2 pointsI finally got around to my own project this summer, finishing up the 867 I got this spring and she’s now running and driving very nicely. I fully rebuilt the K181 that was seriously trashed by the lower end of its dipstick falling in to the crankcase, replaced tie rods and steering support, re-sealed transaxle, added new seat, re-enforced the fender sheet metal to support my weight without flexing, and removed many decades of petrified grease. I am going to put new needle and thrust bearings in the RM367 mower deck over the winter as I tried it out and it was a bit loud. Not a show queen but I didn’t intend it to become one. I just repaired it enough to continue doing what it has seemingly enjoyed doing for the past 45 years, being a reliable worker. -Mark-

2 pointsBought this 552 from Les Henry last fall. Originally I was planning a full restoration, but the more I looked at it the more I like the way it looked original. Soooo, I decided to wet sand and clear coat the whole thing and do redo the wheels & tires Before Not sure what it was, but I liked the original look, so here we go . . . Miller Tire paint . . . stuff works great, but I suspect based on consistency/smell/etc. you can do like rmaynard said and use latex paint with the same results. Finished product Best part is Mrs.Zeek liked it Might do some exhaust work yet :techie-eureka:

Rofl....to the youngsters, watch Steve's video...That is wat too many drugs cause! Thought of the day.... My brother told me this morning; "it's all down hill from here". My response;" Maybe for you, but the thing about big engines is, they take awhile to get warmed up! " Y'all think the first 40 was a ride? Wait til you see the next! I just got up to operating temp;)

2 pointsWow what a great time getting to see you guys. Your dad didn't get just any Horse.......he got a BEAUTIFUL HORSE! Thank you so much for your friendship and your generosity. Really looking forward to seeing you guys in 3 weeks!

2 pointsI find it very hard to believe that oil will stay the same temperature, regardless of the engine operating temperature. Brian Miller will have to prove that to me.

1 pointIs there any good tutorials with pictures (that I cant seem to find) on rebuilding Techy carbs? I want to remove those little freeze plug looking things and really do a first class rebuild. Thanks!

1 pointThanks Kenny, Aussie, Rich -n- Mike Well I Started assembling the Rear End and Got the Gas Tank out and De-Gunked it and cleaned it up. There was alot of rust stains on it from the rusty sheet metal surrounding it prolly do from vibration of the plastic tank wearin through the paint from the tank so I had some rubbery white roof stuff that is sticky for RV Roofs that I cut to give it some cushion. I installed it on the tank and skid it into place Once Installed Ya cant see it. I have been useing 95% Stainless Steel on all the Bolts on assembly except where there will need to be grade 8 where there is alot of stress. I also started assembly Of The Matt Hydro foot pedal doo dad thought I would try one of those out. I installed the rear fender pan and put some new tail lights on it and then started in on the seat. The new seat I got from Butch (thanks buddy) if you recall I had to make a bracket for it as it didn't fit the mounts but it does now. I got the front tires mounted on the tractor with all new bearings, races, and seals so shouldnt hafta fool with that for along time. Here is some pics of this weekends work. Cheers ~Duke

1 pointI run Valvoline full synthetic racing oil in my pulling engines. It has the anti wear additives for flat tappet camshafts. But those engines do not run long enough to get really hot and I change the oil after every 4 runs. Someone mentioned an oil temperature gauge on a tractor. My 520xi has a factory oil temperature gauge. It isn't marked in degrees, it's marked in 3 ranges, green, yellow and red. I have always run Shell Rotella straight 30W in all of my worker Wheel Horses, 2 of them are diesels so I just use it in all of them so I don't have to have a bunch of different kinds of oil sitting around. The Kohler Command in the 520xi calls for 10W30, I didn't have any Rotella 10W30 and since I have always liked Mobil 1, I decided to run 10W30 Mobil 1 in it this spring. I was about halfway through mowing when I noticed the the temperature gauge was running fairly high. Before I could finish mowing the temperature gauge was touching the yellow range so I shut it off and let it cool down. I thought maybe the cooling fins were clogged or something so I took the tins off and cleaned everything up then finished mowing. The next week I watched the gauge closely and at about the same amount of time mowing the gauge was at the yellow again. I shut it off and pulled the dipstick and the oil was as thin as water, it ran right off the dipstick. I went out and bought a new filter and some 10W30 Rotella and changed oil. The Rotella has been in there ever since, and the only time it's gone over halfway in the green range was on a day when the temperature was 95 degrees in the shade and even then it was only slightly higher than it normally is. I'm not saying Mobil 1 isn't good oil, I'm just saying my air cooled engine didn't like it one bit. I think it's better suited for a water cooled engine, it seems to thin badly at the higher operating temperatures of an air cooled engine. The Rotella seems to maintain it's viscosity much better in the high operating temperatures of an air cooled engine.

1 pointI guess I am just an outside kind of guy. I do not even use a tent when I am ice fishing. Visibility is one of the main reasons, I live on a busy street, but the main reason is that I really like winter. One more reason...everyone loves a snow man.

1 pointYou're right about the tight confines, and much over 6' tall...you're gonna feel like a sardine in there. All things considered...I like using my cab much better than coming back in the house covered in snow. I do use my cab together with my blower set up though...not the plow.

1 pointGreat day Saturday at the Mentone, Indiana Swap Meet and Show! Here are some more photos for those Red Square members who have not yet had the pleasure of coming to the Mentone , Indiana Swap Meet. The sellers and buyers were having a great day and lots of good conversations about their tractors. Loaded the truck with stuff for sale and headed to Mentone Saturday morning: Jake Kuhn on his dad's new tractor! The Wheel Horse train: Surrounded by RED: End to a perfect day! The Mentone "BIG EGG" downtown -don't miss it if you visit!

1 pointWell, the Buckeyes won another close one. And how about Michigan and that stompin they put on Mass? Bob, I'm using the "gut feeling" method to pick the games, and it's way too early to be talkin about most improved. The real test comes when the conference play starts in two weeks. The pickin will be a lot harder then, and that's when I'll most likely fall apart. You guys have been doin this a long time and I'm still a newb to it all, but havin fun. Now let's spice this thread up a bit with some trash talk and stop actin like a buncha girls. I'm gonna start by suggesting that Michigan shoulda save some of those points they pounded Mass with , cause they're gonna need em next week against the Fighting Irish. Watch out for that Leprechaun Bob!

1 pointHey Rooster I use Royal Purple gear oil in nearly all my trany's Cost a few but so does gears and bearings. Won't harm bronze. The Military uses RP for nearly everything.

1 pointEmission constraints didn't kill Onan by themselves. Onan could not produce EPA approved engines as cheaply as foreign competitors. Eventually they could not compete and dropped the small engine lines. The EPA is partly to blame, but those of US that went for cheaper alternatives shoulder some responsibilty as well. Rant finished! :)

1 pointTried to get the C-81 to run, it cranks and seems to have good compression, but no spark. I spent more on a coil/condenser, spark plug and wire than I did the whole tractor. I needed points too since I was told that's probly what it is, and the dip$hit didn't give me any. So now I have to wait till Monday, hopefully get out of work before they close. Does Lowes or Home Depot sell the points?? I see they have some Kohler stuff there, really want to hear this run before I tear it apart.
