Hey all....some probably already know this. Can't remember if I posted this here as my old age is not helping with memory.... Last November the opportunity of buying one of my favorite tractors came up. This is a tractor I never thought would be available to purchase. Mr. John Campbell had it built by Mr. Robert Rock. The craftsmanship that goes in to the tractors Robert builds is simply amazing. You have to see them in person to actually appreciate his work. Well, I had to sell a few of my prized tractors to buy this beast but think it was worth it. The only complaint I have so far is the power. Hopefully Robert may be able to help me but not a super major issue. This tractor was not meant for work and basically a show piece. However, it has been working just a little since I've owned it. Recently the starter went out which became more of an issue than should have. However, it is is fixed and back in action. Here are a few pictures of it now. Hopefully will get some video soon when it warms up.

The first big work weekend for the freshly restored 520H- she dragged brush and trees, and pulled wagon loads of firewood and trash like a champ. Even got a little 1 mile field ride in afterward. God I love this tractor!

My wife was tired of the rose bushes in the garden. We planted them about 7-8 years ago, and although they were healthy, the wife had other ideas for that garden. So I got orders to yank them out. Not a problem, as I pulled quite a few shrubs out with the WH, I used my old military lifting straps and put a loop around the base of the bush. I tried making an easy tug, and got nothing but wheel spin. OK, time for a little more aggressive approach. I got several feet of slack in the strap, and dumped the clutch in 2nd gear hi range. It didn’t budge. Several more attempts made me realize these things have a bigger root system than I thought.. About a year ago, I was given a 5000 lb. Ramsey winch. The guy said it didn’t work. After putting in a new solenoid and cleaning up a few electrical connections, it worked fine. Then I built a bracket to mount it to the front hitch mount on my tractor. Okay, I can hear you now... Why would you put a 5000 lb. winch on a 700 lb. tractor? Best reasons I can come up with is 1) the winch was free, and 2) because I can. I have been accused of being nuts if that helps explain. I backed the tractor up to a large tree and ran straps to the rear hitch. . I can report the setup worked great! It snatched those rose bushes out without any strain. Now I’m looking forward to the next time the wife decides to redecorate the gardens! Did I mention I can install the winch in about 5 minutes with two 3/4” bolts, and two cables directly to the battery. Danny

I started a "nontraditional" paint job on a today. The yellow shroud on the trouble light makes it look a little orange but it should have an even better bling factor in the sun light. A close up kinda shows the metallic content in the paint.

And I still had some daylight left, so I did the thing that really sold me on this trailer. After I looked at the ad a few times I realized that I could swap the fenders side to side and change their angle a little bit and they would look like airplane wings. Once that thought hit me I knew it was a done deal. I've still got to add some more bracing, but I really like the look. After I bought it I actually found that some were installed like this at the factory.

So i wanted to share an early stage trial of paint I bought this krylon international red at walmart then this easycare XO rust international red at family farm and home store. I always use international red I try to do what the ol pond brothers did! Here is a quick video of my trail paint job i did. and here is the engine on my restored rj58 I painted it with rustoleum international red years ago.

Ed - here is a little different explaination. Needle de-scalers act like a bunch of hammers that leave little dents in the surface of the metal. These little dents leave compressive residual stress in the surface of the metal. Fatigue cracks can only grow when tensile stress is applied, and fatigue cracks commonly start in the surface of a part. By leaving compressive residuals in the surface of a part, more load needs to be applied to the part before the material sees tensile stresses. This is what helps improve the fatigue life. Now, I'll start to pontificate. If you are satisfied with the above answer, stop reading. Fatigue failures are defined as failures resulting from repeated application of loads that do not produce stresses in a part that exceed the yield strength of the material. Steel has a fatigue limit. If the stresses resulting from repeated loading remain under about 23,000psi, fatigue failures will not happen. Other factors that affect fatigue failures include, but are not limited to, surface finish, part geometry, heat treatment, material defects, and material discontinuities (welds for example). Aluminum does not have a fatigue limit. Subjected to repeated loading, it will eventually fail in fatigue. Because of this, most critical aluminum parts have a service life, that when exceeded, the part should be replaced. The 737 that lost a section of the fuselage in flight over Hawaii was traced to fatigue cracksthat started in rivet holes in the skin near the forward door due to the repeated loads from cabin pressurization. Reinforcement was added in that area, and maintenance procedures improved to find these cracks before they reach a critical length. For the most part, any fatigue failures we see on a Wheel Horse will be the result of years of vibration, or some minor damage (a scratch, dent, or repair) in a critical location at some point in the tractor's life. The cracks in my two mower decks are the result of vibration. Hope this brief explanation helps.

Thank you guys so much for all the advice! As a 26 year old I have a long time in this hobby! Can’t wait to learn a lot more. I will be mowing with this and someday I wish to restore it, at which point I will retire it from its mowing career. Again, thanks for all the comments so far!

Hi Everyone I am new here. I have a Wheel Horse B-80. I really want to put a muffler stack on it with a rain cap, where do people buy that stuff from? Got this baby for $380 with delivery, all original and motor is running great! PTO is always stuck on so that’s what I have to dive into first, seems like Toro still makes parts for these which is awesome!

what oilwell wrote Static load is one thing but prepare for all of the dynamic loads. Full blast bouncing over a good size bump with a fully loaded bed plus passengers all while braking and going down a hill will add some heavy forces in ALL directions. Not sure how you have the frame mounted to the trans now but raising it to use the lower holes of the trans mount section gives you the 4" height adjustment needed for the front and you can mount a lower frame to the bottom holes in the trans, connect them with triangle or X bracing to add strength to the middle and or go all the way up to the front. It doesn't necessarily need to be a WH frame as suggested earlier but a heavy angle steel frame will work. That also helps to eliminate the weak point of the WH trans mount although some added plate to it is still a good idea. (A lower frame can can also be attached to the trans at the cast axle squares and leave the top frame attached as the normal frame mounting does.) 3 birds with one stone? Or make it 4 birds and use the lower frame as the floor support for your feet too. Think I'm up to about a dollar and a half in $0.02 thoughts so far. LoL Sorry if this isn't helpful or it's annoying and it's not intended to override any of your plans or anyone else's. Just wish I was building one too and this is how a project gets figured out to work in Leicester. You can tell me to shut up and stop adding my $0.02 at any time. The wife does that all the time because it's a bad habit of mine.

Inner engineer at work again..... The dump bed is over the axle, but the driver used to be there and isn't any more and you have been talking about making it a two seater. If you've got 300 lbs sitting just in front of the bed you've added about 900 ft-lbs of bending moment to middle of the frame that wasn't there before. If you load 300 lbs in the dump bed that load will be carried by the rear axle until you hit the brakes. At that point its momentum will cause another bending moment concentrated in the middle of the frame. There's going to be a lot of load on that joint with two people riding and hitting the brakes with a load. I think an X brace across the bottom and centered on the joint would make a big difference in strength and stability of the joint under load. Part of me also says well a piece of 1" steel on the bottom to make the vertical flange 1" taller as well so that the weld, which will be very hard and brittle and not kind about fatigue, isn't the only thing absorbing the tension at the bottom of the frame.

If we build this it will be the first tractor that has a very limited capacity around the yard. We would use it for pulling loads of wood or the tool trailer out to the forest. Stuff like that. Trina and I both like the early round hoods like that but neither one of us would drive one. We had one and we sold it because it was just way too light in the front. the reason I am considering a mid-60s square Hood short frame is because we have a nearly complete one on hand that was once familiar to Adam. @Herder That's an 856. As conversions and builds go it would be fairly easy. Remove a little sheet metal. Pressure wash. Bunch of painting. Figure out engine mount. There are no cables to run or wiring to do. What got me thinking about it is that I just really like the looks of this little engine and it runs great. Then I get the notice from Owls Head transportation museum for their upcoming calendar. This year's truck and tractor show is going to have a military bearing to it. Well now. I have an engine that needs a tractor and I have a tractor that has the engine out of it...

Well I have some good and bad news about the 1045 restore..... The good news is it will still be saved and possibly put back together as it was.... The bad news is I won't be finishing it.... Before I get any hate mail....lol..... Was presented with a trade that I just couldn't pass up. I'm sure you all will understand and agree it was a good trade. Will post more pics later in a new thread. The tractor came with a 4 HP Kohler also that runs but needs some TLC before mounting it on the tractor. Unfortunately it is not the original motor but will work for me. There was also a NOS set of mower deck blade tips included. The Vari-Drive handle has been welded and different knob put on. Think I'll leave the handle but put correct knob on it. Still a good trade I believe. Sorry for any disappointments....but hey I like the new little Horse.

Live 3/4 hour from that bridge!!! It and the Mighty Mackinac Bridge were the two I had in mind when I posted above about dynamic loads on bridges... I too have witnessed that wave effect as well as during severe winds on the Mac... it is amazing the movement... Lets hope @pullstart loads his creation’s dump with the frame’s inflection capacitor design coefficient (I made that up...sounded cool) in mind...

The whole thing is stupid. .. well maybe not if the danged Packers were playin... they were I'd be hammered by now! Gotta like the women's halftime show attire. Can't understand a thing they're singing tho.... what the heck would be wrong with having the Highway Men perform at halftime? Oh that's right several are no longer with us! Had it on just for noise out in the shop whilst I de-redded a transmission half. What a pain in the @$$ Dan! Took from game start till halftime just to get the long half done! We just got started on a 702 repaint today. I'll go get some pics Kev just to keep this thread from being totally lame.... Two base coats of silver.... Followed by three coats of a special red....

I had a small trailer with 8" tires that hauled garden tractors for a few years with no problem. Chances are the tires on yours were past their expiration date.

Knowing I wanted to haul my tractor on this I knew it would need an axle upgrade and I knew it was getting 12" wheels and tires. Another factor in upgrading the wheels and tires was that the wheels that came on it are spindle mount and that means flat tires are a pain to deal with. A move to hubs with lugs studs and nuts was in order. I wanted the radius of the tires to measure the same as the radius of the fenders, so the first thing I did was measure it and found that it was nearly identical to a 5.30-12. I ordered the wheels, tires and an axle kit online. My goal today was to get the axle welded up and ready to mount, but that went better than I expected and I ended up getting a lot more done than I planned on. Here it is with the axle, wheels and tires installed. Based on the measurements I had originally taken of the tires that came on it, I was thinking that I may have to mount the axle above the leaf springs instead of below it like the original to keep it from being too tall. I ended up not having to do that. The board holding the tongue up in the pics is pretty close to the height of the hitch on our lowest truck that would ever likely pull this, so you can see in the first post that the trailer really needed to be higher so it would ride level. It's almost perfectly level with the new axle and rolling stock.

It looks great!! The old IH red is darker that the new IH red. Example : a Farmall H is darker than a Case IH 7120. The newer color is a closer match to red, I think. But then again I've never had a new old stock piece to take to a jobber so that they can use a scanner on it. To be perfectly honest about color, in the ball park is quite close enough. No one will persecute you, unless you spray your JD green & yellow . To haul my freshly painted parts, I lay some cardboard down in the bed of my truck & space every thing out as much as I can. Then the trip home is done as though I'm driving on eggs the whole way home.

Honestly, the load of the dump will mainly be over the axle so I’m not concerned with bridge chaotic collapse to-do’s. However, I did just verify that the box when loaded will keep some weight over the front end! I’d hate to see (though it would be fun to see) Rylee tossed like a spoon full of potatoes in a middle school food fight! Today I worked with my father in law to replace a broken leaf spring on his truck. We used a couple pairs of leaves from an old Ford Highboy to replace both sides of the second leaf on his packs. That’ll be out of the shop soon enough and I’ll get back to frame work on the dump.

It would probably have been fine with a tractor, but it may haul heavier things from time to time as well. I wanted to get away from the spindle mount wheels and stamped steel axle anyway, so I was replacing all of that and upgrading didn't cost much more. I put a 2,000 lb axle under it and even though I doubt I will ever haul that much on it, there's no sense not making everything capable of handling that. I really wanted a 1,000 or 1,200 lb axle, but the larger one didn't cost any more.
