Decided on a bit of a tidy up, so put the horses to work in the woods moving a few tons of stone. Some pieces were pretty big and required special treatment....project bendy handled it with ease One of my sons tried to help but his C-121 is no match for the slope out - lucky for him we could tow him out Here's a few pics and a video... http://youtu.be/La0LFlOp6a0

Just got back from going around with the kids trick and treating. We go up to a house..I spot red way way way back in the corner of the property. Said to my son mike...geez. wonder if that's a wheel horse. Next thing I know Mike is waving to me from the steps. Hey dad..it is. The homeowner wants to get rid of it. My wife sighs..it go flying up to meet the guy....he bought it about 5 years ago. He said it had a diferant engine in it. Hood don't close all the way. One tire in front half flat. Just stopped running couple weeks back. The gent says tell ya what....for 50 bucks you can have it. If no rain tomorrow I will get more pics...just took one and left. Kids were anxious to get back to Halloween stuff. What do you guys think. The metal looked ok. Deck looked super....can I find a motor..think it's worth a follow up? Let's hear advice.. will post more pictures maybe tomorrow. Ty

I destroyed my old puller. It was an old GM front hub puller from the 80's and I tore the threads out of the cast housing. I got some 3/8 plate at an auction pile. I ordered 7/8" fine grade 5 rod for a forcing scrwew and super heavy nuts from McMaster-Carr. I took it all plus a hub to my fabricator friend and had him go to town. He welded 2 plates together for strength, 2 nuts for a large thread area and welded a nut to the rod for turning. I'm using 5 7/16" x 2" fine bolts to thread into the hub and will back them up with nuts. Who knows how long it will be before I need to pull another hub. I will post results.

this is my barn find, sort-of. my dad bought this 1974 D200 somewhere around 1975 or 1976. not sure when we parked it in the barn, but we know it was in there in oct of 1987 when the house burnt. the front of the barn was open and dad didn't want people to have access to the content with nobody living on the property so we closed the front of the barn in. the poor old D200 sat there for another 19 years until the fall of 2006 when he finally let me dig it out, at one time i offered dad $ 500.00 for it and his response was why one day it will be yours anyways. so i dug it out which was not an easy task in it self. i took it up the road to a friend of mine curvie, even though he was in his 90's got it running again. it had i, believe 397 hrs showing. the mufflers were completely rotted off so i replaced them. never did get the turning brakes working again. me and this tractor have a long history together since dad bought it when i was a teenager. i hope to pass it down to one of my kid or at least somebody in my family. someday i will have to start a thread on it . now it is showing a little over 400 hrs i would have to double check on that might be 410 hrs martin you wanted barn find tractors here's mine eric j

lost my senses awhile back and bought this wheel horse senior that needs help bad. It started when I called about an add on craigslist from a gentleman selling a wheel horse collection but there were no pictures or any tractors listed. when I called I asked what do you have for sale and he replied what are you looking for Sooo for the heck of it I said a wheel horse senior there was a moment of silence then he said I have one but I was not going to sell it . so we talked for awhile and found out we knew who each other was from the wheel horse show he was looking for some information I had so we traded e-mail address and hung up later I e-mailed him the information we was looking for and told him that if he ever decides to sell the senior to let me know. about two months went by and I received an e-mail from him wondering if I was still interested in buying the senior well one thing lead to another and a deal was made and now I have my work cut out for me too save this one this one will be a learning experience Brian

Without pics its hard to put a value on it but............$1500 seems way to high unless its was a fresh minty mint restored machine with receipts. The plow is a $200 item, the deck maybe $300, so is the tractor alone worth $1000. Not in my opinion. I'll toss out a $$ without pics........$800 max. Mike.........

I figured I’d post this one again. A 1972 Commando 800 and one of my favorite rebuilds. Purchased in the mid 80’s by my Mom, she used it in the original configuration for close to 20 years before her health told her no more. This is a well traveled Commando 800. I hauled it from northern Indiana down here and tore it completely down. The picture was dated 2005 and was taken in my backyard down here. I’m not sure if the camera date was set right but that sounds pretty close. The aging paint was stripped and repainted with Regal Red. The rear tires were upsized to 22-7.50 from my 76 B-80 as well as the original seat from that tractor, adding the seat pan for more leg room. Once completed the original 36†RD deck went back on and I hauled it back to Indiana for my grandson who is still using it on their 14 acres.

Here Here on getting things checked out. I was feeling run down this past Tues. and had on and off heartburn. My Doctor convinced me to go to the ER. Most tests showed nothing unusual but 1 blood test raised a tiny flag. I got sent to a bigger hospital and ended up needing 2 stents in my LAD artery. I'm feeling like myself again.

Working three horses with Sundstrand hydros and knowing that the day would surely one day come when I’d need to fix one of them I acquired a ‘for spares or repairs’ C-121 auto early this year Described as having an engine that was reluctant to start but will move forwards and backwards I found that whilst it was strong in both directions the hydro takes a while to jump into action once you’ve finally managed to get the engine going. It’s a fault that’s appeared on the forum before and had clearly existed on this tractor for many years judging by the way the keyways on the hubs and axles had been totally destroyed by the jolting action, so much so in fact that a bolt through the axle and hub had been added on one side to transfer drive and keep the hub on! For the price I paid, it would provide an ideal opportunity to have a go at the disassembly and re-assembly of a hydro pump and motor without putting any of my fleet at risk. A nice little ‘no pressure’ learning exercise for the winter was in the offing. Seemed like a good scheme until only a few weeks later the hydro on my D-200 died, it had been working hard with no warning signs or sounds when it failed. Guessing that the symptoms i.e. no motion and no implement lift function could mean the splines on the pump drive had stripped (though I’ve learnt by now not to try second guessing Sundstrand faults) there was no option but to move the three point and ram etc across to my other D-200 for the season and the winter project now needed a bit of re-thinking. If I could cure the fault on the C-121 transmission and it was in otherwise good order I could perhaps use the motor from it for the D but there would be a problem with the pump in that the motion control shaft is on the opposite side for a D series resulting in needing to use some parts from the original D series pump to put together a suitable arrangement. What I really needed was a good pump with motion control shaft available on the correct side but here in the UK D series tractors rarely come up for sale, good hydros from one being parted out, never to my knowledge! Lady Luck smiled on me in September when a complete C-161 transaxle with believed to be good hydro appeared on a well known site and I managed to grab it for the starting bid price . In terms of the hydro, it’s a Sundstrand 90-1173, same as used on the later D series, and has a ‘universal’ motion control shaft which protrudes from either side of the pump casing – The tractor had been parted as the engine was beyond repair so there was a good chance the hydro was indeed good but that would need testing. To do this has meant putting the transmission onto the C-121, getting the engine to start and testing it out thoroughly. It went well in both directions then the real test of confronting an immoveable object with it. Even with weight on the seat, the rear tyres continued to excavate the surface of the drive so I guess the hydro can be considered to be good to use. It appears then that I have enough bits to stand a reasonable chance of getting the D-200 going again using the pump and motor from this transmission. It also means that I’ll be left with a good transaxle which I could use with the pump and motor unit from the C-121 and maybe that tractor is worth saving after all rather than being parted. If I can manage all of this then finally I get my chance with the old D pump and motor to have a go at disassembly and inspection etc. Trying to put all of this into a logical order, I’m going to take the head off the engine to hopefull find out what's up with it while the C-121 still has a good tranny attached and, while the 'jolting' tranny is off, I'll check out the acceleration valves as a first step. I don’t have the time to be working on the project every day at the moment but I’ll keep you posted on progress and I’ll more than likely be needing to pick the brains of those of you with knowledge and experience. Hints, tips and advice always welcome.

Glenn - you probably don't want to spend the time on it. Not really woth mcuh, honest! Why would you pay $50.00 for something not running? It probably has more tricks, than treats, associated with it...... BTW, where did you say this place was??? Nice score Glenn! Rob

Just remember, most questions like this are answered in the Kohler K-series service manual which is free for downloading from our manuals section. Figure 1-6 on page 1.7, and 12-44 on page 12.17 show the torque values and sequence. Section 12.16 also describes the procedure for proper torquing, running for 15 minutes, allowing to cool, and retorquing.

Hi Molacker..... If I were you at this point....I would take the tins and carb off the engine....(get carb kit )....plug any openings like the intake and then powerwash it using something like simple green as a grease cutter.... drain the oil from the tranny then hang that carcass that you have left on the cherry picker and do the same thing...... Then power wash the tins you have off..... wipe any water off using a spray and wipe wax.... change the oil in the tranny and motor when back together....get a new boot for the shifter if rotten.....enjoy!!!! Oh yeah....take that old mule off the front tachomatic too....lol....doesn't have pulleys any way...save it for a future homemade attachment........ And get a new seat.....

So, with bitten and Hodge to pick yet...I am the only Northwestern fan this week...what am I missing here?? The stars are in alignment, the QB's are ready, the horses are facing West, Iowa is afraid to cross the goal line and I have squeezed the heck out of a doughnut. I have even invented a new cocktail for my Wheel Horse mug...a Bloody Maria...WOW!!! If the guys in the basement start getting Breakfast Burritos (and there is a good chance JimD will not be alone after this weekend)...I am going into free fall and count me in, but I just can't believe that Burrly1 has got all you guys thinking that Iowa can win at home against Northwestern. You have them all hood-winked John...Thanks Mate. See...the defense can't cross the goal line either.

YIPPEE!!!! Today was sheet metal paint day!! Used BASF products, 4 stage, well, 5 if you include primer, but 4 in the finish layer!! First we applied 2 coats of white base ... Then in the second stage comes the cool stuff ... 2 coats of Arctic Ice White ... this is where we make everything look like we were at a strip club!! LOL It's really hard to see in the photo ... These were all done with 10 min flash time between coats .... Now the first coat of Candy Apple Red ... Looks good, but way too "pink"!! ... so ... the second coat ... Now we're talkin' ... but still not there!!! Try coat number 3 ... then add 4 coats of clear ... AND..... WOW .. that's sharp!! Let dry till Monday AM, wet sand and buff, then start boltin' together!! FINALLY!!

h60 is an aluminum block, hh60 is a cast iron block with a 1 inch shaft size. I think the h60's are 3/4 inch shaft? I believe they originally had the cast iron block hh60' on the 500's. If you aren't concerned about the correct cops coming to your door then I would just roll with whatever nice one come's down the pike first.

Well, I thought, since it is November 1st. and I did no mowing in November that I would get things started for the winter season.... Took the deck off, and prepped it for spring, hung it on the back wall of the garage greased the tractor washed and waxed the tractor mounted the snowblower mounted the rear weights - 60lbs Between the rear weights, wheel weights, and myself, there is close to 400lbs. of added weight to the drive axles.. Seemed to really help last year, the additional weight in the back. All I have left is to mount the cab and put the chains on.

You're getting there. Just for clarification, there was no such thing as a 5HP Tecky ever put on any ever made, ever. In 60, 61 + 62 they had a Tecky 5.5HP engine, in 63 and up they went to a 6HP until 68 (the year yours is).

For raised letters like those cast in the metal - or other - this little gizmo does a fantastic job and cheap too. An artist ink roller... Find a piece of cardboard, something like a cereal box - so it wont suck up the paint and smear/spray a slightly wet coat of your paint on it. Using the roller work the paint so its covering the entire surface, not too wet (sort of like painting a wall) then roll the paint over the raised letters -- gently, dont bear down too much, you want it on TOP of the letters, may take 2-3 runs to get good coverage. I was into rebuilding machinery - lathes milling machines, etc, and there was a lot of this type lettering on them and I would get so frustrated trying to get them looking good --- My lovely bride put me onto this roller. http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/4-hard-rubber-ink-brayer-453035/

As more and more time passes our decks are getting more and more scarce and necessitates some drastic steps to keep them in use - and some other horse parts too!! This is one that was REALLY bad, but I figured I didnt have anything to lose by taking that huge chunk out of the middle of it. And, it did warp a bit but doggone if the thing doesnt cut pretty good. I had in mind to have it dedicated for use as strictly a leaf/pine straw 'picker-up' deck to use with my 'Cyclone' vacuum and it does that well.
