Just bought this today for my property I just purchased, not a big place just not quite small for a push mower. Got it and trailer for 550.00. Seemed fair.. It did not run when I purchased it, I was told everything was fined as usual. Lol. Being just shy of 60 I knew I was in for a little bit, so what did I do to my wheel horse today?. Clean the carburetor, resealed the fuel tank petcock on the bottom that was leaking like a sieve, And clean all the grunge out of it, Replace completely melted voltage regulator plug with quality marine terminals, ( Still not charging ) Change the oil, cleaned up the points so I can start it as new ones and plug have been ordered, Adjust carburetor and governor, stared at it alot... lol At 1st I thought I made a mistake Getting it for the property but after correcting all the backwards things on it from p.o. it ran like a champ. Got lots more to do as I know now it will be exactly what I need. Got lots of stuff to take apart clean adjust and re install. Gotta get to the charging situation and get that fixed. But I think it's worth it.. seems like a good old horse.

So, back in January, I had a fellow from NY get in contact with me over the subject of a 1937 Briggs & Stratton engine I had for sale. Long story short, he said he had a seaplane, and asked if I'd hold it till summer when he could take it up.. Not being too big and not being in a rush to move it, I took him up on it.. Well, the day finally came. He flew up from the Adirondacks in this Cessna 195, met him out on Great East Lake in Shapleigh, ME. Aboard a 1958 MirroCraft.. Quite the job switching them from the little boat to the plane, the plane's pontoon nearly submerged with 3 of us standing on it. Had to get pictures.. nobody would believe me otherwise hahah. The old engine is going back to good use at last. Glad to see it being useful.

My Neighbor, Dave, you know the crusty old guy with the beer in his shirt pocket driving my 310? Well he taught me years ago the power of the stainless. His basement shop is the most complete shop I've ever seen. Oh it's a mess no doubt, but if you want it, he likely has it. I quite literally have a hardware store next door to me. No wonder we've been good friends for over 20 years. Me: Dave, got any 1/4-20 nylocks floating around? I just need two. Dave: Do you want black oxide, zinc (nah just kidding, I don't have zinc, they're crap. Actually over here I might have some zinc, Oh look a coupla boxes of 250 pcs.), stainless or stainless? I AM NOT EXAGGERATING! I once asked him, way back when I first moved in if I could borrow a 1" combo wrench. He said, "Keep it." I replied, "I only need it for about 10 minutes." Dave replied, "I ain't giving you nothing I don't already have 10 of." He wasn't lying. Here's a pic of his shop I took back in 2016. Look at the top right of the pic. Dave is the only person I know who has a box in his shop, stuffed full, labeled "Carbon".

Well, as I mentioned in my other thread about ploughs, we picked up the Snow plow yesterday just to the south of London. It was a bit of a trip, ended up on the road for 18 hours when you factor in food and tea breaks. While there I also brought the side discharge deck that he had available - it seemed silly to travel all that way and just bring back one item! Also got a free box of bits 😁 I think there is part of the rear attachment bracket, but no quick release clips. I'm sure you guys can identify all the parts in the photos...

No red tractors for me. My six boy (2 sons and 4 grandsons) picked me up at 8 AM and took me on a 5+ mile hike along a local stream to the site of a hydro generating station that was built in the late 1800s by the S. Morgan Smith Company which is now owned by Voith Hydro. I retired from Voith Hydro after 47 years and my oldest son Mark has worked there for 30 years. So, this site in addition to being a kayakers paradise is also of special interest to Mark and I. The site is known as the Muddy Creek Gorge and there are many you tube kayaking videos if anyone is interested. The boys actually took me down this steam in a kayak on fathers day about 15 years back. Using old drawings and a picture, we were able to confirm the site of the hydro station and found a draft tube from one of the two turbines. After returning home and a 2 hour recovery nap, Mrs K treated me to a feast of burgers, sweet corn, hot lettuce salad, and strawberry shortcake. Hope you all had a great day.

So if I am understanding the question, you have no problem pulling up the hill. But when you turn the tractor around and go back down, the engine/transmission is not holding back. I would suggest that the more weight that you have, the more momentum you are going to build up. I would suggest that the engine may be lacking compression, the belt is slipping, and applying the brake is doing nothing because it is worn or not adjusted properly. Replace the belt first of all. Checking compression is not easy. I'm going to pitch a sale here. My brake linings might help if you are not getting much braking from your existing one.

And here's where it really gets funny. Dave is an old school engineer and scientist. Usually when you ask him a "why", he will give you all the science until your eyes roll back in your head. Ask him why he has a box, chock full, labeled, "Carbon" and he'll reply, "Well..what would I use it for? I don't know, but I might need some carbon one day." Love that old coot.

Happy Fathers day all!! Below is a picture of my Dad & me with the last tractor that we restored together. R.I.P. Dad. Today I smoked 3 pork butts for a get together at my sisters. Was good to spend time with family.

I believe that the engine puts the belt under tension on the straight pull side of the pulleys, but the transmission can't put near the tension on the belt as it works against the idler pulley. So my guess is belt slippage not allowing much engine braking. A new belt and gas spring or idler spring might help.

I have a couple of engineer friends. 1 is very old. Everything in his basement you could imagine. Machine shop, piano and organ, Wurlitzer juke box, a military surplus gen set that can light the neighborhood ect. Last I knew he was building computers from scratch . He had an 85" monitor hooked up so his grandkids can play games. 2nd one lives next door. He's never satisfied with nothing. He over builds stuff so bad that if it takes a week to build it, it takes a month to remove it Back to Horses. Since I defeated Joseph Lucas on his home turf with the electrical system on the 1075, I rigged up a temporary seat and replaced the belt. Done for today. wore my leg out yesterday. Got more clean up and cosmetics to go.

There she be! Friend picked it up on the cheap. Really in good shape for it's age. Motor is a 1969 Evinrude 25 long shaft. All she needed was an ignition tune up and water pump. Everything else is just fine. Very smooth and always fires first pull.

I guess that yellow must make your 80 an industrial . This drawing should be helpful with the charging issue. The two outer wires on the Regulator/rectifier should have 35 volts AC +/- with the engine running and the center terminal needs to have battery voltage on it with the ignition key on.

By the time you buy the engine and the deck I think you can get a complete tractor. I just recently purchased a 416-8 with a 48 inch deck for about what you would pay for an engine and a deck. 2 Horses are better then 1 is the standard answer you will find here.

The powers that be filed a complaint that her petunias were too close to the porch supports. When the wind blew it would cause them to rub against the porch supports and damage the flowers on that side. To remedy this issue I scrounged around my garage for a solution. What I found was a couple of spring teeth from a dump rake. Why did I have these?? I might need them some day & today was the day. I welded a piece of 1/4" by 1 1/2" steel to each of the spring teeth to use as a mount to the porch support. This new hanger will keep her plants plenty far enough away from the porch support.. Plus I get amusement from lifting the plants a bit & then letting them drop. They will bounce for a long time!! What can I say, I amuse easily. Let's see your repurpose projects.

I believe your 211-4 is a vertical shaft horse, the belt is more like a 2 sheave and with those tension pulleys will not let the transmission run away. Your 312-8 just has 1 tension pulley going for it, and your engine just is not going to be able to hang onto your transmission. A new TORO belt and tension spring should make a difference. I think I would try low range / 2nd gear and see if that helps. What ever you try...DO NOT put any sticky stuff on the belt of pulleys! The belt and guard are your clutch, and if the belt is sticky, it will not function as it should. You will be grinding gears when shifting.

@Boat guy Looks like you've got a 1974 or 5 B80. Great tractors!! My first, Patriot horse, is a 74. The Kohler 8 is a great little engine! Have to admit these horses look ok in yellow. Have you tested the output of the stator off the engine? Should be 30 - 35 volts AC at full throttle. Also try putting the wires at the ammeter to the same terminal on the back of the meter. That bypasses the ammeter. Check for charge then. Keep us posted and good luck!
