15 pointsThis morning I had the honor of being able to pick up a Suburban 400 (at least that's what I believe it is). No data plate and the not original engine didn't run. Didn't matter to me, ever since I picked up a 551 for one of my buddy's a few years ago, I fell in love with the '60 & '61 series tractors. Luckily, this one was close to my house (40 minutes) and still available when I contacted him. The not original Briggs was in pretty rough shape so in order to quench my thirst to drive it before end of day, I decided to do a 3 hp, $110 Predator swap from HF. This engine fired right up and had no issue driving this tractor around. It's pretty fast in 3rd gear. Tractor still needs some work, but it felt great to get this 60 year old machine back out and running. And I love the duallies! IMG_0433.mp4 IMG_0435.mp4

10 pointsSo, my crazy family and a I drove about 380 miles to Jim and Cindy’s this weekend. It was great, other than Mrs. P getting schmucked in the forehead by a stray stick at the bonfire! She’s a trooper and iced and walked it off. Thanks again WI crew, we missed you @PeacemakerJack! @oldiron613 it was great to meet you and ride your Pond lever steer!
-
10 pointsAfter Rylee got her leg a bit hot, she jumped on the Super C and let Mrs. P take the RJ for a spin. Shortly after, the super C lost a ammeter wire and died on the trail. @Achto received a Rylee sized pilot on Gretel’s 520 for the rest of the ride through the neighbor’s place while I got the C back to home camp. There were more than just tractor rides. Rylee disced and dragged the fire break and Jim’s field area, Dale popped a little too big ‘a wheelie and reared that Ford over almost on top of him, spilled his drink and spit some bearings out the case of his Peerless, we burned plenty of wood, ate way too much food and even laughed about stuff!
-
10 pointsRylee found an RJ that she could mostly teach the pedals. It sparked her flame yet again to build her own RJ! It also reminded us that the first 45 elbow out of the head sure gets hot to the touch on a 10 year old’s calf! She, like her Mommy, walked it off and couldn’t wait to hop on it again! Rylee had a lesson in changing a battery on a 753 too. Too bad we didn’t give her a lesson in cleaning the fuel system, huh Jim @WHX24?
-
10 pointsInstalled a set of auxillary lighting, in the form of an HL-5 kit. Was nice to discover them hiding in my inventory here today.
-
9 pointsSo that 753... good runner until you fill the tank! On a second ride of Saturday, we topped off the tanks and headed out. For those who have been there before, we were across the street for last year’s plow field back in the woods when the 753 I was riding decided to start acting like it was running out of fuel. It would half sputter and run with full choke, but no other way. We used Jason’s pocket knife and a crescent wrench to determine the fuel pump was supplying ample amounts of fuel to the carb, but the passageway to the needle and seat for the float had clogged! Al and his big monster stretched Super Cub turned IH Farmall came to the rescue and pulled me out of the woods, away from the mosquito birds and back to the ranch again!

8 pointsa quick fresh up for the case nothing crazy, stripped the tins to metal and repainted, new fronts, painted the rims, fixed some wiring, made a seat pad with some spare material. a couple new decals. thanks again @Vinylguy we really wanted to do a patina resto but the sheet metal was to far gone, the frame was degreased and oiled.
-
8 pointsDid some horse trading with Uncle Jim this weekend... thanks again Jim and Cindy!
-
8 pointsUnless you plan a reuse of the concrete , it’s easier to break up and move by hand. Sledgehammer or small electric jackhammer will make short easy work of it... remove the pieces and fill with dirt / seed...
-
7 pointsalmost! Jim and Dan have a bunch of 701 parts and needed some of mine too. I feel like I got the better end of the deal, but it was his idea This is a 401 I believe, minus the diamond tread tires that were on the back. I tossed on some Silvertownes for now and they look just dandy to me! I talked to @stevasaurus on the way home, found me a Binny’s and some Wheel Horse Whiskey!
-
6 pointsAt 5.30 am I was painting those parts that were prepped yesterday before the heat, then mowed the lawn with the 312 and took a trail ride on both the C-120 and the 417-8. Overall a productive and fun day with plenty of seat time.

4 points@ebinmaine That name sounds vaguely familiar... Colossus... ?Colossus... ?... like maybe a really old build thread...??? Hhhmmm... not recalling any recent photos or updates either...
-
4 pointsUse what you like. It always cracks me up when lubricants are mentioned on this forum. Kohler recommends detergent oil. Use what ever you like. Gear oil Doesn't get changed every year. I prefer synthetic. Use what you like. Hydros, I like Mobil ! because of the heat. Use what you like. THESE ARE GARDEN TRACTORS WE PUT AROUND ON! IT AINT THE INDY 500 OR THE 24 HOURS OF LEMANS!!!!!
-
4 pointsEasiest to just demo that top step in place, then simply top dress that area with a yard of top soil. Like maybe 15 minutes worth of work with that rented electric jack hammer.
-
4 pointsYou can rent a electric jack hammer for not too much and bust it up into smaller pieces.I have used them and they work well not too heavy. Will be a little harder if it has re bar in it, but if you have a gas wrench that makes it easy. Just watch out for the dry grass could turn into a barbecue.

4 pointsWhat I did today is pretty mindless compared to what you are dealing with @johnnymag3 . Cleaned, sanded and sanded more and degreased. Just to hot to prime and paint today. Will be up a the crack of dawn to beat the heat in the morning and get these ready for assembly on the 310-8.

3 pointsI have a weakness for these early gilson machines so I picked this up today. There's just something about those round fenders and the big square hood. Who has one of these? I don't see many of these around. Came with a front mount blade and a ton of maintenance paperwork from over the years. Something fell on it and broke the steering wheel, but it takes the same wheel as a horse and I have a two on the shelf. Anyone have a starter generator belt cover for it they want to sell? Last picture is what the shield looks like.

3 pointsYou guys run into a bind let me know. I can get your cranks ground. (No pun intended).
-
3 pointsThere is a whole thread dedicated to it...😉 However, this is one of my favorites... my little buddy and his big tractor!
-
3 pointsVery true, but for some strange obscure reason I'm intrigued by watching this horse get beaten...again.
-
3 pointsI am with Peacemaker Jack on this. i stopped commenting on lubricants a long time ago.
-
3 pointsGeez... at 30 I could carry all that lumber under one arm, at 40 took a few minutes longer, at 60 one at a time, at 75 -THANK GOD for the Wheel Horse !!!! One load strapped on and this old guy moved it all in one shot... (sharp eyes will notice that the right front rim might still be yellow ) Grand kids must be on the way and we are staying away from the public playground !!!!!!! Mike B
-
3 pointsAlso you can take a grinder and cut some slots and drive a wedge to split the step. Money spent on renting a tool goes into owning a tool.
-
3 pointsDrill a few shallow holes, fill with water then come winter when the water freezes it will expand and crack to slabs.

3 pointsWell done! I showed Zach the video of you driving through the tall grass and he was going crazy saying...”I need those type of tires on Blackbeard (his GT14)!!!” Very cool indeed and I’m glad you’re sticking with it. You have it almost to the point of being able to put it into service👍🏻
-
3 pointsThat sucker has been in place long enough that the grass roots and soil have a death grip on it. Pulling it out in one piece ain't happening without a lot of digging. I would bust it up in place with an electric jack hammer and cover it up. There should be a void under it the pieces will fall into.

2 pointsA 60" deck was available for a 520H if the tractor was equipped with a forward swept front axle. There are not a huge amount of different features on a 520HC when compared to a 520H. A 520H will be comparably slower than a 520HC.

2 pointsproblem is it is in the road right of way, depending on your township, you probably need there permission or permit to remove it and regrade, also need a 1 call before you dig to mark out the utilities
-
2 pointsYou don't release pressure at all. Jus get the belt on all pulleys except ONEe outside pulley. On THAT pulley, start the belt on the outside edge of the pulley and TURN the pulley by hand to get the belt to drop into the 'V'.
-
2 pointsI think it may be a a little out of that engine hoists league, unless you break it up, and have a solid place to roll it on.
