3 pointsOK everybody, here are the pics! Didn't get them posted yesterday due to having to work overtime. I hope you enjoy them.
-
3 pointsHere are a few more pictures of the Sycamore Show from my I phone. Water Tank for the Steam Tractors
-
2 pointsAll 3 tecumseh carbs I have in my parts stash have 10-32 screws to hold the air cleaner on, 1//2" long should be ample.
-
2 pointsWell my stepmom called me and said if I wanted the rest of my dad's tractors, come get them. So needless to say you know what I did this afternoon. I know I got a 312-8 with a magnum 12 in it, think I got a c81 and not sure on the last one. It has a k241 in it. Not sure if any of the motors are original. Try to get better pics later. Ran out of light.
-
2 pointsGet it hot, run it for at least 20 min to 30 min just warming up. Then find a tree, light pole or any immovable object. Bring motor up to power, then engage drive. If tires spin you should have a good trans. If it sits there and groans and doesn't do anything, run run run the opposite direction/ Chains look like four or six link. I'd lose those
-
2 pointsTires didn't look all that bad. New ones are pricey, As other have stated how does it run when heated up? Get her hot then try to push some dirt around. You are buying a basic snowplow tractor what is that worth to you? Ds are not the most efficient or easiest to use device if you want to cut grass...plus a deck will cost you more $$$. I would stay closer to 500.

1 pointPics will be coming this week. Don't worry. Today I finally found the elusive "M16 Magnum Powered" Wheel Horse 416-8. I have been looking for one of these for several years now. My other 416-8 is "K" powered. I know basically the K's and the M's are the same powerplant but I really really wanted a Magnum. This one came with a 42" SD deck, trailer hitch, tiller bracket, and lift system for a tiller or plow. There are 748 hours showing on a working hour meter. Also has a new battery. It starts right up and runs good hot or cold. I am feeling very good tonight about this purchase. The seat has seen much better days (but then again so have I). Next I bought a non running 1995 312 Hydro. Why its not running I could not tell you. Its all together except for the wiring harness. The wiring harness has been hacked on by someone who had no idea what they were doing. There are a little over 900 hours showing on the meter. I'm looking forward to seeing if the engine will run. I would not think there is a problem with the hydro as the only thing someone was working on was the wiring. I'll give an update on that one later. I know, I know you guys want pics. Well first I have to go back to the previous owner's house tomorrow and pick up the 312. Its bought and paid for but my trailer will only haul one at a time. I'll take some pics and post them first of the week. But for now this is what I have to report. I will be changing the engine oil in the 416 tomorrow. Getting rid of the whatever oil and giving it some good oid Lubrication Engineers 30w.
-
1 pointThats it! Wow,I paid less that half of what they are going for, for each set. Two sets were found at this years show.
-
1 pointOne thing I do have to say, Martin's 416 looks better in person that it does in his rebuild thread. Outstanding job Martin! I'd love to have that in my garage. I hear you were offering rides..... after I left.
-
1 pointHeres my commando 8 with the narrow frame plow on it ive moved lots of dirt gravel and snow with it
-
1 point
-
1 pointIf you are using the plow for snow there is no need for weight if you are spreading dirt the weight will come in handy
-
1 pointPersonally I find the weight of the plow itself is plenty. I would think all that added weight will just wear out the cutting edge quicker. Mike..........
-
1 pointI bought one of these a few years back. http://www.tractordata.com/lawn-tractors/000/4/8/484-wheel-horse-lawn-ranger.html I am starting to do work to the engine and have found that it probably needs some type of new ignition. I also have been having trouble with the linkage for the carb. Question is should I just look for a replacement engine of some sort or rebuild this Tech that is there? I am sure a vert shaft engine shouldn't be too hard to come by. Thanks for any help. Jim

1 pointGeno, you're starting to tick me off. Will you leave some red for other folks? Better yet, send some down here. I like the idea of the weights but the dangling would drive me even nuttier than I already am. I think those are old window counter weights. It amazes me how many uses those things have been used for.
-
1 pointI'd really like to hear that CHIME PLOW play "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas".
-
1 pointDid some more work today. Gave it a third power wash. Then moved it up on my rolling work bench. I left the frame attached for now as I can manipulate the transmission easier this way. Built the bench so that I can sit on a roll around seat or have it at a good height when I stand. Makes it more comfortable for me. Less bending over and my back likes it better. Took some time to wire brush part of it. Had to quit early today as I have a must attend meeting at 6:00 PM.
-
1 pointI split your question out... and added your picture to your post. It's much easier to get a clean answer in your own topic rather than piggy-backed on another discussion.

1 pointShould be like near 80...maybe high 70's this year. Mike, if there is any wild life on the course, they will know to stand in the middle of the fairway when I swing. That is the safest place.
-
1 pointSounds like it is in the differential Ed...axle gear, pinions or the spring. Just did a thread on a 6 speed, 10 pinion, limited slip. Take a look. You 5073 works and looks like this 5060. The noise you hear is the spring rubbing on the pinions...I would think some noise is normal. You may want to open it up to see if the spring is bent or broke, or if any teeth are missing on the pinions or axle gears. You do not have to take out the rest of the gears in the trans, the differential will just pull right out. Make sure you have the shallow or input shaft side of the trans down when you open it.
-
1 pointMaybe you got it from me at lunch last week. There were 3 of them close to me on CL, 2-200's + a 180 with tons of attachments, 2 finish mowers, plows, decks, + more for 1500.00 They were on there a long time. Nice tractors but not common enough to get parts for and can be a pain in the butt to work on for sure. You aughtta see where they put the hydro.
-
1 pointThese are some pics I found once. I couldn't mount one on mine as it has the easy ride seat. the seat spring tower uses the bolt holes and block the fans location.
-
1 pointAwesome work guys, my C-161 has a 103916 as I've borrowed that transmission for project bendy. This transmission will be rebuilt and become the front trans for bendy. I'm sure it's more than up to the job! Mark
-
1 pointI have a buddy with a D160 that he went through mechanically and it runs really nice. It needs paint etc and cannot sell it for $700 with no attachments. I would tell him to try and sell it on CL for what he wants and if it does not sell in a week or so then he should call you and you can talk. this way he "tried" to get his money for it (which he will not) and you both feel better if you agree on a price of around $750...
-
1 pointthis show has had this GT problem for several yrs, and its one of the reason I don't attend it any more. The last time it came up big, the rumor was the Gt's wouldn't be allowed to plow. Its a shame, as the garden area had many entry's, and was getting bigger.
-
1 pointSounds like you had a great day Van! I haven't had Waffle House in 15 yrs. I ate there everyday for a month while I was in McDonough, GA. Man, I miss Waffle House. Yes I really said that and I mean it. Lookin forward to the pics Van!
-
1 pointMine travels faster in reverse as well and tends to creep forward in "neutral", I think the issue has to do with the linkage being out of adjustment. The Eaton hydro manual has a process for adjusting the motion control which I believe will fix the problem. Am very interested in seeing how yours turns out, I think more black in the color scheme would look nice.
-
1 pointThese are all "garden tractors" and as such are very capable of moving snow, plowing a garden and anything else that they were designed to do. When you start making pulling tractors out of these horses...that is when you get into the number of pinions and the diameter of the axle.
-
1 pointA little more progress...... Fired right up after I cut out that Molex connector and installed my own version of quick disconnects.....Runs, drives...although reverse is faster than forward..... I guess that is the next thing to figure out.... I don't want to mow in reverse...lol More to come tonight I hope!!
-
1 pointPM sent. Thought the PM's were for the people that were not going to be there...sorry.

1 pointWhat an absolutely gorgeous weather weekend! Friday and Saturday, fair weather, temps around 70-75... and sitting in the shade with a light breeze. What could be better? Oh... yeah, enjoying that weather with some tractor buds! Here's my pics from Sycamore. Terry and Denny An interesting modified Suburban to front engine Denny and Terry There was a 1054 in the flea market... so of course Lane was spotted there! Unknown local club member who was there participating in the WWII military display on this B-series with early 60s fenders. Steve and Dave Terry and Steve Wingrider and Terry And now a few other shots around the show….. This guy bought this Holder off a scrap pile missing many parts and not even knowing what it was for a long time. Never heard of this one before… Someone’s clever little ½ scale Cub Cadet Other random shots And last... a couple of the big boys. This 1916 Illinois Engine was making it's debut at the show. It is owned by the club, purchased in 2003, and has just finally had restoration completed. It was built locally in Sycamore, IL. This is one of 65 built, 6 are still known to exist, only 3 of which run. Again, what a great show, couldn't ask for better weather or company. Was glad to get to hang out with these guys for a couple days. Looking forward to seeing Steve and Terry again this weekend at the Le Sueur MN Pioneer Power show.

1 pointis hilarious! Kinda like saying we might see some sunshine in Florida. Rob
-
1 pointGreat pics of a great show Steve and Terry! David and I had a great time and enjoyed catching up with all the Red Square members in attendance. The Sycamore Show is as good as Steve says it is -that's for sure! I just got home after five days in northern Indiana and Illinois-but I need to get these posted! Here are a few of the pics I took at the show!
-
1 pointYes the new barn is finished. Should have built it bigger !!! LOL Mike I'm right there with you regarding Kohler Magnum powered anythings! OK, time for the latest report. Arrived at the sellers house to find he had the 312 sitting in the circle drive waiting on me to get there. We pushed it up on the trailer and away I went....... home, but not without stopping at the local Waffle House for some waffles, eggs, bacon, toast, grits (yes I said grits), and coffee. It takes alot of food to successfully transport Wheel Horses around North Carolina. By the time I got home it was already 94 degrees. I rolled the 312 in the shop. I'm waiting for a cooler day to work on it. Then I run the 416 until the engine was at operating tempreture, and drained out all the old engine oil. Now the Kohler Magnum is happy with almost 3 quarts of LE 30w in it. The PO had just changed the transmission oil. It is full right up to the mark, the shifter boot is intact so no need to do anything there. All the lights work including the tail lights. Checked the charging system. There is a strong 13.95vdc going to the battery. All good there too! Wish I could tell you I did all this great and wonderful stuff to the 312 but again, thats a cooler day project. Instead I had to get on the big red tractor and work a bunch of crushed stone into the new driveway I've built to now have a circle drive. That was just too much work to do with a Wheel Horse. I needed power steering and diesel power for that project. So anyway guys, that was my day. Starting another week of overtime tomorrow. Been working overtime all Summer. Thats why I have not been here very much since the big show. Oh yeah, almost forgot, yes I took some pics! I'll post them tomorrow.
-
1 pointThanks for the info Martin. I have that wiring diagram now but couldn't be sure until your post. As far as liking Onans...you're right, they're not my favorite engine in any way shape or form. I would have been a lot happier finding my Dad a 418. But this thing is in super shape even though it was so dirty. I replaced that molex connector today and she fired right up once fuel got to the bowl. I still think a Kohler 16 sounds better.....

1 pointLola, I always find it hard to come up with the right words at times like these. Just know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and family at this time.
-
1 pointBeing a "good winner" seems to be a lost art these days, thanks for building you son's character!
-
1 pointLucky Boy! All smiles as it should be! You should be ashamed of yourself infecting the youngsters with Wheel Horse Addiction! My two sons have WHA too! Our 1st Horse (forget the model) was 'bout 40 years ago. We did own a few Cubs along the way, not bad. Not the big box thingys of today.
-
1 pointNope you didn't miss it Chuck. I received the art work this morning and will be starting a separate thread here soon for ordering details. Here is what the designs are.....I believe I will be going with the one on the right. If you also notice we are going with red shirts this year!
-
1 pointjust watched the differential video, Steve. nicely done. i like the fact that you didn't edit it in anyway, it shows us through your work what to look out for and what problems we may come across while assembling. going to watch the others now!! so does this mean that you have now joined the hi/lo rebuilders club?
-
1 pointI would say that most of the problems with the techy carb and cleaning it and still not running right is the fact that you can not get to the place the carb clogs up just taking it apart and soaking it will not clean the low speed passage which is the place 90% of them clog up you have to remove a brass plug from the carb body to gain access there is a small metal rod in this passage also.with the bass plug removed you can get the metal rod out and use a pipe cleaner and spray carb cleaner on the passage way to clean it a fast check to tell if you have a clogged low speed passage is with the carb off the tractor remove the jets, bowl ,float, needle hold the carb body next you your ear and shake it up and down you should hear a clink of the small metal rod moving back and forth in it's passage way if it does not the passage way is clogged up Brian
-
1 pointVery cool, I bet you were so siked to finally see it outside, and get to start playing with it a little. Out of curiosity, were you guys making "vroom vroom" noises when you sat behind the wheel? lol In all seriousness though, it is quite astonishing to see this, and I really enjoy watching this unfold. Keep it up!
-
1 pointPicked up a 1980 D-160 today. I only really wanted the tractor and mowing deck but it had to be bought as a set. It came with a 48" deck, a snow-blower that I will probably never use, a homemade weight box for the 3 point hitch and a tub type trailer. It also has the rear PTO although I have no attachments for that part. Heres the pics. Mike........
