Sea-Duck51 55 #1 Posted October 31, 2015 I believe the fuel pump, not attached to carb may be bad or in need of repair, was thinking about converting to a low pressure 2-4 psi 12 volt pump, has anyone have input, knowledge or done this, thx for your help. rick 237 #2 Posted October 31, 2015 I have converted my 416H to an electric fuel pump, because the OEM pump would lose prime, causing an extended crank time. I got the pump from Kirk Engines. I also converted my 314-8 to an electric fuel pump, for the same reason. That pump I got from NAPA. it was regulated at the proper pressure, but came with fittings for 5/16 fuel line You will need to mount the pump close to the fuel tank, as they are better at pushing fuel, and mount a good fuel filter in line on the intake side of the pump,I put my pumps under the fender pan, using scrap metal to fab a mount. I wired mine through a relay, activated by a signal from the ignition circuit. that way I can turn the key, hear the change in the pump sound as it pressurizes the system, then turn the key to start, and off she goes! Do not let the fuel run through the OEM pump, take it out of the line! I left the fuel filter next to the engine remain, but is just a "final filter", and will not need much service. There are those (and they will chime in) that will advocate using a signal from the oil pressure switch to close the circuit to the relay, and while it is the safest way to to it, you will still have a lengthy crank time. How some ever, if you have some constructive advice to a safer way to wire the pump, I am all for hearing/see
Sea-Duck51 55 #3 Posted October 31, 2015 Thanks for the useful info but turns out pump is not the problem, cleaned tank, shutoff valve, new fuel lines, filter, cranked over and plenty of fuel so decided to take top off carb and side plate, bowl was half full but here's my question, fuel come in the bottom chamber and must work its way to top chamber and into float bowl but it seems since there both the same it appears the only way is the thickness of gasket which is thin,it ran before but only on 3/4+ choke, acts like its starving for fuel, any thoughts gentleman?. Sea-Duck51 55 #4 Posted November 1, 2015 I figured out the gasket, rubber type material was too thin or squeezed too tight so with some gasket material made two more for a total of three which allows more clearance for the fuel to reach the upper chamber thus getting into the bowl, runs like a champ and throttle is responding, only need the choke to start now instead of running on it.
