6 pointsJust waiting for the tail of the storm with a few more inches to fall. I used the Ariens to clear most of it and cleaned up with the 518xi. I even had the C-105 out for a little exercise as well. Notice the sidewalk superintendent checking my work.

6 pointsWell, 17" is a bit much for the blade but the tractor did it in stages!! Driveway nice and clear now....yikes Semper Fi

5 pointsJust came in...thought I'd get a jump on it before I went into work. Wasted time and gas though...more snow fell in the hour I was out there, then was there before I started.
-
5 pointsI'm tired of all this snow already, I don't mind the big storm's its all the little one's I'm tired of. I think its Steveasaurus's fault we are getting so much this yr.. He was complaining he had NO snow last yr. Rumor has it that this past fall he was caught in full head dress doing a snow dance with a bottle of Scotch in hand...

4 pointsDon...you did not bulk up for winter did you??? Those few extra pounds can make the difference.
-
4 pointsOk. As promised. We got 10 inches. When I got the tractor out it was turning over to freezing rain / sleet. Wet and heavy. Here are some pics of my oldest Mike doing the action shots for dad. Glenn

4 pointsIm ready to go…gotta make a fuel run tomorrow morning first thing but with 10-18 inches coming my way the 18 is gonna get its first major workout. I can't wait to get some time pushing the white stuff with it and give the Charger 12 a break

3 pointsi I went to myTaiwanese doctor today for a check up. I gained 6 lbs from last time. He wasn't 't happy and I told him it was for plowing snow. He didn't believe me. I had to show him the picture of your avatar!!!

3 pointsWhen I first read the title.....I was hoping for a pill to put in the gas tank!!!

3 pointsI opted to get the factory elevator installed... drops down one story into the cave.

3 pointsI encountered the same problem on my blower on the C-125A. I put washers around the flag arm until I got the height I wanted- right now 6 of them- I can take out or add washers as I need- Thanks-Al
-
3 pointsIMHO... Toro didn't buy out Wheelhorse to promote Wheelhorse. To the contrary, the buy-out was to eliminate the competition.
-
3 pointsNot to rub it in rdmanone...but I am going to plant palm trees here in Chicago this spring....the snow belt is moving south towards you. All it takes is a little shift in the earth's axis...and a small magnetic shift. Illinois is going to be the Sunshine State...
-
2 pointsDang it...you guys are having way too much fun. I want to be where it snows 8" and you have to get out there right now before it melts. Are you kidding me...this year...you have to get out there right when it is done snowing before the temp drops to minus 10 real temp. And guess what...it snows again every other day...not a lot...just enough to drive you crazy. The horses are getting fat from all the carrots and apples I am giving them to get them to start. Glad they are Kohlers . Although, I have to say...my tecky 3.5 Ariens has been great...but I am running out of Wisconsin cheese to dangle in front of it. I know I am sounding like I am complaining...I am not...this is one of the best/worst winters in my lifetime. I am going to make it...and I am going to remember this one like I do the blizzard of 1967...the snows of 1987...the cold of 1983/4. This kind of winter is the stuff memories are made of. Guys in North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia...all of the snow belt. The memories of the horses going out and doing the thing they were meant to do 40+ years ago. Thousands with no power, but the horses started and cleared the snow. This is what it is all about...anybody can cut the grass. One other thing...NO BUGS!!! :) :)

2 pointsI have been using my Lawn Ranger's STR-324 snowthrower all winter. I felt like the snowthrower did not have as much lift to it as was needed to easily move around to the next area to tackle. I was working in the street in front of the house and realized the snowthrower was too close to the ground -even when lifted all the way up. So I got out the manual for the STR-324 snowthrower ( Also Model 6-3211 in the implement manuals) and found that the original drawing listed a set or shaft collar of 3/4 inches to be placed on the Lift Flag for added left capability. I was surprised to see after putting the collar on the flag and lift rod that the snowthrower lifted almost 6 inches off the ground in the front of the tractor! This was about three times what it had been. The collar did not need to be set with the set screw and is probably less than a half inch wide but the use of the collar definitely raises the snowthrower more than not using one. I am not sure if this shaft collar is noted in other snowthrower/snowblower manuals made by Wheel Horse but I will make sure to use it from now on. I took sever pictures (no before shot without the collar but the snowthrower was about two off the ground) which help tell the full story. The Wheel Horse engineers really new what they were doing 50 years ago to be able to create this type of lift off of a less than 1/2 inch shaft collar! In this photo you can just see the shiny new collar above the black snowthrower chute handle : I recommend using one of these on your lift flag to help with your snowthrower if you have not already placed one on your tractor.

2 pointsgot the 520-H with thrower stuck at base of our friends driveway down the street..weird grade of main road to the driveway. the Frau pulled me out with the 416-8!!!

2 pointsFrams are junk. Use Napa (Wix). I cut open an OEM Toro trans filter once. Nothing to write home about. Wish I took pics. If I ever get a hold of another used one I'll take them. Napa 1410 is a pure Hydraulic/ power transmission filter built twice better.

2 pointsI used to think that you had a magic wand like Brian does but now I think Mike's right..... It's a carpet.

2 pointsTerry, Thank you for the excellent pictures. I cleaned and verified everything from top to bottom and finally decided to just put it all back together correctly and see what happens. Due to an upcoming storm, which it just started snowing here in NE PA and we are suppose to get 10-12" tonight, I felt a rush to get this back together. I started the reassembly around 5pm est and just finished now. I took my time, used pictures I took and the manual that was shown to me. I cleaned everything and actually put it back together. Once the tranny was assembled, I started reassembling the tractor itself, taking my time cleaning along the way and making sure everything was correct. Long story short....the beast is back in business! Im excited that I put the tranny back together and it actually works. lol I believe there were some factors that contributed to what was happening but I believe the biggest was very old and low tranny fluid. Im glad I took the tranny apart because I was able to clean it properly and Im sure it appreciate the new fluid. I would like to thank everyone that gave me guidance on this project. I would not have had the courage to do it without the support. I joined the forum for a year because I wanted to give something back. I can say without a doubt that the old Wheelhorse tractors are unstoppable if taken care of. I actually think this summer I am going to disassemble and repaint, just because it deserves it. I attached a pic of the reassembled tranny and my beast ready to go tomorrow morning! I say bring on the some tonight as we are ready. Thanks again all!!!!

1 pointguys, thanks for all the really nice comments. i just take each part as it comes and work with it. this is turning out the nicest so far, but i have better and newer parts to use as well....... this is the first time I've replated the hardware instead of buying all new, so that is different, and its kind of weird using yellow instead of clear zinc. when these were built just about all the bolts etc were yellow, with the bigger hardware being black zinc along with the odd bolt or two........ i have the opportunity to do the black as well, but I'm liking the way the yellow looks with some of the engine/pto parts on the later 315 tractors so I'm probably going to go that way..... got a little more assembled tonight. little by little its becoming a tractor again. i need to get a bunch of parts ready for another plating run, so 416 #2 (which is donating a lot of itself to this cause) will be coming apart real soon. heres some more pics.....

1 pointWeather permiting I plan to go to the farm this weekend. Have to check to make sure but thinking I have a pair of them. Check your engine out and let me know. Only reason I have them is I use a 800 Special to drag cars into my shop and thought I might tear one up. Been at least 8 years and no trouble yet.

1 pointSteve, I guess my other option if I am not commited is to scrap the Horse which I do not want to do. Not sure how easy it would be to find a replacement trans. I hopefully can get it welded, should be able to. I have no need for this tractor other than for the fun of restoring it and the hope that it teaches my kids something(not sure what maybe mechanical skills and that we dont have to throw things away when their old). So saying that I will diffentetly try to fix this thing the best I can with the help of all the knowledge on this forum. Thanks, Chris

1 pointAs always Martin, top shelf work. It looks like this tractor is going to eat snow for lunch. I bet its going to steer fantastic with the front tires you are using and it looks like the rear tires are really going to dig in as well. I like to lay out a carpet when I'm doing a full restore as well. Its gives me something clean and warm to lay or sit on, the parts are easier to see and if you do accidentally kick a part they don't slide as easily on the carpet as they would on a slick floor.

1 pointYou can put 4.00 X 6 triple ribs on those rims, but the sidewalls will be a little bulged out. I had them on my old pulling tractor: http://www.ebay.com/itm/350738529933

1 pointReady... Depth is 3 or 4 inches. Fine for front blade chores, but unless it picks-up, I'll see what's waiting in the morning.
-
1 pointWow, how do you know which bolt/nut/washer/etc. goes where? I do think you need to borrow my 416H for a while...take as much time as you need.
-
1 pointI know I've been a bit slow on an update to this, other projects getting in the way! As it's so wet outside, I've finally hooked it up and done a short video. I really need to get a hole cut in the dash and get it mounted now. Note, I have the governor set a little low, I don't like running this engine at full tilt anymore. It's 35 years old and a little tired, it will get a rebuild, but in the meantime I will look after it. Here you go, apologies for the wobbleation, both me and the tractor aren't too stable Output is taken from one of my modified RR units.

1 pointI use the d's back blade and fel to clean out my semi well. then a use a bolens 1886 with a heated cab and power angle blade for the parking lot. my buddy chumley in the picture loves helping.

1 pointOk , Here's mine. My good ole gt14 , resting under the tarp after round one. We got about 4 inches so far. I tried plowing up my drive way this time and there was no problems. Pushed the snow right up it with no slipping. I don't even have weights , just chains, but these gt14's weigh a ton. I just bought this house and don't know the neighbors that well. I am starting to feel bad plowing my driveway and they are all shoveling. I guess I should be nice and ask .... lol I'm also a little mad my blower bearings didn't come yet as this would be a great time to try it out. I hope we get some more snow after they come!! Kyle

1 pointyep, wiring will get some attention soon. for the moment everything is working, just need to get the pto and motion control in just the right spot and it will fire up. both the molex connectors will be replaced too, as they have seen better days..... tonight i needed to remove the seat pan to be able to get to a broken off bolt as there was only one holding the seat gas strut bracket to the seat stand. it was moving around and i could see the broken off bolt in there but couldnt get to it without removal of some body parts...... while i was in there i noticed the hubs were loose and also needed to clean up the wheels, so they came off too. removed the wheel weights also and will take them into work and powdercoat them silver to better match the wheels. the hub situation was only worn out keys, the hubs and axles are in good condition so i just cleaned them up a little and put them back together with new keys. set screws were a little loose too so that added to the loose hub situation. glad i sorted this out before putting more hours on it. cleaned up some more of the trans and removed a bunch of grass and crap etc as well. everywhere i work on this 416 i see that it hasnt really done a lot of work, hours are at 560 something and the gauge works. it hasnt been pampered but hasnt really been beat that much either..... heres a few more pics for those that cant read, (or just like pictures)..... had an axle seal leaking sometime, doesnt seem to be leaking anymore after a trans oil change.... left side, no leaks but lots of grass was in there..... wheel weights will get a blast of silver powder, i think i can find something close to the shade of the wheels..... wheel cleaned up. lug bolts look like new. im enjoying the lack of rusty/siezed bolts on this one.... still some cleaning to do down there...... seat pan will get a polish and we will see how nice it comes up, once again, not complaining about the lack of rust here either..... need to get a trans tunnel cover to replace this temporary one that is on it now..... was interested to see how close the ih red powder i use is to the factory paint on the seat support. paint looks like powder coat, i think by this late in the game all these tractors were powder coated.
