The reserve was met and the buyer bought both the front and rears from me.The reserve was actually set at about half what each set brought.I did not expect this but am very happy with the results of the auction.

nope, someones waiting for ol dad to get out there and work on it. its nice to be taking a break, but everytime i go down the garage to do something non tractor related, i hear them calling me and its real hard to grab what i need and leave......... i have a lot of projects to get done and want to get kents out of the way first. maybe a good kick in the a** will get him motivated to get out there. im not going to finish it myself, its his tractor and he will put the effort in and we will get it done eventually, just need to be patient as i want him to be the one pushing dad to get back out there and get it done..........

Many of you have seen pics of my 953. I am now trying to figure out how rare this tractor is...seems like everybody is really interested in it for some reason. A friend of mine who is big into the 1054s and gt14s says he has never seen the steering wheel it has on it. Is that wheel that rare? I have previously been told it is somewhat rare, but not sure how rare it really is. Judging by the serial number it is pretty early. Let me know what you guys think. Joel

:hilarious: Well, at least ya finally wised up and you're rooting for an Ohio team. (I still think yer a closet Buckeye fan) When you retire in a couple years you can move to Athens, Ohio and enjoy your favorite team all ya want. At least you'll be away from those "Losers above the Hoosiers". And since you like historical facts... Oops, had to add a few fellas doin the "Buckeye Boogaloo"! :banana-guitar: :banana-guitar: :music-rockout:

And no one mentions the medical / mental problems? Scared to own up? Like some drugs, Wheel Horse tractors (WHA aka Wheel Horse Addiction) can be very serious (unlike the green 'n yellow thingys). WH "Got Dirt!" Most want more and more and more. "Honest Honey, this'll be my last Horse. I promise!" Haaaaaaaa! See your psychologist now! And a few bumps on the head from the Mrs. too! And now the kids want their own! Shame on Wheely Horsey for doin' this to us! How's 'bout gettin' up at all hours to fix this, tweak that? Red paint all over your clothing, everywhere! We've all been there! WHI (aka Wheel Horse Insomnia), y'all know that one! And, let's not leave out the cost of film. Printing all those pictures can be costly! Cost of travel, "Honey want to take a short ride? The (parts) tree fall colors (and a D series, shhhhhhhhh) are great!" 250 miles from no where! Fairs? Ha! Takin' the wee little ones to a WH jamboree, another tractor pull, a WH auction? Another set of (a few more sets is more like it) great decals from the Vinyl Guy? Forum members show all of the above ailments during their WH "careers." More Tylenol®? Not a chance, WH wheel weights! Yeah! Feelin' better already! Does your health insurance cover Wheel Horse Addiction (known as WHA). No? Whaaaaaaaa! "I'll be right back Hon! Runnin' to the bakery for coffee cake." (pickin' up more Regal Red at Home "Cheapo" really, lyin' again). Don't forget some RustOleum Crystal Clear........while you're there!

My son wanted a fun tractor that he didn't have to worry about scratching but he wanted it cool and different from eveyone else's tractor. Most of the things that were done to it were his idea's, he has been getting his hands dirty working on it along side me. I'll let the pics speak for themselves of what we have done so far, we picked it up less than two weeks ago. The first picture it is riding on the back of my trailer the day we got it home. There are still quite a few things we are going to do to it, this is just a start. We might change the color of the rims, just not sure what color yet. He has named it Rusty in memory of our puppy we lost a few months ago.

Every make of garden tractors have a few design problems that crop-up over time, be it Cub Cadet, Simplicity or Wheelhorse. What this thread is about is identifying those areas of potential trouble so we can all be aware of it ahead of time so we can try to prevent unnecessary damage or how to fix it when we find it. In no way is this thread about running down these fine Wheelhorse tractors. As an example, years ago I read that some of the early 520H Wheelhorse tractors with the swept forward axle and 60 inch decks had the potential for cracked frames where the angle iron frame is welded to the steel plate that attaches to the tranny. I also think Toro beefed up the design to eliminate this potential in later models. Also we talk all the time about the valve seats coming loose in the Onan engines and speak of keeping the engine cooling fins clear of debri. Recently I have read about the 300, 400 and 500 series having steering columns that are not as strong as earlier models and can cause problems. Between the C series and the 300, 400, and 500 series tractors, what are some of the inherent problems that one can expect to encounter? Perhaps we can make a list of problems, i.e. like frames cracking, what is the cause, how to prevent and ultimately how to fix. Don't know if a tread such as this would merit being a "sticky", but it would be great info for all of us Wheelhorse owners trying to keep them going another generation - or two! Any replies to the above would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Bill

My father was friends with the man who mowed our community park in Mill Hall, PA. He mowed four to five days a week to keep ahead of things but what got me was his tractor. It was an 8 horsepower late 60's Wheelhorse with a little 36 inch deck. I was too young to realize what that tractor was expected to do. The park back then was smaller but was still over 10 to 15 acres and spread out over a large area of playground equipment, a festival ground and an earthen dike along Fishing Creek and open baseball practice fields. It mowed it all and he mowed it for over 10 years. When he got behind, the boro workers would come in with a 3 point mower but that man and that tractor still amaze me. His name was Earl Long. His son still lives here and I missed getting that tractor by a few years. I never knew it was still in the old homestead's garage. I knew what I wanted when the time came for a tractor of my own. I traded even up; my 1975 "AMF" Harley Sportster for my still owned C-175 with a mower deck, chains and a plow. That was the best trade I ever made. Once I had that tractor, I had to have a few more. Same comments as the others, a solid simple quality built, well engineered garden tractor that was a high water mark of American manufacturing.

I just bought a set of front weights and a set of rear weights and chains for 23-10.50 for $50 last week. The rears don't fit anything I have though. They are too big for 12" rims. They are 14" across. They are the ring type. Not solid. But very heavy. But still a good deal that I couldn't pass up.

WHEW! :scared-eek: :scared-eek: Now that's a motley crew, if I've ever seen one. Guess which one is the ring leader?

See Duke, I was hopin' you would come out with the guns a blazin'. It's two days and counting. One day for the Hawkeyes!!! A win would be a nice start to next season. I am sure that Duke would enjoy but that is only if Michigan wins, which I personally think the Wolerines are going to be going back to Ann Arbor empty handed. Sorry Guys

Just an update about my order from Tulsa Engine warehouse (tewarehouse.com) I got my order within 7 days and was surprised to see that my carb rebuild kits were genuine Kohler kits I assumed that due to the low price of $8.52 per kit I would be getting the Stens version. I also ordered a bunch (50) of sediment bowl gaskets at 47 cents each so I can clean/rebuild the sediment bowl assembly instead of replacing them just because the gasket is no good.

Well, I think I am clean enough to touch a keyboard and sit in a chair. Had to shower off a pound of dust, grit and grease just to feel somewhat decent again. Still hacking up paint taste haha. Had to help my dad swap his D60 front axles today in his 1977 dodge. Changed gear ratio by swapping the whole axle. Roof is bare metal now and so is cab back. Finished welding in roof skin, turned out pretty good. Have some warping but will see if I can improve it a little before some body filler. Today was definitely a long day... Will work on the truck again Friday. Charlie

I sold a set of the off white rear weights on ebay a couple months ago for $140 I think they went to a member here it seems as though the red ones sell for more so I guess I will be in the shop tonight shooting some primer and getting some weights ready to be red.

the thing that hasnt been mentioned is pretty much all these "problems"are very easy to fix,a plate added to the frame, some steel for the newer steering, some welding and a bit of fabricating skills can repair almost any of these problems, thats a really nice thing about these tractors, easy to work on in general

Hello Horsefixer, Your reply to my answer to the question appears to be rather coarse. You start by agreeing, but go on in the same sentence to re-describe my answer in a more general way. You use the term "Balanced" which would describe the effect of the weights relative to the center of gravity of the wheel and tire when rotating. This is Ok and refers to the Dynamics of the added weight when in motion, usually measured relative to one axis like the center of the hub or axle shaft. When measured relative to one axis (axis of shaft) on a balancing machine the CG is assumed to be at this axis. We also use Statics to determine the effect of the added weight on different parts of the tractor like the hub bearings at rest, or when the tractor is not moving. This is a simpler case and is easy to understand because any weight that is added outside of the CG will always place this force on the bearing. This is why I included the 2nd example of adding weight 5 feet outside of the CG, because one can observe this in their own garage. I will restate my original answer but add in my opinion of the weights that were added. "Actually, if the weight is added inside the wheel rim and is added exactly at the center of gravity (CG) then there will be no added force to the wheel bearings." Looking at the photos of the added weight it appears that the majority of the added weight is near the Centroid (CG) of the wheel and tire, therefore the added weight is not placing a large force on the wheel bearing at rest. Also, the weights appear to be symetrical in shape, therefore the wheel, tire and added weight is probably somewhat balanced and will not place very much dynamic force on the bearing when driven. This can be verified by having the whole assembly balanced on a machine. Good job 1maidenfan, Horsefixer, I hope you can accept my technical answer, if not please reference an ME book on "Statics". Gary

Starting back in the 50's we run a Wheel Horse dealership out of are farm. By the time I was in 3 grade I was working helping assemble the new tractors out of crate, other than get in the way of my Dad and Grandpa I manage to put the front wheels on. Then when I got older I was the guy who would take customers out and demon straight some of the attachments. So I guess you can say I have been around them my whole life. There were other tractors that came to the shop for repair. Some of the tractors were nice tractors and had some nice features but Wheel Horse was always the favorite and always the by far the easiest to work on.

I thought I'd pull this thread out of the mothballs long enough to show you guys what came in the mail today. I got my issue of LAGT Magazine in the mail today, and there was Danny's tractor sitting right next to the Lady Ranger! (whfan74, or Scott). My son was so excited he took off with the magazine to his friends house to show them. This really is a priveledge to be in LAGT, and a real honor to be sitting next to the Lady Ranger. Both tractors were built for our kids, and I can't think of a better thing to do for our kids in these days of hi tech stuff! I would like to say a special thanks to Kate over at LAGT, who is sending me some extra copies, which is good, because Danny is going to wear this one out! Matt :flags-texas:
