Early production 953s can be distinguished by four primary features. The headlights are recessed behind the grill rather than protruding from it, they use a "Ross" steering gear rather than the later "Fan Gear", Have Serial Numbers beginning with "62" and the steering wheel has a diamond shaped center cap rather than a round one. It is thought that only about one thousand early models were produced though no actual production numbers are available. (953 nut)

" Only model where they put the serial decal on the hood" - rj35hunter
" The only model to use lever choke and throttle controls on the dash tower. It should have a full hood like a 604/654/704 but use the older 61-62 front axle. The front of the frame should be flat, not bumped out like the rest of the 63 models that used the new axle. It also had long cast iron foot rests instead of the stirrup style." - CasualObserver
