Hello. I'd like to say thank you to members of this forum. Because of you, I've finally gotten my grandfather's '86 414-8 to a place that I can call it my own. He bought it new, I mowed with it when he went blind, and it sat dormant for years after he died in '01. About 7 years ago, with my wife I purchased his house from the family. The 414 came with the house. I've used it to mow and putter around, but finally got serious about getting it up to snuff. I installed Dave Kirk's transducer ignition (with the Bosch blue coil), the facet cube pump, magnetic drain plug, Valvoline racing oil, Redline gear oil in the tranny, and, thanks to this forum, Carlisle ag tires in rear with Deestone tri-ribs in front. Oregon g3 mower blades are awaiting install. I'm just waiting for a transfer pump in the mail and the last thing I'll be doing is adding RV antifreeze ballast to the tires. It's running like a beast. We have one Auracana (Easter Egger) who can let herself in and out of the coop. For the rest, there’s a door. This is our first year planting sunflowers. They seem to be growing quite happily!

My late 80's paint held up really well. It was the maroon stripe that didnt. Replaced the maroon with a custom black set from @Vinylguy . Never was a fan of the maroon.

Don't sweat the scratches. Paint it. Pretty it up. Make it nice. Then work it like you should. That's what these little rigs were meant to do.

Well, my addiction has started. I now have my second Wheel horse. I picked up a 314-8 with a rear discharge . Seems to run ok, throttle seems a little touchy if you move it too fast but it looks like they installed a replacement carb at some point and I'm assuming it needs to be adjusted. The issue it has that I need to address first is electrical and I need some starting points. He was using a screw driver across the solenoid to start it. You turn on the key switch, jump it out and she starts right up. Now if you get off of the seat it shuts off as if the PTO was left engaged but it is not. Is this an issue with the switch for the PTO? Thanks in advance! Kindest regards Ed

@Ro-Go did you use the factory front wheels that came on the 414 or others with your Deestone Tri-ribs? Also it must be a late 80s thing with the paint I also have a maroon stripe 414-8 (I purchased from the original owner) and 312-8 with the paint in really sad shape but I just finished some touch up work on the 414 before it goes to its new home. Nice to see you keeping the "family" machine going. Enjoy.

Got tired of searching for a radiator bleed key in my tool bag, too small to find. So I made my own today. I figure the bigger size will make it harder to lose. Hard part was drilling the square hole in the end!

Halfway through installing overhead LED lighting. That's six 48" lights, six more to go.

TC10284, i would add that ROTELLA 30 WT , IS A GREAT SUMMER OIL , their 5-30 rotella truck oil is great over winter , emphasis on changing HOT OIL , will give you the most removal of crud build up , i would also do a baseline transmission fluid change , jack up front end of tractor for best drainage , 75 90 0r 75-140 gear oil. typically valve adjustment is not an issue . seafoam gas treatment, regularly will help keep the fuel system clean . stay after it , pete

I'd say one of the most important thing you can do is change oil often.

This is Finley our little buddy, he keeps me company when working outside, and generally buzzes about the farm checking on his piglets - he is very protective of them. We got Finn from a few miles up the road, about half an hour south of Glasgow. In an interesting twist the lady who was selling him and the rest of the litter used to be our baby sitter back in the Falkland Islands. She has also moved to the UK and married a farmer - it can be such a small world!

I bought a D160 last weekend to put my loader on. It has this hitch on it. It looks like a sleeve hitch. It has two struts on the bottom side locking it solid. Thanks

My wife is allergic to everything with fur so we have a rhinoceros iguana (Cyclura Cornuta). The cyclura iguanas are different than the green iguanas. They are commonly called rock iguanas since they are more terrestrial than the greens and hang out in the rocky jungles of the West Indies. Here's pics of our rhino Sterling. My grandfather fabbed the tool carrier; I affixed it with tek screws. So far it's running tip top. I went soup to nuts with the Dave Kirk add-ons, just installed the breather cover too.

Well. at the very least you need to recoup any money lost in picking it up, cleaning and whatever else you did after getting it. If you don't lose money at least you won't feel quite as bad. It's up to you but if it was me and I wanted to keep it, I would. Just my 2c

Well i got a message from the guy i bought my 315-8 from today saying that he had sold it to me for an older guy that was a friend of his(guessing the guy had no means of listing it for sale) come to find out the old guy that had it before me regrets selling it and wants it back. I thought about it and absolutely want to keep it. But i do feel bad as i know how it is wishing you didnt sell something

Shaw initially built wall-behind tractors which they then evolved into garden tractors similar to a number of company's approaches in that pre-ww2 time period. Generally, they were larger that most garden tractors by today's standards, but similar in size to the early Pond, Gibson, Speedex and other truck farming, large garden tractors of that period using alot of recycled automotive parts. Shaw did get into smaller size mowers in the 1950's while still offering the larger garden tractors and then eventually sold out to Bush Hog in the early 1960's. The R6 model pictured is pretty modified from original with the larger 2 cylinder engine and then the lengthened hood to cover it. Originally the R6 was powered by a single cylinder Briggs ZZ engine, similar to what Speedex used in the model B tractors pictured.

This one is younger than Lynx, and also came to us in a slightly unorthodox way. You see, our German kid Jil brought her sister Kim to visit us on her third or fourth trip back. We all went to a pumpkin patch / petting zoo / farm across town and there was a big stacked pyramid of hay bales for kids to play on. There were a bunch of barn kittens around and a rowdy bunch of elementary kids were stuffing the kittens deep down into the cracks of the bales. Kim rescued him by capturing him from a little boy and stuck him in her jacket. The girls were too young to know better, so Kim named him after her “Great Grandpa Bruno Mars”, or Bruno, Buno, Beeno, etc. He’s the hunter of the family, bringing in rabbits, mice, moles, chipmunks, squirrels, etc. home and he and Lynx get full bellies. He’s been known to travel 1/2 mile across the field at night hunting sparrows or whatever birds land in the field to rest.

Pullstart does not have anything on me....there was a young kid on here who wanted a vertical briggs for a b-11 or something like that. I sent him one in trade for a nice WH cast iron Eight HP. My daughter did the trade in Ann Arbor at Busch's Grocery . The Briggs had a cracked carb housing and the kid got some help here, but then never returned to let us know how it went. Eric helped me with some engine tins and a screen to make my engine a runner. So a swap and a hand from Eric and I had a runner. Also in ANN ARBOR, i found a 42" SD mower that was as perfect as anyone could hope for at an embarrassing low price. He set it outside for me to pick up and just put the money under the door mat. At least that way I could give him more than asking price. The tractor itself was a roller that I got for free when i bought a couple of decks in Indiana. if i ever can manage to get fully retired, i have one tractor that needs a ring job and two more that need bored out and rebuilt. The free tractor is a short frame automatic-----just perfect for a front mount spray rig or stuff like that. We all have our stories of great deals. it is just that now they may be less common than before.

Hate to tell the guy that he will only get about 15-20 dollars for it at the scrap yard.

Check where the oil level is with the dipstick. I believe you will be OK without draining. Jacking up that side will help as well.

Thanks for your input I did use a handheld meter and I was surprised how accurate the tractors meter was.

That's one of the beautiful things about these tractors, so much parts interchangeability.

I grafted one of those Allis/Simplicity blowers on a 210-H Worked great!

Thel Broadmore 727 was a good little unit, and to be honest, one of the best lawn tractors of that era, baring any color, any brand. I had a Broadmore 728 briefly - they're built solidly. For $20, I'll be all over that in a heart beat. To to simpletractors.com to find more info on it.

That headlight bucket and lens will work from many different tractors from that era. Give Lincoln a call at A-Z Tractor, I'm sure he'll be able to fix you up, or put an ad in the wanted section of the classifieds.

I had a 728 myself and .. I'm sorry Elmer Pond.. but that thing was just the absolute best mowing machine. The center frame pivot made for a nice ride and with a good deck, they cut and stripe like no other. The generators wear prematurely and are prone to loosing bearings, due to the vertical orientation. The frame pivot can break if not maintained or abused.. but that one looks clean. Bought mine cheap and it was in real good shape. They are NOT garden tractors. The blower will disappoint. They are too light. Built stout enough.. but not so heavy that it leaves ruts in the lawn. If I had the chance to get another for cheap I would. But mine was just too small for what I needed to do.

So I installed my Mule drive adapter....so I can use modern stuff on my old tractors. I also installed the painted overkill support for my MAGNAFLOW BOOM TUBE on the 1257. Also I put the painted parts on the tractor I received from a wonderful member here....Dont you you just love it when a plan comes together and things look very different?

Got my new decals from @Vinylguy yesterday. Decided to go with one of his custom designs and not the original. Put them on this AM. So that completes my 416-8 " refreshing " You can see the post in the resto section. Happy with how it came out. Took it for a cruise up and down my street ! Second thought it still isnt complete... I forgot I have the engine decals on there way. Follow up coming soon.

I am not a fan of spiders! Especially one with the word “jump” in their name . He wouldn’t last long if found on any of my kitchen counters

Alex Thanks for the reminder to love them while you have them, nobody knows what will happen tomorrow. In the meantime enjoy the love and the laughter the she'll bring. She'll let you know when it's time to say goodbye. And for the laughter, here's my girl when she knows she's not supposed to be on my chair. You can almost see the fear in her eyes, or was that look saying "Who's chair?"
