2 pointsI would like to share a story about my youngest son's football team, First I'm so glade we moved to a small town to have and raise our kids, the community is awesome and you can see that in the kids here, the young man in the story has been a buddy of my son for a while now, and has lots of friends now that he is getting involved, in more stuff like football. We were setting in the stands watching the game when all this happened, none of us had a clue, the boys did this for Keith all on their own with the blessing of the coach's. I have to say this brings a tear to my eyes every time I watch the video, so dang proud of the team. At first the local paper came and talked to the team, then the local TV station heard about it and came out for a interview at their next game, they put it on the 6pm news that night and it was not pushed to the end of the broadcast, it was the second story of the night, then they posted it on Face Book, it was a hit, so they reposted it, because they thought it was worth telling again. ​I hope this link to the news cast works, let me know if the video works or not. http://www.wilx.com/home/headlines/Olivet-Special-Needs-Student-Scores-Touchdown-227533941.html

2 pointsI rebuilt the carburetor off of the K181 bought at auction Saturday. Put it on the 857. Installed a new battery, check the oil, primed the fuel pump, turned the key and she started like a good Kohler should. Just a minor bit of tweaking the carburetor needle valves, and she purrs like a kitten. No unusual noises, bang, clunks or taps. But, she does have a smoking problem. Looks like the engines going to have to undergo some work. Took it for a drive around the house. Transmission is good. Don't see any leaks. I think this is going to be my winter project, so when I begin the process, I will start a new thread.

2 pointsKey to brushing is #1 slightly thin (keyword slightly) with the proper thinner depending on the paint type. #2 is use a good quality brush made for the type of paint you are using. #3 don't go over it over and over to eliminate brush marks... I've seen jobs that you would have thought were sprayed...

1 pointif you've kept up with these two threads..... you would know that i now have a 416. both of them tell the story to date. tonight i decided i needed to hook up the rough 48 SD deck that came with the GT1848 and go get me some seat time on this thing. i thought that maybe running it under load for a couple hours would help the engine (carb really) sort itself out a bit. well i got nearly 2 hours in tonight mowing my neighbors field and lawn surrounding her house. it was reasonably long and thought running this thing loaded would sort out some of the bugs (and keep its new owner sort of sane with some riding........) got done and gave it a good compressed air blowout to clean up some of the grass afterwards. definitely running a lot nicer, but still thinking a carb rebuild eventually will have to take place. it still stumbles and hunts every 5-10 seconds, but will smooth out with just a small amount of choke out...... need to look at a couple manuals i have, its got one of those limited range plastic screws in the mixture screw location on the carb, so i need to get familiar with it, before i can fix it. now ive not had a 400 series before, closest tractor to that would be my GT1848, which, when you put them both together and look at the specs they are almost the same tractor mechanically except for the differing twin engines..... and the briggs 18 (GT1848) has 2 hp on the onan P216 (416). after spending some time on the 416 tonight, i have found another favorite (think i have a garage full of them anyway), plenty of power and not too bad on gas for the engine size. the ground speed isn't as good as my 1848, but it goes plenty fast for mowing with the 48 deck. not sure if the eaton gearing was faster on the GT1848s than the 416 tractors or not. just seems that the 416 is slower......i still have some bugs and other stuff to sort out, mainly from lack of maintenance from the previous owner before terry got it, so with some linkage adjustment and tuning we will see...... heres a pic or two after chores tonight........

1 pointOk folks I am in need of your assistance. I am currently in the planning stages and working out the details here at the elementary school that I am teaching at to start a “tractor club†for boys and girls in the 5th and 6th grades. This will be a unique opportunity to share in my hobby with the kids that I work with each day. My goal is that the kids will be able to get their hands dirty and learn about a vintage piece of machinery while taking pride and ownership in a project that they can see through to completion. I feel that this is almost becoming a dying breed as electronics have taken over the interest of young minds. I am currently on the search for a vintage Wheel Horse machine that is not ultra collectible and one that is fairly simple to work on, gear drive tranny is a must. Since this project will be funded on my dime, I am looking for a inexpensive machine that will fit the bill. I will then be searching for parts from time to time once the tractor has been designated. At the end of the project we will auction it off and take the money from the sale to purchase the machine and supplies for the project during the next school year. We are still working out the logistics here at school and hoping to get this project started very soon. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. I will try my best to document our progress for all of you to follow along and enjoy. I am excited at the possibilities that we may have. Thanks again! ****UPDATE**** David Rice has been gracious enough to get a nice running C-120 in to my possession for this project. A thank you goes out to Terry Dennis as well for the new decals that this machine will have once it nears completion. I am continually impressed with the hearts and generosity that so many of the members have. I am looking forward to this project with much anticipation!!!!!

1 pointI have a snow blade for my B-100 that I have been wanting to give a face lift. After watching Ian's video of his camera trailer in which he brush painted the steel, it occurred to me that brush painting may be the way to go. I think I would want to use Rust-o-liums Regal Red. Question...can I just use the paint out of the can, or is it better to thin and add hardeners when using a paint brush?? This is a worker, but I want it to look nice. I am not being lazy here, with searching. There is not much in past threads on brush painting, the paint to use and how to use it. I am thinking that a snow blade is a perfect candidate for the brush...no over spray to protect from...and the time of year. I do intend to sand and wire brush the metal and prime first. Thanks

1 pointLove it Love it !! I always have afew items that really don't require a super finish ready when I finish spraying and have a little left in the can thinned and with hardener and many times can't hardly tell the difference from items sprayed. Sometimes leave it perk for another hour or so.

1 pointEven when completely stopped if you are shifting fast from one gear to another they will grind. If you give the transmission some time between taking it out of gear and into another it usually works with out grinding. I find my self shifting too fast if I'm in a hurry.

1 pointSteve, Brush painting can give some good results , i have done a few tractors with this method , whenever i can, i do use a mini roller to spread the paint also with good reults . Good luck with it . Oh , I would thin the paint to give better spreading coverage

1 pointQuite honestly...that is pretty cool...don't know what you paid for all that though. You happen to have some great yard ornaments there. My wife would already be buying flowers to put in and around those. I do not think Wheel Horse used solid tires, unless it was in the 40s or 50s. (Ponds).. Seriously, I am liking those tires...good luck finding rims for them.

1 pointSorry for the lack of updates. Last week we had to cancel as I was under the weather, but really looking forward to meeting up with the kids tonight to get back on track with the project. I will try and post some photos and get you up to speed. We are now in long process of sanding............I can say so far, it isn't their favorite thing to do.

All that, along with the perfectly placed chuckle are what makes me watch your videos, but when you went upside down and dropped out of frame I found myself fighting to keep from spitting my drink out all over the screen. 1 pointAwesome. 6-71 238hp. (unless turboed). We had one in a 71 IH 4070A. But, with the installation of N-70 injectors and just a little tweaking on the rack? It would give a 318 a run for the money. I love the look of that series Allis Chalmers tractors. I can't remember the number but they had a big articulated tractor with 2 mufflers. I think it was an 8550. That tractor just looked mean. Period.

1 pointThose rattle cans get expensive,and you never have enough.I bought a cheap gun several years ago.You would not use a pint of paint on that tractor.If I can learn to use a gun anyone can.Just a little test spraying on some cardboard gives you the Idea.My thoughts have always been to use light coats,you can always add more,but it's pretty messy to take it off. Now that stitching is an art.I have a guy cover some for 40.,but thats just flat stock,none of that fancy stuff. The tractor looks great,no matter what method you used to get there.

1 pointWhy do I detect an ulterior motive? Who shall "D" winner be for October? No ulterior motive here. I enjoy the Tractor of the month and have voted every month since it started. My 18 auto is a worker and was redone with that in mind. It has been outclassed by many other tractors on here and I'm not too concerned about it. Winning would be nice for my son but Im not gonna pout if it doesn't happen.

1 pointI own both...that being said I got lazy and just leave the ags on year round. I do put chains on in the winter as I have a steep hill to plow out. They do ok on that hill without chains until i get a pack of snow then I need the chains so I just got into a habit of putting the chains on in the fall when I put on the blade or blower.. The chains don't do quite as good on the ags as they do on the turfs in the snow but not so bad that it makes me want to swap all the time.. Kevin

1 pointSteve, If you remember, I had an 856 that I brought to the show in 2011, then sold it later that year. I have regretted selling it ever since. That was a really fun tractor to putter around on. Now that I have the 857 with snow plow and deck, it may become my go-to horse. However, I just ordered a new set of decals from Terry, so it looks like it's going to get the full "bob-effect".

1 pointBob, you have finally bought one of the best Wheel Horses out there. It will soon become your favorite and go to horse. Hard to beat the 8hsp short frame square hood. Did I mention the turning radius? Excellent compared to the earlier horses. Make it a worker...it will not let you down.

1 pointSorry I am looking to build a second puller and not have to deal with the 10 pinion rear ends. I like the 8spd trans because of the hi/lo so I was wondering if there was any way of telling between a 10 pinion and an 8 pinion without splitting the case? From what I have heard the 10 pinion is limited slip and the 8 pinion is not, so in theory, Dave's plan should work by spinning the wheel?

1 pointIH 706 gas... Yup gas! Grew up diving and fixing that monster, it may have only been rated at 70HP but it could out pull any of the 125HP tractors the neighbors had. My dad was an early convert to no-till and that was our big tractor. Every drill we would borrow was rated for a 125HP tractor, that 706 would pull it all day. We finally wound up buying our own 15' no-till JD drill and the neighbor borrowed it one year. Dad told him we pulled it no problem with the 706 he brings down his JD whatever 125HP tractor pulls it away comes back couple of days later and says his tractor wouldn't pull it, and had to get his big 4x4 to pull it. You couldn't shift them things to save your life without grinding gears, it was loud, no cab, no radio, no creature comforts other then the springs in the seat. 1 pointLast night we had our first club meeting to cover safety, teamwork, expectations, academics, and the overall general process of the project. The kids had a chance to look over the tractor last night and search for things that need to be replaced or repaired. They did a pretty good job without having any prior knowledge to draw from. The time flew by and all of us couldn't believe that we had to wait until next week to start the project. Tear down will commence next Wednesday after school. Here is a picture of the kids around the tractor!!!!!

1 pointWell operation Harrison Elementary School Tractor club has begun! I took an early morning drive yesterday to meet David Rice (RCTruckdaddy) I believe that is his RS name. He was nice enough to meet me half way. We swapped the tractor over on to my trailer and then had a great conversation. Headed back home and let her sit. She is a great candidate for the kids to get dirty with. Most of the parts it needs I believe I have on the shelf, but there are few things I don't think I have so I may ask if anyone has those items available for a small fee. Many folks that follow along on my Facebook page "Wheel Horse Junkies" have jumped in to lend a hand. Terry Dennis (Vinylguy) has willingly offered up a new set of decals for the machine. Bud Andrews is going to get me squared away with a new battery when the time comes. Daniel Aungst is sending a gift card to TSC to help me with costs of materials. I am trying to work with some local groups that would be willing to chip in as well so I don't have to cover the entire project out of my own pocket. Our first meeting is this Wednesday after school. We will be focused completely on safety as I continue to round up the much needed parts for this. The kids will get a chance to see the tractor for the first time and we will talk about how we are going to tackle the project. It should be a lot of fun!!!! 1 pointHey guys gonna get started finally on my 700 restore, was wondering of a 10hp techumseh is too much for this tractor, used to have an 8hp in it which was nice, i have a 5hp brigs from a snow blower in now, which isn't enough, but its about dead. Hope to rebuild it and use on a leaf sucking wagon.
