14 pointsWell, its off to Vegas for my daughters 21st birthday and time is a bit short. If anyones interested in a short 5 minute video I threw together of Scott's North Central Indiana Meet and Greet Have at it. Not my best work but the pressure to provide quality pictures and video to keep all of you happy is killing me! :*****: Enjoy------

5 pointsI've spent the last weeks of summer getting this little darling ready to go. I got it off a JD from a scrapyard in Minnesota for $350. 400 pounds of solid steel, tempered glass windows, WIper, defroster fan. Mice ate the wiring, so I had to rewire, and added front floodlights. The original cowling around the hood didn't fit due to the muffler. I made a new one out of Lexan, and am waiting on molding from McMaster-Carr rated to 450 degrees. I don't think the exhaust will melt that, but we will see. Mounting was a PIA, but I was able to modify the front mounts by reinforcing the footrests. Mounted to the frame, there was too much sway. Moving the mounts farther apart solved that problem. The rear sits on the seatpan for sway control, but most of the weight is in the rear hitch. I am doing the best I can sealing out the weather, and the vinyl matting over the footrests will solve most of the problems when fully installed.

3 pointsMost of you already know I got this 417 via a trade with my brother... I spent a few hrs. cleaning and detailing it, now that its all clean I guess its time to get it dirty! I trailer a trailer down to my Dadfs house to mow his lawn which I will do tomm. I wish the grass would stop growing. Today I adjusted the governor so its a little more sensitive and adjusted the throttle cable and throttle stop. I put a tach on it because the throotle response seemed a little soft, it was only reaching 3000 rpm's. Much better now! Here are a few pics, one next to my other 417 with forward swept...

3 pointsWhat a beautiful setting for such an event! I only wish I wasn't so far away.. Was there an official head count? Looks like the place was packed! My favorite pics are of the many different shots of Scott cruising the kiddies around with the wagon train. Its hard to tell who was havin more fun, Scott, or the kiddies!

2 pointsSome of you may have been following my latest 4x4, inspired by Bob Rock and a few others. It's taken a while, but today I finally fastened the tin work on and borrowed my sons C-121 hood - (sorry Ewan), its still also still 4x2 for the pics and video - I needed the tin work in place before I finished the idler and 4WD select/difflock. Seat is almost the right height, just the housing to tidy up and springs to add. and the obligatory video

2 pointsSome of you know I've been in the market to replace my 1996, 314-H, blower and cab with a "new" tractor. Nothing wrong with the 314. I just needed something that was easier to get in and out of and that would last for the next 20-30 years. I wanted a tractor similar to the 314-H with hydro Trans and lift, at least a single stage 40+" blower and snow cab and lots of power. I narrowed the field to the John Deere X300 and X500 series. The 500 series has a locking transaxle. After researching the different models I decided on either the X530 or X540. The difference between the 530 and 540 was water cooled and tilt steering. After looking at new and a couple of used models I decided that if I was going to spend this kind of money on the last "new" tractor I intend to have I might as well get a new one. I decided on the John Deere X530, 24hp, air cooled, hydrostatic Trans, power steering, HDAP rear tires, 54" deck, 47" two stage snowblower with a 4 year warranty. I added suitcase weights and an Original Tractor Cab, snow cab. Coming soon are a pair of LED lights that were on my Polaris. Here are the obligatory pictures. Here's the cab. I love this cab. It's even sturdier than the cub cab that was on my 314.

2 pointsI see what you are saying. Definitely should be a concern on a C series where the exhaust is at the low left front near the air intake. My post above was with reference to a 520H. I certainly don't want anyone to assume all heated cabs are safe. Each set up should be looked at individually for safety faults.

2 pointsI've only been to one show that let you park with your display "swap meet style" and that was Portage Wisconsin at Garden Tractor Daze. Even that may be coming to an end if the show keeps growing. All other shows I've been to have designated show area and parking areas. Most shows allow ez-up style tents in the display areas or similar canopies for sitting or displaying in the shade... but not all. Some disallow it for liability reasons.

2 pointsGeno, the motor home would be nice... but in your case you'll need an 18 wheeler for all your stuff & like Dino said ... .....
-
2 pointsGreat show and awesome video. Thanks for posting it all. It's the next best thing to being there!
-
2 pointsBob's right...each show seems to have it own rules about that...but all of the shows that I have gone to have an area for the horses and the camping/parking is in a separate area. I think it is usually a space thing...some of these shows do not have the room for the campers and horses together.

2 pointsWell I went out this morning and mad up a heavy jumper this time . I bolted it to the coil + and to the bat + I started it and after it was running I discounted the whole harness. It ran!! I drove it around and mowed with it for over and hr. The only thing I have off is the air filter assembly. This was the longest it has ran for me so far. I didn’t realize that it still keeps running when I turn the key off because of the jumper. I unhooked the jumper, Then I reconnected the harness at the white connector. I put the jumper back on and it actually restarted (Hallelujah) But it started to backfire and run rough so I disconnected the harness while it was running and it continued to run and straightened out. I wonder if the harness was my problem all the time? So far I have replaced the ignition module, coil , key switch, starter solenoid, condenser but that is alright as this is the first time I have put this much into it in almost 30 years ! I do notice some small air bubbles at times in the gas filter when its running, is this suppose to be this way ? I never really looked at it this hard before. Should I hook the old coil back up? I left it in its hole and didn’t remove it?

2 pointsIf you are referring to the WHCC show, all RV's must be parked in designated camping areas. If you want to display your stuff there that's fine, but it won't be seen by most. Other shows have different rules. I know the Little Guys show and Older Tyme Days allow them in the display area.

2 pointsI do a lot of small driveways where I do lot of backing up, so I feel the foot control is a must to keep one hand free to operate the hydo lift. I find I can step in the left side and swing my 180 lbs over the seat without much trouble. I keep my 520H in a heated garage and with the amount of heat pumped into the cab thru the vented belt guard, I will be blowing snow in sneakers shorts and a Tee shirt.

2 pointsAwesome video!!!!!...You caught the the show perfect,,It dont get any better than that!!! Thanks Michael D Conley amazing work!!!!
-
2 pointsWow that was just outstanding! That might be the most watched video on Youtube today!!!!!!!!!

2 pointsPicked it up in Morris.... here it is prior to being cleaned up. 1996 520H with 649 hours. Came with mint 48" mower deck, plow and tiller. Needs to be cleaned and a battery. I also gave Gnlark (Matt) a lead on a 54' Hiller close to me so I had to pick that up for him as well.

2 pointsFrom the looks of this 57 year old photo, I started working on engines & mowers at the age of 2!!
-
2 pointsThank Lars. Here is the update as of today. I plan on working with them tomorrow and install the flooring on the upper level so they have a walk area to install the upper beams.
-
2 pointsThe explanation is simple. The football gods have gotten into Duke's apple juice and toilet cakes! How else would you explain the Brownies coming from behind to win again and Romo not blowing a game late. Even the Bears couldn't beat ( as a drunk Dougie Buffone calls them) a "tomato can " team like Carolina! I'm going to sandblast my sun dial and polish my Ouija board before picking this week!
-
2 pointsMichael D Conley has given me so many photos that you guys will see so much eye candy that it is ridiculous. These are just a few of the many amazing shots taken! Hopefully I haven't doubled up on the photos.....hope you enjoy!

1 pointI guess what I picture is exhaust fumes being drawn into the flywheel side and then pushed in. Exhaust/ fumes can carry pretty far and with the right condition....... But I guess being in open atmosphere. There is little to no worry what so ever. Just a thought / concern.
-
1 pointI don't see any possible way exhaust could get into the cab on my 520H. THIS MAY NOY BE TRUE ON OTHER TRACTORS. The heat is being pumped from the lower rear cylinder through holes in the belt guard. The muffler exhaust is at the front top of the engine. Even if the exhaust manifold or muffler were leaking, The pressure inside the cab should be higher than atmosphere, preventing any exhaust from entering the cab. I believe this pressurizing of the cab with clean hot air from the rear cylinder actually would prevent any bad air from entering the cab. If the cab completely enclosed the engine including the exhaust manifold and muffler like some heat housers on the large tractors, then the possibility of getting exhaust in the cab does exist.

1 pointThey are just called "one-wire" alternators now, those don't need any regulation circuitry. Available with a V-belt pulley and usually made for crate engines like the Chevy 350 @ about 60 amps. Fair enough about the battery maintenance, personally I would try going for a hydro setup. You could find a c-series with the Eaton 1100 cheap enough and its relatively simple to add another valve and piston to the system from a donor tractor. (the valves can stack i believe, so you would just need to do a little plumbing) I think it would be a lot easier than trying to mount up an alternator, and find a mounting place for the electric-hydraulic pump. (This is all assuming you are using the setup from an old snowplow like someone mentioned above.) If you are just doing a linear actuator (which i think is what you are suggesting at 1/4 hp), I think you would be perfectly fine using the tractors charging system as long as you aren't going up an down repeatedly and quickly. Maybe just put the largest "lawn and garden' battery that fits without modification.
