8 pointsWell, everyone inspired me to give a resto a shot. Bought this 1056 that the seller said had a factory re-powered 12hp K301S. Guess not having the generator isn't a bad thing, but what do I know? Wheel Horse tires must be original. Not bad to get 50 years out of a set of tires. Drained the trans-axle and it looked like and was the consistency of pancake batter. Thick pancake batter. The wiring was done by someone, who, well, someone whose daddy didn't teach him right. Lots of bailing wire to be replaced with proper hardware......42" deck has some cancer but seems to operate okay. I'm sure I will have a lot of questions in the coming months. Sure hope for a before after picture down the road like I see on here all the time.

8 pointsRaining here today, so I have plenty of downtime. Took some pictures for you. Here is the vacuum operated (pulse) pump assembled Notice the IN and OUT markings on the top With the screws removed, the pump splits open revealing the diaphragm. With the diaphragm removed, the one-way valve assembly is seen. One screw is removed and the valve cover is removed. Notice the INLET side (left) has a fine coil spring, and the OUTLET side (right) has a flat disc. There is also a gasket to seal the cover. On the left we see the INLET disc, and on the right we see the OUTLET spring. That is how it supposed to be assembled. I hope this helps.

7 pointsAfter 63 healthy years I thought I had a 48 hrs flu bug. Seems I get that every 4 or 5 yrs. No big deal, some Tylenol and extra blankets. Couple days later good to go. This time something seemed much different but being 1 year away from medicare I was not about to go to the er and as I have never had a Dr. I could not get an appointment in a timely manner. After 3 days of fever and severe chill, Lola made me go to what they call prompt care. Thank God I went. Got right in Sunday afternoon and 40 minutes later was diagnosed with pneumonia. I was shocked but if I had waited another day it would have been much worse. Probably hospitalization with no insurance. Affordable care act only works for us if we dont work. Great idea but it needs fixed. Great Dr and very good experience. Except for the flu test where they shove a long wire so far up your nose that it feels like they are stabbing your brain. Not fun. So I am 3 days into the meds and finally am fever free for the most part and not coughing incessantly but sleepy, week and tired all the time. Hoping to stay awake to watch the Cubs game. GO CUBBIES! !! Good news is I will recover. Bad news is it will take another 5 days possibly. Got so tired of sleeping I decided to post my experience and let everyone know what's going on. Don't mess around with pneumonia or it will sneak up on you real quick. This is not sympathy ploy just shout out to the great folks at St Mary's prompt care. If you have no insurance this is the place to go when your sick. Terry

7 pointsFunny story about my Doc. He's from Taiwan and it takes awhile to be able to understand him. My wife, B-I-L and S-I-L all go to him. They like to call you after 9:30 at night and tell you what's wrong with you or give you a lab report. S-I-L was sick and went in. A couple days later B-I-l gets a call at night, " Ruth have Low Pneumonia" B-I-L says "What the he is Low Pneumonia?" He mean't to say NO Pneumonia! Another time I had my physical. I knew I was going to get my eyes checked. His wife give the test and she's from Taiwan also and pretty whacky. On the way to the exam room you pass by the eye chart. I'm sitting waiting for him and decide it's time to have some fun. I sneak back out and memorize the eye chart manufacturer's name and address which is printed on a tiny line on the bottom. Time for the eye test and she says "cover one eye and read the lowest line you can see" I blurt out " Acme Eye Chart Co. Walla Walla Nebraska" or something like that. She just stared at me and didn't know what to do!

6 pointsHey guys! I have been here for a little while but didn't have a wheelhorse til today when a guy had one in the back of his barn for scrap! I was like hell no that ain't going to scrap! So I paid 40$ for it and he had all the manuals and the original sales receipt! It also has a snow blower and mower deck! And it's in really nice original condition! It doesn't run yet but I will get it there as I'm a k series fanatic and ALL of my garden tractors are Kohler k- series! I will include some photos and could anybody tell me the year of it? I think it's a 78 but reassure me on that! Pictures to follow, it's also a Hilo 4 speed 8 speeds

6 points@SylvanLakeWH , I had a few advantages in doing this thread. I had some very good people that know a lot also to work with...RacinBob, Lane Ranger, pfrederi, Buckrancher, Squonk and a host of others. It was also a huge advantage to have 4 different 3 piece transmissions and 1 two piece transmission all sitting there open to compare with. I was just lucky to have this opportunity...and I just want to say...I don't think I could ever give back to Red Square more then this site has given me. I know that sounds corny...but it is true. This place keeps me young at heart.

Need to get in the shop and get caught up on several projects. Got to get ready for the show. Thank you all for your words of encouragement and prayers. Lost 8 lbs in a week but think I will gain it back today.

4 pointsGot home from an errand and some new Bling was waiting for me. Another forum member down the street who does not frequent site much had a buddy of his machine these knobs up from aluminum for me. I mentioned to him that the plastic ones degrade due to sunlight etc and so he had these done up for my resto project. Going to add some additional pizazz to it once they are polished up. Not to mention they should endure better.

4 pointsI just saw this Terry. Holy-Cow, that is nothing to mess with. Glad you are on the up swing, but take it easy. You will have to be careful for quite a while now. That means no running through the sprinkler at the show this year. If you want me to adopt you, I can list you as a dependent on my insurance.

4 pointsHot tip: During assembly, put a light coat of lip balm on gaskets that might need to be reused in the future (carburetor, intake, etc). The gasket will be less likely to stick to the mating surfaces on the next disassembly.

3 pointsSo I managed to get my portable canopy installed that I got from HF to clear the garage so I can turn it into a paint booth. Also picked up the fenders from welder. The center back piece bolts to the rear frame assembly. The goal is that the fender supports will transfer the load to the frame and also keep the flex to a minimum. The welder did an excellent job based on my verbal direction.

I used to help a high school friend mow a country club/golf course in the late 60's and would pull reel mowers with ford 8n tractors. What a blast. We would also take our girl friends with us at sundown in his Ford convertible and drive around the golf course to turn on the sprinklers on the greens..............

3 pointsYour in Richard... .. you & me & Steve will have a little Navy reunion & swap sea stories....cept he's got none cause he's never been to sea.... @squonk says thers an Italian joint to die for as well.... My PR recipe is quite simple... rub it down good with rosemary, thyme & basil & a little salt & pepper. 350 oven for 1 1/2 then turn the oven off and leave it in. You can leave it in for hours while yer out getting some seat time. DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN DOOR & tape the damn thing shut or padlock it so no one else does either! One hour before chow turn the oven back on to 350 and it's cocktail hour cause an hour later it be done at medium rare...The roast and maybe you if the 'tails go down good & you had a few beers while getting that seat time! I put a digital meat thermometer in it so I can watch it outside the oven. 135-140 for medium rare...higher if you like it medium or well done. My wife has coniptions if it goes over 135...she likes it mooing yet... Don't forget the Au jus and add pan drippings to it. Ta heck with the baked potato ...all that starch is bad for ya and you don't need that when you are tryin to clog your arteries. I get a five pounder but a good rule of thumb is a pound per person if your havin a dinner party. leftovers are always good and make an awesome vegtable beef soup!

Glad to hear your on the upswing! I had a pretty strong cold in March that I was able to get rid of in a few days but the cough lingered on for almost 3 weeks. Very annoying! Mike.........

3 pointsBack in the day the dozer blades came in 2 packages. The blade and the A-frame kit. The A-frame kit was the same for the long frame tractors and the GT-14. The long frame tractors got a 42" blade. The GT-14 got a 54" blade. So the most common long-frame blade assemblies should have the parts you need I think. The 1/2" rod is 31-1/2" long center to center of the bends. The front bend is up and the rear bend is to the right. You can use a spring pin it the front but use a cotter pin in the rear where it is not protected from accidentally being pulled out. The lever is 5/16" x 1-1/4" flat stock 38" tall. The 1/2" hole for the rod is centered 3/4" from the end and the pivot hole center is 7-1/2" above the center of the rod hole. My lever gets bent over time so the 3/8" x 2" flat stock you have should work well. With the blade straight ahead you should make sure the 31-1/2" to the lever pivot on the A-frame is correct. At that point the lever should be straight up and down. My blade is a 1988 model 06-48BC01 Garry

3 pointsDeck support greased underneath and top of deck greased where support contacts it to help prevent rust between these. Spindles and deck support installed. Spindles greased and pulleys installed. Belt tension assembly installed. Belt installed. Left hand guard installed and right hand guard bracket installed. The rest of the brackets will be installed in a few days.

2 pointsI bought this tractor last fall at an auction thinking I would resell it. And I have sold the cab and the deck. But I was so impressed with its snow plowing this winter, now I will keep it for my primary mower and snow plower. The only problem ...I can't deal with the hand motion control. Luckily this one has the lever on the console so it makes it an easy conversion to a foot control like my 520H blower. I changed the ZEE slot to a straight slot , remover the spring that pulls the lever right, and bent the lever to vertical. I do not recommend this to anyone, but I removed the neutral position switch and connected the wiring to the parking brake instead. Now, to start the tractor, you must be in the seat and have the parking brake engaged, which forces the motion control to neutral. IMO, this is a safer starting lock out system than the original factory system. I am also considering wiring the seat and parking brake switches in parallel so if you leave the seat, you must engage the parking brake first to keep the tractor running. Anyway, that's where I am so far. I still need to make some connections from the lever to the foot pedal. I must say though, the mods I have made to the hand control make this tractor so much easier and smoother to drive and change direction with the hand control, I probably wouldn't add the foot pedal for mowing, but I want a free hand to operate the lift when snow plowing.

2 pointsThis road was built back in the late 1970s on the mountain behind my house. It was used as a core drilling road. The wood I rolled off the mountain is below this road and I couldn't get to it with any machinery besides my 4 wheeler. This road now has trees grown up int it, in addition to some rocks and dirt slide off the bank onto the road. Now that I have access to my late father in law's Case tractor, I can use it to pull firewood out of the woods on this road. Of course, I don't want to damage the Case, so I took the Wheelhorse out to work the road. I needed to move sharp rocks, trees, and whatever else might bust a tire on the Case. I think the rear tires on that thing are just under $1,000.00 each. That's my story anyway. Actually, I just like to grade a road, make that any road, with the Wheelhorse. And this is a compilation of 3 or 4 different road grading excursions. I speeded it up quite a bit, so it wouldn't be to long. I have worked about 1/2 a mile of the road that is on my property. After I filmed all this, I went back with the chain saw and cut some of the trees that would get in the way of the Case. This coming weekend I may film a ride over the road on the ATV and show the results of all this grading. It looks pretty good now, to hear me tell it. And if any of you have ever pulled logs, you know that they have a tendency to grade the road themselves.

2 pointsThat is a very sweet looking set up. One safety tip on the dual rear wheels, keep the pressure on the outer tires low to prevent the possibility of damaging the rear axle if the rear tires are on uneven surfaces.

2 pointsRare to Medium Rare for me. I have how I did it written down, but with out looking...I seared it on all sides 1st, then seasoned with salt and pepper (patted in on all sides). Cooked at like 350 for an hour and then about 250 for about 3 hours until the thermometer hit like 227. Then let it rest covered for an hour. It came out with that nice crust on the outside and between red and pink inside. It was my first time for that...won't be the last. Some garlic butter on the baked potato...and a few spears of asparagus. AU JUS!!! Apetizer...oysters on the half shell.

2 pointsToo much for a 12, yes it can be used but it will task that motor to its fullest thus putting more wear and tear on the motor. Because it's a hydro you are gonna loose some hp from the get go. In my opinion I would not put it on a 12.

2 pointsOK...looking to wrap up my part in this thread. These next pictures are of building the 2nd transmission (a Suburban #5010). A shot of the completed differential. Starting to build on the side plate. We needed to find a good casing with all the bolt holes in place. Managed to get one from Brian01 in Missouri. As you can see the forks are broke off and the reverse idler is rusted in place. I put this in the Electrolysis tank for a few days to loosen things up. That tank works great. I robbed the welded casting of it's shift rails, forks, detente balls and stop with spring. I also replaced the reverse idler and it's shaft. I had some left over gasket material, so I decided to cut a couple gaskets. That tool in my hand is a 5/16" hole punch (ACE hardware). Place your material on a piece of cardboard and just tap the hole with a ball peen hammer. I cut the inside out with scissors and I trim the outside excess with a razor knife when complete. The excess material on the outside is nice to have for adjusting the gasket. Just a picture of the spline shaft and gears in this trans. And, finally...here is a shot of the back of my truck loaded for Mentone to give all this back to Lane. Final total....1 complete RJ #5003 trans, 1 complete Suburban #5010, with another good case...the parts to put another Suburban #5010 together, and we are just short a few pinions, differential, axle gear from a 4th trans that is going to RacinBob..
