How could I get a bit more power out of this Kohler magnum 8hp

That engine, just like it is will have plenty of power to run your horse. No need to waste time and expense trying to get a 1/2 hp more out of it. If you truly need more power, go with a bigger engine. But if you're just looking to speed the tractor up, a different pulley arrangement is the way to go and you should still have plenty of power. If you are looking to get more pulling power, out of it, a different pulley arrangement is also the best way to go.

Don't be fooled by the size of that M8, it has plenty of juice for a tractor.

Below is an example of what to do with different pulley sizes.
