2 pointsTrying to find things we can do as a family of 6 has led me to get a larger boat with a cuddy so the kids can get out of the sun and wind so here is my latest investment I picked it up cheap since it needs a lower unit but I have connections to get the parts cheap. It's a 21ft. Four Winns 215 Sundowner with a 230hp Mercruiser (305cid Chevy). I was able to pick it up for about half of what the trailer is worth so I figured I couldn't go wrong besides that I have found out that parting out boats on ebay and craigslist has a pretty good payout, this is the 4th boat I picked up this year. I want something bigger some day but I will need to either get a bigger truck or keep it in a marina/harbor. Previous owner named it....I will be trying to figure out a different name, suggestions welcome.

2 pointsThis Horse-A-Holic thing is no joke. It is a real addiction. I missed a very nice 520-H listed in the classifieds and having mentally spent money on another Horse I started searching CL for Horses. (First sign you may have a problem) I found an equally nice and low hour 520-h with 60 inch deck an hour from home. Price was so low I am sure the guy didnt have a clue what he had. $750, so of course I couldnt call fast enough and he had sold it immediately. So I keep searching determined to find something and came across these 2. One has a 42 inch deck and the other a single stage blower. PO says no rust just dirty. Both are serviced regularly and he has had them for years. Taking the trailer and going to look this morning. Unless I see some red flags I will be making two trips to get them to Posseville before dark. I am sure I will have many stupid questions so stay tuned. I AM A HORSE-A-HOLIC!!!

2 pointsThanks for remembering us Vets. My custom is not exactly patriotic but I have been a street rodder for years and just couldn't resist;

2 pointsBig part depends on condition and how much you can do yourself. Figure $300 for the engine seals rings and parts, up to about $800 if you need machine work Paint is all up to your quality standards, I rattle can everything and probobly spend less then $50 on paint. If your going with Automotive quality paints the sky is the limit. Seals and bearings for the Transmission can range from $50-$100 depending on where you get the parts, would recommend a bearing specialist such as Motion Industries. Miscellaneous replacement parts from Wheel Horse and aftermarket reproductions could be $100-$200 depending on what you need. So low end I would say $500 All this is assuming you are going to do all the work yourself BTW and since you are a newbie we will excuse the avatar for now but you may want to change that before you blind someone.... They still have not found the last JD guy that came though here, I think his name was Jimmy Hoffa or something.

1 pointI've just got the prices from my local dealer for the tiller hitch i'm after . £325.48 plus 20 per cent tax. Total £390.58. I've stopped crying and have burst out laughing again. Do Toro make these things out of Kryptonite or something? GEEEZE :banghead: :banghead:

1 pointI've been looking for a nice tub cart for a while, this one is a 1968 model. It still has the original tires, I don't think this ever sat outside. I hooked it to my RJ and had two of my girls try it out.

1 pointgot a little red on it now. deck was weathered from sitting on the trailer lot for 4 months or so. waxed the powdercoat and stained the lumber on the deck a nice redwood color......just need to load it with tractors and go traveling.....

1 pointOh yeah and do the lug bolt to lug nut conversion

1 pointActually I have been thinking about doing something different. But then again I can get kind of carried away when I go on a paint binge. I have never done a Wheel horse yet but I have done a few as evidenced by my old Craftsman hot rod. It was back when the Iraq thing had everybody patriotic that was Desert Storm. It also was almost the 4th of July. Once you get started it takes on a life of it's own.

1 pointI just finished a full major rebuild on a 1054 and I estimate the cost in the neighborhood of $1200-1500 with some 400 hours --- but, as mentioned, I have a blast doing this stuff -- beats hanging out at the corner bar.
-
1 pointI agree on the value being low - you can really open a can of worms on this kind of deal, or,,(less likely) get a real find. I recently bought a 1054 in similar condition you are describing for $250 that I should have only paid maybe a $100 for - sitting out for some period of time, non running, not even able to try as a roller. I based my decision on the price because it was same owner after 1st year and it was in surprisingly original condition - but .... it was a mess, bad worse rust than it appeared, while engine turned over, it needed a rebuild, parts worn out all over - it was a LOT of work and expense

1 pointJust got the latest two NOS k91s today for a total of 3 of this type in the collection.

1 pointAbout four years ago I was admiring the photos Fireman was posting about his RJ restoration and saw one of these engines still on his bench. it is an impressive set up which i did not even know it existed. So there I am wishing I had one since I was also restoring an RJ. Sure enough one shows up on ebay just like his never started NOS. Either because how it was listed or the odd time the auction ended I basically stole it. Upon conversations with seller I came to findout that Fireman's engine came from the same place as the one I got and that he had two more. They came from a long out of business RV manafacturer in Southern California and were bought by two different people one being the seller for the one I got. Moving foward 4 years I see another one on eBay and of course I got to have it. I win the auction ,not nearly as cheap as first one but not too bad, and I get an email from the seller congratulating be for winning the second one four years later. I had no idea it was the same seller. Then after i asked him if it was going to take another four years for the third one to fall off the shelf and before I could come to my senses there were two of them on the way.. As for my collection if you can call it that, ever since I had the first K91 I just became addicted to these little engines. so I have acumulated "a few". The K91S is however a great set up. Coupled with an electric fuel pump, runs incredibly and starting it is just instantaneous. I don't even think it turns one full revolution before it starts, cold or hot. On top of all that I just love having these "time capsules". Always looking to find things like that just forgotten by time.

1 pointThat pic that you posted appears to be a 335. The 335 was the biggest of the single cylinder models Wheel Horse offered, coming in at 23 hp per the brochure. The one I had, had "Made in Switzerland" on the Kohler two-cycle. The HP ratings for all per the brochure are: 295 - 18HP 309 - 20HP 335 - 23HP 399 - 26HP 440 - not given, but per the engine manual it is 28HP The 399 and the 440 were two cylinder models. There is no top speed mentioned anywhere that I've ever found, but FWIW...the optional speedometer kit topped out at 80 mph. (My guess would be to be anywhere near that you also needed the optional Remote Hi Speed Jet Adjustment Kit!)

1 pointSlot hitch if you don't already have one. A rear snowplow/tiller bracket. Hex bolt head covers to reduce rust and exposure to elements. New grease fittings. New oil seals if needed.

1 pointShould have got some 12's for it Never gave it a thought................'till now! Wowza! Picked up the Commando for [1] the blade, like new, and [2] the angle lever for the blade. I put a kind of shabby blade back on the Commando and welded an offset to the angle lever to use on my 416-8 worked great. Put the like new blade on the 416-8 too, nice. Never removed the blade frame from the Commando. Sold it very quickly just parking it street side. My Herd is all 12 inch donuts and I had a few mounted spares. Never thought to put 12's on the Commando. Now, thanks, I know better!

1 pointI had the pleasure of meeting the former owner of a Franklin NC dealership at the Early Farm Days show this weekend. His memory for details is not what I'm sure it once was but when he was looking at my 953 Hot Rod he was able to tell me everything that wasn't origional about it. He said they began selling the line in about 1960 and sold the business in the mid 1980s, couldn't remember what year for sure, but the new owners changed over to Cubs. The building they were in is now the best pizzeria in town. Leadford's Lawn and Garden 409 Depot Street Franklin, NC 28734

1 pointFinished spreading river stone around the house today. Don't mean to "brag", but man a loader on a Horse sure save's on the back pains.

1 pointUPDATE : Well the washers I welded on worked , however after I installed the rods , the front wheels were " pigeon-toed" . I must not have had the balls centered in the sockets correctly . No big deal , So next was a trip to TSC for some parts : 4 - 3/8 X 2 1/4 " X 24 grade 8 bolts 4 - 3/8 X 24 grade 8 nuts 4 Ball-joints 1 piece of 5/8:" round stock ( I had laying around ). Here"s some pics : Now I'm happy !

1 pointThe white pops a lot better than the dull gray. I went with an off-white from Tractor Supply when they sold Valspar paint.

1 pointMy son "Andrew" would like to nominate his Tractor. It's a 1967 L-157 Lawn Ranger. It's for the most part Original with a few extras added.
