Wife wanted to do the floors again today... so I put some sunblock on the kids and put them out in the back yard to play. Later, while I was gathering them up, I heard some birds causing quite a commotion over head in the trees. Looked up to see one of the wiser of our neighbors had dropped in to watch the show.

Been without a 4 wheel toy for a couple years so I scraped up all my pennies and bought this over the weekend. Its a 1994 with a 5.7v-8 (what else right ?) with a 6 speed manual, and a solid targa top with a leather interior. Its not showroom/mint condition and does have a few nicks and scratches but still looks presentable. The Magnaflow exhaust is a bit loud....or maybe I'm just to old . Now to figure out how to insure it with one teeneage driver in the house and another one just 2 months away from 16!! Probably try for classic car insurance from Hagerty or something along those lines with just the wife and I on the policy. Pics of course; Mike.........

The limited slip differential is the 10-pinion which is a little weaker than the 414-8's 8-pinion differential..if the brake drum is mounted close to the front of the tans than it will be a direct swap..Drive pulley's are the same diameter. One may be the cast iron stlye and one may be the stamped steel style but are the same diameter...if you have the older style trans all you need to do is swap the brake rod that somes from the clutch pivot arm or brake pedal arm...The only transmissions that had different bolt pattern were the 4 speeds used in the 953-1054's so the so the bolt holes in both transmissions are the same.

OK, but... there are nicer examples out there.

The "restraint" you have Bob is incredible. That is an excellent looking horse...and the story behind it...it would look great in Florida. Better yet...when are you moving back up here?? Think about it...Florida will be under water in 10 years....why go back??

Don't you know Dino... there is a limit to how much enthusiasm you can have here.

Thanks for getting in here Mike...I know the insides...but the outsides can be out of my expertise sometimes. Thanks for that information on the bolt patterns...that is always in the back of my mind when someone tries to do something like this.

you guys are probably getting sick of pics of this one, but i don't care! i took it out in the sun for some seat time and pics this afternoon. this drives the best of any one I've ever had, the jd front axle/spindles and vredestein 5 ribs is an awesome combination. almost no effort at all to steer and very smooth. actually the tractor is a very nice driver overall and i can't wait to get back on it again......

The restraint was entirely 'fear of wife' induced. She left with the boys shortly after I went over there. After the long conversation I was back here typing the post. I told her about it, showed her the pictures and she said I should buy it. I'll never get women figured out. I posted it for the neighbor at $800. I won't pay that for it due to the current condition. I'm thinking maybe $400 and some of that is due to sentimental value. It will fit in the bed of my Ranger with the deck standing up next to it. The guy and his wife are really nice and have done a lot for the kids here since I'm not around. In fairness to them I want to see what happens with the ad and later this week, if there's no activity, I may discuss it with him. Oh yea, about 5 miles from here as we were arriving yesterday my wife spotted a house with 10 acres for sale. Just maybe...............................

That looks like a 4831 to me. If so it is a 1968 Commando 8, 4 speed, Kohler K181S-30108D. Nice little tractors.

There's a gate on the east and west sides already. It's just that Dino's have a problem crossing bridges and don't care much for swimming. As far as chances at Iowa, it will happen this year, I think. Yup, it's been verified Nov. 15th. We will see who's got what to say after the Battle of the Mississippi is over. Maybe that's the game we will see, yet to be seen!

Yeah, I almost cried the first time I saw it unveiled. Now there's a reality show! Just need to get you and half dozen other of our Master Restorers together. Then hijack a deserving members tractor.

It's probably next your flashlight. And that leak could explain a lot.

A couple of things are involved here...depending on the year of your Raider. It should bolt right on, but measure the distance between the 4 mounting bolts where it bolts to the frame...if they are the same, it will bolt on. The 1968 and 1969 Raiders have the brake drum mounted on the 11/44 gear (the shaft comes out the hole closest to the axle). The 1970,1971,1972 Raiders and your 414-8 have the brake drum mounted on the cluster gear shaft (the next hole toward the front of the trans). You will have to mess with the brake linkage in both horses if you have 1 of the older Raiders. If you have 1 of the newer Raiders, it should be a straight swap...if the mounting holes line up.

Here are some pics of the Wheel Horse Orchard 12 that was mentioned in the shout box... Pretty nicely done modification.

actually though, "Posi " is a name General Motors used for some of their axles that were like a limited slip. but without getting into that debate, I knew what GENO was refering to. A limited slip unidrive transmission that was equiped on some wheel horses. Stevasaures just did a rebuild thread on one of these.....Check it out

What are the odds. In February of 1978, when my daughter we’re visiting here in Indiana now was one month old, I bought a new 1976 B-80 from Chandler’s Wheel Horse. As most of you know that year, as well as 77 and maybe other years, was identical to the C series except for rear tire size, steering wheel diameter, the seat back, motor size and a few other minor items. The key components like the frame and transmission were identical. I proceeded to ‘convert’ it to a C-160. The Commando 800 I restored for my grandson inherited the 22.750 rear tires and the low back seat. Shortly before coming up here my daughter called and asked if I’d mind helping their neighbor out with his old Wheel Horse. He saw the Commando and would have liked his restored the same way. He needed a few parts and didn’t know where to get them. Talk to a guy about Wheel Horses?! Of course(pun intended) I would love to. I had only seen it from about 200 yards away and only knew it was a mid 70’s so I asked her to get the model # on it. She called back with the number and he had told her it was an 8k802. I said perfect, a 1976 B-80 just like the one I had and sold in the auction when we moved to Florida. Then I got to thinking about it. 9 out of 10 people who didn’t have the addiction like we all do here would have said the model number off the decal on the hood stand. Interesting I’m thinking to myself. I took those decals off when I ‘converted’ mine so he had to find a number elsewhere. They live about 5 miles from our old place up here and the site of the auction. Nah……can’t happen. I drove the Commando to his place this morning. I just about had a heart attack. IT WAS MY OLD TRACTOR! We talked for over 3 hours. What great folks they are. He didn’t buy it at the auction but saw it for sale quite a few years ago on the side of the road. All he does with it is mow his large yard. It still has the 48†deck that I put on it and it’s in great shape aide from some minor surface rust in a couple places. My daughter said he was very finicky and it showed. He always scraped the built up grass off of the underside. Come to find out he was getting a zero turn and wanted it restored to sell it. He was wondering what it would cost to hire someone to do it because he really didn’t have the skills. He did repaint it and it’s a fair job but definitely could have been much better. After finding out that he just wanted it restored to sell I told him he shouldn’t put any money in it. I told him I’d do it only for the actual cost if he was going to keep it but that’s not feasible with me living in Florida. I had no clue if he could find somebody nearby and what it would cost. Now, you all may think I should buy it back but it really doesn’t make sense. As much as I’d love to have it back I’m trying to show restraint. So, I’m going to post it in the classified here for him. I only hope it goes to a good home and the best chance is if somebody here gets it.

This is my inexpensive GT14. ($20) The previous owner had a K301A motor mounted on it and that just wasn't going to work! He gave me this K301S and I installed it. I don't have any history on this motor so I didn't know what to expect. First attempt to fire it up with carb cleaner was a success! Looked like Westley's garage on "Last of the Summer Wine". Smoke rollin out the door! That was yesterday. This morning I put somemore parts on the motor and tried to start it with the temporary fuel cell. Would not start, no fuel to the carb. Removed the fuel pump and disassembled. I never saw so much rust in such a small space. (sorry, no pic of that) Wash it in the sink, reassembled and installed. Restart? YES! It runs on it's own . Even took it for a ride around the yard. Not too good up hills but the belt is way too long and slips. OK ... it's back to the garage. Here's the pics.

My mom told me the other day she could get me a free wheel horse if I wanted it and I had been looking into buying a third one anyways so of coarse I said yes. Well we drove probably 35 minutes away to go pick it up when we got there they had it ready and loaded it for me and everything and this is what I got.

Found the unusual find here in UK . The 854 are extremely rare here in UK ,in fact all round hoods are rare in UK . This little guy has been modified by attaching running boards from a 70's tractor . The running boards look like they were added a good few years ago , maybe as far back as the 70's . This tractor was apparently used to pull light aircraft around an airfield. There were 6 tractors bought to do this job & this little dude is no 4 . Sadly when I picked the tractor up is was minus a hood so I just placed the hood from my 653 , so I am now looking for a hood for an 854 should anyone have a good spare that they would like to sell & ship to UK.

Never get tired of looking at Wheel Horse pictures, especially this one. Now sit it on a pedestal, place a full size mirror on the pedestal and cover it with glass.

I drove it on the trailer when I bought it, and if jacked up spinning 1 wheel makes them both spin in the same direction. Anything else I should do?

    I agree, a 72 or 73. Not a 68.

When Stevbo get's done with his barn, he's been hired to dig a moat around Iowa. As a side note, whoever joins me in the boiler room for cards, has to help me find my missing refrigerant leak detector! Mike Steve

Just another thought...are you sure the "limited slip" is working in the Raider transmission??
  35. 1 point
I never thought about it that way but it does look like a Wheel Horse service dept. It's gonna stay Wheel Horse only too.
  36. 1 point
The gentleman he purchased it from acquired it from the highway dept. he touched up the paint a bit and put some new decals on it. When he brought it home the paint was chipping all over. No primer or red paint was anywhere underneath.

Terry knows some posi history. GM, Ford + Chrysler all had their own names for limited slip but GM won the common name battle with the Positive Traction as they called it. We use the short GM names posi or posi-trac. This tractor has the factory posi, it hasn't been messed with. But can I change them?

I've seen it done before with huge tractor tires.

That is a real nice find Neil. Can't wait to see what you end up doing with her. Looks like you need a foot rest for the left side also. What's up with the belt guard being chopped on the rear top of it ??

Think I have an old Kohler service manual around somewhere, but I went and downloaded the manuals from Kohler's website anyway. Thanks for the tip. Is there anywhere I can download a manual for the C-120?
