4 pointsheres my sons 875 with duro 23 x 10.50-12 ags on standard 12 x 7 wheels. these are the smoothest riding ags I've ridden on......
-
4 pointsGood idea about tire pics, some of the tires just arent available in the original sizes for our horses. I found this out with my D-180 and my 1054, both of them originally having a 15" size that isnt made anymore. This is the 1054 with what I used as replacement - Its American Farmer in 7.60x15 and is a fair bit larger than the original 6.40x15 and is a bit snug in fit but looks pretty darn good --- kinda bad a** This is the dealer that had the American Farmer -- http://stopandgotires.com/model.asp?model=Traction%20Implement%20I-3 The fronts are garden variety 400x8.

4 pointsthese are my deestone 23x8.50-12 tires. they ride rough on dry ground, but really dig in the dirt

3 pointsMight be a better photo close up, long shot hides dirt, grime , and neglect better: C120: 23x10.5-12 Nanco Rear, 16x6.5-8 Firestone front; L156: 23x8.5-12 Deestone rear, 16x6.5-8 Carlisle front

2 pointsAg's are cool but everyone's doing it... ! I went with these. They are 23x10.5x12 Carlisle All-Trails. They worked great this past winter with 75#'s of weight on each rear rim and NO chains. Mike....

2 pointsI'm with Bob and Martin on this one. You can avoid all the hassle of having to prime the pump by simply not letting your tank run out of gas. Assuming everything is OK with your engine, somebody (SOI?) recently estimated that a Kohler K241 (I think) would run about 40 minutes on a gallon of gas, your K301 should be close to that. I don't quite understand the theory behind that conclusion, but it matches pretty well with what I get from both of my K241 engines. So, if you have a 2-1/2 gallon tank, are you getting close to 100 minutes, or an hour and 40 minutes, before you completely run out of gas? If so, that's about as good as you can expect, and you should just plan a rest break sometime before that point. If not, then you can start looking for causes for your excessive fuel consumption.

2 pointsWe had a needle rigged up on the farm years ago. Dad took an inflation needle for a basketball and screwed into a small pipe coupling and a grease zerk in the other end. He would use a needle till it was no good anymore and just screw in a replacement. IIRC he cut the end of the needle off with a grinder on a bevel so the end was sharp and would just jamb it under the seal. Saved many an old bearing on farm implements that way.

2 pointsWell I was driving home after visiting my sister in Western NY, taking the back roads. When out of the corner of my eye I see a Wheel Horse with a deck sitting along side the road with a "For Sale" sign on it. I stop (duh...of coarse!!!) and asked the guy to fire 'er up! VVrrrooom!!! No Smoke! So I asked why was he selling it? He said that his grandfather bought it original and handed it down; but that he just bought a big Craftsman tractor and he had no use for it. Now I did not want him to "catch on" that I was drooling inside and I am a WH nut, and he's gonna spring at selling to a collector at the highest bid! I took a deep breath and said "Looks in decent shape for an old tractor". He said that it was always kept in the barn. "How much are you looking to get for it?" I said while biting the inside of my lips. He said $100! SOLD!!! Here's cash! ...and away I took it to it's new home! Needs a good shining up and a few cosmetic things... like a new seat.
-
2 pointsProbably gonna ruffle a few feathers here but this reminds me of a little kid on a playground taking all the toys and not letting anyone else play with them...I have plenty of rare stuff just as most here do but I don't go to a want ad and tell someone I have a bunch but none are for sale HarleyFX I have a complete ready to install one pictured below that I will ship to your door for FREE!!!! Send me a pm with your address and I will get it in the mail. I sell a lot of WH parts but I also give away parts to other members here on redsquare it just depends on the part and how many I have.

1 pointGotta love that craigslist, saw a wheel horse snow blower listed at 3 o'clock and it was in the truck at 7. $100 and pretty darn good shape. Still looking for that great tiller deal though ?
-
1 pointTodays score! Got a late 55 rj35 for 60 bucks and a k91 for 40. The k91 has the correct throttle cables for a 35 which is the main reason I bought it. Has some nice tins too. The 35 was the best score though! It just needs a motor, belt guard, steering wheel and engine pulley. The gas tank looks pretty decent too! The drive system is rigged...I will have to tear into it today. They have a bolt going through the hub so there probably are not pauls but it does still work. The veri drive seems to be in good shape though. The wheels and tires look great too. Hope to have it going soon. Don't think i'm going to paint it.

1 pointSon: Dad, remember me telling you a long time ago about the brakes not working on the tractor? Dad: Yes, and I told you a good operator does not need brakes....just use the bucket. Besides, I can't afford to fix the brakes. Son: Dad, I used the bucket to stop...just like you said, but we have another problem........

1 pointWhen surfing CL I saw these and had to get them and give them a try. Carlisle Swamp Pro in 26/12.5/12 with lugs that are 1.5" tall that actually have double edges on the lugs. They get traction and when taking too much bite with the FEL, even dig a hole on hard dry ground!

1 pointjust fell right into that one..... Mike, i do use my mouth quite often, but I don't usually recommend it on here anymore........ It's a bit like siphoning gas if you don't get it right...... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

1 pointLike the others said, quite often the mechanical pumps need a supply of fuel at the pump before they will work - they're not good at sucking air. I pull off the supply line at the pump and wait till gravity has pushed all the air out of the line before hooking it back up to the pump. Martins idea of pressurizing the tank is good, I usually do it just by putting my mouth over the filler and blowing. I'm surprised Martin doesn't do the same, Australians generally have very big mouths which are capable of pressurizing fuel tanks on semi tractors.

1 pointThanks VinsRJ, thats always a possibility. I'm not too worried SousaKerry, The guy who fixed it did a good job Thanks Tom, it's already coming along nicely. Maybe going to bring it to Jacksonville. We'll see...

1 pointThanks for the respnses. I am liking this site already. The carb should be in in a few days, put that on change all the fluids, lube everything, then bring it homw. I will get some pics then. Some people I worked with asked me why I would want that one when I could have gotten the 18.5 hp Craftsman for less. I said because it's a Wheel Horse. A 10hp Wheel Horse will work a 20hp Crapsman to death. A Crapsman Lawn and Garden tractor is a lawn mower with big wheels, a Wheel Horse is a small farm tractor that can cut grass.

1 pointI got this last year, but didn't get to do much work on it until this spring New filters and fluids all around, new fuel line as well as a couple of hydraulic hoses. Gunk in the carb was the worst problem, but I finally got that solved. Some of you will recognize your work. That is Matt's foot pedal, and Smorneau's hitch. The Ag's are loaded, and there are weights inside and outside, adds almost #350. I drilled vent holes into the belt cover. Most of the heat comes through the top half, which is a good thing for my right foot! I want to put on a spinner knob and tri-ribs, but I am thrilled with it right now.

1 pointThe inside wheel weights are Bolens. I had to cut a notch for the valve stem, but otherwise they fit into the rim perfectly. The paint is original. The parts that I had to repaint after working on them got Valspar Tractor Implement IH Red. Close match on the '96, not as good a match on my '91. It was very well cared for by the PO, but must have been sitting for a long time. Rescued from a garage in Chicago, now it runs wild in the woods of Michigan's Upper Peninsula!

1 pointI guess I'll throw my hat in the ring. From this to this in 8 hrs flat. I know I have at least one doubter out there but it can be done, and this tractor does look nice. I don't even know what yr. it is, don't care. (1985?) She has almost 2000 hrs on the clock and still purrs like a kitten. I cut at least an acre of grass a week with it, haul firewood, pull the sweeper, all the kinds of things Wheel Horse's were meant to do she does no problem. No trailer queen here, just an honest hard workin refurb.

1 pointi love my 310 -8 , i have plowed with it disced with it and mowed lots of grass .

1 pointNice looking ranger Terry, can't wait to see the finished product.

1 pointnice score! my commando 800 is one of my favorites, even more so after i changed the rear hubs and 4 tires to BIG BOY sizes
-
1 pointExcellent trade! No hindsight needed for it! And my 310-8 mulches everything up to limbs as big around as my thumb and more. I have the 37" deck on it but it runs a 42" SD very well and it plows snow too.

1 pointI'm back to work on this project now that my 701 is done. The sickle cutter bar that I put new blades on has been plated matte chrome. I bought a set of wheel weights last spring at Mentone, I got those blasted and base coated and a few tins and small pieces painted. Before I painted the seat pan I drilled holes in it so I could put springs under the seat for a better ride. I wanted a wider set of rear rims for the weights so I took all the tires back off and had the fronts and the wider rear rims powder coated and got those back on and last week I picked up an ST326 snow blower for this tractor.

1 pointI'm not a big fan on any of them built past 79. Seems like they got cheapened especially with the paint. Most of them I run across are really rusty while older ones may have faded paint but are 't rotted. Best for me is my 76 C-160 auto w/hyd lift and a lite round hood(704) to tool around the yard with a wagon or sweeper
-
1 pointI'm sure it will turn out fantastic Richard, as it seems all your work does! I'm glad you gave this thread a bump. Your work is definitely second to none, and this is a beautiful !! Matt

1 pointJust an update for anyone interested...This weekend [Memorial Day] was the 5th time I've used the now labled 'Master Blaster'. The cuts have been fantastic and the time cut noticable. While WH never intended the 60"er to be installed on a 312, I've only come up with 3 issues so far... Issue #1: I'm using the belt that came with the mower deck [assuming it was from the original 520] and have had no issues with slippage, jumping or twisting at all. However, if I do lift the deck, I learned to do it with the PTO disengaged. The belt rides close enough to the front of the deck, just right of center, that the belt will 'polish' the edge [pic] if the deck is raised. Of course, this causes no real harm to the deck, but probably doesn't do the belt any good in the process. Issue #2: [boovuc]; Tire clearance. This is the big one. First, since there is no fore/aft movement relative to each other, rear tire clearance is more than adequate [rears are 23"...pic]. Fronts are a different animal. The 312's wheelbase measures out to about 45". Front tires are labled as 15"ers, but tread is well worn down and with 27-30# of air, actually measure about 14" diam in the center. While this is all well and good for straight ahead and moderate turns, if turned full lock in either direction, the outer edge will come into contact with the deck and lock up if on moderately wet grass [pic is of left front...naturally, right front contacts the same if steering is turned full lock right]. Laying on the garage floor and sticking my hand under the deck while looking at the scuff marks, I discovered that contact is actually made where the center and outboard blade tips are in the 'dead zone'. If need be, I could have my welder-guy cut and re-weld a shallow V shaped relief on both sides of the deck to accomodate the tire edge and not interfere with the blades. Issue #3: [leeave96, MalMac & C160Auto]; The M12...In addition to keeping a closer than normal eye on the oil level and breather output, I'm going to increase the max governed speed to 3400 [as both Kohler and WH manuals]. With a 1 to approx 0.75 - 0.8 ration between the crank / PTO and the blade spindle, that should put the blade spindle about 2650 rpm, give or take. I've read somewhere that mower blades are most efficient if the tip speed is just below the speed of sound, but have never been clear on how to actually calculate that. If anyone out there has input on this, I'd be glad for the education.

1 pointToday I got the lights installed and the last thing to do was install the spec. plate for the engine. My old one was in sad shape so I bought a decal from Terry and had a new plate cut from aluminum. Turned out pretty good. Nice job, Terry! Some day I'll paint the letters on the front of the hood but for now, I'm done. One last shot, this one's for you, Bob.

1 pointI might be the oddball. I would rather have a 308-8 than my 310-8. I have had both 8&10 hp kohlers, and I just like the 8hp better. it has been adequate for me. I have plowed my garden, used a 42" rd deck, etc with the k181. most of the early garden tractors were 10hp tops. I think the larger decks brought about the higher hp. a 60" cut would sell me quicker than a large hp number. on that note, I don't understand the 250hp bass boat thing. I have a 14' alumunim v with a 25hp. it tops out at 22mph, which on the water, is plenty fast. I fish all summer on 12-18 gals of gas. my buddy uses 50 gals a weekend in fishing tournaments.
