    I got home Tuesday evening just after a significant thunder storm that trashed a bunch of trees in my back yard. Fortunately they missed anything important. Funyy thing is all the the yards around me looked normal. Must have been some kind wind burst in the woods right behind me With the help of my trusty 1276 , an F150, two trailers, a chainsaw and a 21 year old farm hand form next door, I was able to get her cleaned up in 12 hours.     I picked up a 56" New old Stock Zero Turn Snow plow at this years WH show for $100.00 bucks. I had a brand new Snow Plow A Frame and I thought I may have to do some modification to mate them up, but to my surprise they both fit like a glove. I have a modification project for this arrangement to be mounted on a 520-H. This machine will be added to my Snow Removal Arsenal.

    Here's what's left of the 60" spruce that mashed my garden. I chipped all the small stuff and burned everything else. Not even good to toast marshmallows with all that turpentine burning. .

    picked up a nice little ranger with minor engine problems mainly being a techy so i bought a predator for $98 bucks.fedex delivered it yesterday and i allready have it mounted on the tractor.i just need to figure out what type of bracket/frame to build so i can use the original fuel tank and position.

    It might have been a special tractor but when you get down to it had nothing special on it Mechanically. Maybe the engine was a one timer. Other than that it was all cosmetic. I have a NOS GT 14 that was given to my Granddad when he was a dealer. He was in some kind of a dealer contest sponsored by Wheel Horse. He was awarded a special plak given to him from C. Pond himself and one of the new GT 14's. He never started it. Before it was crated up he had his Pic taken on it at the factory. They crated it up and sent it to him. We still have it, never been started. I could never sell it, but if I did I could not ask that kind of money for it. Heck the tires are dry rotted and belts dry rot to. Actually time just sitting has not been kind to it. Would not surpise me if all the seals in it are rotten to. Myself I just don't see what's so special about that tractor to warrant that kind of money.

    Most of the charging problems are caused by bad connections. If you replace the reg, make sure the connections are clean and tight

    I see you needed a KOHLER !! to do the job!! We had 4 tornado's in NY and 4 people got killed not to far from where I went to college.

    John...thank you for all the information. A few things come to mind. I used to be a kerosene fan for flushing out a trans, I am now into using diesel for that. There is a rib that runs through the bottom of the trans case where the center bolt is, with out jacking up the front of the horse (about 2 feet off the ground), a good maybe 6 oz will not drain...plus what may be caught in the axle tubes. You did good tipping the trans toward the drain on the back end. Drain the trans, put in 1 1/2 qts of diesel and run the trans in different gears (on blocks) for about 20 minutes. Drain doing what I talked about above...repeat the procedure if you think it needs it. Fill with the proper oil for your tractor. run level on blocks and check the dip stick. You should not hurt the trans with having a little too much oil in there...but remember that the gears in these transmissions throw the oil around for lubrication...too much oil, and it may not be able to throw it around like it is supposed to. Hope that makes since. Bob and I posted at the same time...as usual. Put what he said and what I said together and you will be OK. I have done trannys for 20 to 30 minutes running with diesel...depending on what is going on inside...the 10 to 15 minutes that Bob says may not be enough. You will not hurt anything if you have the horse on blocks. Two reasons I like to put the horse on blocks...if you have a seal that is leaking...you will not be leaking fuel into your grass...2nd...if you do experience a problem...you will not have to push the horse back into the garage.

    Yes, they can roll, mine do. I know when I suggested removing the tunnel cover in pic below, you said yours was welded on? Even if it is, you should do something about that, as there are plenty of important components under there that "can" be causing your issue also. There are a bunch of linkages and if they are not all tight and correct it may result in rattling that makes the cam move. IMO, this is very important step that you are not addressing and it is going to continue to haunt you till you atleast make sure it is all functioning as it should. . I once found a bolt going through the dash tower was put on backwards making the end of the bolt block the travel of the motion lever and the PO just kept hammering on the lever instead of taking the time to fully look at the motion lever from front to back to see how it all works and what was wrong. It could have even been the reason he ended up selling a great machine that continually gets a bad rap for not running properly.

    It will roll with the brake off. It's harder to move when it has been run because of hydraulic pressure in the transmission.

    I just looked at it. The hitch will work but the cable set up on the 1077 is different but wouldn't be a problem to take care of. Price? You can do a lot better than that.

    got to resize photo. I found an all original "500 Special" today and bought it on the spot. I will post pics soon, It has not seen the light of day in 25 years. I an super excited.

    Using a multimeter in the AC mode, and the engine running at full speed (3400-3600 rpm), you should read about 38 to 45 volts AC across the leads of the stator.

    I think there is too much Onan bashing on all these sites. They are great engines. I've had probably 8 or 9 and nothing compares for power. I've actually had more problems with Kohlers than with the Onans. When it comes to maintenance, you have to do that to any motor. It is a little more costly to de-carbon the heads and a pain to adjust the valves, you know the intake and exhaust manifolds have to come off ( new gaskets ) but it's all worth every penny when you hear that Onan roar to life. Yes it is more expensive for parts but does your 'K' series have an oil pump, do you mow on uneven ground with little oil going to the bearings? Does your Kohler 'K' have an oil filter? Just how often do you change your oil? Of course I've seen many Briggs that never got any, sat outside for years and still were running in less than an hour. More than I can say for Kohler or Onans. But does that make them a better engine?

    My '90 520-8 Onan powered runs great. I would say PM, preventative maintenance. Oil changes, filters, clean fuel, vac the flywheel screen and keep the air flowin' at all times. On the other side of the coin, my '85 416-8, an older horse, runs great. Almost like new. Same deal, PM! Preventative maintenance, oil, fuel, vac the flywheel screen after each use. Have fun with whatever Horse you pick up!

    Those Uni-Drives are tough little buggers. Not sure why it would bog down with no fluid unless things were getting hot, expanding, and starting to drag. In which case, I hope no damage was done. Keep and eye and ear on it. If you start hearing any unusual noises, you may have damaged bearings or other components. Good luck!

    Hey all I'm a new member in SLC. I ran my 416-8 tractor in a parade, and had a power inverter hooked to the battery to power a smoke machine. It worked at first but quit working part way through. Now the battery doesn't charge. it runs just fine because I have it hooked to a battery tender in-between uses. But I want to fix it. Would you start with the inverter, regulator or somewhere else, and how would you test these? I do have a volt meter. Any suggestions on where to start are appreciated. Thanks, Kevin

    Vinylguy, I am restoring a 1967 857 wheel horse as my high school senior project. I found the decals I need for the Tractor itself on your website, but I also have 2 attachments for it. I have a Wheel Horse RM367 rear discharge mower deck and a Wheel Horse snow dozer blade #06-42BC01 that i need to buy decals for. do you have them? How much would they cost?

    Here is what my reasearch has turned up on the 420LSE The development of the 420LSE tractor was a project assigned to challenge the engineers. No cost restrictions were imposed. “It involved most of the engineering departmentâ€, according to Ed Cole, a retired long-time employee of Wheel Horse. It was called a “commemorative tractor†but there was no single event that was to be commemorated. It was a “special†more than a commemorative tractor. The “LSE†in the model stood for Limited Special Edition. The 420LSE’s suggested retail price was $8,000.00. I hope you can read this on the price-list photo. This compares to the $4,499.00 suggested retail for the model 418-A, the second highest costing tractor sold that year. The 420LSE was the most expensive tractor ever produced by Wheel Horse as of the date of manufacture. It had a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather seat, and over eighty chrome components. It even came with a chrome draw bar hitch pin, zippered document case, and chrome plated key fob. Only 200 were built according to the 1986 “Wheel Horse Lawn & Garden Equipment†brochure. Each one was sequentially numbered according to the 1986 brochure. A chrome plate was added to the hood where the owner’s name was engraved. The engine used was a Kohler Magnum 20. The M20 had not been used previously on a tractor nor was it used again on a tractor. However, it was used on the 720-Z, a zero turn mower in 1987. Shipment to the dealer was in a box made of three-quarter inch plywood. Included with the tractor was a loose parts box for the mower deck and other items. There were chrome gauge wheels and shoulder bolts that the dealer would install on the deck the customer purchased. Deck detailing instructions required the dealer to remove existing bolts and install red bolts where the background color was red and black bolts where it was black. The tractor included a forty-eight inch mower deck but the customer could buy any deck they wanted. It did create some maintenance issues. There were problems with the leather seats and the rear wheels. Making the rear wheels involved plating and polishing two parts which were then spot welded together. “The weld sites were covered with a little silver paint and the area was prone to rusting,†according to Ed Cole. Spare parts were phased out rather fast. The 1986 product year brochure featured the 420LSE on both the front and rear covers. There is probably some reason to doubt the accuracy of the number produced as being 200. I say this because brochure printing was likely done before production ended. I would like to hear from anyone who has one, along with their tractor’s serial number and a photo.
