On our trip to Gettysburg a few weeks ago, I made a stop to pick this up. I had been watching this on Craig's List for a few weeks prior and hemmed and hawed about pulling the trigger on it. When we decided to go to Gettysburg, it was a no brainer as it was right on the way. Called the seller to see what his bottom line was on it and we struck a deal. He had it taken all apart for me when I arrived as I was towing the camper and space was at a premium. I sanded, primed and painted all the parts. Replaced all the hardware and rebuilt the winch. I added anti-slip strips to afford traction and not mess up the paint. The ramps adjust in and out to accommodate different width tractors etc. There is a safety that locks it in place once it's at the top and keeps the load off the winch. With my little mechanics rolling seat I can actually sit underneath and work from below if I need to. I also plan on leaving a tractor up there for storage. I'm contemplating adding some square plating and wheels underneath so it can be mobile. Wish the winch was 110 vac but for for now running it off a 12 vdc car battery will do.

Well today I worked on painting the frame and rear and front end. I had been degreaseing and wire wheelin for the past week and finally got everything cleaned up enough to paint. Everything covered well but was alot of masking and covering intricate parts and everything it is drying now along with a bunch of small parts. I used Valspar Restoration series IH Red and the Black Is Restoration series low gloss Black. I Will start assembling tomorrow. heres some pics. Cheers ~Duke

bummed out about this one. this tractor belongs to a good buddy of mine . he drove 5hrs one way to the U.P michigan to get it a few years ago. kelly was here when we unloaded it and this was a nice original tractor. this happen over 4th july week. unknown what cause the fire. it was a 98 degree day and just filled the gas to very top. sent his 13yr old boy out to mow. minutes later he heard yelling and screaming. tractor was fully ingulfed the time he got out of the house. he managed to put it out with a garden hose. son said he saw flames comeing out from the gas tank fill hole in the hood and shut it off and took off running. thankfully his son did not get hurt. I know the gas cap did not have the greatest seal . only thing we can figure is , hot day, full tank , + fumes and it ignited. I am hopeing the engine is salvagable. most of the fire is from the gas tank tower back. the flywheel side of the engine took some heat. the rest of the engine looks good. hope the deck is good also picked up a replacement tractor for him over the weekend

So today is my birthday and although Jim did the majority of my birthday present yesterday, today was even better. Recently I purchased a C141 Automatic. I purchased it with a locked up motor, and no guarantees on anything. Well Jim helped me work on the tractor today and after pulling the head and spraying some pb blaster down the cylinder hole, the motor came free. not only that, the starter was also seized up, it came free. we honed the hole and everything seems good. It was the best thing ever. Although I did not get to hear it come to life, I did get to hear the motor try. I just need to clean the points and see if that will give me spark...I hope to be able to ride it around at the next show...I just really hope that the hydro trans is good...wish me luck!

Well its been sixteen years and over 200,000 in my last new truck. So I broke down and bought a new truck. I think this will pull just about any trailer filled with horses. I am already planning a trip est to the big show. I will have to see what kind of trailer I end up with but I really don't think I will have to worry. Let me know what you think of the new ride.

I just bought this work horse 1848. It had a snow blower attached. I took it off to install the mower deck. How ever I'm having a problem trying to figure out how to install it. If any one can help I have pictures attached. If you live near Cuyahoga falls ohio let me know if you want to come over and help with my very first work horse.

Cut the pipe, so that there is about 1/2 inch still out of the block. Then take a sawzall or similar tool, and cut two slots length wise through the pipe about 3/4 to 1 inch apart from each other. Try not to cut so deep you go into the block. Once cut, you can take a hammer, and chisel, and break the pipe allowing it to be removed. Its really not that difficult, and doesn't take very long. I've done many, and all were successful. I always find that there are pro's and cons with all this hub removal/woodruff key thing. I guess it comes down to whether you are are a glass half full kind of guy or a glass half empty... If the hub just falls off, then I always think "Oh crap the axle is worn and the bore in the hub is oversize, and its always going to keep coming loose on me" Whereas if the hub fights you every step of the way, at least you know there is a decent chance that the parts arent flogged out, and they'll be fine with a clean up and reassembly.

They were built by Lambert for Wheel Horse. If you're talking about the height adjuster, yes - it should have a spring to lock it in place. I'll try to get a picture later. This is my $50 sweeper: @Craig - yours is just the older version.

Everything that you guys have mentioned so far sounds good to me! I myself, have always wished that Wheel Horse would have made more shaft driven tractors (Only ones I can think of that were shaft drive were D series, right?). The diesel engine is also a really good idea!

In a prior post I have mentioned that I have been riding and collecting Vintage Bicycles. Usually when ya get um they look like crap and are pretty rusty. Well I have discovered a way to clean up the Chrome And it works fantastic! Go to your local Ace Hardware and pic up some Wood Bleach better know as "Oxalic Acid" mix about 1 oz of the crystals to 1 gallon of water and submerse your parts in it for about 6 to 12 hours and you wont believe your eyes!! The Bike rims below were rusted beyond repair really bad! You may have to play with the solution strength and if bad like these give them a second dunk You will need to get some white scotch brite pads because there is a little white film it leaves on the parts and rinse them with water and wipe the film off when you take them outta the solution. Make sure you use a good chrome cleaner, wax, or something like mothers aluminum mag cleaner to the parts to keep them from rusting again! Another thing that works good on chrome is aluminum foil wetted with water this works good but no way as good as the wood bleach method. The best cleaner I have found that requires the less amount of wiping is brasso. Try these methods, You'll Like It.! The pictures below are fresh out of the oxalic acid tank shown with no wiping or waxing yet! They looked even better after buffed with mothers mag cleaner.

Yes, that stuff works really well, and its not too nasty to use. Acids always frighten me a little, but I've had oxalic acid on my skin and it didnt seem to do anything too nasty. The gauge in this picture was placed face down in about 3/8" of oxalic acid, wiped off and polished with "Never Dull". I dont have a "before" pic, but the chrome ring was pretty rusty to start with.
