work. When everything was reassembled the rack was no longer resting in the bottom of the 2” receiver.

3 pointsI bought the same thing, but in black. Can't wait to get it on! Randy

3 pointsI never had a hydro for snow plowing until I got my 416-H. I always plowed with my B-100 8-speed. I thought it was the best and I would put it up against any hydro...and then I tried plowing with the 416-H. I'll never go back to an 8-speed

3 pointsPicked up a C165 today. I can’t resist a 16hp Kohler especially when it’s mated to an Eaton 11. Also came with a 48” deck. It will need the basics to get it running, but the engine is free, and the rear seems good to go. Thank goodness I have a wife who “gets it”. This makes 10 Wheel Horses in my barn, the only bad thing is I’m out of room now! My Black Hood collection is taking shape. I’ll have this one running in the next couple weeks, and hopefully ready for mowing duty in the spring. I haven’t decided if I’m going go full out or just get the mechanicals in good working order and use as is, paint wise. Sorry should have taken a couple better pictures. I didn’t get the number off the tag, I’ll have to get that tomorrow. Heath

3 pointsOnly reason I would do that is if I couldn't book the landscaper shed itself
-
3 pointsReally needs a video but here's some after shots and my witness saw the whole thing! I should add that I'd forgotten how much I dislike 4-link chains! I couldn't find all my chains so I quickly through on what I could find and then a bungie. I'll find my 2-links or perhaps add links to these soon.

3 pointsJust a little tip. No matter whether you end up painting or coating the wheels, when mounting the tire, insert the back side of the wheel into the tire first so that when you insert the tire irons to get the bead over the rim, you will be working at the rear of the tire, and not touching the freshly painted/coated front side of the wheel.

3 points20201223_071152.mp4 After initially flooding it, it took off. I had o take the air cleaner off. I couldn't remember which way was choke on / off. For the record, it has an arrow.Ran a little rough at first, but with some fiddling on the carb settings, it smoothed right out. I am going to have to get that starter figured out, or get a new one. My 1/2" corded Makita drill has a hard time turning it, and there is no way I could pull start this thing very often.
-
3 pointsDoes this mean that you're going to buy a black hood and turn it into a "plow mule" or are you saying that I need to??? Either way works for me.
-
3 pointsArmor all the seat! That’s the only way, I see to get a seat to stay like new, and soft!
-
3 pointsSideways traction isn't good, if you have a tilt to the driveway, use with caution. The ride is rough, they are best used with the rounded 2 ply tires. Steel chains are better all around, but I will never go back because of driveway damage.
