3 pointsMy wife and I love hiking and looking for remnants of old home sites in the park. We were hiking in an area this time that was told to us to be where Dolly Parton's parents and family had lived. We came across this old chimney There were some old pots in the chimney an old wash tub near a spring house and some other unidentifiable metal objects surrounding the area. I continued down the foot path looking for more artifacts and came within one step of stepping on this fellow. His head was facing the other direction until I backed away to a safe distance and began yelling for the wife to bring the camera.Thank goodness. Came across this interesting fungi. If I googled correctly this is called a stinkhorn. Thanks for looking Mark

2 pointsI was asked recently if I would give a home to 'George' whose owner had died several years ago and had been left outside to the elements ever since. I figured a 520-h would make a good stablemate for my 312-8 which as my only tractor, gets no rest. I set out with a trailer to pick him up. It's a 1992 vintage and had 452 hours on it when it was last used a couple of years ago. It's pretty sad to see a decent machine like this left to rot. I suspect it orignally had an ignition issue as one of the coil leads was off and a spark plug missing. The owners daughter told me it'd had a fuel pump problem in the past which they'd bodged a fix for. It's going to get a full strip and rebuild. Things are pretty bad on the surface but underneath, everything's solid. Here are some pictures after I got it back. I couldn't wait to get started so pulled the seat and fender before digging the camera out! Bad points seem to be; engine issues - missing a front spark plug and the air filter won't have done the block any favours whilst it stood outside; the engine can't be turned rectifier shows evidence of heat on one of the terminals lift arm seized brake pedal seized both rear tyres perished seat soaked/rusted/perished front hitch bent where the previous owner tried to move the tractor using a long pry-bar (!) wiring for fuel tank shorted/perished no fuel line trans shifter seized Lots of PlusGas (the UK equivalent of PB Blaster) resulted in sorting out the lift arm, brake pedal and trans shifter arm. I think they were just the result of a small amount of water ingress. I haven't had to resort to anything more powerful yet! Using the front hitch as a leverage point was not a great idea. The hitch wouldn't even move; so I stripped down the front end and was able to get a bar in to gently bend it back to straight. The rest of the tractor seems very good. I'll finish taking it apart though, clean it all up and get it back together using new hardware where possible. Suprisingly, the coil seems to test good. I was sure it'd be u/s as it seems to be a weak point on the Onans. Turning my attention to the engine, I found the valves looking like this; and so with some interest popped off the heads to find they were now a sandpit; and looked at the internals; It seems water has occasionally trickled through the carb (I've ordered a replacement for this as I'm not sure how salvagable that is..), through the inlet valves and then drained past the pistons into the sump, were it's made a lovely mayonnaise. I was suspecting something along these lines although I must admit i was hoping it wasn't as bad as this.. To think this could probably have been avoided by covering up the tractor (or at least by refitting the air filter!) The silt build up appears to have reduced the damage to the bores somewhat but the pistons are still seized, as is one of the inlet valves I think. I'll remove the valves and then see if I can shift the pistons with a diesel bath and giving them a whack. I don't hold up too much hope though and will have a feeling I'm going to need to put up a plea in the wanted section for a block/pistons. More to come as I make progress!

2 pointsGoing to make the effort to get to this show this year. seeing its only around 5 miles away i think i should! Heres the flyer..... antiquengine_broch2014-final.pdf there was a thread on last years show here..... i will be going on the Saturday, would be nice to have a real large Wheel Horse showing, one of the organizers (a few of us met him at the Jacksonville show last year) assures he is setting aside a good size area for us. I guess the size would depend on how many turn up on the day, but he says he will make room for anybody that comes.

2 pointsAre you kidding...insuring the kids and the wife on that car??? If it was me...they would be lucky to be able to look at it...maybe take the wife for a ride (once in a great while)...if she is good. This car is made for (what we call in the fishing world).....trolling. Nice ride Mike!!!

1 pointI'm not quite sure if this post belongs in this forum so if not, moderators feel free to move it to the appropriate one...... I'm almost finished with a tire station I made using the Harbor Freight mini tire changer and the larger portable tire changer. My requirement was that it could be hitch mounted as well as in the garage, and the mounts needed pivot points so that the changers would remain plumb as well as be solid. This is what it morphed into and it works a treat. I did gusset the bead breaker and did some other tweaks. All I need now is the No Mar dismount/mount tool.

1 pointPicked quite a few hot cherry peppers this morning! Put Seriously Sinatra on the satellite, peeling garlic and jarring peppers! I'll have a big pot of tomato sauce and meatballs on the stove before it's all said and done!!! Lol! I'm happy with the way everything has grown this year!

1 pointSpent an entire week and a half there in the mid 90's. Wife was saying, just the other day, "would'nt it be great if we could locate the same cabin we stayed in?" Sure was a lot of fun. Went to Dollywood, Fontana Dam, Clingmans Dome, and just a whole bunch of other places. Rob

My daughter always has a list of stuff she wants me to do. Kinda like a wife. Today I'm getting the wiring nightmare in their basement bathroom straightened out.

He's always wanted a '74 C-160, just like the one he grew up with. We found one a few months ago, and several members chipped in to buy it and get it back into shape. 1 pointWill probably pass on them. I can fix the white / mtd for him and get the two wheel horses free, but the tractor is mostly junk and not maintained. Has engine problems with compressions release. The C-175 sure is nice, but unless a C-145 engine is a direct mount swap, I don;t want to bother. He wants $200 The C-145 has a great engine, but the rest of the tractor is junk, it has no sheet metal with exception to the hood. He wants $200

1 pointI am aware the narrow or wide rod can be used with the style "A" piston, that is not the problem. There is never been a case where the clearance has been close enough for concern so that leaves an issue with the crankshaft, or the parts. Nothing else. K301 and K321 theoretically have the same stroke and same rods. Bottom line is that there is somthing wrong. Your fault or not. If you grind the rod where it is rubbing, you run the risk of it breaking. If you grind the block it would be better but there should still not be a reason to do so. I have never run across this in all the kohlers I have rebuilt. And I have also used genuine and china parts.

1 pointBrings back memories. Here is my '78 Jeep Cj-7 back in 1979. I had Armstrong TruTracs mounted which were a perfect all-around tire. Nice clawing in mud and air down for running the sand dunes in Michigan. We use to regularly go 4-Wheeling (belonged to a club) about two hours southwest of Chicago near the town of Wilmington, IL. There was land that had been strip mined around the turn of the century that was perfect for getting in the dirt. I also remember doing a circle trip to Colorado, South Dakota and Wyoming that year when 55 mph was established to conserve fuel. The county mounties were running radar every two miles it seemed! The soft top was like a tent in a 55 mph wind for the three days it took - just to get to Denver.

1 pointJake is correct. If you think that the transmissions are original on your horses...the C-160 has he #5091 trans and the C-141 has the #103916 trans. They are basically the same...1 1/8" axles, 8 pinion, 8 speed. If you had 1" axles, it would be a 4 pinion differential. The 10 pinion "limited slip" differential is not even an option in your horses. Doing what Jake said would prove it.

1 pointAnd just to clarify...the 1532 needle bearing is a cap bearing...1 x 1 1/4 x 3/4. KOYO or Torrington would call that...M-16121. I don't know if the "M" stands for cap/or the 1 at the end does...but the 16 is 16 16ths ID (or 1") and the 12 is 12/16ths height...or 3/4" Type "Motion Industries" in Google click on bearings...type M-16121 in the bearing search box...hit enter http://www.motionindustries.com/motion3/jsp/mii/product/00090903/Koyo%C2%AE+M-16121+Drawn+Cup+Needle+Roller+Bearing%2C+Bore+Dia.%3A+1%22%2C+Outside+Dia.%3A+1-1%2F4%22%2C+Width%3A+3%2F4%22%2C+Max+RPM%3A+4%2C300RPM/en?category=Bearings%3ERoller+Bearings%3ENeedle+Roller+Bearings+%26+Rings%3EDrawn+Cup+Needle+Roller+Bearings You can also search on their site for measurements of bearings to see what is available...they do not have everything...but it is the first place I look, and knowing how they measure there stock makes it fairly easy to see if it is out there. Hope that helps guys The nice thing here is...if you have the ID and the height, you can name the bearing (KOYO/torrington) and go to NAPA or somewhere else and see if they can cross reference that number...rather then a Wheel Horse # that nobody knows what you are talking about.

1 pointTried all kinds of seats. Never found a "great" one. One day drivin' through the country found a wrecked Jazzy (?) trashed, at the curb. I stopped, took out some tools and removed the seat. Unfortunately the arm rests were trashed. This seat was gray, black now, Duplicolor vinyl and material paint. I had to drill mounting holes, easy enough. A comfy seat, covering comes off along with the padding for cleaning. Mounted on my 416-8. Seat folds down when not in use if you want to. Just push it down or raise it up.

Later, while I was gathering them up, I heard some birds causing quite a commotion over head in the trees. Looked up to see one of the wiser of our neighbors had dropped in to watch the show.

1 pointCheck your brake side linkage and check to see if your drive belt is worn. Belts stretch out after a while and need to be replaced. Buy a Toro drive belt and you won't be sorry. If you see the rear pulley still moving on the right side with the clutch fully depressed you may have some other issues.

1 pointThat's a pretty rare machine. 603's are more collectable than some of the other round hood models. A 14hp won't fit under the hood without heavy modification. I would save the tractor and find a 14 hp tractor that has the stronger rear end that can stand up to pulling

1 pointCut an old leather belt of about 2" wide to a length that'll fit the inside of the metal brake band. Liberally apply an epoxy bonding agent (POR 15 is great) to glue the leather strip. Clamp over-night to let dry.

1 pointI meant you could swap hood on the C-81 , C-85 but you need to use the correct hood latches to install them I put the K-301AS into my '81 C-85 for more horse power. Case Closed I am done talking about this subject
