Got the starter generator sand blasted and tore apart .The bearing was bad

on the pulley end

100_3371.jpg

So I cleaned out the carbon dust and checked all the contections and

brushes also cleaned the commutator with a scotch-brite pad replaced both bearings and painted

the hardest thing about painting,is just do it!! the body work is the hard part!! painting candy,or multi stage is a little more complicated.if this is your first go? it looks good!!

Really nice job, Brian. :thumbs2:

One question about the stainless pivot pin... I've pulled about 6 front axles out of Wheelhorse tractors, and on all but one, the pin has been badly worn, but the bore in the axle has been ok. I figure that the soft mild steel pin is kind of sacrificial to save the bore in the axle. Do you think the stainless might be a little hard?

Yes it might be but as this tractor going to be a trailer queen

it should not be a problem as long as it's greased well

If I was going to use this tractor I would install bronze bushing's in the axle pivot point with the stainless pin :ychain:

Excellent work, Brian.

You did remember to lube the heck out of the cam pin, didn't you?

(I'm just reminiscing about a guy I know who assembled the cam dry in a big block K and about 45 seconds into the first run the cam seized on the pin, stuff broke, and lots of pieces ended up in the oil pan. :thumbs2: )

Although not quite as elaborate as your overhaul, I had a post going over a year ago when my son & I were "freshening up" a K-161. Funny thing is - it's still sitting on the workbench and it's still not finished.

Since I'am going to use a stainless steel steering shaft and tie rods

I thought a stainless lower steering shaft would be cool too :hide:

Brian,

You're doing a fantastic job. I just finished doing a C161 Automatic last year that I took to a similar level. I worked on it after hours at work and even drew about 80% of it into my 3D CAD system. It's fun to use the tools that you have access to.
