Since the purchase of this tractor almost a year ago, I've done several maintenance items that were long overdue. Plus added and replaced a few things that had some issues. The governor was messed up causing power issues. Then the ACR was not working which caused the motor to eat two starters. When taking the front end a part, the gas tank had been damaged from over tightening the mounting band. So had a great guy build a custom tank that is awesome. Other updates included 1970 grille, new carburetor, custom name plate, dual tombstone weight bracket, and a few others I'm sure to forget. Now was able to get the duals on which are extremely heavy. Therefore, won't stay on very long. Plus, original tires are slightly shorter than the new ones even though they are exactly same. The paint wasn't matched very well so will have to do some arrangements on making the new set inside and originals the outside duals. Having center caps made by a great machinist. Still my favorite tractor in the stable. Hope you all enjoy.

Last night, I found out my 17 year old Brother In Law signed papers last week to become a United States Marine. He is going into his senior year of high school, then off to boot camp immediately following. I’ve known him since he was 4 and he’s been practicing his sniping in the yard since at least then! This week he is taking his physical, then needs to run 3 miles in 28 minutes. He’s currently at 24 minutes and trains daily between football (he’s the starting QB) and the gym. Blaze Adam Sensiba, with a proud year in my eye and a lump in my throat I love you man and am proud of you!

I have a old friend who worked at the local Goodyear retread plant here in my town. I asked what his job was and he said he was a tire painter. I asked what the big guys use to paint tires and he told me that is is just black latex paint. Below is a set of tires painted with a mixture of Behr exterior latex satin paint (color Baluga), mixed 50/50 with water and applied with an HVLP gun.

I have been using M E Miller tire paint for years on older tires on my Wheel Horse tires. I am very pleased with the outcome on very old tires.

Well....my son made me get more tractors today! Lol These were put to rest in the woods and were a royal pain to get them to our trailer. They are pretty rough but the decks seem good. They may turn out to be donor tractors. At very least we saved them from the crusher.

Super excited to have joined the WH owners club. Have a new to me 1997 Toro/WH 314h that came with a 42" deck and leaf catcher. I just picked up a single stage short chute snow thrower that needs a tiny bit of TLC but should be very handy here in MI. I apologize for the probably offensive addition of the Bolens wheel weights but since I had the rusty pair it seemed a no brainer to clean them up and paint them red to go with the ag tires. I can't say enough how impressed I am with the quality of materials and more importantly how well thought out this tractor is. Thx in advance for the community support. Bill

Looks like @19richie66 & son work there! Always glad to see pics of that beast! She is a real show stopper!

Haven't painted any for a long while but you can adjust the color by the amount of water added. The more water, the more grayish in tone they come out. I never really liked the gloss black "Armor All" look and preferred them a bit more gray for the older RJs and Suburbans. Cut with less water if you prefer them darker black.

Will be yet another crisis averted when... I'm not awaken at 2am to hear the dreaded shriek... I SMELL GAS!!!

I bought this 520H probably about 10 years ago for parts, mainly the front axle. I had the idea I would swap it into my 314-8. The right front tire/rim was crushed by something (you see the replacement in the pic). Before I rolled it off my trailer in it’s outdoor in the weather parking spot, I figured I’d put some gas down the carb and a battery and see if it would fire. To my surprise it did - for a quick few seconds. So it’s been setting, sometimes with tarps and other times without - on the shelf. i needed to get another WH going and decided I’d try this one. New gas line, fuel filters, replacement front rim/tire, engine and transmission fluids and filters, spark plugs (air cleaner was good) and it fired off. Put a 42” rear discharge deck on and mowed some grass today. I tell my wife that these unrepaired tractors I have laying around are like good books on the shelf with chapters yet to be read. The 520H w/ 709 hrs came off the shelf for some reading this week...👍

Changed the oil and filter on the transaxle for the 418-A today and found something different, the date, # of hours on machine and the # of filters replaced that the original owner engraved on the filter. I assume this was done when the Kohler M18 was removed and the KT-17 installed. I purchased this from the 2nd owner who has only had this since March and was hoping to restore it but like many of us owns other WH 's and decided to sell it. Date 11-13-01 #6 704 hours , tractor shows 967 on the hour meter and seems to run real strong and tight, sometimes looks don't show the real truth. Real tough tractors those Wheelhorse's.

We didn't get much of a tremor here in western NC. I was in the bathroom at the time and my wife figured I was just passing gas!

That's a nice way to end the day - will have to visit next time we are in Germany 😊 Your like me, have the lives of a cat 🐈 It was her idea in the end anyway, I was showing a picture of someone's shed full of wheelhorses, next minute we had brought another one! Below is a picture of the gang before the new one joins. The C-161 hood isn't on properly as it doesn't have a bracket at the moment. They all work, although I need a new coil for one of the C-125's as stole it to get one of the others running.

An honorable decision. I thank him for doing so and pray for his safety and success.

Oh yeah good point, just have the Kohler's and one dodgy Briggs at the moment. Can't believe I have to wait two weeks to get it! Been home a whole month, bit too be fair this is the third wheelhorse I have brought home in that time 😁
  23. 3 points
It's mine 😁 Added a couple of extra photos. Guy is happy to hold it until I get back home on the 26th, then it's only a 5 hour round trip to go and collect it - practically the end of my driveway!

I just got permission to buy it! Hopefully it's available and the guy doesn't mind holding it for two weeks - I am back at work tomorrow unfortunately. Will let you know if I get the deal done or not....

I just showed her this for a laugh, your a dead man! Brilliant advice though! Marie is very good at letting me get what I want, but I have to work for it. One of my favourite tricks is to leave things I want in the Amazon/eBay basket. She goes to buy herself something and just clicks "pay now" without realising it is a trap I have managed to get loads of things I'm not allowed by doing this, and it's not technically my fault as I didn't buy it....

With proper maintenance the Wheel Horse will give several more decades of service. From time to time it is good to remove the engine covering shrouds to remove any accumulation of grass clippings, same goes for the transmission area. good cooling flow and regular oil changes are the key to longevity.

After watching that video 3 times @WVHillbilly520H, I think I know where there is a 520 sitting with a muffler rotted off.... I think I’m going to have to look🤔👍

Ok, spent a small advice, pick a gift from her wishlist and spend it, to her so you get one more excuse free.. 😎😂 just take care, that both things arrived at same Day or her gift faster than you‘s. Than you ice gets quick thicker again..

Yes it does work but I already brought two in the last few weeks so I am on thin ice at the moment! Will try one last day of looking sad that I don't own it then will have to give up for a few weeks - besides I still need to buy a sweeper from Denmark that Skipper has.

Hello All, it’s been a while since I’ve posted. I recently picked up an old wheel horse 877 from a cousin. He owned it for the last 50 years. I’ll try to send the pictures

The big one will not work for the front rims. The post is too large to fit through the hole of those rims. I have both sizes also. Makes fairly quick work of them. Get yourself a strap while you're there too. Helps to fill the tires back up.

And the two-wheeled contraption in the background, what's that?

Yes they all get used for different jobs, I don't mind if they get dirty as they make our lives so much easier.

I will check out harbor freight because I think I need to sandblast the rims to do it right. thanks

The three point will have its own cylinder and will need to be plumbed to the control valve. You should be looking for a 8-5422 kit but your best bet is going to try and find a boneyard machine that has one on it as I would bet they are getting rare. Later and earlier parts may work as well. Study the manual attached. On the fuel issue you can try three things A check valve in line A new diaphragm fuel pump A electric fuel pump which is a guaranteed cure. Axle seals are the most frequent source of leaks, dirt and debris on the axle can cut them over time. These transaxles have bearings rather than bushings so they are very dependable. This thread by @stevasaurus shows how well built they are. Enjoy!

@WVHillbilly520H Love it!!! I do miss the Onan rumble and think it wont be long before theres another one in the stable in one form or another. There's a guy nearby on Marketplace who just posted up an Onan genset, not running but turns over, for 50 bucks. Its probably going to happen.

If the gear would turn easily by hand, I'd expect something wrong. Know that you have all refinished (and some new parts?) and that during the initial 'break-in' period I'd not be surprised that the gear would be tight or hard to turn by hand. If you've followed torque specs, applied a generous amount of pre-lube (breakin oil), and followed the manual, your fear is probably unwarranted.

This is an interesting topic on the K91 with a starter generator. There also was an option for a plug in starter for a K91. I asked one of our member Ryan Transue about this earlier this month. A coupe photos on Kohlers and one with a Clinton motor.. Duo-Therm in LaGranger, Indiana made these and they are a rare item. A couple members have them on Wheel Horse tractors.

I do ..... the sound of the motor working, the smell of fresh turned dirt, being out in the country and fresh air, the comraderie, the fun of replacing a broken lift cable with a bro, talking tractors and plowing, knowing what you are doing can grow food to sustain. Dan's pulled pork, guys sleeping in my shop, mandatory drivers meetings & oil checks, the seat time on a bro's rig.... Stop me if I ramble but I'm sure I missed a few.
