Differences between 656 & 1056?

Recommended Posts

Got both needing engines, the hood is better on the 656 and came with deck. The 1056 had a plow. Which one should I work on first? Both short frames, etc??

Depends what your plans are for them.   If I needed a worker, I would prefer the 10 HP.  The plow and decks should fit either one.

For show and fun,  pick one.

:twocents-02cents: by needing engines do you mean they cam without engines, or do the engines need to be rebuilt? If they both need engines then the search is on and you repair the one you find an engine for first. Either one will run the deck the 656 came with and both can push snow (the 1056 may be able to push it a bit faster). If both have engines that need to be rebuilt I would pull the heads and inspect the cylinder of both. If one is going to only need honing and rings then that is the one to start with!

Give us a bit more information, and :wwp:

:woohoo:  The 1056 will take any horizontal shaft Kohler from 8 HP to 14 HP, find a good running one and bolt it up. Some folks are using the Predator (Honda clones from Harbor Freight), lots of threads on putting them in.

Throw a used Honda GX or a new Predator 6hp on the 656, and use it for light work.   I was once a fan of Tecumsehs, but now I've given up on them.  Too much frustration.

Then do a good restoration of the 1056, find a good used Kohler 10hp, and have it ready for plowing snow or for a snow thrower.

Does that mean the 1956 is a bigger frame? Are the hoods the same size?

I presume you meant to say 1056. What that means is that 10 HP, 12 HP and 14 HP share a common engine block and can all fit in the same place. The 856 is the same as the 1056 but has a smaller engine. The only 12 HP in 1966 was the 1276, an automatic. I am not positive, but I believe the hood on the 656 is too low for the larger engines.

A 16 HP K-341 will work too. I'm curious about the hood thing though. Hitting the books again tomorrow. :)

The 656 and 856 are 'short frames'.    I believe the 1056 is a 'long frame', so the hoods are not interchangeable if that's what you're thinking of trying.

:text-yeahthat: That's what I was thinking. The 1056 is longer than the 656. Nhmikel, you have them both right there, just measure them.:)

I always heard that the 1057, 1067, 1077, 1257, 1267 and 1277 were the first of the long frames. 857, 877 retained the short frame.

That's what I thought Richard but I started having second thoughts when I visualized the bigger block under the hood on the 1056. I'll be darn if I can find the spec's for the 1056. :confusion-scratchheadblue:

I did find that the hoods have different part numbers.

I referred back to a thread from 2008 ref short frames.  A reply from BPjunk listed the short frame models.  If that info was correct, the long frames started in 1966 for the 10hp, and sooner for the 12hp.   A search for 'short frames' should bring up that old thread.  As Racinbob said, best way is to just measure the hoods.

With any luck @nhmikel will get out a tape measure and help settle some of this. I love it when someone starts all of us running in circles like "Keystone Cops" and comes back later.   :ychain:       :wwp:

I searched but could not find the 1056 manual?  Where is there one?

I couldn't find the frame number on the Toro parts list but I did find this. The 1076 and 1276 are definitely long frames (45.5") The 656 is definitely a short frame (41.25"). The 656 uses a 5465 hood where the 1076, 1276 AND the 1056 share the same 6460 hood. That seems like pretty convincing evidence that the 1056 is a long frame........maybe :confusion-shrug::)

Someone out there must have a 1056 owners manual to download here. :teasing-signhere:

There is an owner's manual for a 1057 & 1257 on this site.   I downloaded it for my 1257.  Part numbers are probably all the same as one year earlier.

Are you saying the 1057 is the same for the 1056?

They are going to real close. I believe the 1056 uses a 5053 transmission with 1" axles and the 1057 uses the 5058 with 1.125" axles and bevel differential gears. :)

There are owner's manuals for the 1056 on ebay for as little as $8.00 .   Just enter Wheel Horse 1056.   Make sure they have the parts views and parts numbers

Good luck,  Jim

As far as the transmissions go I can't say for sure, but a 1056 is a long frame tractor with a deep pan kohler.

The left over engines from the 1055 models needed an engine plate it fit correctly in the 65 model so they were labeled 1046 and only to use up the inventory of shallow pan big blocks. (The 10hp engine that fits short frames) Once gone the 1056 was built, long frame, deep pan kohler, and foot stirrups.

I looked as well nothing.

I have both tractors and the 1056 is definitely a long frame. The 656 you can easily bolt up an 8hp kohler (its whats on mine) that will give it enough power to do what you want... I havent put my 1056 through its paces yet to be able to tell you if it has that little extra. I also will note the narrow tires on the 656 dig in better for snow plowing :wwp:
